Ana- this is a really great idea!! For it to work here in the DR/Haiti you would have to pay for your own room and board, I think. However, it is true that "volunteers" here are charged up to $1000 a week for the "privilege" so there is certainly a market for those who are really willing and qualified. The issue is that often the "volunteers" do not speak the local language and really are not prepared to "teach" and so have little to offer. If we can devise more projects that can just plug people in-- because of some really basic skills that are needed such as English speaking (neede here) or math/accounting tutoring-- this would really work.

I think that the airlines are hurting right now but certainly it would be worth it for local tourism councils to get involved in this.
