Adding Economic Dimension to Protect the Traditional Culture
Hi friends, this to share with the forum that in Chitral, northern Pakistan, we have been undertaking innovative ideas to protect the traditional culture of the Kalash and Khow communities by adding economic incentives to create culture-based income earning opportunities for the artists and artisans and other related people. In the olden times when Chitral was a princedome, the local rulers protected the traditional culture by awarding landholdings to the people related to the traditional music in lieu of the service they rendered. But after that when we became part of the federation of Pakistan, there was created a vacuum whereby it became really difficult to carry forward the traditional music and to make it a source of income earning for the locals.
Here I would like to request you all friends, to please share with us experiences if someone in the forum is working for culture and to make it a source of income earning the way we are doing in Chitral, the remotest region of northern Pakistan. Thank you for you time and suggestions!
