Peace and Reconciliation

Describe Your Idea

What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?

Fund drive to support the victims of violence after Kenya’s general elections, & a youth soccer tournament to create peace and reconciliation among the youth &

Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?

Due to unrest that’s going on in Kenya, CASL has urgently established an initiative dubbed, Kiambiu Slum Relief Program(KSRP)whose sole purpose is to respond to the aftermath of Kenya’s election violence that crowded most parts of the country including Kiambiu area.Kiambiu is a slum area with a population of over 30,000 people. The aftermath of general election which was fueled by ethnic tribes fighting each other has resulted to the torching of sulcano primary school, a stronghold pilot program base of CASL’s HIV/AIDS intervention program hosting over 800 student participants of our program. These students and families have been rendered homeless and have no school to go to.

What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change?

Due to this violence, over 20,000 families have been rendered homeless with No food, water, clothing, beddings and proper health care. We hope to instill a sense of hope in this difficult time by helping to provide most of the most basic needs.

Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?

CASL staff members and peer educators will organize a funds drive dubbed, Kiambiu Slum Relief Program (KSRP) to support the affected youth and their families by purchasing clothings, beddings, food stuff and building materials. Besides this, CASL will organize a youth soccer tournament with a theme “Peace and Reconciliation” to regain their hope to them and the entire community.

How do you plan to grow your innovation?

With funds received from the initiative, CASL will purchase the most needed items and impact the lives of the affected youth and their families by restoring hope as well as building up peace amongst the ethnic groups of the entire Kiambiu slum and Kenya at large. The tournament will build hope for the youth as they will grow up with a great sense of brotherhood and socialization.

Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact.

Through the KSRP initiative, CASL intends to turn around, restore and support the lives of over 20,000 families living in Kiambiu slum

What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries?

Our intention is to support ALL the affected youth and their families. The beneficiaries are the affected youth and their families who live in Kiambiu Slum.

How many people have you served directly?

The potential demand for CASL’s innovation is funding that would enable us to give effective and efficient support to the victims Kiambiu slum. But the people of Kenya is currently in desperate need of our work to bring hope to their lives and try to heal after the ethnic violence.

What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?

Due to the increased suffering that is caused by lack of good shelter, clothing, health and education, affected people living in Kiambiu,CASL has come up with its scant resources to reaching out these families by organizing a funds drive to support them effectively and adequately to make them regain their normal life

What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.

The origin of this innovation is to restore life and hope to these affected families. Seeing the devastation around us, we had to step in and immediate create an intervention to counteract the horrible recent events.
