Problem:
Poverty-stricken South African children in state hospital wards are mostly HIV positive. Their depressed immune systems cannot easily cope with cancers, TB, and pneumonia. Hospital admissions are long and frequent. Children may lack the stamina or resources to attend school after discharge.
Actions:
Developed and introduced resource materials and practices collaboratively with hospitalised children 6 to 13 years old, found to be highly effective in changing attitudes and practice in health services.
Reason:
This is a project that will affect thousands or even tens of thousands of kids - in a way that will change their lives for the better, forever. It is also a project that will likely be applied in a way that children are heard and so given a voice, as partners in their own and others' health process. This project supports in its implementation a new social health-care paradigm in which children are active participants and contributors rather than "objects" of health care!
