I was amazed on this approach, this is a kind of inductive process of learning, right? if so this is a better way of educating the students, trained the teachers and farmers. You know what is good here is teachers and farmers are working together for the benefits of educating the next generation. Its really good idea. This idea i think can be highly recommendable to the Southeast Asian countries. Good Luck friend. Ruben
Yea, really, you know if I can just radiate this process, this will somehow change the way we develop both the youth and adult in the rural areas. Actually, the main purpose of this initiative is to let the rural farmers reconnect to their immideate environment through the effort of the youth, its buttoms up approach.
This Community- Based Participatory Action research must be given attention by the agencies concerned. This is a great project that will be of help to lessen the problem of our mother earth which is pollution. This is not hard to do we need only to open our minds and be willing to help. If everyone in this world will embrace this idea, we can have a better earth to live in the next years to come. Keep it up, Mr. Aligaen.
Thank you for your comment; actually this is supposedly the process we should have if we want a true and grounded development. Thank you I hope this will navigate through the world.
I hope to see or have a copy of the model soon.
Mr. Julito, by reading further about your project experienced, I am thinking of some integrative model in education. One thing I have observed in a defferent learning platforms especially in the rural areas, we need to come up with innovative integration modeling so that the ideas and experience of this project can be properly integrated in the process both in adult and youth to develop scientific and lifeskills.
Orientation to Biodiversity in the Farmland A. Learning Objective: To enable students and farmers to understand what biodiversity on farmland is, why it is important and why it is necessary to plan for its conservation. B. Materials Photos of Biodiversity (Supplied with Guide)Flip Chart PaperMarkersPaper Tape C. Time: 2 hours D. Procedure 1. What is the Biodiversity in the Farmland? To start the discussion with students, ask them “what is biodiversity?”. Students will have a number of answers. Summarize by telling them that most of their answers are correct! “Biodiversity means all the different kinds of living things, both large and small. Some are so small you cannot see them, like bacteria. Some are very large, like trees. It includes plants, animals, insects, fish, bacteria, algae and molds, everything that lives.” 2. Why is the biodiversity important to us? Ask them “Why is biodiversity important to us?” Students will normally talk about things they can eat and things they can sell. Maybe they will mention things they make from biodiversity. Tell them that biodiversity can have many important uses such as: · Food· Things which can be sold· Medicine· Things that farmers can make things from, like wood, certain kinds of leaves and straw· Social and religious uses, such as certain flowers for wedding and funerals, or trees which are respected in the religion· Making the area beautiful or pleasant, such as shade from trees, flowers, and green plants If teacher has photos of such biodiversity s/he can share them with Students. 3. Where is the Biodiversity? Then teacher can ask the question, “where can we find such biodiversity on the farm?”. Further, tell Students that there are probably some areas on the farm where the biodiversity is more than others. Teacher can then show a picture (diagram) of a “farmscape” which has a number of “high biodiversity” areas on it. One by one, teacher can show the pictures of these eight areas. The pictures should be given to students, one by one, as they are discussed. After Students see them and pass them to each other they can be placed on the wall in the room. The either areas are as follows: · Trees and Forest· Farm Ditches and Canals· Fields· Field borders/dikes· Homestead Areas· Roadsides· Wetlands and Marshes· Ponds Ask Students if each of these areas contain biodiversity which they said was important before: Food; Things which can be sold; Medicine; Things that farmers can make things from, like wood, certain kinds of leaves and straw; Social and religious uses, such as certain flowers for wedding and funerals, or trees which are respected in the religion; Making the area beautiful or pleasant, such as shade from trees, flowers, and green plants. Now, talk to Students about how the amount of biodiversity has changed over the past 10 or 20 years. Which type is less than before? Why? Which is more than before? Why? What will happen in another 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? Explain to Students than the main reason that biodiversity disappears is because there is no plant to protect it. If they don’t have a plan biodiversity will disappear. They don’t know how much they want, how much they need, where they want it and how it will be monitored. Having no plan is the same as having a plan to kill it all!! Let Students discuss this. F. Summary Now is the time that teacher can ask the group if they are interested in working together to find out more about the farmland biodiversity in our community and make a plan for conservation?. The plan should be for very specific types of biodiversity and not all of it. Making a plan requires time to meet many times. It requires a number of interested people in the community. If they are interested, they need to talk to other people in the community and agree on a time to begin working on the plan. G. Suggestion for Student works: (Project) Individual: An essay with the following information:Ø What are the biodiversity in our farmland?Ø What does community use the biodiversity for?Ø Where are the biodiversity?Ø What do you think about the farmland biodiversity?
