I think Coastal Groves limited project is highly innovative and will impact the lives of a lot of people in Ghana in general and Central Region in particular.
According to available statistics, the Central Region is one of the poorest regions in the country. Also, information from the agricultural sector indicates that one of the major constraints in sector is marketing. To me this two issues have been well addressed by Coastal Groves.
Finally, I will suggest that this program should be replicated in citrus/orange producing areas in Ghana - especially the Eastern Region.
Yes I have read the entry from Stay Sweet Sugar. It will be an interesting partnership.
We are currently trying to introduce the juice in the Ghanaian market for a start. ater we will explore the tea concept but the market for orange tea may not justify investing in tea processing. Instead concentrate and make use of every peel; process into essential oil, more dried peels for tea or compost for our farmers to improve yield. The peels could be a whole business of its own.
On July 10, 2009 the judges reviewed the entries for the Changemakers “Cultivating Innovations: Solutions for Rural Communities” competition and would like to pass on the following feedback (listed below) for your entry. Thank you for applying and for your hard work in the field. We are excited to archive your entry to serve as a leading solution for the worldwide community of innovators. We wish you continued luck with your innovative, sustainable, and socially impactful initiatives.
All the best, The Changemakers Team
“Organic orange production seems a creative way to reduce poverty. The idea of finding markets through the internet is new and can work toward the sale of organic orange cultivation peels. Can you provide more information on the specifics of this initiative’s social impact? Specifically, I would like to know more about the benefit this initiative has for farmers.”
“The global juice market is growing dramatically and there is a market that this initiative could reach. I appreciate that in addition to reaching the international market, this initiative is successfully addressing an internal need. There is a need for oranges locally and internally. The appeal is reaching out to people who will not be blind to this issue anymore. In addition, I thought the list of donors was impressive.”

Thanks and keep it up - Coastal Groves Limited

I find this so interesting! Great work!
Quick question - is there a significant internal market for orange tea?
And did you see the entry from Stay Sweet Sugar? Could be an interesting partnership. Do you know of their work?
Thank you for your comment.
