The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Due to economical situations, lack of opportunities and misinformation many outstanding students have no possibility to continue empowering themselves to use their abilities and knowledge, as a personal propose to reach their dreams and for the good of humanity, also they can be victims of bullying by their classmates at school and feel unmotivated or even misunderstood.
In Mexico does not exist many programs to target outstanding students. Also some of them manifest confusion, added to few opportunities for empowerment, despite their great interest to continue improving their skills, according to different abilities in Science, Arts or Sports.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

Students are selected after manifesting their interest to be part of the program and analyzing curriculum activities. Then, at the afternoon, 3 times per week, they receive free classes, according to topics they have chosen in arts, science and sports. Added to a workshop in quality of life and motivation, where they also met new people, similar to them and get along each other to build social relations of friendship and academic work.
They have possibility to point out their abilities and define in what topic they are better. Also students find information to be part in competitions such as Science Fairs, Olympiads in Science or Social Activism, representing one of the best opportunities for them, to create a project and contribute with their community.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

This program is currently running with 250 students, who are studying elementary, middle and high school through the whole State of Sinaloa, México. They have shown outstanding abilities in different competitions and most of them attend public schools. Actually the program is hosted in the Sciences Centre of Sinaloa in Culiacan, which is the capitol city, along with other four cities : Los Mochis, Guamuchil, Mocorito and Mazatlan.
This program also is complemented with cultural and academic trips to Mexico City, visiting different institutions recognized internationally, such as the Mexican Academy of Science, CINVESTAV, UNAM, Politécnico Nacional, INAOE, INTEL and Mexican Scholars Program in Nasa and Belin Blank Center in Iowa, USA, more than 150 students have taken part in the activities mentioned above.
Currently they have 60 projects of scientific research, going to be applied in the communities, 20 projects have obtained different prizes in national and international science fairs in Peru, USA, Spain, Paraguay, Brazil and Slovakia. 5 students have won national Olympiads in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, representing to Mexico in Argentina and Ecuador, added to that, a student chosen as a Global Changemaker by British Council and delegate of Mexico in The G(irls) 20 Summit, 2012.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

In the country there are 5 programs targeting brilliant students, however, some of them only focus in giving small amounts of cash payments to students and other programs give services to students whose can afford the cost. There is no program targeting brilliant students, especially for economically disadvantaged.
In each city where the program is applied, a teacher is a volunteer facilitator, developing the program in the school where they work, they organize media press, to give to know the project to the community, as well as recruit volunteer adults to impart the different workshops established in the program.

Social Impact

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

The project has expanded to five cities of the State of Sinaloa, increasing the amount of students from 23 to 250, after five years.

Students are more able to build social relationships, strengthening friendship and diminishing effects of bullying that they might receive at school. Currently 60 students are working in scientific research projects, aimed to the solution of problems such as clean water, environment, alternative energies, software for computing, nutritious food, better fertilizers for agricultural ground, poverty and empowerment. Students are in the stage of research, going to implement their projects in next years. However some of them are already working in their communities to create awareness along with multiple activities in social issues, such as poverty, gender equality, environment and computing.

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

1. To increase the amount of teacher participants in the State of Sinaloa as well as students of
every municipality.

2. Increase the budget to give scholarships to students in needing, to attend the summits, science fairs and olympiads where they are accredited to participate.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

Students receive special guidance to develop their scientific projects in the Science Center of Sinaloa, however the main issue is the economical part, because the program has no enough money to transfer students from their hometown to the Science Center, neither to support with scholarships to students in needing, as well as to sponsor the different International events, where students are accredited to participate, because travel expenses must be covered by students. Along the year are made multiple fund raising activities to obtain money to give financial support, nevertheless the amount of winners increase just as the economical needing does.

Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact

Double the amount of outstanding students detected in Sinaloa State and volunteer teachers to involve them in ASES.

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your six-month milestone

Task 1

Social media diffusion of ASES, in order to call for applicants to attend the region where the program is already established.

Task 2

Select participants to start with classes and workshops.

Task 3

Students start working in some of the different activities they have chosen, such as research projects, science fairs, etc.

Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone

To expand ASES to each of the 18 municipalities of Sinaloa, to identify students with outstanding abilities to incorporate them

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your 12-month milestone

Task 1

Attend meetings with municipality authorities and regional secretaries of education, to establish a public place to host ASES

Task 2

As a result of the previous meeting, start up the detection program in every school of the State of Sinaloa.

Task 3

To start up classes and workshops. To share with the student, different competitions in Science Fairs, Science Olympics, etc.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]

The State of Sinaloa is one of the states with the highest rates in violence, some young people are involved in drug trafficking activities, nevertheless most of the people from Sinaloa are honest, good workers and change makers, also many students are outstanding in different areas, however some of them due to economical situation, misinformation or lack in opportunities cannot continue studying. If opportunities for young people are increased and other students know the stories of their successful classmates, they can get inspired and start to act different, then If they have a platform empowering themselves and getting involved in the solutions of the problems of their communities as well as continue studying and challenging society to the benefit of Sinaloa, violence rates will decrease.
