Hi Josh,
I really enjoyed reading about how you're developing sustainable home and service projects. One aspect of your work that jumped out at me was the School-To-Work component. I'm curious to hear more about what green energy jobs are currently available in New Hampshire and how you plan to map out a program that will prepare youth not only to work in this industry but carve out new spaces for themselves in the marketplace.
Thanks,
Alexis

Hi Alexis - Thanks so much for you comment and question. The ideal Sustain-A-Raisers "graduate" would indeed pursue and be prepared for a green job in NH. I believe NH is keenly positioned to support these young green entrepreneurs, especially given Governor Lynch's recent partnership with UNH called the Green Launching Pad. Visit - http://www.greenlaunchingpad.org

From the website - "The concept of Green Launching Pad is to connect entrepreneurs and private industry with technical, scientific and business faculty and students at UNH and statewide to successfully launch new green businesses . . . . Projects funded under this program will specifically address commercialization of energy efficiency, energy conservation, renewable energy, and/or sustainable energy projects, programs, services, or techniques that will quickly lead to energy savings and emissions reductions and business and employment growth."

We plan to follow (and promote!) the progress of the Green Launching Pad and use Sustain-A-Raisers as a sort of pre-platform for learning basic project management skills while inspiring youth to pursue a career in the green job field. We hope to establish a formal partnership with the Green Launching Pad that will further define how we can prepare or provide incentive for high-school to participate in this program. We will work with the UNH Office of Sustainability in a similar fashion.

I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to respond or contact me to continue the important dialog. Thanks. Josh

I love the concept of the Sustain-A-Raisers. What a fantastic way to support the youth and promote community development! G.A.L.A is an excellent organization, chock full of amazing ideas that get put into action :)

Sustain-A-Raisers is an excellent program as it provides an opportunity for young people to connect with their communities and develop a sense of place. I fully agree that a major problem with society today is the general disconnect with our environmental space; the human habitat. Sustain-A-Raisers encourages deep consideration for that place.

Setting up The Rain Barrel leads to an awareness of the dynamics of a local watershed. A Clothes Line leads to the consideration of solar power and less demand from the energy grid. Composting and gardening will bring about an awareness of the problems with our current food production system.

Every project is outstanding in it's educational value. Maximizing our immediate resources should be a part of every school's science program. Sustain-A-Raisers bridges science with social responsibility by using economical projects to foster a healthy human habitat. Above all, it develops a strong sense of place in a time when many of us have become disconnected.

Keep up the great work Josh!
