Describe Your Idea

Rural women groups in an organized group to showcase collaborative innovative farming projects. The women will be equipped with knowledge and skills and also given a start up for household projects. This is hoped to be rolled over to the different women in the village over the years.

What makes your idea unique?

The innovation promotes an ecosystem whose each segment is a lesson for the public, a money maker for the farmer and a food for other segments. Plants e.g. flowers for beautification, trees for shed, vegetables and fruits and grass apart from using most of them at the home of the women, the nursery makes them available in great numbers to other people. Plants that are not eaten or sold are fed to the heifer. The droppings (urine and feces) from the heifer are fed to our biogas digester to get biogas for lighting and cooking. Excess cow dung is also used to produce charcoal balls which are used for cooking. The slurry will be a fertilser.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

No

What impact have you had?

We are a farm open to the public that learns from the technologies and innovations we employ in our integrated farming. These are emulated by those interested in farming and innovation. Thus we help to use the environment wisely by eliminating putting greenhouse gases into the environment and cutting trees by providing alternatives.

Problem

Having a critical mass of people innovating farming to yield more in an environmentally friendly way.

Actions

Already in place is the demonstration of what we are promoting. We have developed curriculum for training from 3 hours to a whole week to enable people begin applying the innovations.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

On March, 4th 2008 two armed young men put my husband at gun point as he was returning home. They entered our house and said, “we are thieves; all we want is money”. I decided to devise a better way for the youth to earn a living especially knowing that the number of crime cases reported to police increased by 21% since 2002 (Uganda National Bureau of Statistics Abstract, 2009). I opened Gudie leisure farm (GLF) www.gudiefarm.webs.com to the public and to specifically promote reflection for purposeful living. When we reach the women we reach the whole family.
