It is definitely an issue we’ve considered. So far we’ve found the classroom teachers are initially excited by all the new supplies and ideas for teaching English. This enthusiasm is maintained throughout the month-long period that the education team spends in the classroom, providing co-teaching support. We realize though that after we leave, teacher interest and motivation may wane. As a result we do a second month-long on site follow-up as soon as we can in an effort to better inculcate the new teaching methods. Our hope, as funding increases, is to provide a third month of on-site follow-up as well. It’s our experience that making changes in an existing system takes time and effort, and frequent follow-up. I’m very interested in what you’re doing but unfortunately the website link you listed took me to “page not found.” I would love any input you have and to open a dialogue with you. Members of our education team will be back in the U.S. in August and I’m sure they would love to share their experience with you. Thank you for your interest! Sheryl Seyfert
I really like this project about education for children whom are in risk situation, especially in Tanzania. I think is necessary our commitment through this cause. Congratulations!
This initiative is a critical effort to help Tanzanian children improve their lives and give them a brighter, more productive and rewarding future. I hope that CHANGEMAKERS will see fit to grant the Mobile Resource Center badly-needed funds to continue and expand their efforts.
What I like about your idea is your ongoing support of the local teachers. It isn’t enough to introduce new methods during a weekend or week-long workshop. I also like that it’s hands on. Your education team doesn’t merely tell the teachers how to improve their English instruction but actually works with them during the two month-long visits.
This program is a terrific way to both "train" teachers of English while demonstrating the benefits of the training through the co-teaching element of the program. It makes the theoretical training "real" while at the same time instilling the local teachers with the confidence necessary to use the new teaching methodology in front of the classroom with the aid of the volunteer educators.
This initiative should also have the effect of assisting the local teachers in continuing the use of this teaching methodology after the volunteer educators have left. The aspect of the initiative that makes additional English books, lesson plans, and school materials available to the teachers and students provides additional incentive to the local teachers to continue using the new teaching methodology by providing a natural periodic follow-up as previously used English books and lesson plans are collected and new ones are dropped off.
I've have read much about TACODA and their initiatives to aid the children of Tanzania. I applaud you for your past success and future efforts to improve the lives of these children. This particular initiative is challenging yet necessary!
Providing education & resources to the children is the first step toward improving the lives, economy, and future of the entire country. I support your mission and would donate myself if I was able! Wishing you all the support in the world to complete this powerful initiative!
This project is extremely valuable and desperately needed to helping educate the children of Tanzania which will greatly impact their future opportunities. Education is the key to a successful country and will improve the economy.
The program idea is excellent in that it utlizes the skills, knowlege, and resources that American teachers have to improve and train the local teachers so they can have a long term impact on their community using the skkills they learn even after the temporary teachers leave.
I have been making donations to the Tacoda House for a few years now. My only wish is that I could make bigger contributions. These kids need our help and if we don't give it, they will be lost!
I support TACODA and the Jim Arden Foundation in their work on improving the life of children in Tanzania and ensuring a better future through education. Mr. Arden has a background in education, and as an educator myself I appreciate the value of the work he is doing.
I had the privilege of being taught by Jim Arden in 1993 and of accompanying him to Botswana in 1994. His dedication to education and to supporting education and aide in Africa have been unfaltering and inspiring. His work with TACODA is so impressive and deserves all the support available. I am honored to be friend of the Ardens' and to be a part of their endeavor to bring education to Tanzania.
Tacoda and the Jim Arden Foundation is the brainchild of an amazing educator who has inspired many young people as Middle School science teacher in Connecticut . Jim Arden continues to spearhead innovation in the education of the disadvantaged in Tanzania. Despite minimal funding, this organization has already changed the lives of many orphaned, young boys. Any help given to Tacoda goes directly to furthering its educational mission.
Education is the key to a stable society, a successful democracy and a workforce that can build a modern economy. The program idea is excellent in that it utlizes the skills, knowlege, and resources that American teachers have to improve and train the local teachers so they can have a long term impact on their community using the skills they learn even after the temporary teachers leave.
I have know Jim and Donata Arden for many many years and they are serious and dedicated as demostrated by their having put all their time, energy and personal resources to creating a meaningful and lasting way to directly help the children of Tanzania.
For many years I have followed with interest the work Mary Dupont, her family and friends have been doing on behalf of Tacoda. It is essential these children receive the proper books and learning materials in order to develop their education, imagination and realize their full potential to become self-sufficient. The hard work and dedication every member of the team devotes to this very worthwhile cause gives the children the opportunity to one day be independent and give back to their community!
I am the founder of TACODA and I deeply believe that, this program has helped improve English proficiency in the local schools of Arusha,Tanzania. It is our hope that we will get more funding for this initiative so that we can reach out to more schools.
Excellent! I applaud this project because it is well thought out and necessary for the community. Students will boost their confidence by improving their English skills and learn to work at their full potential. They will have resources and good teachers and mentors to guide them along the way. Truly wonderful.
I love this idea and this program! It can really help the kids to really change their life by education, and also this concept can help not only the kids in Tanzania, but also other regions in the world! Wish there will be more children recieve your active, and really appreciate your effort for everything!

Out of curiosity, to what extent is teacher motivation a challenge in your context?

I travel to Tanzania frequently I know first hand how valuable mobile education units are.
