Name Your Project

Describe Your Idea

What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?

To engage young people in a positive activity, providing easier access to hip hop dance at an affordable cost.

Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?

Kayzar Dance aims to provide opportunities for young people to enjoy a contemporary art form at low cost. Our goal is to make a positive impact on the community and ensure everybody has access to hip hop dance. Kayzar Dance offers a fun activity where young people can develop, gain confidence and be inspired to dance to their maximum potential.

What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change?

Dance classes can be expensive, excluding those from low income families. Kayzar Dance aims to provide affordable classes making hip hop dance accessible to all. This ensures those who might not normally be able to take part in such activities are given the opportunity to.

Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?

Kayzar Dance works in partnership with Brentwood Council with a pilot scheme in Hutton, Brentwood, Essex, offering subsidised rates on all our hip hop classes. Our affordability means those on low income families can take part in an activity they are often excluded from. Our streetdance, breakdance and hip hop classes are taught with bundles of energy and upbeat music creating an awesome atmosphere to inspire and appeal to our dancers. Kayzar Dance also works with several schools providing after school dance clubs to pupils.

How do you plan to grow your innovation?

Kayzar Dance hopes to expand into other areas over the next three years reaching a wider scope of the community and providing even more access to hip hop dance. Kayzar Dance is continuing to work in partnership with Brentwood Council over these next three years which should enable us to achieve our aims. I am also hoping to set up a partnership with other councils in the area to offer a similar project to more communities.

Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact.

To give everybody the opportunity to take part in and experience hip hop dance, making a positive impact on the community and young people.

What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries?

Many people from low income families who might not normally be able to take part in such activities have been able to do so due to the affordability of our classes and reduced rates for those on benefits. The intention of Kayzar Dance is to be available to everybody in the local community regardless of age, race, religion, class etc.

Please list any other measures reflective of the impact of your innovation?

Several of Kayzar Dance members were able to travel to Bremen, Germany to take part in the IDO World Hip Hop Championships. An experience that they may not normally have been able to take part in, and one that built their confidence and encouraged further development.

What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact?

The main concerns are securing the required funding to be able to continue to offer affordable dance classes and thus be accessible by those from low income families.

How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?

In 2007, Brentwood Borough Council subsidised Kayzar Dance workshops in Hutton allowing me to offer affordable classes to the community. We hope to continue our partnership with the council, but also to receive funding elsewhere.

If known, provide information on your finances and organization.

What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?

with Kayzar Dance being run by me as an individual in my spare time rather than a charity etc, I find it difficult to find funding to expand projects.

What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.

I am from Tunisia where I danced regularly as part of an international animation team. On arrival in the UK I discovered a lack of hip hop dance in my home town coupled with a lack of facilities for young people often leading to anti social behaviour. I decided that I wanted to use my passion and skill for hip hop dancing to inspire young people, providing easier access to dance in the local area and hopefully offering an alternative to anti social behaviour that enables young people to develop and aspire. After gaining the qualifications needed for me to do this I began teaching at several dance schools, schools and leisure centres. Since beginning, the project has grown successfully and I hope it continues to do so attracting and making an impact on more young people.

Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers marketing material.

I began dancing as a teenger in my home country of tunisia. I taught myself breakdance and hip hop dance styles by watching tv and videos and went on to win competitions locally and nationally. I then worked as part of an international animation team at a renowned hotel chain. On arrival in the UK I discovered a lack of hip hop dance in my home town. I embarked on an IDTA course to give me qualifications to teach dance to young people.

How did you hear about this contest and what is your main incentive to participate? (this is confidential)

I received an email telling me about changemakers, and decided to participate to enable my project to reach a wider area of the community and thus achieve its goals having a positive impact on the local community and young people, and keeping the hip hop dance style alive.
