Describe Your Idea
What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?
Media for Change would give a voice to those families and communities struggling with finding their missing loved ones. The national media tends to give disproportionate coverage to the plight of missing Caucasian females. Our organization would make covering the stories of underrepresented communities easier by doing the "leg work" for the media, as well as offer a place where family and community members can stay updated on cases, get information on joining search teams and report sightings or tips. We would offer the following:
-- A website featuring missing minority children with an interactive map that would connect viewers to a webpage featuring video of the family and community, photos, information on the missing individual and any updates or leads offered by investigators.
-- The organization would actively push for media attention by sending out press releases, photos and video to both local and national media.
-- We would enlist volunteers to create chapters in their local communities and actively use social marketing and church, temple and other community networks to market our organization as a place where people should turn to after a loved one goes missing. We would immediately send an individual to that location to speak with investigators, the family and community members to get video, pictures and information on the missing person.
-- We would especially enlist and market our organization towards young people who are more technologically savvy and are often self-made media makers. Millennials often have access to affordable video cameras, digital cameras and computers and are constantly online perusing websites and using social networking sites. We would use this to our advantage by building groups on Facebook and other social networking sites. We would also use a platform similar to Twitter to alert people of missing persons in their community. This would allow us to spread information quickly.
What will be the impact of your idea?
Often times, the socio-economic background of a missing child determines the level of intensity and depth of coverage in the national media. In recent times, the plight of well-off females (most often of a Caucasian background) has overshadowed the thousands of other missing children. As a result of a lack of media attention, missing minority and low-income individuals receive less attention from investigators, and in general have fewer people looking for them, including volunteer search teams. An organization devoted to spreading the word about these missing individuals is greatly needed. Providing information directly to the media, investigators and community members as soon as individuals are reported missing is essential. Time is of the essence when an individual goes missing and it is important to disseminate flyers, photos and as much information as possible in those early hours.
At the core of this cause is the intersection of community building and technology. We use media and technology to turn average citizens into advocates for the missing and unheard. This can be replicated in any community. My hope is that Media for Change can spread to communities across the world, especially those facing severe problems with human trafficking, kidnapping and child exploitation.
This Entry is about (Issues)
People: We are looking for ideas from people who can make them happen.
I am a professional writer and web editor with experience in desktop publishing, film editing and web design. My previous work experience includes media consulting, designing websites, conducting classes in web editing, as well as designing and editing newsletters. I currently work for a business to business media company where I write and edit email newletters, as well as manage and implement social marketing strategies for news websites. I am also a sworn Court Advocate for CASA of Washington, D.C., an organization which recruits and trains professionals to represent abused and neglected children in Washington, D.C.'s foster care system.
Our office will be headquartered in Washington, D.C. to take advantage of the political and media resources here, as well as opportunities to network with larger, more established non-profits in the area, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Our core group will begin with 5 individuals with experience in the following areas:
-- Community building, activism and advocacy
-- Web design, web development and database maintenance
-- Writing and media relations
-- Video, photography and interactive journalism
-- Missing persons, child's rights, sex trafficking and human rights advocacy
As community building is the core of our work, we would leverage the strength of the D.C. community by creating a management board consisting of community and professional leaders.
How much will it cost to launch your idea?
I will work for free until more funding is secured and I have recruited several volunteers to help with the start-up. We will seek funding from the public and private sector. Initial funding will go towards buying computers, building the website and missing person’s database, recruiting volunteers, creating materials to spread the word within church and community groups and securing a small office. Thanks to such sites as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, our social marketing will be free and easy to implement. Ongoing funding will be needed to hire a core staff, maintain the office and conduct internet and community outreach.
