Project Description:

Teachers and students at The Beacon School in the Bahamas embarked on a 100 Day Health Challenge. Our goal was to change the way our children eat, by eliminating junk foods high in salt and sugar content. We provided students with healthier drink, snack and lunch alternatives at the school's tuck shop. For example, only water, juices or milk were available for purchase at the tuck shop. We also initiated an exercise and recreational program during lunch breaks. Students were also encouraged to take this message home to other family members.

Sheryl is nominating this project because:

Society seldom views persons with handicapping condition as being able to lead the way in effecting change in the community in which they live. Our special students adapted to their changed diet very quickly and were also eager to share this good news with others. They took their message many steps further by talking to people about making holistically appropriate choices - not only in how they eat but also spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially. It was a joy to see them embrace this health challenge in such innovative ways.
