Mayo Clinic is the first and largest integrated academic medical group practice in the world. Physicians and scientists from every medical discipline work together to care for patients, educate the next generation of health care providers, and discover new therapies. They connect with common, integrated systems and a philosophy of "the needs of the patient come first." More than 2,500 physicians and scientists and 42,000 allied health staff work at the original clinic in Rochester, Minn., with newer clinics in Florida and Arizona, and a regional health system surrounding Rochester. Collectively, these clinics treat more than half a million people each year.

Established in 2008, the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation (CFI) uses a patient-centered focus to transform the way health care is experienced and delivered. CFI is a multidisciplinary center that includes practicing physicians and scientists, along with experts in research and service design, IT and project management. Central to the methodology used by CFI is design-thinking – introduced to the clinical practice at Mayo Clinic by the first known team of designers embedded in a medical practice. CFI design researchers have led several transformational changes in health care practices, following a long tradition of Mayo Clinic innovations focused on patient needs.
