Woow! ECOVC am impressed, the fact that you are believing in these youth. I think they have been out casts for a long time. I know of some children who fear to go back to their homes when they get out of remand homes because anything can happen to them by the people or families they hurt, so they end up on the streets. I think providing them with a good education will help them become better citezens of the country. keep up the good work and good luck in all you do. I hope you will expand and also support some boys and girls in western Uganda who are in the same situation yet want to go back to school.
the fact that this project provides more than education but rather life skills, mentoring, etc I think in the long run the boys and girls get time to heal, believe in their selves again and also work hard. I know the process takes time but its do-able given chance and patience. Uganda we are doing it. ECOVC this is great am so glad this is taking place.
the package covers more than education because the boys and girls have gone through alot of things [both good and bad but mostly bad] so they need time to heal. Am glad you appreciate the project and youre positivity will keep us [ECOVC] moving on and NEVER GIVE UP!
Does this project take up troubled school children? (youth) the mentoring element is missing in our Ugandan schools, few NGO's have taken it on but less schools benefit. Other than that, educating boys and girls regardless of their background will help decrease the number of children on streets moving into better positions. Keep going?
ECOVC doesnt not only work in remand homes but also in schools and various communities. the issue of mentoring isnt so popular in Uganda yet its crutial, we mentor on termly basis and further go ahead to cover issues of Sexual Maturation Management (SMM) we get to talk about the various changes boys and girls under go during puberty, hygiene, and being comfortable with your body...

recently i was out upcountry analysing the status of girls education on one of the projects we are implementing, and i realised how the girl child is still vulnerable especially when it comes to managing menstruation. in schools there are less latrines- privacy isnt paramout, some schools lack wash rooms and changing rooms for the girls among other things. so the girls stay home during their periods thus missing lessons and performing poorly at the end of the term. this later leads to dropping out and so on... am concerned. sanitary wear in some areas is not affordable due to poverty. the local pad would be the option here but cotton material is a problem too. what shall we do to ensure that the girls dont drop out of school?
Kashengu, I agree with you thats lots of these boys and girls live in fear and this hold back thier potential, pyhcologically this is un healthy thats why group and one to one sessions are important, they need to over come this fear, move on [to a new positive chapter of life] this takes gradual steps and rushing never helps. Trust is the key, they open up, let it out, we discuss and get a wayforward.
This time I have been away [taken some time off to train in Gender Mainstreaming and Leaership Trajectory and also compile notes on young peoples sexual reproductive health rights. My goodness there is alot to be discussed with the boys and girls and yet so little time. I encourage you to get hold of this information incase you work with young people.
