Using ICT to improve teacher Performance and enhance students' understanding

The first part of my strategy is the development of very rich, student-centered, interactive multimedia Computer Based Learning software applications based on the Ghana Education Service approved syllabus. The second part is the training of teachers to effectively use ICT to enhance the Teaching-Learning situation. Finally, I hope to raise enough resources to set up E-Learning centers.

What makes your idea unique?

Students get excited when they interact with the computer and learn what they are taught at school through my software. It is improving students' attitudes towards their studies. Students have now developed interest and love in Mathematics and Science as after using my software. Teachers and school administrators who have gone through my training now use a short time to complete students' assessment. Provision has been made for slow, average, below-average and exceptional students.

What impact have you had?

In a recent research I carried out it showed clearly that students who use my software in addition to the normal classroom instruction exhibited positive attitudes towards the learning of Mathematics and Science. They progressed through the topics at different rates, did collaborative work, studied with excitement and broke lose from the fear of the subject. Students who naturally do not like Mathematics and Science are developing interest for them. I have one deaf student who uses my program. I occasionally interact with her and she is making progress in Maths and Science. A lot of teachers who have gone through my program now develop and use PowerPoint presentations in their class. I make several presentations on ICT's use in the teaching learning situation and the feedback is always positive.

Describe the primary problem(s) that your project is addressing.

1. Teachers have difficulty using traditional instructional methods to individualize their instruction to meet the needs of all their students.
2. Teachers have difficulty giving students immediate feedback when students are assessed.
3. Teachers have difficulty teaching some concepts that involve animations.
4. The challenge of teaching in a digital age has been catered for.
5. The west African Examination council has now began Electronic registration of candidates. Most school heads/Administrators hire people to register their students. With the training of teachers and heads, most schools are now registering their own students.

Describe the steps that your organization is taking to make your project successful.

1. We are operating in an office in Dansoman, a suburb of Accra.
2. We go to schools to make presentations about our software and the concept of integrating ICT in the teaching and learning process.
3. We organize school based ICT seminars for teachers and school heads.
4. We install our software on the computers of schools who will pay some money to support the running of the office.
5. We organize seminars at selected villages to sensitize them about the impact of ICT use in education.
