What if we could authentically relive the past by a means of travel that enables us to explore, learn and experience small communities rich in stories of place, history and culture. A tall ship offers a means of discovering new places, while gently benefiting our hosts and leaving little or no trace of own visit there. Supported by ocean breezes and in the company of a small group of fellow travelers, we can travel back in time.

Brian is nominating this project because:

Caledonia, a gentle giant that leaves no trace. She is an authentic ocean explorer’s dream. Caledonia, is a 245’ square-rigged barquentine weighing in at 984 tons and sporting 17, 000 sq feet of sail. She is the largest traditional sailing ship built in Canada in the last 100 years whose interior and exterior furnishings are made of finely crafted, responsibly grown Canadian wood. Caledonia converts sea water into drinking water through its own desalination treatment system and uses an on-board sewage treatment plant to ensure a 100 percent output of treated water. Drawing only 15’ of draft, she is able to sail to unique small harbours on Canada’s east coast and Caribbean islands, enhancing many small communities economic base. All of the food consumed on the Caledonia is procured at local ports of call. Each voyage is designed around opportunities to explore history, culture and geography. Local cuisine, guest speakers/artists/entertainers, enrich the traveller’s experience and discovery of place. Organized shore excursions; biking, hiking, snorkeling, diving and kayaking provide healthy engagement for any level of explorer. Caledonia provides a hands-on historic geotourism experience leaving the smallest possible footprint of your visit.
