Hi Bert,
I love AS220's comprehensive approach to community-building and how you've created a financially sustainable model. What advice would you give to other organizations who would like to replicate AS220's work in their own communities?
Thanks!
Alexis
Although I believe the ingredients for an AS220-type community exists in many places, it is critical to understand that each community has unique dynamics. It is important to understand that AS220 was locally and organically grown. Creating a project like AS220 doesn't start from the top and work down. In my opinion, it's critical to identify that individual within a given community whose vision is to create the type of community we've created here at AS220. Many communities already have both formal and informal associations of artists, but it will inevitably fall on the shoulders of a single, passionate individual to drive the process every day, day after day, month year etc. This individual will need to be savvy, or willing to learn all the various political and social dynamics unique to their community, which will be needed to initiate and develop such a project. This person will need to be willing to bridge the gap between her or his creative community and the systems that will be needed to create and sustain this effort. Although AS220 in its current state is very complex and dynamic, it is important to realize this was and is an ongoing learning process, one foot in front of the other.

“The way that this initiative addresses low income communities through an educational platform to bring art back into inner cities has a huge impact! It has created a way to give kids artist’s walls for a low cost and displays an extremely innovative business model. I really like the fact that this initiative uses the income stream to fund youth and arts projects in the city. “
“Usually real estate development within the non profit sector is not very innovative, but the way that this has been done is extremely innovative - and that in itself is very impressive!”
