What makes your approach innovative?
Healthy Kids, Healthy Forests is the first time the Guatemalan Ministries of Health, Education and Agriculture have collaborated to implement a rural development program. This is also the first time most Guatemalan families have eaten Maya Nut because deforestation and globalization have greatly reduced rural appreciation of traditional foods.

Healthy Kids, Healthy Forests is an innovative market-driven rainforest restoration program which motivates communities to reforest with Maya Nut, a native, nutritious, delicious rainforest tree seed. By targeting schools as the market, HKHF ensures a consistent and reliable local market for Maya Nut products from rural women’s cooperatives.
How will you sustain your solution?
Healthy Kids, Healthy Forests program need only be subsidized the first 6 months of implementation in most communities. This is because once communities become convinced of the food value and acceptability of Maya Nut lunches, they are willing to purchase Maya Nut lunches instead of the conventional corn-soy-based lunches currently served. Long term sustainability is guaranteed by the reforestation of at least 2000 Maya Nut trees in each participating community.
