Hi Beth,
We'd love to learn more about your work. Could you do your best to expand upon the entry form? There are several questions that you have left blank.
Thanks!

Interested in dialogue/exchange!

Hi Beth!

I am interested in chatting with you about your work with Boys Council. You are "spot on" in your response to the "changemaker" question that "change" begins with dialogue. For almost 13 years now, in Washington, DC we (Life Pieces To Masterpieces, Inc. - Go to www.lifepieces.org for more info), have used "circle time" at the end of every day. During this time, we may engage in a series of mind, body, spirit awakening physical excercises/yoga. We then engage the apprentices (participants) in various forms of meditation (deep breathing excercises/ brain respiration) etc. Then we have "sharing time". We have found this to be EXTREMELY affective in the healthy development of our young men and boys.

We are in the process of capturing the work we have done over the years, much of which has been quite intuitively created and implemented and communicate what we call our "Human Development System" in the form of a comprehensive curriculum and training series that could potentially benefit a broad range of youth and adults. I would welcome an exchange of ideas since you already have a curriculum in place.

Lastly, in your evaluative process, what do you think about videotaping the sessions as a means of establishing baselines and tracking progress?

Congratulations on what truly appears to be a potentially valuable program to help our young men and boys regain "VOICE".

In Peace

exchange of ideas/dialogue

Hi Mary,
Thank you for your encouraging words about the Boys Council program. I am so excited to read about the circle work you do, with the breathing/yoga/exercises, and then dialogue time. Your website is beautiful and delightful, and just spreads the joy and commitment you are living out. How great to read the boys' poetry and view their paintings.

I am training in Anchorage this week on the Girls Circle model. One of the facilitators also works with middle school boys and is wanting to implement Boys Council. His experience is that the middle school boys are uncomfortable with talking unless they've really done some physical games first. Otherwise, they're uneasy in the talking environment. I'm excited to read of your experiences offering physical components that focus on breath, meditation, and other mind/body/spirit activities, and to read of your success with these. I think people really want to learn about what works well with boys, and I can see that your shining success and outcomes with the D.C. area boys shows the power of the work and approach you're taking. So, YES, let's talk more about your curriculum and our mutual interests.

Videotaping, especially where the boys can do the taping and create the documentation themselves, is a great idea to track progress and maybe increase their participation and skill building too. Thanks for a great idea!

I'll be in touch with you and hope we can talk in next couple of weeks!

Thanks so much and congratulations on your inspiring programs with LPTM.
