Name Your Project

Raising Models & Strengthen Peace Through A Sustainable “Sportodrama” Community Ambassador Football Program For Nigerian Youth

Describe Your Idea

What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?

Creating “sportodrama” to inform, inspire & educate the public to strengthen peace, foster positive mental attitude while engaging youth from different militant groups in a football tournament.

Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?

“Sportodrama” uniqueness is the integration of half-time stage drama designed to enter- educate the public about pressing issues and other contemporary problems facing our communities e.g HIV/AIDS, youth militant e.t.c while organizing different football programming such as “Football For Peace”, Football For Hope”, “Football For Development” e.t.c aimed to engage different militant youths and other youth groups who shall become their communities representatives as sport ambassadors to the grand finale of the Ambassador Games.

What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change?

Youth militancy and HIV/AIDS spread are too often to be left to government alone. Sportodrama is an integrated community ambassador football approach designed to inform, educate and inspire the youth with a view to reduce the rate of youth militancy, HIV/AIDS spread and other societal ills.

Nigeria is a multicultural country of over 140 million population with over 65% were youths (2006 census). Unemployment, lack of enabling environment to turn good ideas into reality and social services has turned many Nigerian youth to high risk activities. Among these include militancy, drug-use and trafficking, delinquency, internet fraud etc fill in their time.

In the Niger-delta region-oil rich region of the country that control 95% of our economy, youth militancy is at the highest and alarming rate there due to unemployment. The various militant groups have resulted into human kidnapping, terrorism and general destruction of lives and

Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?

The need for a sustainable “sportodrama” and other creative pursuit for Nigerian youth cannot be over-emphasized. Such initiatives shall redirect and channel youth energy and enthusiasm in productive activities, thereby reducing crime and peace strengthened.

A well structure Sportodrama Community Ambassador Football (SCAF) Programs that will engage these identified militant groups from these communities will be ideal to use “Sportodrama” to provide appropriate enlightenment, capacity building and leadership skills needed. Through these, It would develop new responsible leaders from these groups.

Through SCAF and FLEM program, People To People will reach in and out-of school youths in various communities in Nigeria to help build their lifeskills and leadership skills through sportodrama approach that will foster peer-to-peer education model

How do you plan to grow your innovation?

Our overall goal is to create a “sustainable sportodrama” in all our Community Ambassador Football Programs through regular inter-community leagues and Ambassadors tournaments. The programs are meant for both in and out-of school youths (Male and Female) below the age of 25yrs to attract a large number of spectators.

Last year, People To People launched “Football For Peace” Program otherwise known as Eisenhower Cup at the Nigerian Armed Force Resttlement Centre, Oshodi with 32 grassroot football teams participated where the “sportodrama” first introduced.

Many local volunteers have shown interest in our initiative and their willingness to serve as our mobilization tool for our subsequent football programs.

Our experience has shown that in order to have a level of sustainability for a long term, we have to strengthen our capacity building, seek for technical support and major sponsorship. We also need to network with other organizations of similar goals to share experience and transfer skills and knowledge through exchanges.

Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact.

A “sustainable sportodrama” in all our Community Ambassador Football Programs through regular regional leagues and Ambassadors tournaments.

What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries?

Through the use of Sportodrama approach, PTP will develop new role models from various militant youth groups and create a positive attitudinal change among people where appropriate enlightenment, lifeskills and leadership skills will be communicated to them, and thus will impact positively to the lives of the youth as many of the will continue to renounce the militancy groups to a more productive activities and integrated back to the communities. Militant Youth groups are our major target. Other youth groups are also encouraged to participate. Our first Football For Peace program held last year registered 32 grassroot teams (Male) with more than 1000 youths directly involved in the planning, officiating and execution of the tournament. 10% of these youth participated in our football clinic on Peace building and non-Violence.

How many people have you served directly?

Through SCAF program, we intend to serve over 100 communities representing both the Niger-delta Region, South West and North of Nigeria in the next 2 years. Approximately, over 3,000 youth will be directly involved in the program.

How many people have you served indirectly?

Our Sportodrama CAF program will indirectly reach over 25,000 people in more than 100 communities in a period of 3 years.

Please list any other measures reflective of the impact of your innovation?

PTP has already established People To People Football Academy –which serve as ideal platform to groom the identified role models into professional players. Many youths have already appreciating this effort and commence registration into the Academy after the just concluded Eisenhower Cup “Football For Peace “ Program.

What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact?

Funding to successfully implement the project has been the major challenges we face as organization. The first edition of our Sportodrama program tagged “Football For Peace” was self funded and through team registration only. Though a modest achievement was made on this first one, our overall vision needs a holistic approach to successfully implement the overall concept.

We need long-term strategic technical & donor partners to sustain this initiative to build new leaders, reduce crime and to strengthen peace in our communities

How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?

Our funds come through membership fees, consultancy services, program registration and occasionally with individual donations. For sustainability of the SCAP program, we are looking at the possibilities of coming up with diverse funding sources and opportunities locally and internationally and to come up with social enterprise activities in order to help self-finance some of the program activities and contribute towards the overall financial sustainability and diversification.

If known, provide information on your finances and organization.

Our annual budget to successfully implement our programs and activities is
approximately N20,000,000.00 which is been expected from sponsorships, donations and consultancy, but no major revenue were generated.

• Number of staff:
• full-time: 5
• part-time 7
• volunteers: 125

What is the potential demand for your innovation?

The unemployment rate is extremely high among youth which has contributed to the ever increased in the numbers of militants group in the country. Faced with such situation, we shall device means of providing incentives to all our volunteers.

What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?

Local fundraising activities has been tough but cannot be over-emphasized. We hope to seek other means of funding through donor agencies and corporate bodies. If no funding is coming up, the program will be discontinue.

What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.

Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the world, boasting of a population of over 140 million. It has the potentials to become one of the leading economies in the world. The country is bedeviled with a lot of crisis, ranging from the Niger Delta environmental crises, regional militias, ethnic crisis. The country presently suffers from extreme poverty, the vast minerals in the country has not helped matters. Over 73 million people live on less than one dollar per day.

The country has some of the worst social indicators in the world, although an oil producer, one in every five children dies before the age of five. The Niger Delta region suffers most from this problem, with over 70% of the Nation’s income from the area. Governments’ intervention is commendable but inadequate.

Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers marketing material.

My name is Rahman Olasupo Mogaji, an indigene of Ijebu-ode in Ogun State of South-Western Nigeria. Grew up in the city of Lagos. A graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State. I am 32yrs old, 6 of a polygamous family of 10. A young visionary, peace advocate and a victim of circumstance. My passion is my country and my constituency – Youth, and with further interest in International Development.

In January 15,1996, during my first year in University, I was mistakenly detained for over two weeks in prison for an offence I never think of, talkless of committing. Before that, I had never been in any police station before, not to talk of detained. My initial understanding of people in prisons are said to be criminals but I was wrong as my own case be and many others. I had a very bitter experience in the prison custody and to my surprise the 95% of population of the inmates are youths. 75% of them are confirmed criminals while the rest were just victims. I have been trying to find answer to my question: Why YOUTH? I refused to accept my situation and therefore want to make a change.

However, my prison experience has widened my thoughts about different scope of life. Since then, I had devoted my time and energy in finding a lasting means of engaging youth in productive activities. From my involvement in the establishment of Crossworld International, FUTA in 1996 to the pioneering of Youth-Aid and Leadership Development Network (YALDNet) where Future Leaders Mentoring Session (FLEMS) program was first initiated by me in 2000. To my credit while in the University, I have written many articles that won recommendations both locally and internationally. Among them include: My Vision for Nigeria by 2040 (organized by ALF/DTN 2000), The Challenge of Nigeria Youth: home and Abroad (School Magazine- 1997), Global Responsibility: Our Responsibility (ISFIT-01 Norway), Our World: Our Choice and Future of Peace (ISWI-01 Germany) to mention a few.

In 2004, I had served as Youth Corp member in a village called Karaye in Kano State, Northern part of Nigeria during my National Youth Service Corp. I pioneered a peace program tagged “Walk for Peace” for the youth in the community to quell the aftermath effect of ethno-religion crisis that erupted between Kano and Jos in May 2004 with over 20,000 casualties and more than 2,500 death recorded during the crisis. I also initiated “Be The Change” Partners and served the community in providing free ICT training to over 20 local teachers as well as 50 students which helped the community in the on-line examination registration of their wards that year it was first introduced by the examination board.

In 2005 and 2006, our organization People To People International-Lagos, Nigeria Chapter was appointed the National Lead Agency for Global Youth Service Day celebration in Nigeria where I was made National Coordinator. Under my leadership, a national summit was successfully organized with no external funding, to unite all local agencies into one umbrella to jointly organize a National “Walk for Peace” Rally in 2006.

To date, I have been an ardent advocate of peace, youth empowerment and leadership development. My dream is a very precarious one. I dream of a nation where thousands of people, youth in particular, will be working together, neither divided by tribe, religion nor economic circumstances towards the realization of “The Nigeria Dream” – A Peaceful and developed economy by the

How did you hear about this contest and what is your main incentive to participate? (this is confidential)

I got to know about the Contest through a friend who advised me to put in for the contest having gone through my previous activities. He told me that I got all what its takes to be an Ashoka Fellow. Having explained who an Ashoka Fellow is, I was motivated to participate in this contest.

Moreso, I felt by putting into the contest will provide me a very vital platform to network with people who might be interest in my project and subsequently, establish a mutual working relationship.
