Dear Sudha,

you have an amazing project which has been reaching a representative audience. what kind(s) of key decision(s) that 104 Advice wants to seed among people (who calls the line) in a way to help them change their behavior? What is the nudge in your project?

thank you for participating in this competition!

Dear Lele,

Thanks for your interest in our project, we always welcome feedback!

As I have mentioned in our entry, the rural health coverage in Andhra Pradesh falls well below WHO standards. One of the major reasons for this is that more than 86% of the villages in the state lie beyond 3 kilometers from the nearest hospital - which is usually a government facility providing primary healthcare.

This difficulty in accessing primary health care results in around 600,000 patients going untreated each day. The main obstacle to these people for seeking the government provided healthcare is the cost involved in traveling the distance - in terms of time, effort, and money. This encourages them to neglect their health and ignore any medical conditions that they deem 'minor', such as a cough, or a fever - which can be symptoms of more serious health conditions.

The key nudge in the '104 Advice' helpline project is to change the behaviour of the impoverished rural populations who neglect or ignore their health problems due to the cost involved in seeking qualified medical attention. By providing an easier-to-use alternative that offers free standardized medical advice, we hope to change their habit of overlooking medical problems - be they minor or major.

Another change we want to effect in the people that make up our target group is to nudge them to seek medical attention from a qualified source only. There is a lack of basic health awareness among the rural populations in India, which, coupled with their lack of education, makes them easy prey for quacks who take advantage of their naiveté to con them. As mentioned in our entry, '104 Advice' was founded because of one such incident, where rural populations fell victim to con men and quacks posing as doctors during the Chikungunya epidemic in 2005.

By providing the rural populations a source of qualified - and free - medical advice, we hope to tackle this problem.

I hope this answers the question!

regards,

Sudha S K

“Great idea! Can you also provide more information about how exactly the grant money would be used for a new innovation? It seems to be more of an expansion for good idea already in effect!”
