Wow! This initiative is so great! It's very good that it is focusing on working with the youth at a grassroot level! The problem with these projects is often that they seem hard to establish, to organise. But this one looks very feasible because it seems practical and possible on a down-to-earth level. I am impressed, really! This is a good and proactive idea. Rock on, keep on going!

A great idea that looks so natural with lots of potential help to many youths! I wish this could be implemented not just in your area, but also in all parts of the country where information is not easily accessible. This of course benefits largely the rural areas where the majority of the population in Kenya lives. All the best!
This project shows how mobilizing knowledge with few resources can make a big difference for many youth in rural communities. While the top secondary students automatically qualify for university, the majority is left to seek for alternative post-secondary education opportunities. Many of these are far and information on the types of programs and their costs is hard and costly to come by in communities where there are few newspapers to look for advertisements and no internet. Collecting all this information is simply too expensive for one person, but is a modest cost for a youth project such as this and making it available to a large community is extremely cost-effective. As co-director of Africa SOMA Inc. (www.africasoma.org) , a small charitable fully volunteer based organisation working primarily on expanding education opportunities in Maasailand, we look forward to working with Green Power and the youth to expand this creative initiative to Maasailand. Good luck!
I also really like this idea. I have been working as an anthropologist focusing on education in Kenya and co-direct Africa SOMA Inc., a small non-profit. We support educational initiatives mainly in Maasailand. Of course, for many of the poor, continuing with education after secondary is simply too expensive unless your secondary grades are high enough to secure one of the coveted university spots and gain access to the government student loan program. However, there are also many youth who do not make the university cut-off but would like to continue and whose parents, friends, or relatives have the means to support post-secondary courses. For these, having access to basic information about the opportunities that are out there can make a big difference, both in the types of education choices they make and whether they will continue in the first place. We are currently building a resource center in Elangata Wuas, Kajiado District. This idea would be easily replicable there, as well as in other communities.
This is a great idea that has been natured and needs to be conceived for the young generation. I worked with this project as a research assistance for three months, and i got to see the potential in this region and from the people themselves. Especially the young people who are cut off from the University high entry points . So, the idea of supporting and touching the majority non-university secondary graduates will spear head an educated generation not only with secondary education but with atleast a post-education education. The young generation is a real model and visionary for todays generation. They "stay locally, think nationally and i hope they will be acting globally" Best! AK.
I really like this idea. We often hear about financial barriers to education. Many studies focus on offering lower tuition fees, unfiroms, textbooks, meals to indivuals to entice them to go to school. Many policymakers advocate free primary and secondary education. While clearly important issues, there may be other factors influencing post-secondary participation. In particular, access to information about post-secondary opportunities might matter. If people do not even know about schools, universities, programs available, grants; but also about the jobs and wages available with such training, they might not even enter post-secondary education in the first place, even if they are not financially constrained. Young Generation aspires to enhance the information set available to potential students. This could attract many individuals in post-secondary education, at a fraction of the costs of the programs cited earlier (reduced tuition fees...). I really hope you will win this grant, that will allow you to start up your activity.
I like this idea since it is simple to put in practice, and it could have a real impact on the lives of the younger generations. Focusing on information is the way to go! It can only lead to better decisions.
This project seems like an ideal way of reaching out to young people in a sustainable, community-based way. I am excited to be in Kenya and see it in action soon! Good luck, everyone.
I think this initiative would have a big impact for rural kenyan communities. Often there is simply not enough information made available to primary and secondary students in these areas about their options for furthering their education after graduation. This program will help expand the horizons of countless youth and I am very excited about it. Best of luck!
I couldnt agree more with the engineers of such a noble project, it couldn't have come at a better time especially now that we talk of effective means to nurture minds of young average kenyans which are the overwhelming majority in this country. As a country we have always emphasized on empowering the young generation yet little or no effort is being channelled to salvage this time bomb menace. Ironically, we expect so much from such a generation hence we manifest animosity as a society. The practicability of this project is evident and it is encouraging that it can be replicated elsewhere in cost effective manner. How i wish it could be embraced positively
I have always had high opinions for such legendary people such as nyaga ndiga for their visionary leadership and have demeostarated outstanding means to be "engineer's of change" among rural livelihoods. Such wealth should be an inspiration to all. All the best!
This project has the potential to make a great contribution to the lives of talented young people that have limited access to information. By increasing the number of students continuing their education, this project will stimulate regional development and will pave the way for more equal educational opportunties.
This project provides the rural Kenyan student with information about educational alternatives to university. A student with this information makes a more informed decision because they better understand the breadth and quality of available opportunities, and will thus be able to make a choice that is more relevant to their unique life circumstances and goals. A student's decision regarding their education holds significant lifelong implications, as one's education is the foundational element for one's livlihood, well-being and overall quality of life. Informed decision-making is particularly important in the context of rural Africa because educational resources (including university spots and educational funding) are limited.
I think we definitely take for granted the efficiency and accessibility of the internet as our main source for information on higher education; applying for a master's degree and communicating with potential supervisors is simply at the (clichèd) click of a button. But having also spent some time in Kenya's rural Maasailand, it quickly becomes apparent that the dissemination of knowledge and information rests largely on word of mouth. It sounds to me like this initiative is grounded in the reality of the local context and seeks to genuinely work in sync with the needs of the youth. Given the almost ubiquitous enthusiasm and thirst for learning I met in Elangata Wuas, I have no doubt the initiative will have a positive impact.
"Information is power". The initiative is one that is aiming at providing the youths at grassroot level with power to acquire knowlledge about schooling chances and most importantly chances to excell academically and thereby unearthing talents and abilities which may otherwise been forgotten; Thanks to Green Power_Young Genaration
It would be amazing to see the impact the project would create in the society. The project is very practical considering that most youth fail to attend post-secondary education due it is about to address. Great initiative!
I have read many of the other entries, concerning this competition, and have felt compelled to leave a comment on this specific entry. I find that there has been a lack of focus on Kenya's youth, which is a complete shame seeing as the country's future lays in their hands. Primary education has been improved by providing it as a free government paid service, but it seems as though they have forgotten about the generation which comes after. University, and post-secondary education is a key factor in generating success and propelling the minds of the future for Kenya's development.
Many of the other entries put focus on very unfeasible initiatives and rely heavily on computers and other technologies which do not work well in this country- the power outages and lack of access to fast and inefficient internet act as a barrier for these types of projects. Whereas this entry has found a practicle, feasible, and on the ground solution to penetrate the minds of rural youth in order to stimulate a interest in post-secondary institutions. Bravo and congradulations on this wonderful idea. On behalf of the Young Greens of Canada, I wish you the best of success with your initiative and in this competition
Communication is the key to enlighten, inform, educate, empower and learn from our environment socially and economically and politically,i guess this project has much to do in all this.Bravo
I like this initiative, during times in which the majority of the population shifts from rural areas to cities and uncertainties caused by climatic changes bring about the need for thinking on how to adapt on the use natural resources (e.g. Mau forest complex, Samburu/Turkana cattle). Knowledge is power, so education of rural communities and especially it's youth is dearly needed, both for farming communities (Kirinyaga) and pastoralists (Elangata Wuas) alike.
This proposed initiative for improving accessibility to information on educational opportunities is an innovative and effective means to empower youth. As a Director of the McGill Legal Information Clinic, I can attest to how access to information is a powerful tool, which changes lives and opens up previously unseen opportunities. This initiative will help this disadvantaged community overcome one of the many existing barriers to education. The far-reaching benefits will be seen by the youth themselves, their families, as well as the entire community and its future generations. Finally, I am pleased by the high level of local ownership of this initiative, ensuring its sustainability and responsiveness to the needs of the community.
This is a great idea. I wish something like this existed here in Canada. With all of the access we have to information it is still difficult to find universities and programs unless you know exactly what you are looking for.
What a fabulous idea to help those that have little or no access to this type of information find appropriate means to further their education, knowledge and skills!
This is a wonderful idea for a project which can really help rural youth make informed decisions about their education and their future. While I was working in rural Kenya with Indigenous Information Network, I frequently encountered the frustration that youth feel because of lack of access to information -- it's something that holds them back from exploring opportunities which could change their lives and their communities. Green Power sounds like a simple but very effective idea that can help rectify this situation. I hope this initiative spreads to other regions of Kenya and East Africa. Good luck!
I think this project will definitely benefit the rural youth in Kenya and even other parts if it starts out as a success. I think this idea is quite valuable and wish you all the best.
As a student myself, I deem education highly important. For my own internship in Kenya, I partly focus on education; many children cannot go to school still. But not only primary and secondary school are important; especially continuation of schooling gives them the chances they need in life. This project will certainly enable more young people in Kenya to find the means to continue their schooling: a very important project!

These are the types of development ideas which should be encouraged. I couldn't think of anything more ideal

Great ideas ! Education is obviously a crucial step toward development. The fact that the project involves local communities is also very promising.
Good luck !
