Describe your idea in fewer than 50 words.
With the establishment of the community library we will improve the standards of education and assist in producing a healthy, knowledgeable, and skilled work force in Ekiti State as a whole. This project idea will also help motivate the educational administrators, policymakers and (teachers) and the main stakeholder (students) to improve their community and schools for ultimate success.
What makes your idea unique?
1. This will be the very first community library in Ekiti State and particularly in Emure Ekiti.
2. This will provide new incentives for learning and personal growth.
3. The King, The Governor and the Commissioners express their concern for the future of community: the youths are leaving the village to go to the cities to find bare subsistence level jobs. As a result, the future of the community is in jeopardy. Providing adequate educational opportunities and programs (slated for the library use) will change their view.
4. It provides a healthy outlet for the youth people in the community to have a place to go; to broaden their minds and outlook to new ways of thinking.
5. This library brings to the community a 20th century outlook to begin to standardize their lives, by providing a common area for the community to learn together.
6. While the primary target is the children within the community, parents are encouraged to be part of the system.
7. The community believes in “hand up” not “hand out.” As such, it will be the very first community project where the community is involved in setting up the library. This will ultimately encourage a sense of pride and ownership amongst the youths.
8. The “Readers are Leaders” yearly book festival will provide communal opportunities for villagers to mingle with outside communities and scholars from other parts of the country.
9. “5 Day Leadership Camp” is the very first initiative in Ekiti State which we envisioned to be a model.

Describe the primary problem(s) that your project is addressing.
Though Ekiti State of Nigeria is specifically known as “Fountain of Knowledge” where education is viewed as a tool for self and communal development, it has not brought much impact to the people of Ekiti as a whole. According to a report released by the Ekiti State Government in 2009, indigenes between the ages of 11 and 60 years old require empowerment via education and training for rapid socio-economic development of the state.
The Adassa Adumori Foundation, Inc (USA) and Nigeria chapters help children living in remote Nigeria to overcome poverty by providing educational tools which empower, motivate, instruct and ultimately catapult them to “living their best lives.”
In Emure Ekiti, our target community, the children are not only smart but eager to learn. Yet this has been hindered by the lack of educational and instructional books. As a result of this impediment, children often drop out of schools before their 9th grade. My first visit to my community, after 23 years of absence brought tears to my eyes. There were sheds called schools; schools with no basic facilities; empty libraries, yet eyes filled with hope.
In light of these, we seek to address two areas identified by the State Commissioner of Education & Technology during our technical session at the Governor’s office on January 19, 2009 at Ekiti State. These problems are as followed: Lack of Finances: Many children in this community live with their grandparents because their parents are not involved either due to untimely deaths or severe poverty. A 15 year old girl told me she is hopeful that she will one day be an engineer but for now, she did not know how it would happen as her mother is frail and unable to fend for her. The Second Problem identified is the Lack of Quality Education in Emure Ekiti. My team and I met with several school children who study science without the practical aspect. We saw schools with empty science labs and children learning the English Language without books to read. Children want to read but there is absolutely noting to read. Teachers seek assistance in instructional tools but they manage empty classes.
How We Are Addressing These Problems:
January 2009, with the help of individuals and small business men & women from Tennessee, USA, we were able to award three Scholarships to three deserving kids. Because of these scholarships, our young recipients now have a chance to not only stay in school but are able to progress to secondary levels and ultimately university. In this community, it costs $40 per semester to keep a child in school. Our goal is to award at least 20 more scholarships in January 2010. Currently, under the supervision of the King, the Educational Committee which we have set up are identifying children in need within the community. Sadly to say, this encompasses >95% of the children in the community.
To address the problem of “Lack of Quality Education,” we are embarking on an initiative called “Readers Are Leaders” a book festival which will be launched January 2010 in Emure Ekiti. This initiative will be combined with our “Get Real Leadership Camp for Youths” which is in the works and slated for launch in January 2010. Our last trip to the community revealed the dire need for programs which empower the Youths through quality education. To this effect, we are opening the very first community Library in Ekiti State. This Library will not only house books which the students as well as their parents and teachers will have access to; it will also be a meeting point for students chosen by the Community’s Education Committee to attend the “5 Day Get Real Leadership Camp.” It is our sincere hope that this leadership camp will expose attendees to valuable life skills and mentorship program. This proposed library will provide Computer capabilities and great opportunities for educational advancement for the children as well as the teachers within this community. Emure Ekiti has a recorded population of over 100,000 indigenes with more than 25% being children. Because some of our volunteers are educators, they continue to travel to Africa on a yearly basis to teach and empower African teachers on how to use the educational tools which the library will carry. In addition, many of the kids in this community have not seen computers nor used TVs before. The availability of such instructional tools at the community library will enhance their knowledge and make them competitive with their peers in other parts of the world. The library will include a weekly movie night, as well as children story reading circles. At Adassa Adumori Foundation we believe that all children deserve the basic needs which include quality education. We can provide this, if granted assistance.
The response we have received from our fellow counterparts in the US has been tremendous. Several Libraries and individuals have donated books; we are still in need of funds to purchase some technology—e.g. laptops, a printer, TV and VCR for the Library. In addition, without a grant, we will be unable to transport all the donated books etc we have received already from the US to Nigeria.
Describe the steps that your organization is taking to make your project successful.
1)AAF has over 12 volunteers who come from versed background from entrepreneurial ship to leadership management and education.
2)We have been provided opportunities to announce our needs for volunteers at churches and a radio show in the community where the US Organization is based-Tennessee.
3)The Educational Committee in Emure Ekiti meets every week to determine the needs of the students in various schools within the community. In addition, they are working on selecting candidates for the next Scholarship Drive in January 2010.
4) Our US team has secured over 1300 books for the library.
5) Gearing up for series of fundraisers to help with more relevant educational books. E.g. science books, computers, furniture for the library etc.
6)With the help of friends, we are currently working on an initiative “GIVEBACK TENNESSE,” encouraging fellow Tennesseans to give to Africa
Impact
What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Success in Year 1:
Financial: Currently, our administrative cost for the foundation is zero. All of our donations go directly to our projects. As we grow, we anticipate very minimal administrative costs which will be spent mainly by our volunteers. We also anticipate having to pay our training staff and teachers who will be training the ground teachers in the community. Our first project which the "Reader Are Leaders" not only entails getting books donated but we need funds such as the competitive price to ship these books to Nigeria.
Success in Year 2:
We seek to expand our scholarship funds which will be distributed through the "Youth Leadership Project" taught at the proposed library .. Our goal is to be able to provide at least 200 scholarships to graduates from this program
Success in Year 3:
Continuous financial support from individuals, special events, corporate and foundation funding to maintain the library as well as move to the next phase which is the establishment of the Community Enrichment Center Project. The Enrichment Center will include science labs, computer lab, afterschool academic enrichment, character development activities, and youth and adult leadership training programs and services.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?
Last year 2008, I had the opportunity to return back to my community after 23 years of absence. I was summoned by my dad; a prince to attend is brother’s coronation: King Emmanuel Adebayo. It was a very overwhelming experience going back to my community. More importantly, it was very moving watching all the people I left behind welcome me back to the community. On arrival to the coronation, I listened attentively to the King’s speech. In his speech, he asked for assistance from the indigenes of Emure Ekiti, who live in Diaspora. Not only did his plea touch my heart, I also realized that I could no longer pretend that Africa was not in dire need of assistance. I also realized that one person could not accomplish the great task of revitalizing a community which has been neglected for so long in Nigeria. While I enjoyed the coronation, I was also touched by the faces of the schools children as most of them walk 3-5 miles on way to school, many times on empty stomachs. I saw schools which were literally shed; schools with no bathrooms; no libraries. I met students who are out of school because their parents could not afford their uniforms or school supplies. In addition, I met young kids who were pleading for me to take them away so they can have a better lifestyle. My life has never been the same. As daunting as the task was, I came back just believing that people who have like minds, though they may not be Africans will be inspired to join in this cause.

This team continue to work with me in ensuring that everything we promised to do at the community, are being accomplished. We realize that funds are an essential part of this cause. Hence, this entry."

What would prevent your project from being a success?
Financial: Currently, our administrative cost for the foundation is zero. All of our donations go directly to our projects. As we grow, we anticipate very minimal administrative costs. We will also have to pay our educational trainers or staff who will be training the ground teachers and community leaders in the community.
With the launching of our immediate project:
2. “Readers Are Leaders” Community Library: Though books can be donated, funds are needed to ship them to Nigeria
The Foundation will rely on the funds raised and not just on our volunteers. The ability to meet our yearly budget will be a continuous concern as we earnestly pursue to accomplish our projects in Africa.
Our volunteers are expected to be trained and prepared for living outside of the US. Our volunteers will not only comprise of teachers but construction workers who will not only help in building our structures but will also teach our youths trades which they can be proud of. There is also the issue of teacher training in management and leadership skills as well as instructional tools for effective teaching. Our biggest asset is our consortium of experts who have trained in necessary topics and have developed proprietary modules; our personal relationship with the King of Emure Ekiti as well as our partnership with the governor
