The San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (SFGH) Volunteer Doula Program enhances education and support services for pregnant women that focus on reducing disparities in birth outcomes. The Program provides free pre-natal, birthing and post-partum doula support for mother’s delivering at SFGH as well as doula trainings for those interested in becoming doulas. Several studies have shown that use of doulas result in shorter labors, less use of pain medications, fewer medical interventions and a reduction of cesarean sections.
Reason:
All woman have a right to choose a safe and healthful birth experience, regardless of cultural, social or economic status. This project makes it possible for underserved women to access a doula for support before, during and after labor. Doulas provide much needed comfort and emotional support during the labor process, and, when necessary, act as the laboring mother's advocate.
