Are you a traveler or a travel company?

Traveler .

Tell us your idea. What makes your idea innovative?

I'm a film maker. Along with my partner we have travelled around the world for 2.5 years, on a tandem bicycle, making films on the way. We volunteer for NGOs worldwide (preferrably small organisations in need of support and promotion) and provide them with a documentary showcasing their project. We grant them absolute free use of our film, allowing them to set up charity screenings where the public is asked for donation, to promote their action on TV and so on; we broadcast and spread the films as much as possible on our own networks to encourage the public to donate or become a volunteer themselves. A first NGO we made a film for in Bolivia actually made hundreds of euros of donation the first night the film was screened. In India, we taught film-making to a group of women while we were shooting a film for the Tibetan community in exile.
It's clearly innovative in the sense that we bring to small communities a technology they would be unable to attain otherwise, and then allow them access to mass media promotion to sustain and support their action. Films:

Impact

What is the likely impact of your idea?

It's not likely to be so, we have observed it over more than 2 years of travel: the NGOs we make films for get wide promotion that makes an impact and is an efficient way of showcasing their work. Actual doners are glad to watch for real the result of the efforts they've been putting together; potential doners and volunteers get the real flavor of the action we're promoting and are all the more likely to get involved. As said, an NGO working in Bolivia made hundreds of euros of donation screening our film. A French NGO working with Tibetan refugees in Dharamsala uses our film regularly to bring the subject to an audience that would otherwise clearly ignore it or not be aware of it. It's a lot easier to tell the audience "we're going to show you a nice film" rather than "please hear what we have to say".

What would it take to launch or spread your idea?

Until now I've made films and videos for organisations in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, India, and Nepal. All this work was free work done during a first trip around the world. New NGOs are contacting me to ask for a film. To be able to provide them with films, I need support to cover the expenses of the trip. I'm not willing to get paid for my work, I'll gladly do it for free, but I cannot afford to travel and visit these new NGOs at my own expense now; I need financial support to help me travel to new places where my films might make a difference. Then, to make it sustainable and meaningful in the long term, media networking and means of broadcasting are needed - not that it costs a lot of money but to bring the pieces together the films need to be spread as much as possible.

Describe yourself as a social innovator.

Besides the work on the films, during our trip we've always made a point to promote natural human values such as solidarity, sport, hospitality and ecology: we've chosen to ride a bike and not to use "dirty" means of transport, we're members of global hospitality communities, we hope that our way of life on the road showcases a healthy, sporty dedication, and we're much into meeting new people and expanding what we call our human family around the world. We regularly help local initiatives - either helping along, making a film or both! We set up meetings and gathering to screen our films and try to raise awareness to fundamental issues like poverty, ecology, freedom...
