Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are networking new paths toward change:
Call it hope in a briefcase.
In the event of a major natural or man-made disaster, a region's or even an entire country's communications system can be knocked out. For first-response relief workers this means no ability to coordinate the crucial early efforts to save lives. But these days, the first wave of relief workers arrive with a 4lb briefcase that sets up in twenty minutes to become a fully operative, solar powered, internet-based command center, ready to transmit voice, data and pictures to the rest of the field team and the rest of the world.

HIAM - Health Infrastructure Accessibility Map
HIAM - "Health Infrastructure Accessibility Map" is a project aimed to create an interactive map of accessibility of the health system infrastructure for disabled people. It supposed to be available through web site and mobile applications. The main content of HIAM, an interactive map, is generated by the information received from people and institutions involved in the health system development. We believe that this project will have an impact on social, economic, educational areas.
It is a new application of existing tool - the accessibility map of Moscow universities that we developed earlier. The main distinction from any similar map is its flexibility and future evolution, namely: we create special criteria and methods to rank accessibility level of the health infrastructure institution and approaches for their computation; all of them - criteria and methods are variable in time and depend on received feedback.
Our Center has a great experience in the development of methodological fundamentals and implementation of complex rehabilitation models for disabled people to supply them with rehabilitation services, software and hardware to ensure equal abilities for this kind of citizens and facilities for their integration into society.
We've already managed to create the accessibility map of Moscow universities. The link is http://guimc.bmstu.ru/projects/access_map. We researched and developed special criteria to evaluate the accessibility rating of educational environment. And it's not only about physical access; the access to the information is also very important, as well as psychological accessibility, health saving technologies and other aspects. That experience will help to launch HIAM project.
Unfortunately the problem of accessibility of the health system infrastructure for disabled people is a complex one, we consider it to be of current importance for a long time not only in Russia, but also in many other countries. We are going to work with other NGOs and Ashoka Fellows globally to scale the project.

The succesful experience of the developing accessibility map of Moscow universities and its demand from the Ministry of Science and Education of the Russian Federation show that such projects are vital and have an important social impact. We believe that posting such problems for public display is the first and most importance step to solve it.
Social impact of our project will be clearly seen by means of the number of users and received feedback. And of course the content of the portal will develop qualitatively and quantitatively. We plan to track the dynamics of this growth.
One of the major purposes is to develop the project that can be scaled globally.
We expect that our project will give disabled people in Russia the whole picture of health infrastructure accessibility. So that every person knows where exactly he/she can get necessary medical services without any obstacle. And all that information is free for them.
The next stage is scaling to help disabled people in other countries.

The basic part - Accessible Map of Moscow Universities - was developed with financial support of the regional government. Based on it we are planing to develop this project with active participation of various partners and users of portal for the filling and improving of content and criteria-system. Since the portal is free to access, we can get financing within various sponsorship and grand programs, governmental service contracts and from other sources. We also could find an interest of commercial clinics and hospitals having the developed accessible infrastructure. They could inform their potential clients with disabilities about the accessible environment through our portal. That means those institutions which have the most developed conditions would want to promote and support the portal.

In Buenos Aires we have a public and free University with a six common subjects first year to almost all the careers, called "Ciclo Basico Comun" (C.B.C.) which have 65.000 new students each year and almost a half of them can't make it in one year. S.O.S. Estudiante is a virtual studying center, where students coming from High school can take online courses of the hardest subjects from the first university year. During a Skype call, the professor lectures from a Google docs the topics of the subject the student has chosen and solves doubts and questions.

What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
Our top three priorities in the next year are:
- To get visibility in the students audience and the university environment.
- To increase the number of involved students
- To build an education community
Need #1
Digital Marketing Strategy
Need #2
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
We need some help about how to introduce our project in the university world and the students audience. Specially in the first year of University, where students usually need more help. We know that Social media is the key to enter, but we don't know how we should start it. At this time we would like to increase "likers" in our Fan page on Facebook, we think that's a good option to introduce the project, but we don't know how to motivate the students to be in touch with us or how to find potential interested people about us.
At the same time, the positioning of our project on the web (outside social networks) it's a priority, but we would like to do it showing what's different in our idea and what kind of benefits could the students get.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
As a start up project, we need an overall support from American Express.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
At this moment, we are working hard to develop our idea the best way we can.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Sí
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Sí
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Sí
1.
More students completing the first year of university in one year.
2.
A big students community, studying through Facebook in a collaborative way.
3.
Fewer students giving up.
Students who have tried S.O.S. Estudiante have acquired a new vision of Skype or Facebook. They have realized that they can use these online tools not just for entertainment or communication, but as a learning tool.
While is too soon to talk about impacts, around 90% of the students who take lessons with S.O.S. Estudiante approve their exam. We believe that without any help, these students could never have completed C.B.C.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
Almost half of the total number of C.B.C. can't finish it in one year, and an important part of it, will give up in the next year. We think that S.O.S. Estudiante could help this critical students portion to complete this first year and keep studying.
We hope to build a community where students could share their doubts and members answer from different points of view. Also they could share their exam results to let the other members know about the final score. Thanks to this community, students would feel they are accompanied with others students during the whole learning process.

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
Infrastructure shapes our communities and our lives. In the 21st century it is economically and technically possible for engineering infrastructure projects to build thriving communities that enrich social wellbeing in balance with environment. However, ”the way it has always been done” often impedes innovation in the development on infrastructure, which hinders vibrant communities from being built.
The Engineering Leadership Council is creating a community of practice to advance the social and environmental outcomes of infrastructure projects through collaborating with multiple sectors, stakeholders, and levels of industry. We are engineers, working from inside industry organizations to move beyond 'the way it has always been done' to develop infrastructure for the 21st century.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
-Support and coach intrapreneurs throughout industry to enable their organizations to develop and engage with infrastructure projects that contribute to stronger, more resilient communities
-Build a strong partner base throughout multiple sectors of industry in Vancouver, BC, and Calgary, Alberta, growing the strength and size of the ELC network
-Improve financial sustainability through: expanded membership programs, scaled fund development, and increasing investment and sponsorship from partner corporations.
Need #1
Message & Brand Strategy
Need #2
Digital Marketing Strategy
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
We are really good at explaining to people with detailed industry knowledge what we are doing, and why it will change the future, and getting them excited and on board.
But to succeed sustainably, we need to build partnerships with with communities, with granting agencies, and others that don't have detailed industry knowledge.
To do this we need to communicate our programs in a fun and compelling way to a general audience.
1.
Impact: is this ultimately useful to the communities we want to see strengthened
2.
Systemic Change: Is this going to make the scale of change that is needed?
3.
Shared Values: Will the partnership persevere through challenges because we both care about the outcome?
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
This support will be used for the Engineering Leadership Council’s overall programming over 2013/2014. Interest has been expressed from engineers from a variety of sectors throughout industry in contributing to the ELC’s community of practice for infrastructure and the development of best practices for infrastructure development. The Engineering Leadership Council is well positioned to work with diverse stakeholders and utilize this interest to improve infrastructure projects and their delivery for community benefit and this support will greatly enable the success of our work.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
We have focused on the above area internally, but we lacked the capacity to create the quality of communication material needed and are seeking outside assistance.
We are very familiar with partnering with outside consultants in a professional context, however, we this would be our first opportunity to address this gap with an outside consultant.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Sí
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Sí
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Sí
1.
Build partnerships with organizations outside of industry but key to impact including granting organizations and communities
2.
Communicate our program plans concisely and compellingly to potential industry partners. 1:1 conversations won't scale.
3.
Support our volunteer intrpreneurs to more easily implement programs by communicating our programs more clearly to them.
Infrastructure planning design, construction, and maintenance is a complex process involving many stakeholders. To change this we have taken an innovative approach that engages with multiple organizations and actors throughout society. In our first year we have seen some very promising results that speak to the growing movement behind the ELC’s vision for infrastructure:
1) ELC Training being sponsored and delivered through APEGBC and APEGA. These associations are responsible for the licensing and governance of engineering practice in the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta
2) Intrapreneurs at three engineering consulting companies are actively changing the type of projects their companies engage with through ELC approaches, leading to stronger outcomes for communities
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
This professional support will be used scale the Engineering Leadership Council’s proven innovations in engineering practice, while also seizing opportunities to harvest the next set of innovations that will unlock further potential in our work.
The immediate outcomes we will work towards are:
-Increasing our ability to deliver ELC training to a diversity of organizations, partners, and markets.
- Expanding our network to include more intrapreneuers, while improving support for existing intrapreneuers
- Delivering high quality results in all ELC core activities to improve ELC’s pitch to key industrial partners
All outcomes contribute to our overall impact: the creation of an active community of infrastructure practice that enables strengthened communities.

Girl, unKnown. is an online/onsite interactive, goal-oriented social network, eventually to open Girl, unKnown Centers around the United States and elsewhere. Through girlunknown.com, women of all ages have the opportunity to use goal accountability programming that, like Match.com, links an individual to people and resources that match their interests, hobbies and career goals. Through Girl, unKnown Center, we would like to offer our members to connect, in-person with other members, give access to solid resources such as, computer labs, advisors, etc.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
The top three goals for Girl, unKnown in the next year are as follows:
1. Get girlunknown.com up and running with accountability, goal planning and tracking services.
2. Have strong community awareness through a great marketing campaign to grow our member base.
3. Get dialogue between older and younger women flowing, we really want to see a connection of generations take place and more cooperation between women.

Need #2
Performance Management
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
The biggest problem that we are having in developing Girl, unKnown is getting people to understand exactly what we are trying to do. We are taking a few concepts from established companies, marrying the ideas and putting a new spin on it.
We also need help in establishing our brand and structuring it against competition. While we are not copying anyone else's business, it may seem similaar at first to the public, but we are giving a more hands on approach, really getting people to get involved with their community, but also in themselves by helping women to set goals and giving the opportunity to help them reach them.
1.
Good ethical practices, no stealing, cheating, etc.
3.
Standing behind one's word.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Support from American Express will be focused on the organization as a whole. We would like to learn some of the ropes from an established firm as we begin to delve deeper into our business to help people succeed.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
I have not worked with an outside consultant before, it's been an idea that I have since college and I've been developing it for the last two years. I work with friends already to help them plan and establish goals, teach them how to use planners and make budgets. I decided to do it on a larger scale and Girl, unKnown was born. That is why I would absolutely love some guidance as to how to move forward.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Sí
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Sí
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Sí
1.
To send more confident, mature, resilient women into society to help themselves as well as others.
2.
Open dialogue between women of different generations, ethnicities, professional backgrounds etc.
3.
I want this business to continue and grow, I would like to see it blossom and give more opportunity to members around the world.
It has been a small scale impact thus far, I've been helping friends and family members and directing them to resources in the community that can help them further succeed. We have become more aware of organizations that we didnt previously know existed and I'm glad to pass the information forward and make more people aware of their existence.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
I would like for Girl, unKnown to reach a much wider audience and give more women the opportunity to follow the program to success. The website portion gives us the tools, but the in-person portion gives us the socialization piece thats being taken away by modern technology. The two entities coupled can really take Girl, unKnown. far and with the guidance of the employees at American Express, I see this being a very lucrative business. I want to see it go global one day, and open Girl, unKnown Centers around the world, connecting us all by the internet, with summits to bring us together every few years or so. There are so many possibilities and ideas for Girl, unKnown. but the first one is to get it off the ground.

Lawrence was working as a pediatric hematologist in Italy when he met Sadaf, a doctor from Pakistan who came to Florence to cure her daughter suffering from thalassemia. Lawrence couldn't understand why many families needed to be uprooted for a bone marrow transplant (BMT). He made it his mission to make a reliable and affordable cure (BMT) available locally.

Building Sustainable Health Systems Locally
According to the National Foundation for Transplants, a bone marrow transplants (BMT) costs between $360,000 and $800,000. One could then argue that finding a way to conduct BMTs in low resource settings for $10,000 each and with the same (or better) success rates is indeed innovative. However Cure2Children (C2C) doesn't consider this idea to be the most innovative element of our organization. We believe that true innovation can be better exemplified by how we make this cure available, rather than the thrifty innovation that lead to the cure itself. Through our model we improve tertiary care, locally, by filling the gap in the local health system so that BMT is made available locally, at affordable rates, and globally competitive standards.
At Cure2Children (C2C) we work with the existing health system by helping them to expand their local capacity to include tertiary care; specifically the prevention, treatment, and curing of highly prevalent childhood cancers and blood disorders, such as, leukemia, thalassemia, and sickle-cell anemia through processes such as HLA compatibility testing and bone marrow transplantation (BMT).
In addition, C2C links each local health center to a global network through its incredible online database. Initially, this database allows each patient in the new center to have a shadow physician from afar. However in the later stages of a centers development, this network has led to South-South partnerships!
This database also allows for the consolidation of global data, research, and thereby, improved and publishable treatment methods.
Unlike nonprofits providing immediate relief, at C2C we believe that to empower healthcare systems more attention has to be given to issues that are important but not urgent. Focusing on humanitarian emergencies is not enough and may not attract and retain the qualified local health professionals needed to improve the local healthcare system. At Cure2Children we work with global leaders at country level to design, test, and implement local solutions for on of the world’s biggest development challenges: That children have access to affordable and reliable care locally.
Also, unlike many medical nonprofit organization we do not cure children with our own medical team. We enable the local medical team to do so at globally competitive standards; and we have already seen the results!
At Cure2Children (C2C) our internal operating environment is remarkably international. Our core team comprises of 5 nationalities (Italian, French, Greek, American, and Indian) while our medical team comprises of 4 (Italian, British, Indian, and Pakistani). Our international appeal and medical credibility has enabled us to work with some of the world's top pediatric oncologists, hematologists, and medical centers. Through annual conferences that bring together physician from the ground and those from leading institutions, Cure2Children has been able to continue finding, applying, and publishing improved techniques for curing children with thalassemia, sickle-cell anemia, aplastic anemia, and leukemia locally, reliably, and affordably.
In addition to our global network, annual conference, database, and South-South partnerships, already mentioned, we remember to constantly innovate by involving patients' families, or parents who lost a child before treatment was available locally. Being in touch with these individuals reminds C2C that we must continue to innovate regardless of any challenge.
Such individuals have had the insight for innovations such as a family-support and prevention programs. In the former, C2C will provide lodging and work opportunities for families during the months when their children are undergoing treatment. These parent centers are funded through social business models. The latter will provide free and confidential genetic testing a requirement for family members of children receiving a cure.

Every year over half a million children develop cancer, leukemia or are born with life-threatening hereditary blood disorders. As a group, they represent the most common Non-Communicable Diseases in many emerging countries. Most are curable but only a minority of children have access to appropriate care. A lack of trained personnel and/or financial resources are these children's major barriers to a healthy life.
At C2C our goal is to ensure that local medical centers are available to offer an affordable and reliable cure to children in their community suffering from cancer and other blood disorders. We also contribute the development of worldwide evidence-based diagnostic and management standards that improve a cure for all children regardless of geographical and financial barriers.

Cure2Children improves global access to a safe and affordable cure from thalassemia, sickle-cell, and forms of pediatric cancer for patients who would otherwise die or lose everything trying to afford a cure.
Cure2Children promotes screening and prevention of these life-threatening hemoglobinopathies.
Cure2Children develops context-appropriate sustainable and scalable models to strengthen tertiary health care, improve cost-effectiveness, biomedical research and higher medical education in developing countries.
It does this, in part, by helping health centers in high burden areas offer an affordable and reliable cure locally. Our model is that of: Target -> Understand -> Teach -> Transfer.
¿Cuál es tu visión y objetivos generales?
Our aim is that every child, whether suffering from leukemia, cancer, thalassemia, or sickle cell disease, has the chance for an affordable and reliable cure, locally.
Our mission is (1) to ensure that local medical centers are able to offer an affordable and reliable cure to children in their community suffering from cancer and other blood disorders; and (2) to contribute to the development of worldwide evidence-based diagnostic and management standards that improve a cure for all children with cancer regardless of geographical, financial and cultural barriers.
As part of our vision, each individual center will be linked to a global network allowing for consolidated research and for anyone anywhere in the world to find an affordable cure as close to home as possible.
¿Cuál es tu propuesta de valor?
Cure2Children assists local medical systems in implementing and sustaining tertiary care procedures (such as bone marrow transplantation) that cure children with life-threatening disorders. These resulting medical units are able to offer a reliable cure that is not only affordable for the local population but is globally competitive.
Children with uncured blood disorders (such as thalassemia) either die, usually before the age of 10, or require expensive lifelong treatment, such as monthly blood transfusions. Curing children with these disorders is not only a life changing procedure for the family of the child, but also a savvy investment on the part of the local government. Cured children no longer need treatment and are able to become contributing members of society.
The customers of our core business are both local medical centers and governments in areas highly populated with genetic blood disorders and cases of childhood cancer but no cure offered locally.
Cure2Children works directly with local medical centers to help them set-up self sustainable tertiary care centers that meet the local community's need for tertiary care.
Cure2Children also works directly with governments and ministries of health to fill the gap in their delivery of care and cure for children with sickle-cell anemia, thalassemia, leukemia, neuroblastoma and other non communicable diseases.
Customers of our peripheral services are parents of children affected. We have provided loans for parent groups looking to start social business style houses and stores.
¿Qué enfoques utilizas para llegar a ellos?
Initially, Cure2Children's (C2C) Medical Team proactively sought out centers in high-burden areas to assist them in meeting local need for treatment. However, as the success of C2C's established (and now autonomous) centers became known, C2C has been on the receiving end of a market pull. Currently, Cure2Children has received requests from medical centers and ministries of health in Iraq, Zambia, Vietnam, India (Bangalore), Afghanistan , and SriLanka to help them establish self-sustainable tertiary care units that cure children with cancer and genetic blood disorders at an affordable cost and globally competitive standards of care.
While some of the above are able to provide their own start-up funds, many are not. Funds are C2C's limiting factor for meeting all of the above requests.
¿Cuáles son tus actividades principales?
Cure2Children's primary activity is that of assisting health centers open bone marrow transplantation (BMT) units to cure children suffering from forms of cancer and genetic blood disorders at locally affordable rates and with globally competitive results.
Our model is that of: Target -> Understand -> Teach -> Transfer -> Success
'Teach' involves training the selected local professionals to sustain the BMT unit. C2C's medical team spends 2 week rotations for more than 3 months ensuring that the local team is able to conduct the procedure and manage the center autonomously. When it is time to begin curing patients, the C2C medical team leads local staff through the 1st BMT, assists with the second, and steps back to observe as local staff conducts the 3rd.
¿Quiénes son tus pares y competidores? ¿Qué problemas podrían plantear esos jugadores para tu éxito o crecimiento?
At Cure2Children, our peers are other professionals and individuals interested and involved in increasing global access to cures for children with blood disorders and cancer.
Often times, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can see other NGOs as their competitors. This is no different for Cure2Children. Other NGOs applying to similar funding sources and resources are both our programmatic allies and our financial competitors. Other competitors include local private institutions providing bone marrow transplantation. While it might be strange to consider a neighboring hospital offering a BMT for $25-40,000 the competitor of a clinic offering the same for $10,000 with the same success rates. However, this is at times the case until the new center has time to prove its reliability.
At present, Cure2Children's (C2C) biggest challenge is fundraising for the organization itself.
C2C helps local governments and/or health centers create sustainable bone marrow transplant units that offer a reliable and affordable cure. Due to our growing success rates and network we are being solicited by countries, such as Iraq, that can afford to pay for our services. However for many countries that cannot, C2C must provide the start-up capital. As an organization we do not have trouble finding local funding for the particular health center, but we do have trouble finding enough funds to sustain our own internal nonprofit operations.
Describe brevemente tu estrategia de crecimiento futura
After C2C has pulled-out, its BMT units have gone on to sustain their operations and continue to offer a reliable cure to children, locally. Our goal, at the moment, is to scale this model to other continents such as Africa, where rates of sickle-cell anemia are very high.
Our goal is also to begin using innovative techniques to reliably cure children through BMT with a semi-compatible donor.
We have tested it and it works! Our first two BMT centers were in India and in Pakistan. Both centers are now financially independent, operating on their own, and curing children at a subsidized or affordable charge, with a success rate of 97%! These centers conducted over 100 BMT independently. C2C also has the technological infrastructure and personnel needed to support a large scale network.
¿Cuáles son tus objetivos centrales de crecimiento?
C2C's key objectives for growth are:
(1) to assist in the development of 15 bone marrow transplant centers by 2015, all part of a global network;
(2) to conduct BMTs from mother to child in 2013; and
(3) to create global standards for addressing noncommunicable diseases locally and through socially responsible means.
Cure2Children will see a milestone when it has opened a self-sustainable bone marrow transplant unit in: Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa; decreasing the distance that anyone should have to travel to be cured. We plan to open a center in Africa before the end of 2014; and to assist in the development of 15 independent bone marrow transplant centers globally by 2015, all of which will be part of a global network of centers.
Cure2Children also plans to submit at least one peer-reviewed publication annually, sharing findings from its database on improved standards of care, for example, to reduce rejection or post-BMT infection in low-resource settings, etc.
The best way to illustrate Cure2Children's (C2C) impact to date is to use two of our centers as an example, one old and one new.
NEW
According to the Thalassemia Society of India, children suffering from thalassemia require a blood transfusion every month of their lives in addition to treatment for iron overload in order to survive. Due to geographical or financial barriers, for many this expensive life-long treatment is not an option.
Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) offers a complete cure for many. Yet, in Rajasthan, India, with its 70 million inhabitants and high rates of thalassemia, no bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit was in existence. Therefore, Cure2Children worked with a local hospital to make a safe, reliable, affordable, and globally competitive cure available.
Ownership of the BMT unit was handed-off entirely to local staff in February of 2012. Since then the team of this unit has gone on to conduct over 10 successful transplants in one year (for a success rate of 90%, 1 lost high-risk patient).
Additionally, in January of 2013 the regional government of Rajasthan has acknowledged the BMT unit as part of the national health system and is covering the cost of each and ever needed BMT hence forth for needy families with an income <$5,000.
OLD
Thalassemia is estimated affect 3-8% of Pakistan's 177 million people. For this reason, Pakistan was one of C2C's first partners in 2007. Its C2C established BMT unit has been running through local ownership since 2008, and has continued on to conduct close to 100 BMTs without assistance from C2C.
We measure our quantitative impact by recording:
- the number of self sustainable bone marrow transplant units established
- the number of BMTs conducted
- the number of family members screened for a thalassemia trait
- the number of children treated
However it is important to remember that the social impact is more than just a child's life saved through bone marrow transplantation. Due to the fact that Cure2Children helps an affordable and reliable cure be available locally, families no longer need to sell their homes and spend all their money to save the life of their child. Additionally, their child, which many have otherwise died, can now be a productive member of society.
Cure2Chidren's model for assisting local medical centers and ministries of health in establishing tertiary care centers offering affordable, reliable, and globally competitive care can be (and is being) applied in diverse countries and continents.
Due to the amount of sickle-cell anemia in many African countries, Cure2Children would like to expand there. C2C has already begun discussions with the Zambian Ministry of Health for a project to ameliorate treatment for sickle-cell disease, making a cure available, as well as conducting research for the future.
At present this model has been replicated in Asia and Eastern Europe.

Cure2Children's model allows local tertiary care units to offer and perform bone marrow transplants (BMT) for about $10,000 each. However, revenues from the transplants themselves is usually not the units only source of income.
Cure2Childrens model requires each local center (a.k.a.: BMT unit or tertiary care unit) to be self sustainable within 2 years. For some units, this means cross subsidizing. Cross subsidizing can mean that the unit is absorbed under the financial umbrella of a larger hospital, or that the unit's tertiary care services themselves allow for internal cross subsidization. For most centers, however, self sustainability means being recognized by the regional or national government as a qualified (and often the only) BMT unit and receiving government funding. For example, C2C's BMT unit in Jaipur, India is now sponsored by the regional government of Rajasthan, which is also paying for each and every BMT. While C2C's BMT unit in Islamabad, Pakistan is being sponsored by the Pakistani-Italian Debt for Development Swap Agreement and is now being taken over by the Pakistani government.
Some customers are able to cover Cure2Children's expenses, such as Iraq's Ministry of Health. However most require Cure2Children the nonprofit organization to provide start-up capital for at least one year. This start-up capital covers C2C expenses, the unit's equipment, medicines, staff salaries, and training. To obtain these funds Cure2Children uses diversified fundraising, from, grant applications (like this one) to individual or corporate donation solicitation.

Initial start-up capital is provided by the Cure2Children Foundation. Established units are able to provide bone marrow transplantation and accompanying treatments (such as pre-transplant evaluation and preparation) to cure children with blood disorders and certain forms of cancer for a cost and a revenue of $10,000 each.
Additional revenue are also made through service agreement with the government. It is cheaper to cure a child with thalassemia than to treat a child with thalassemia for the rest of his/her life, not to mention the opportunity cost/lost GDP from the child that could have been cured, working, and contributing to market growth. For this reason government often subsidize the bone marrow transplants and related costs.

The Cure2Children Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 in the United States, a registered non-for-profit organization in Italy, and a registered charitable trust in the UK. These bodies enable C2C to conduct fundraising campaigns internationally.
At present C2C's revenue has come, largely, from foundations (such as the Umberto Veronesi Foundation), celebrity gala events, and individuals (a network of families that have lost children to cancer and blood disorders).
For the future C2C plans to incorporate more grants from diversified sources as well as corporate donations, in addition to continuing expanding its individual donor base.

The Cure2Children Foundation works in areas with high prevalence rates of blood disorders such as thalasemia and sickle-cell anemia, and which don't currently have the capacity/know how to offer a cure. To ensure that C2C can make the largest impact and open as many needed centers as possible, it has begun selling its services to countries that can afford to pay for it, such a Iraq. Selling its services to countries that need it and can pay for it, creates the same social value in that area (as all C2C units must offer low-cost, reliable, and globally competitive cures), and it also allows C2C to offer its services for free to countries with the same burden but without the ability to pay, such as SriLanka.
The Cure2Children Foundation continues to struggle for funds to cover its organizational costs. At the same time Cure2Children has been extremely successful in ensuring that each of its partner centers has a sustainable and locally appropriate revenue generation scheme, mixed between direct sale to patients and long-term service agreements with government and international organizations.
Cure2Children would benefit from the help of consultants to learn about incorporating its organizational costs in its program costs, which could then also be covered (at least in part) by the revenues of local centers.

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
Seedstock takes an innovative approach to the problem: "How do we keep money ciruclating in the community and build a more resilient local economy in today's highly globalised and mobile world?"
We do this by going beyond the mere exortation to "buy local", and instead give people a way to "buy community" by using community currency as partial payment for good and services at participating local businesses. Businesses then recirculate Seedstock Communty Currency into their communities as well, keeping the money going 'round and generating unprecedented customer loyalty to local, community-minded businesses.
Furthermore, because businesses kick off the cycle by making a Seedstock gift to a local cause, Seedstock helps communities fund the things that are important to them.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
1. Grow the number and diversity of participating businesses to increase the attractiveness and usefulness of Seedstock, and to encourage trading among different kinds of businesses as well.
2. Grow the number of community members who purchase Seedstock from their favourite local causes on a regular basis.
3. Create a strong organisational structure that will enable us to sustain and enhance the services we offer to the community.
Need #1
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Need #2
Message & Brand Strategy
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
Although the benefits (both individual and to society) of participating in and using Seedstock are demonstrably far superior to other methods that businesses typically use to acquire and retain customers (coupons, discounts, loyaly points, etc), the concept of "community currency" is still very novel to most, so there is still a high need to educate potential participants. We need effective strategies for reaching out to and educating large numbers of businesses all at once.
Similarly, we need strategies for encouraging members of the public to make a habit of buying Seedstock from local causes, then spending it at local businesses.
1.
Collaborative: working together to further a common goal
2.
Mutual: partners show mutual respect, reciprocity and generosity
3.
Openness: the partnership takes place in a spirit of openness and sharing with each other and the community.

A more vibrant, resilient and interconnected local economy in communities with widespread usage of Seedstock Community Currency.
2.
The creation of a powerful new tool for community-based fundraising and even business financing.
3.
Enhanced opportunities for economic participation and right livelihood
6 weeks after launching our pilot, Seedstock Community Currency has the participation of 30 businesses and growing, has generated over $ 15,000 in Seedstock donations to local non-profits, and over 3000 ss$ has been exchanged for $Cdn with members of the public. Local causes have already raised money they would not have otherwise, with minimal effort on their part, and local businesses have already generated sales from Seedstock. The model has been shown to work, and now only needs to be scaled up.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
We hope that the support of American Express can help us acquire a critical mass of Seedstock participants and users ("the early adopters") that will fuel further growth of the user base largely by word-of-mouth advertising and referrals. In the long term, we do not see why every independent, locally-owned business in the Lower Mainland would not want to be involved. This could one day result in Seedstock worth several hundred million dollars circulating in our communities each year, generating tens of millions in funding for local causes, projects and social enterprises. Seedstock's objective is to focus on projects that will leave a lasting impact for a more resilient local economy, including investments in our local food system and in arts and cultural infrastructure.

We have received close to 500 loan applications; after applying our credit score process we approved and disbursed 80 loans (16%). Most of our borrowers were paying an average interest rate of 100% annually, with kubo they are paying between 32 and 52%. We have provided personalized financial education to our borrowers; several of them began to understand that they are subjects of lower rates if they have a good credit history and the need to create a plan to get out of over indebtedness. Many feel empowered of telling the story of their business in our internet platform.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
We want to position our brand and improve our social marketing. We want to learn ways to better target our potential clients, scale our operation and significantly reduce our customer acquisition costs.

¿Qué apoyo interno has tenido para tu proyecto? Qué tipos de retrocesos has sufrido?

We share the passion to redefine and revolutionise development work through social entrepreneurial methods that lets the people define the way they can impact society.
We are a Finnish and German team with experience in international work and in community innovation projects.
We are MA candidates at the Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, and eager to use the university's outreach for co-designing the future changemakers in global societies.
We have been displaying intrapreneurial behaviour since the beginning of our studying and working life by initiating projects outside of the curriculum. We think acquired skill and learnt knowledge should be put into practice, preferably towards solving wicked problems.
We founded our partnership by realising that the potential of this university and NGOs we work with is not utilised. And we believe that people in communities can have a strong societal impact themselves. So we combined our professional expertise with our field experience of working with NGOs as well as our academic backgrounds to start this initiative within a broader framework that we are hoping to reshape.

Idea (estás listo para lanzarla)
Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
We are trying to solve the gap that exists between innovative thinkers and investors. The digital revolution has reached the Arab world but has not had a chance to be truly established as a pool of social venture opportunities. We recognise the potential and want to build a network facilitates the creation of new sustainable businesses in a modern, young and growing society.
As of now there is no such network or digital platform that brings people in the Arab world together so they can co-create their future. This we aim to change through intercultural collaboration and community innovation in a local hackerspace.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Through an exchange of young Finnish and Lebanese students, entrepreneurs, designers and activists we are aiming to facilitate community innovation around the emerging hackerspaces in Beirut, Lebanon. The idea is to observe, think, create and make for societal change. The final deliverable will be based around a knowledge sharing digital platform in the Arab context, that was co-created and co-designed by the European and Arab participants. This platform will be used to promote emerging social ventures in the region. Anybody with a vision for the development of their society will get the chance to connect with investors and potential partners, pitch ideas, access resources and brainstorm around digital tools for societal impact.
The project will include 2 parts:
1) A student exchange between Finland and Lebanon.
2) A business incubator that will be created and maintained by local communities and a growing network of social entrepreneurs.
We are proposing a new way of doing development work. Instead of bringing in foreign experts to finance and control the way a society is shaped we would like to enable citizens with new ideas that first of all benefit smaller communities by giving them access to a network of fellow active citizens and small-scale investors so that ideas can be taken off the ground sensibly in a sustainable manner. No such network currently exists in the Arab world but is certainly wished for.
Our initiative works with the first ever hackerspace in Beirut. Finnish students will work together with the existing community and come up with product service systems that can be developed in social business models to be pitched to investors. This could for example be a new tool to regulate energy consumption in the household, one of the major urban challenges that is surrounded by a lot of exploiting activities. We will collaborate with local entrepreneurs and other activists to form a strong proposal and receive investments. Around the first proposals that emerge from the student exchange we will base a network for future social venture incubation. This platform will be developed with the digital community and Arab entrepreneurs so that it is relevant for the Arab markets and takes into consideration the various cultural contexts. It will allow the shaping of training and workshop groups for self-teaching, impact investments through various partners, collaboration on design pitches, testing sessions organised at local labs or with local and remote volunteers etc.
In the local Beirut entrepreneurial hub we will kickstart a regular event that links the digital spaces with the existing Entrepreneurs' Brunch so that contemporary social ventures gain the visibility they deserve.
The first proposals will be exhibited both in Beirut and Helsinki and serve as marketing material for the future activities on the platform.
So far there is no competitor that directly links the open source maker culture to entrepreneurial activities on the ground.
However one partner is GEMSI, an initiative that helps kickstart the founding of those hackerspaces themselves in different Arab countries. Another competitor, who could easily be a peer, is the MIT Pan Arab Forum that created a social entrepreneurship workshop at the beforementioned hub, although with no focus on the media used. Western platforms like Kickstarter and Instructables are known and used but they do not address those specific markets.
Besides Lamba Labs, the local partner, another peer is the MENA Design Research Center that focuses on design research for social impact and works a lot with communities on sustainable solutions for societal issues.

When I was first working with the MENA Design Research Center in Lebanon, I quickly realised the potential that fast networking has in the country. People act on passion and common understanding of society's needs, something that is specific to the region and its people thanks to a history that often left them behind in decision-making processes.
The second time I worked in Beirut with the hackerspace I saw the common interest and immediate excitement about access to the digital tools but at the same the unawareness of tangible opportunities that these offer.
By networking with many other activists and entrepreneurs as well as participating in many initiatives my belief in the country's potential has been strengthened. The eagerness of partners to join us keeps us motivated to make this happen in the near future as we are building a sustainable model for realisation.
As our solution is still in the pitching stage it has not made a tangible impact. However it brought on board many people that are now devoting time to realising this idea, which certainly is an impact in terms of the mindset of people. We managed to bring the Arab societies into academic discussions at Aalto, which is something that has not happened before. Faculty and students from all levels are now eager to learn more and participate. We are also creating stronger networks between both European and Lebanese stakeholders.
In one year the student exchange will take place that will lead to the creation of the platform, an exhibition of the proposals as well as an evaluation phase.
The incubation methodology will have been developed and will then be tested and optimised with various trials so that in three years time the business model can have reached sustainability and will be maintained locally. We are looking at slowly growing ventures to ensure strong capacity building and avoid fast collapse. While we will provide tutoring we will mainly focus on adapting the model for other markets such as Iraq, Iran and Egypt, where we also have partners.
If approved by the partner universities, the student exchange will become mutual and continue yearly, thus supporting the incubation space in Lebanon.
There still is the fright that many investors share when it comes to investing in the Arab markets. At the same time we have to fight common definitions of development work as we are proposing an innovative approach. We also know that cogs are moving slowly in academia so that this is struggle when trying to establish a new course. It also does not help that we are still young graduates with limited entrepreneurial expertise.
However we have a strong pitch and many experienced partners from various fields that support every application.
We have professional expertise and a good cultural understanding so that we can communicate the importance of this project and the relevance of the location.
We already received a small travel grant for networking in Lebanon in February, which helps.
The benefits can be measured in various ways.
One will be the successful emergence of new, partly profitable business in Lebanon that utilise digital means. Within a few years first studies will confirm the impact those social ventures create on society.
The other value is for the academia as it opens up a new educational market for Finland and potentially other European partners.
We are making use of Aalto's support for new courses and projects that are run with at least two different departments. Through that we are able to build an academic support system. At the same time we are shifting people's focuses onto this project so that they do not have to spend much additional time but rather adjust the time they invest into initiatives anyways. This is support by the research opportunities the project provides. At the same time we are making use of existing networks on all scales such as the Cumulus for the overall university, the research labs for smaller focuses, the local and remote centers as well as EU foundations that support our concept stage with small travel grants.
We are using our access to various services within Aalto to support this initiative.
In the long term there will be various ways of funding this initiative.
While the Lebanese partner institutions will provide a working space, materials and tutoring as well as exhibition support, the Finnish institution, Aalto University, will provide academic support such as official accreditation, travel grants, provision of working rooms and seminar building.
The funding for the implementation of the business proposals after the first project phase will be taken on by local investors in Beirut, Lebanon. Thanks to this plan, the funding required is rather minimal as it is required in increments rather than a lump sum and much of the funding is provided through the sponsoring of facilities, materials and human resources.
Within Aalto we have partnerships with several departments and research groups such as the NODUS sustainable design research group, the ePedagogy department, the Media Lab, the Aalto Global Impact development initiative, the Executive Education and the Creative Sustainability programme.
Outside of Aalto we have partnerships with the MENA Design Research Center, the Lamba Labs hackerspace, the Lebanese American University and the GEMSI initiative.
¿Qué apoyo interno has tenido para tu proyecto? Qué tipos de retrocesos has sufrido?
So far we have received mainly academic and structural support from within Aalto. So far there have not been many push-backs as we are just starting the initiative. We have just applied for course funding, which we will be informed of at the end of this month.
There has only been one push-back, which is timing as already many projects and courses have been confirmed for the coming 18 months, which leaves us behind a little. On the other hand we have promising partnerships.
While the Entire ICT tools has already been developed and had been field tested and is being used in smaller projects , it is not a open tool as of now which can be just plugged to any project based requirement. The Idea is to make this ICT tool user friendly so that any external interface is not required to use the same.

Youth unemployment happens to be my main area of focus. In every country around the world today, the issue of youth unemployment is very much addressed, but unfortunately, its more in a theoretical sense rather than the practical sense. Politicians make this their top priority so as to get into power, but yet accomplish nothing while in power. The world can only be a better place if youths are given the chance to express themselves in a professional way, for they constitute basically the work force of every country globally.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
The main solution will be to acquire sufficient skills so as to better manage the project and its finances for a professional knowledge and communication skills, I believe is key to a successful business, and lets not forget that in so many cases where the money is available but without no sense of direction, communication skills, planning and technical know-how, the money could be wasted.
To acquire sufficient and adequate invaluable soft skills so as to ameliorate my interpersonal, communicative and team work skills which will facilitate the setting up of more and more projects for the good of all.
For every business to be very successful, a professional communication must always exist between the staffs and board members. This can only happen when the subjects involved are very well trained and orientated. Another issue is that of finance which serves like a bullet in a gun. Without a solid financial background, no business whatsoever can be established. Money moves the train while the knowledge serves as the pilot.

Ever since this project was established from our little professional skills, at least three bigger projects have participated in the pilot and have been presented on an existing online platform(Facebook) and have been monitored real time online. Online communities have been founded around these three projects that are made up by people/organisations/companies directly supporting or funding the projects and by people/organisations/companies that are directly being supported by the projects. The project data of these online projects is tagged and searchable so it can be used for learning by others. Also, a final lessons learnt document is developed, describing the challenges encountered by the organisations that have piloted their projects on the online platform, describing the requirements of an online platform that can deliver on the goals listed above, and recommending ways forwards.

This project however has enabled us to learn how to better create employment opportunities that can better the lives, and businesses of others, most especially the youths which happens to be our main group of focus. From our example, we make people understand that it's not the obligation for the government to grant employment for all, but it's every individual's responsibility to create employment opportunities that could be of benefit to others. I am very much available and willing to lend a helping hand whenever need be.

When I noticed back in my home country that so many young people like myself had so many ideas but with no medium to expose them, I then decided to put in place a medium of exchange of ideas. Its over a year and a half ever since my idea came to life, back then in Cameroon. For me, its not the responsibility of the government to create job opportunities for all, but its the responsibility of all to create opportunities that can be of help to others. Just like the late American president John F Kennedy said; "Ask not what your government has done for you, but rather ask what you have done for your government". I have looked through a variety of different culture, communities, and societies to sort out what aids in humanities success and what leads to its failure. I have visionary skills, intuitive prowess, facilitative capacity, the willingness to delegate when necessary, and the desire to collaborate with others on projects that cultivate goodwill, joy, and passionate service in the world. I see that individuals who do their own inner work can be relied upon to then offer more wholesome and holistic approaches to the current net of crises that we as a species face.

Idea (estás listo para lanzarla)
Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
There are many problems that need to be addressed both socially and environmentally. I see my idea as a tool that can aid in the addressing of these needs in a more efficient, cost effective, and engaging way that also serves as a great means to build local and global grass roots community.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Thriving World is a social internet platform that gives users(individuals, communities, schools, institutions, governments, etc.) opportunities to get needs met & skills/services/gifts/talents to be shared with others. Think of it as a cross between freecycle/ebay/craigslist/prosper/facebook within a gift economy. Each user will create a profile, filling out an in depth questionnaire via software that fields their needs (from the basic Products level - I need a crib for my son to the Service level - I need consulting help building my organization to the Relational level - I need some emotional support - to the Regional level - our local area needs food shelter assistance) and then it fields their skills, gifts, and talents to be share with others. Here's the thing, everyone has something that is of value to give to the world and everyone has needs. Right now the way that our system distributes the massive amount of resources that we have as a species and within the planet is poor.
Individuals can be aided in clarifying what their needs and skills/talents/gifts are, In some cases Thriving World gives insight to individuals about gifts & skills that they aren't even aware that they had or that others were in need of. The social service platform acts as a linking service provider giving each user the ability to be in contact with those who need their gifts & those have have gifts that they need. Each exchange can be via trade/donation/cash/credit/or gift.
A person comes to the site, goes through the profilin software system, an inventory of their current needs is assessed: Joe Fella, needs his toilet fixed, a babysitter on weds. nights, his PC fixed, a massage, and consulting on his next business proposal. His gifts are then assessed: He has the ability to listen attentively, he can fix old mercedes, he loves to read stories to children, he has traveled the orient extensively, and he knows how to cook mandarin cuisine. Then the website offers him lists of people that have already been entered into the system that have similar needs that have gotten those met but different users, showing the exchange history (so he can have ideas of how to meet his needs) as well as users that are currently available to offer their gifts for his needs. Then his gifts are cataloged and then offered to users that have need for his gifts. Then when he finds an exchange that is fitting for his needs or someone contacts him about accessing one of his gifts he has the option of choosing to asking for a donation from the user as a gift, paying cash/paypal/credit card, trading for one of his gifts, giving the exchange credit to the thriving world organization(or other charitable organizations and users) or having the credit added to his store of credit to use in other interactions. The same situation applies to when a user wants to exchange around his gifts. Then users leave comments & feedback about how the exchange went, benefited them, and encourage relationship building. These exchanges improve lives and communities in the process.
Sacred Economics or gift economy is the new rising market economy. The Thriving World social net platform provides a concrete way to help transition to the gift economy model within the current existing models of exchange. Similar projects are City2.0 at http://www.thecity2.org/ and http://www.tedprize.org/. This world is overflowing with abundance. Human beings are affluent in so many ways. The main problem has always been the distribution of and relationship to that abundance. Zuckerberg says Facebook and other forces on the Internet now create sufficient transparency for gift economies to operate at a large scale. “When there’s more openness, with everyone being able to express their opinion very quickly, more of the economy starts to operate like a gift economy."

I had a dream 10 years ago of a website that people would come to that would help them identify their needs/gifts & then link them to others so those needs can be met & the gifts can be given. It is a deeply meaningful experience to feel your gift has been given and needs are met. I realized that needs are meant to be met & the reason we have gifts is to give them. However sometimes we don't have the resources to realize what those needs and gifts are or the help to get them met or distribute the gifts to those who need them. Now with the development of new technology it is easier to create the network needed to address the large issues of basic survival needs and higher levels of needs (see Maslow's hierarchy of needs). I see Thriving World as a platform that aids humanity in a more efficient & effective means to assess & access our resources, utilizing them wisely, and actualizing those different types of needs which in turns rises the degree of meaning and happiness on the planet.
I have not yet created the software program that fields the data for the users. Once I have this created then I can create the service and get the website running. I need the financial support and social recognition so I can gather the team and resources to put the idea into form. Thriving world can grow exponentially just as craigslist, facebook, freecycle, and ebay have.
If I get funding and recognition, the sky is the limit.
Finding the right team members, getting the funding and social recognition to put the idea into form. I plan to overcome them by entering my idea here and other similar project that can give it funding and resources.

The project would be funded by the users. One of the options that each exchange has is to offer the gift or credit to Thriving World to cover its costs.

PULSE Lab – Leveraging a “Big Business” skills-based volunteering initiative to create a strategic model for intrapreneurship which builds human capital and delivers innovation to the global community.

GSK is committed to supporting the global community in the not-for-profit arena through the PULSE Volunteer Partnership. All 4 members of the core team (Kevin, Graham, Michelle & Ann) did PULSE assignments in the UK, Kenya, Ghana, & South Africa in 2010. We have a united mission to explore how GSK can harness its reputation for “quality” & “focus on scientific excellence” to magnify the efforts of external organisations to bring innovative solutions for healthcare in the developing world.
Alongside our full-time scientist roles we imagined how impactful & empowering PULSE Lab could be, as a hub to incubate & leverage the delivery of innovative ideas conceived by PULSE alumni & other employees from across the entire GSK corporation (over 100,000 staff).
Scientific roles in GSK demand tenacity & innovative thinking, all directed towards helping people do more, feel better & live longer. Our experiences living & working in the developing world added a richer understanding of global development needs, coupled with passion & energy to strive towards making a real difference. To thrive during our PULSE assignments, we demonstrated self-confidence, excellent problem solving skills & sensitive cross-cultural communications.Back in GSK we have spent over 18 m networking widely across the entire enterprise to inspire others with our PULSE Lab vision. We have bonded as a cross-functional matrix team, learned from our mistakes & grown as leaders. Intrinsically we have resilience to bounce-back in the face of obstacles & work harder towards our goal

GSK gives staff the opportunity to volunteer for 1 day a year in their local community. The GSK PULSE Volunteer Partnership is a skills-based initiative that matches motivated employees to a non-profit organisation, full-time, for 3 or 6 months. We know, from personal experience, that volunteers return to their business area with innovative ideas about how GSK could do more to help the global community but lack a structure or network to test & support delivery of these intrapreneurial ideas.
Because this structure didn’t exist for us we decided to invent it! We wanted a novel strategic model of intrapreneurship to unlock the silo-thinking which often exists in big business & unleash the passions of people to deliver innovative, high quality solutions for issues in the developing world
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
PULSE Lab builds on GSK’s corporate responsibility strategy and its volunteer programme.
PULSE Lab is an enduring, but virtual, hub for returning volunteers, the GSK corporation and external partners who can see opportunities for partnership and innovation to benefit the developing world. It provides a platform for ideas to be heard, a forum for incubation and evaluation together with a proven pathway illuminating the route to delivery.
Looking to the future, beyond the pilot phase, the success of PULSE Lab will be assessed by the commercial and/or social value of the projects delivered. For intrapreneurs, working on PULSE Lab projects alongside their day-job, they learn to be highly successful networkers and leaders, collaborating across silos to harness the breadth and depth of GSK intellectual, human and financial capital.
PULSE Lab
Creates a bridge between GSK, external partners & those in the developing world enabling delivery of sustainable not-for-profit healthcare solutions.
Is seen as innovative from the perspective of large funding bodies, e.g., The Wellcome Trust, “providing a missing Portal into all areas of big Pharma outside of the traditional commercial routes”.
Creates a community for volunteers to collaborate across functional silos to deliver intrapreneurial ideas from GSK
In 2011, 5 PULSE volunteers, independently, identified opportunities for GSK staff to help magnify the existing efforts of multiple NGO’s by leveraging the scientific skills & competencies of staff at GSK. Individually none of these ideas could be supported by their managers because they were not aligned with departmental goals & strategies.
We invented PULSE Lab & spent 6 months refining the design talking to as many people as possible. This included identifying a sponsor in the CEO Office to launch the PULSE Lab process as a “call to action” seeking innovative, game-changing ideas where GSK could do more to help the global community.
Collating the ideas we recognised that the 5 ideas mentioned above could be combined to create a more impactful micro volunteering model (ie short term volunteering done alongside a persons day jobs utilizing their professional skills & networks).
This was presented to a Dragons Den panel of senior managers drawn from multiple businesses across the GSK Enterprise. The Panel were really enthusiastic about the concept & made resources available to refine the details of the micro-volunteering model & then implement it across the organisation.
As a result of PULSE Lab individual ideas from a disparate group of volunteers were given a voice & heard, unfiltered by departmental goals.
In the future, we anticipate all staff will be able to micro-volunteer with a philanthropic or NGO-led project if they choose. In this way, NGO’s gain short-term access to new skills which enables them to deliver their quest to benefit humanity
Other multinationals run volunteer schemes or have created portals into their business for NGOs & funding bodies, e.g. Dow Corning, IBM, & Pfizer. PULSE lab is differentiated by the goal to harness resources across GSK in addition to existing healthcare projects whilst providing a single entry point for 3rd parties along philanthropic lines.
As human capital is the primary resource being made available, the competition for employee time will be against GSK’s commercial objectives.
NGOs that see a role in managing this interface with multinational business could help in inter-business relationships along philanthropic lines.
Existing NGO partners could feel pressure from new collaborations. Relationships will require careful management to ensure a strategic & deliverable portfolio

Through her PULSE assignment, Ann recognised the lack of low-cost, child-friendly formulations for fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) of HIV medications in resource-poor settings. Generic manufacturers operating in local settings typically do not have the expertise or funding to develop these complex FDCs that would improve paediatric compliance.
Since legacy GSK company Burroughs Wellcome first developed AZT, GSK has consistently led the way in developing many of the gold-standard treatments vital to developing these paediatric FDCs. Ann solicited help from PULSE alumni to bring this idea to life. These conversations led the four of us PULSE Alumni to recognise that the PULSE Lab innovation model could be used to bring scientific rigour to a more diverse collection of innovative ideas. The goal of PULSE Lab went from being a delivery mechanism for one idea to becoming an incubator & accelerator to support a whole host of novel ideas.
In the past 12 months, we launched a world-wide call within GSK for PULSE Lab submissions. Highly motivated, passionate individuals now have a mechanism to seek business support for their ideas. Through a Dragons Den process, a panel of senior stakeholders & PULSE alumni with relevant experience evaluated the 35 ideas submitted in this first round & prioritized the ideas by their potential for success. Visibility from the panel has helped submitters make connections across the business & gives them implicit approval to continue working on these ideas. PULSE alumni submitters & panel members continue to be engaged in the highly-impactful goals they had on their assignments eg the micro-volunteering idea now has dedicated resource to develop the model & deliver it across GSK. This will open the opportunity to thousands more people to engage with philanthropic projects.
PULSE Lab is building the capabilities of key talent & is developing the next generation of GSK leaders.
The PULSE Lab process builds human capital by unleashing the passions of talented individuals, honing their ability to write persuasive business cases & build traction for their ideas. Through the panel review process, they are connected to senior stakeholders & other PULSE alumni, building a network across GSK. Pursuing these projects in addition to their core jobs diversifies their skills & builds resilience through managing the challenges of pursuing novel ideas. PULSE alumni involvement in the panel increase employee ownership & engagement in the PULSE Lab. This process empowers employees to realize their unique talents & unleashes their passion to support GSK’s core mission. As PULSE Lab projects find traction, it starts a virtuous cycle to further support talent development.
We lack dedicated resource to manage the PULSE Lab, as all of us intrapreneurs are leading PULSE Lab in addition to our day jobs. We need robust mechanisms to connect related ideas/proposers, track the scope & delivery of the ideas portfolio, & assess the impact & effectiveness of a philanthropic/not-for-profit value-stream. Changing business priorities pull the PULSE Lab developers & other intrapreneurs away from this model.
Embedding the microvolunteering program within the organization will provide a secure resource option to deliver PULSE Lab projects. We are also exploring whether the PULSE Lab management can be brought under the remit of the PULSE Programme office to provide stronger, enduring senior sponsorship.

PULSE Lab helps GSK build human capital. Specifically:
LEADERSHIP:to craft persuasive business cases, attract other alliances, build intellectual property & manage projects.
EMPOWERMENT:to break through silos, facilitate integration across the enterprise, strengthen participation/ownership of decision-making & develop a stronger psychological contract with GSK.
INCREASE TACIT KNOWLEDGE:PULSE alumni have specialised scientific skills & real-world NGO experiences. This has uniqueness, is inimitable, creates value & contributes to GSK core competence.
Creating PULSE Lab has drawn significantly on discretionary effort from the PULSE alumni. The core team has negotiated informal arrangements with local line management to create & develop relevant cross-functional networks. We have consulted broadly with key stakeholders & knowledge workers across the enterprise to scope & refine the project. We have leveraged these relationships to secure both central (CEO Office, HR Talent & Leadership Development, PULSE Programme Office) & local (R&D leadership) sponsorship for our vision. This has accelerated communication efforts across the organisation. At a team level, we have made selective use of change management models & collaboration tools for knowledge sharing.
The endgame vision is for a self-sustaining PULSE lab with a portfolio of projects. Engaging staff in these projects will enhance the employee value proposition & build human capital for GSK. Our goal is to have a Board of senior stakeholders (academic/GSK) to review projects for suitability & to network for funding. PULSE Lab will remain a global matrix embedded within the enterprise & minimal central management, limited to coordination of funding applications, internal network maintenance, external network development (includes NGO’s, academia, & other GSK partnerships with a complementary CSR offering). Senior stakeholder support is critical to endorse selective commitment of resource from the lines & capitalise upon the model as an innovative forum for talent development.

Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
Ghana has a huge database of unemployed graduates and many more unskilled youth and adults. The situation is so bad that graduates have set up an 'Unemployed Youth Association' which means they sit at home and do nothing until government provides them with jobs.
The market for intelligent technological teaching devices is growing exponentially. The key factors driving this growth are the increase in the technology in Ghana and the rest of Africa, the double-income household and the loss of leisure time. Our target market's behavioral patterns are changing dramatically as well - research used to happen in many places;now increasingly it happens on the Internet.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Afropaddy launched a demo of its school module called Learners Curve where practical subjects such as Editing, 3D Animation, Batik and tie dye, Liquid Soap business, Beads making etc.Focusing on subjects students can learn quickly and affordably in order to encourage entrepreneurship. So instead of allowing graduates and unskilled people in Ghana sit at home,Afropaddy will create the avenue for them to teach and learn online and offline.Other African countries will use this model since the problems Ghana face in the area of education and unemployment are similar to all other African countries

Our website which is in beta has attracted over 7,500 registered members within 5months of going active*now suspended for maintenance). The concept used a marketing strategy of attracting people by involving local celebrities and some cutting edge entertainment activities.
Our first workshop was entrepreneurship and batik and tie dye classes which saw a graduate with a masters degree finish learning how to make splendid Batik and tie dye designs within three days and has started his own business. This to us, proves that this concept is workable and key to our development.
We shall provide the classes and workshops on as many subjects as shall be required. All offline classes shall be streamed online to reach a wider spectrum across the globe.
Afropaddy will be known as a powerhouse for students and adults to get first hand tuition on various subjects that focus on building entrepreneurs in Africa.

African social networks such as Naijapals.com, Allafricacafe.com, Iamaghanaian.com and Ghanawall.com have followed the trend of integrating all social networking tools from facebook into their websites. This move has failed because everybody is on facebook. Allafricancafe.com is a better competition among the list as they target an all African market. However apart from its design and African news feeds, the site has the same attributes as the others (such as movies and music).
During our research, we did not find any African Educative social network website like Afropaddy. Our market would use Afropaddy for its effectiveness and uniqueness.

Afopaddy was created to redirect the trend of social networking in Africa and soon the rest of the world. The founder recognized a major problem:unemployment and lack of skilled and educated youth was not getting any better, yet development in the sector of internet penetration in Ghana and Africa is on the increase. This improvement has its advantages, but in every advantage lies some disadvantages. The influx of social networks saw most youths spend their time on these networks. I wanted to do something about it, since i knew how addictive these mediums could be and how most of the users are uneducated and unemployed. So i got to work on finding a way to turn what i saw as a negative addiction into a positive addiction. Thus the creation of Afropaddy: a social network that will see young people learn and teach in a fun way. After testing the idea, i realised how catchy the concept was, generating over 7,000 members without any funding within 6months of going active.
Afropaddy has been able to attract almost 8,000members and over 500,000 visitors within 7months of going active. It's offline classes which aimed at getting practical subjects taught to students so they can be self reliant, has seen graduates and uneducated people learn how to make Batik and tie dye(first demo class). We are on our next move to organize our next class which is "how to make liquid soap". For now we believe giving the opportunity to people to learn and teach so they can put food on the table will impact not only on an individual but families to come.
Over the next 1 to 3 years, Afropaddy will be noted as a one stop shop for knowledge in a style that is fashionable and social. In 3 years, we envision that Africans will teach themselves over a platform that is border less. Graduates and professionals will have an avenue to share their knowledge and get paid for it. Afropaddy will explode over the shores of Ghana into the rest of Africa and will be known as a power house for sharing and selling knowledge.
Our major barrier is finance, as is the case always in many start ups. I believe for us to achieve 7,000 plus members all without any sort of funding, the sky will be the limit when we get an investor. Also, i believe internet penetration in Ghana and Africa as a whole still has some improvements to be to made. That is why we add offline classes to make sure the gap is bridged.
Another problem we face is also the lack of adequate skills. Our platform needs to be improved and we need more programmers and designers to take Afropaddy to the next level. But issues will be solved when we have the necessary financing. As much as we have ways to attract the best and still save a lot of money, we believe our staff must be well remunerated so they bring out their best.

Info is everywhere. However, knowledge is not. Hence, there is a need to extract and manage the knowledge of human capital in an organization. Today orgs pose immensely competitive environments where demands are high on employees for productivity, skills and knowledge. In such a situation, employees are wary of sharing knowledge that they have gained out of meticulous understanding and solving complicated problems in complex situations. Hence, every employee shares knowledge only partially, as he aims to become the single point of contact for a particular type of task so that he is recognized in the organization. There is not much of an issue as long as the employee remains in the organization. As employee attrition rate increases, enterprises are likely to lose access to critical knowledge.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
KShare is a cloud based gamified social enterprise knowledge management system. It employs innovative gamification, incentivizing n skill mgmt mechanisms to make knowledge sharing more willful and uses enterprise social network graphs to make knowledge sharing collaborative.
Incentives will motivate employees to willfully share knowledge. Enterprise Social Networking will enable better communication and collaboration and gamification thro' points for debating, real rewards & integration with appraisal system will foster competitive spirit in knowledge sharing.
Employees can share knowledge anytime and anywhere using tools such as podcast, webinars and recorded seminars besides document sharing. KShare enables speech search to search videos and audios for a particular content without playing them besides normal text search. HRs can do entire learning management using KShare. KShare will increase an employee’s visibility within an org improving chances of rewards and recognition.
KShare will include a very innovative gamification and incentivizing process very different from just badges and leaderboards. For eg. KShare points can be earned by both the trainer and the trainee, responding to a query n challenging responses. KShare can be used as a documentation manager with builtin features to motivate nhelp different employees do documentation specific to their needs.Eg.In IT,a software dev's documentatn needs are diff from thos of a business analyst.
Ash is a new joinee on Pfizer project. Right from Day-1 on the job, he has been thrown on fire and is having to deal with complex production issues. Ash is bound by deadlines and has to fix the production issues in a span of 2 days. Ash is new to the system and has very little clue of the issues which seem completely new and contextual, although he has received a generic training on the system. Ash speaks to his manager, who suggests him people to get in touch with. Ash does so, but alas! these people are busier than him and have their hands full with work. Hence, they have no time or intention to do a knowledge share with Ash. Ash pleads with them. Some of them spare 10-15 mins of their time to Ash, although unwillingly.
Imagine if the org. used KShare, Ash could log on to it and post his query. People in the company's network would get an email alert and interested parties would promptly respond on KShare as they would get incentives for responding aptly and promptly. Gamification would ensure people took each query as a game, challenged each other's response, got rewarded and have their names show up on the leaderboard with the points and incentives they have earned. KShare also aims at integrating the whole system with an employee's appraisal process, so that an employee is also appraised based on the knowledge he has shared. So, with KShare Ash's query is resolved in max 1-2 hours.Knowledge is shared in a willful manner and a whole record of the knowledge shared is left behind for employees to search on in future. This is just one scenario. More is possible using KShare.
Yammer is a potential competitor. However, Yammer doesn't include integration with appraisal system. Moreover, Yammer's venturing in the gamification space for innovating in the incentivizing space has been very banal with badges and leaderboard. It's clearly following the Foursquare way with no originality of ideas in incentivizing.
Yammer doesn't include speech search, doc mgmt
KShare, on the other hand not only brings in innovation in incentivizing people to share knowledge willfully but also challenge each others responses gamifying the whole process enabling complete sharing of information. KShare's gamification will include points for participating, points for challenging, real physical rewards, leaderboards and integration with appraisal, a component that motivates most employees.

I have faced similar situation in organization like the fictional character Ash did and I so wished that such a system were in place in my organization.Although my company was on Yammer, not many did actually find it any different from social networking the Facebook way. There was no real way Yammer incentivized employees to share knowledge. There was no monetory benefit or real rewards attached to sharing knowledge on Yammer unlike KShare which proposes to integrate with skill management and appraisal system besides including real rewards such as deals and discounts on products and services promoted on KShare by KShare OR gifts internally given by the company.
As I mentioned, the solution is still in idea phase. KShare when implemented is going to have a phenomenal impact. I've discussed the idea with HR managers of leading companies in India and all of them have been very exited about the idea and have encouraged me to go ahead with the project.I will not be surprised if the system leaves behind enterprise social networking systems such as Yammer in the number of users.
Almost any company small, medium or big that is into knowledge intensive business service (commonly known as KIBS) requires knowledge management. Digitization helps preserve information and knowledge. Hence, many businesses that are into legal, R&D, information technology, accountancy services etc. can benefit from using KShare.
KShare is a SaaS. Companies can scale up their knowledge repository on KShare without having to bother about maintenance. Furthermore, pricing will be as per usage. Companies will be more than willing to go for a SaaS based Knowledge Management System as this will take the headache of maintenance off their heads.
I expect that in 3 years from the time of implementation more than 27 companies will sign up for the cloud based software.
1) The project requires very competent software developers on the team. So, getting such people on board is going to be a challenge.
2) The project requires very fast maintenance and upgrades.
3) Customer service also has to be very rapid.
I plan to have a team of 2 dedicated software developers who can take care of the product roadmap besides software development and upgrades.
I plan to have a team of 2 developers for production support that will handle the customer service and maintenance part.
This being a cloud based SaaS, I plan to go with AWS-Amazon Web Services as the hosting partner.
I plan to take care of marketing this B2B software primarily through online marketing and direct marketing.

I've been a software developer, business analyst and pre-sales consultant myself before embarking on an MBA. Hence,I believe that I've the knowledge and skills to ideate and manage projects of such scale.
All I need is a team of dedicated software developers to develop the SaaS which I believe I can get from India as the country has no dearth of talented software geeks.

TIME = MONEY
In this world we always hear people saying TIME = MONEY but hardly see because the rich is only enjoying this.
Majority of the educated or we can say highly educated people are also unable to find themselves a reasonable job which can satisfy their qualification or needs.
So to provide a job or can say a business or doing partnerships or joint ventures with not only educated but talented and uneducated people we can try to bring self dependence to almost every individual irrespective of cast, color, gender, age, etc.
Making use of every possible time available and every person either working or unemployed or rejected by society to make a lively hood by his own and make world a better place to live with unity and peace , love and affection ,money and fame.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
It is based on the pooling of talent, time, knowledge, hard word, dedication, human resource, funds, etc as much as possible available and using them to provide the best solution or service or job or what ever the case may be in as much areas as possible.
This is like planning and creating a new world where main focus would be on unemployed people and improving the life and living standards of all the people joining by the way of MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING CUM BUSINESS CUM PROFESSION CUM SERVICING.
collecting the data of people who are unemployed and providing them to work for a specific area according to their desire and at a designation suitable to them after a short training session and try to gather funds for the company or the needed talent.
Funds collected would be for a service or a product(s) but it would be including a profit or advance as the case may be and after about, say 3 months the investor will be getting the funds given by them back in the form say maybe coupons or gift vouchers or special offers or money back into the bank account (if working with us(full time or part time) doesn't matters)
The funds collected will be used in such a manner that it is seen the minimum fixed obligation is achieved with a surety and the balance would be invested in establishing new business which could be small in size but would be providing the best output and results.
it is a type of both investment and/or partnership as the case maybe.
Few companies from which the basic plan matches are the general MLM COMPANIES like N-mart,RMP,Amway,Tupperware etc but the way of their working and that of ours Company is totally different and almost every one running legal business from a simple grocery shop to a big business man manufacturing almost every thing would be our competitor .
All the existing Companies just do the work in their own way but if they try and change their strategy then they may pose a challenge but this being a different strategy currently has nothing like competition or challenge from anyone.

Women are a untapped resource that can dramatically improve the state of global economies. There is an abundant body of research validating that now is the time to ensure that entrepreneurial women are able to access the networks that provide the resources, expertise and capital (including financial products) required for high-growth, innovative start-ups.
The economy is in critical need of high-growth entrepreneurs to create jobs. Women represent a promising, untapped opportunity to meet this need; research shows:
* all net new jobs in the US in the last 30 years were created by high-growth companies under 5 years old; and
* if women entrepreneurs had the same access to capital as their male-counterparts we would see 6M jobs created in the US within 5 years, 2M in year 1 alone.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Guided by a proven philosophy that gender diversity is an essential element of innovation, Astia is a pioneer, uniquely sourcing innovation and achieving an unparalleled success rate. A program designed for entrepreneurs by entrepreneurs, we connect women to our global community of over 3,000 investors, serial entrepreneurs, and industry leaders encircling the entrepreneur with a comprehensive value-added network and learning opportunity.
Research validates the need for a unique offering focused on including men and women. High-growth entrepreneurs are similar in almost every respect; however women place greater importance on the support, expertise and financial backing of business partners. This desire for community support and engagement is what Astia fulfills. This competition will support the Astia community, focused on providing women entrepreneurs and innovators with the access to networks and opportunities to compete and become dominant market players in high-growth arena.

Astia differentiates itself from these organizations due to:
- our approach of actively engaging men and women in our volunteer community that serves the under-represented and under-served women entrepreneurs
- Astia seeks entrepreneurs who are past the idea-stage of their entrepreneurial venture and are ready to take advantage of the Astia community as they reach the inflection point for hyper growth
- Astia is global, serving women-led start-ups irrespective of where they are based
Challenge to success: as Astia targets entrepreneurs past idea-stage, we rely on the work of other organizations to inspire and support these entrepreneurs through the initial stages of growth.

Previously known as the Women's Technology Cluster, Astia was founded in 1999 by Catherine Muther, former CMO of Cisco Systems, as part of her foundation, the Three Guineas Fund.
During celebrations for the company's IPO, Catherine realized that women were not participating at senior positions within the company, despite suitable qualifications and experience. This caused her to reflect upon her entire experience in high-growth entrepreneurship and she realized there was work to be done to get women into this part of the economy. Women were at the ready, they just were not participating in the right networks to ensure success via access to capital and access to expertise.
"We started Astia to address the issue of women's access to capital, specifically venture capital by women entrepreneurs building technology companies…" Catherine Muther
Astia’s mission is to propel women’s full participation as entrepreneurs and leaders in high-growth businesses, fueling innovation and driving economic growth. The activities of the organization are in line with this mission, striving for the full participation of women as entrepreneurs in the high-growth sectors, with particular focus on leveling the inequality between genders in relation to the capital and finance required to grow high-growth businesses.
Astia's activities ensure that entrepreneurial women are able to access the networks that provide the resources, expertise and capital required for high-growth, innovative start-ups. For this reason, capital and financial resources and products play a key component within our educational programs and resources for entrepreneurs.

Gender equality to capital and finance required to grow high-growth businesses
High-growth women entrepreneurs.
Currently women entrepreneurs do not have the same access to capital as their male-counterparts.
Astia currently delivers its Global Entrepreneur Program in three psychical locations: Silicon Valley, New York City and the UK. We also deliver programs in the State of Michigan, USA. We do however work successfully with entrepreneurs from around the globe, irrespective of their location.
We are in the process of planning for an Astia Entrepreneur Program in India. However, we have not yet delivered the first program as yet. Instead we have successfully served Indian companies via our three other markets.
To date we have successfully served companies from every continent. This model scales because it does so via a community of volunteers who identify as "Astia Advisors." Additional staff is only required in order to maintain relationships between and among that community of expert volunteers. This has proven to be an extremely efficient means to increase reach and impact. It is also an extremely effective means to create a movement for change.
We want to see a high-growth sector where women-led companies are able to access the same resources as their male-counterparts. Women entrepreneurs are statistically less likely to be funded. Astia is dedicated to the eradication of the need for the organization within the decade.
Research indicates that if women were to fully participate in high-growth entrepreneurship we would see a significant and measurable benefits.
The benefits are three fold:
For investors - higher returns where women are in leadership positions with men
For society - half the population's talents can be fully realized; women are half of MBAs and PhDs, more than half of all college graduates - there is an abundant pool of talent on the ready
For the economy - it means jobs. If women had the same access to capital as their male counterparts we would see 6 million jobs added to the economy in 5 years, 2 million in year one alone.
It is this impact we want to see.
Access to Networks - Around the globe, men and women are still by-and-large in separate business networks. Men are the holders of capital for entrepreneurs. Investment relies heavily on trusted business relationships. Astia is a model for creating a global network of men and women doing business together. In the future we see the Astia platform as a model for change for the entire ecosystem.
Access to Opportunity - Research shows that women self-assess differently than men and as a result often have lower aspirations commensurate with the lower assessment of their abilities. Astia exposes women to the opportunity of high-growth entrepreneurship and to the tools and networks needed to succeed within it. Astia also shows women how their prior experience maps to becoming a high-growth entrepreneur (this is especially the case with women scientists). This personal growth is best achieved through exposure to the Astia community of men and women who have been there themselves.
Over 1,200 women-led companies have been directly served by the Astia community and program and countless others look to our work as a reason to inspire their own entrepreneurial journey.
Since 2003, we have worked with over 325 women-led companies that have:
- Rasied over $1 billion
- Maintained a greater than 60% funding success rate within one year of joining Astia
- Achieved 25 exits, including 2 IPOs
Designed for high-growth companies at all stages, the Astia offering is implemented by more than 2,500 volunteer members of the Astia Advisor Network that includes more than 300 former and current CEOs and 300 investors. Astia is an extremely committed community of advisors, investors, industry leaders, and entrepreneurs. Astia has spent considerable effort in building such a large, diverse, experienced community for the benefit of under-served women in high growth entrepreneurship.
Astia's impact is far wider and broader than the individuals we serve and connect within our community. Astia works tirelessly in order to achieve an end to the dearth of women in the high-growth economy within the decade. The subsequent benefits to society, the economy and to innovation are well researched and documented. Companies with women in executive roles out-perform for investors, create more jobs, and fully leverage the untapped talent of half of the population. Further, research demonstrates that innovation requires diverse teams and in particular teams with women out innovate and out perform those without. Our 10-year plan "The Decade of the Woman Entrepreneur 2010-2020" has clear goals that when realized should eliminate the need for Astia as an organization.
Sustainability and financial security of the organization. As a 501(c)(3) organization, Astia relies on its corporate supporters and individual donors. In difficult economic times, donations to charitable organizations come under strain. We therefore have in place a thought-out and both short-term and long-term fundraising strategies to ensure that the organization continues to grow and deliver its impact.
In the past year Astia's Board of Trustees has been rebuilt to better address our current challenges in order to fully realize our forward potential. In particular, the board is now global in reach and fully aligned in the "Decade of the Women Entrepreneur" strategy.

We address the problem to solve through four dimensions 1. Strong barriers of entry for financial services for underserved communities (especially women) for generation of endogenous and resilient local economic development. 2. Strong patterns of consumerism as opposed to investment and entrepreneurial activities in relation to money received via remittances, creating weak local money flows that affect demand and supply dynamics that translate into revitalization of the local economy. 3. Paternalistic schemes from target groups and insufficient funds from implementing institutions to grant cash start ups for small businesses. 4. High costs of sending fees of remittances and unavailability of nearby agencies to collect them, posing a security threat for families who travel to collect them.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Our solution is twofold: internalization of outward money flows through administration of remittances via mobile phone, into a local business network, and, a local campaign for revitalization of local money flows and entrepreneurism based on already existing assets. Remittances are administered by senders using special software developed by STRO, to be used for purchases related to fulfilling immediate needs of remittances receivers in a local business network. Also, community workshops will be delivered on awareness generation on how each individual is an agent for change if most of his expenses and investments take place within the community (the more times money changes hands, the more income each person has), promoting an entrepreneurial attitude towards unfulfilled market niches, providing services of coaching for regeneration for potential entrepreneurs who wish to establish a new business idea.
A mother of two is trying to thrive in her “quesadillas” business. She has tried to sell them to the local markets but they have refused due to her low production capacity. She has also tried to raise funds through a small loan but has been declined by local financial institutions due to her inability to produce collateral. Her husband sends a small monthly remittance that she must collect in town, which is 20km away from her community, which supposes a security threat from carrying cash on public transportation where assaults frequently occur. After attending an awareness generation community workshop, this woman finds more clients willing to buy her products, including local small stores. She has also found support to upgrade her business through the coaching for regeneration sessions, pre-selling "quesadillas" tickets to her neighbours, who pay in advance and collect their product on the weekends. Her father has agreed to lend her one cow to diversify her business and start salling also cheese, having one of her teenage daughters help her on the weekend. Also, her husband now pays directly to local stores from the US a monthly fixed amount to provide groceries, thus, she has to travel to collect the remittance less often, and carries less cash with her.

We have no competence regarding our approach to local economic development, since our project does not grant money or technical assistance to our target groups, but spaces for joint analysis of local money flows and how they can benefit the local economy through behavioral changes and new business start ups, using already existing assets and networks. Regarding remittances, our competence are transnational agencies such as western union, which do not reach the local level that this proposal pursues regarding a local business network. Both instances therefore complement already existing efforts for improving access and use of financial alternative services for the economically disadvantaged.

Our moments: Seeing how many people were active using cell phones, although the area of Quilali is very remote and isolated, we saw great potential to use them to increase connectivity and access to financial services for this underserved community. People were also very hopeful in knowing that they wouldn’t have to travel far anymore to collect remittances, due to high robbery rates in the area. Also, we noticed many young men drinking beer early in the morning, who received remittances, complaining about unavailability of jobs. We then thought that through assets based approach, these young men could realize how to make idle resources work for them, through promotion of entrepreneurism instead of consumerism of remittances received. in the words of the regional director of a partner implementing institution: “If I had known of this approach before, we would have streamlined it and used it in our programs for development a long time ago, given the sustainability it implies.
The main objective is to disseminate an innovative system that involves migrants in local economic development processes of their rural geographic area of origin, facilitated by the use of mobile phones, informatics, economic literacy workshops and the construction of community endogenous regeneration values. This project addresses problems related to migration and remittances as well as the opportunities that this fact brings along, through an integral approach. The goal is to generate a 15% costs reduction regarding transference of remittances through the use of internet based software, improving their use by spending them in a local rural business network through the use of POS and SMS, strengthened by a local campaign for maximization of local money flows for generation of LED.

Alternative endogenous solutions for complementing financial services
We hope to spread our approach to rural communities in Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. These communities are characterized by economical activities related to subsistence agriculture, small businesses, high levels of migration to the U.S. (implying remittances) and employment in sweatshops in the closest bigger cities. The communities we wish to approach show high levels of isolation from regional economic activity, due to weak infrastructure regarding roads, which indirectly leads to lower levels of access to education and health. Also, previous development interventions have created dependency dynamics among people in these communities, meaning that their inhabitants expect to receive financial support from institutions who implement projects, which is a behavioral pattern we expect to transform.
Yes, our solution can work in any region that displays similar characteristics to the ones described in the last question, which are very common in rural Central America. Our actions are appropriate for communities that show high levels of income generated through remittances and low levels of economic growth linked to investment of remittances received, thus , showing strong pattern of external consumerism and great potential for revitalization of the local economy. The model can be replicated wherever there is unavailability of convenient local systems to collect remittances that would help avoid exposure to robbery and security risks. Furthermore, according to current research in the field of remittances, senders often feel frustrated because they have little influence on how the money they send is spent by their families back home. Our model can work in any community where remittances senders would like to be more involved in the investing and spending decisions their families make
We expect our model to have consolidated and still be generating benefits to the local community due to a behavioral voluntary change on the perception of poverty by our target group. In ten years, we imagine people in rural communities of the central American region enjoying the benefits of having established their own small businesses, creating a vibrant local economy where offers and demands successfully meet. We also expect to have generated higher levels of satisfaction from remittance senders, who would fully support the creation of a better socio economic environment in their communities. Finally, we expect our model to have geographically spread into other communities in the Central American region, through partner local institutions.
Changes required to make this happen can be seen in progressive steps. The first change regards a mindset change towards appreciation of local assets, including creativity, reliability and self-esteem by our target group. We expect to achieve this change by delivery of tailor made community workshops and coaching sessions tackling these pressing issues. On second instance, remittance senders would have to be motivated by a better use of the money they send to their families back home, which we expect to accomplish through awareness generation campaigns regarding the potential of local money flows to boost the local economy. Finally, we would have to be able to fully develop our activities at pilot level and to disseminate results among the region, to spread the methodology and its benefits for its users.
So far, we have implemented our solution through the first stage of a pilot project. Technical results have been achieved, such as running feasibility studies, coverage investigations of the mobile network, etc., but the main results regarding improvements in the local economy are yet waiting to take place after settling necessary technicalities in the field. However, due to community workshops on awareness generation on the importance of local money flows, remittances receivers have already increased their consumption patterns towards local products, as evidenced by a local cooperative store.
Remittances transferred through this channel add 10% multiplier effect in the local economy. 15% of the remittances sent through the local business network can be used to create additional credit by partners. For example, in two different communities, 2000 clients will receive remittances via mobiles, leading to90% reduction of time collecting and 10% cost reduction. Also, we would expect 4000 migrants from the target group use the system to transfer remittances. We expect 10% of participants develop a business idea and request coaching, 1/3 of which implement ideas in less than year (250 created businesses).Proportion of business ideas implemented with remittances’ funds increases in 30%, and 60% of the participants acknowledge change in consumption patterns benefitinf the local economy.
The innovative character of the methodology poses a challenge, given that project officers are merely facilitators of local community mobilization and “coachers” of entrepreneurs (in case they request it), not advisors or experts that provide solutions to local communities. This shift demands openness towards a behavioral change from the project officers and a break-down of assistentialist patterns from communities. To overcome this, STRO provides close advisory and includes additional methodological “reinforcement” sessions to the basic training program, including also adaptation to specific conditions of the target group. Regarding remittances administration, some countries have intricate regulatory processes for approval of our procedures. To overcome this, we advance legal work before

In 2012, Accion was named by Philanthropedia as one of the top non-profits in microfinance. An evaluation by a group of 72 experts identified Accion as one of eleven high-impact nonprofits working in the field of international microfinance based on a variety of factors. In 2011, we were named the world’s most effective microfinance organization by the same group.
Accion has been named a top-rated charity by the World Economic Forum, the American Institute of Philanthropy, Charity Navigator, Worth Magazine and the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance. Selected for the fifth consecutive year for its pioneering approaches to poverty alleviation, Accion was awarded the 2008 Social Capitalist Award by Fast Company magazine and the Monitor Group, and was named one of the top 45 organizations “using business excellence to engineer social change.”

650 million people, nearly fifteen percent of humanity, have a disability, and over 80 percent live in developing countries. The vast majority has the capacity to make self-sustaining economic contributions, but find themselves excluded. The self-sufficiency model of microfinance could be essential to bringing financial inclusion to all persons with disabilities. Yet, only 0.5% of microfinance clients come from this underserved community. Additionally, 40% of microfinance clients are expected to acquire a disability by 65. Therefore, microfinance institutions that achieve disability inclusion gain access to an untapped market, improve retention of their current clients and address a compelling social need.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
By lowering the barriers to financial inclusion (often in very low cost ways), millions more persons with disabilities (PWD) can become economically self-sufficient. There have been isolated, small initiatives aimed at increasing financial inclusion for PWD, but not any broad-scale initiatives by a microfinance leader to create a model for disability inclusion that can be replicated globally. This project aims to do just that by: 1) engaging different stakeholders including disabled persons organizations and financial services providers, 2) field-testing Accion’s Roadmap for Inclusion at one microfinance institution in Paraguay (in parallel with implementations in other countries), 3) creating practical tools for MFIs to increase their disability inclusion and 4) sharing tools and finding with both the microfinance and disability fields.
This initiative will utilize Accion’s Roadmap to Inclusion which distills emerging best practices related to PWD economic empowerment into a pragmatic blueprint for action. The Roadmap categories are: 1) universal design and reasonable accommodation, 2) partnership with disability organizations, 3) human resources policy practices and disability inclusion training, 4) legal framework, 5) technology-enabled inclusion and 6) financial capability.
We will work with Fundación Paraguaya to implement the Roadmap, starting with a current capabilities assessment to determine where Fundación Paraguaya stands today and set goals for each Roadmap category. The assessment tool that is developed and tested will be shared with the microfinance industry.
Based on the findings of the assessment, the project team will develop a customized Disability Action Plan, highlighting and prioritizing inclusion capability gaps and fleshing out the steps that must be taken to address them. The team will also seek to develop two standardized disability inclusion tools to be shared with the global microfinance industry. In phase two of the project, Fundación Paraguaya will begin implementing their Disability Action Plan with the goal of addressing their highest priority inclusion gaps and doubling their clients with disabilities within 24 months.
What makes this effort truly innovative is that there are no direct peers or competitors to our activities. There are some discrete microfinance initiatives serving disabled clients; there are disabled persons organizations looking at self-employment, but there is no global non-profit leader bringing together these perspectives, garnering best practices from both fields and creating a broad, scalable approach that aims at providing financial services to the marginalized poor disabled population.

On vacation with a cousin who serves as Legal Counsel for the National Federation of the Blind, I was provoked to ask myself whether MFIs were reaching out to persons with disabilities. On doing some research, I learned conclusively that they were not. Providing financial services to this excluded and very vulnerable population had been overlooked. This preliminary finding received further confirmation when I met with leaders from various microfinance non-profits and learned that reaching out to PWD had never been on their agenda. From that point on, it became a calling for me to address this market failure. I have been working single-mindedly on this issue ever since, believing that economic empowerment is key to full participation in civil society for PWD.
The goal of this initiative is for every person with disability able to participate in the global economy to have that chance – and the support necessary to seize it. This initiative will focus on assisting existing financial institutions to become fully disability accessible and inclusive. This will include addressing physical, attitudinal, and process barriers that impact the disabled as clients as well as employees.
The excluded community affected by this project are persons with disabilities, including but not limited to, hearing and visually impaired as well as those with physical disabilities. Beginning in Paraguay, our global strategy envisions a world where access to microfinance is the rule not the exception. PWD constitute the largest single vulnerable population in the world and any poverty reduction strategy must target them. In Paraguay, there are many low-cost solutions to exclusion that are being implemented from putting in ramps and doing sensitivity trainings. The biggest barrier to change is entrenched attitudes that view PWD as incapable of taking care of themselves and participating in economic society. India has a very large PWD population and this is the next market we plan to enter.
The disability inclusion program is absolutely designed to work in other geographies and regions – it is exactly this scalability and replicability that makes the project innovative and impactful. The program will fine-tune the Roadmap to Inclusion, develop tools for implementation of the Roadmap strategies and share all of this work with our colleagues in microfinance and disability globally with the aim of having the program embraced and implemented as widely as possible.
Built into the Roadmap are steps that will account for differences between regions, countries and types of financial services provider. For example, the legal context for disability inclusion strategies will be examined in each country of implementation to determine obstacles, opportunities and necessary adaptations in approach.
Persons with disabilities who have a desire and ability to be economically active can tap into the power of financial services to unleash their potential and build self-sufficiency. 5% of all microfinance clients will be PWD – up from the current 0.5%. Clients are satisfied with the quality and accessibility of microfinance services they receive. MFIs embrace the double-bottom line (social and financial) benefits of serving PWD and are disability-friendly. Disability inclusion becomes a practical option for MFIs with the testing and further development of implementation processes, tools and knowledge sharing. The results of the project encourage MFIs to reach out to PWD in their communities.
Very broadly, in order for systemic changes to occur, MFIs need to view persons with disabilities as an important, valuable market segment. This change in mentality and orientation will be brought about by proving the business case of providing financial services to PWD (the moral and legal case is already strong). It is similar to the challenge facing MFIs when they first started serving the bottom of the pyramid – traditional financial service providers did not think the poor were credit-worthy, that they had the capacity for self-employment and disciplined finance. In order to empower the self-employment of the currently neglected disabled poor, it needs to be done in a way that is financially self-sustaining or it will never reach any significant scale.
Accion has pushed PWD financial inclusion to a place on the agenda at microfinance conferences. This is an important part of our work because attitudinal barriers are the single biggest obstacle to change. We have presented at the Microcredit Summit, the UN, the State Department, the European Microfinance Platform, to name a few. We brought MFIs together with disability organizations in India and have identified a number of MFIs in India who would like to work with us on implementing the Roadmap. We published an important white paper - A New Access Frontier: Persons with Disabilities. We disseminate our latest findings on the CFI blog. Finally, the Smart Campaign has enshrined non-discrimination as one of its key client protection principles.
Fundación Paraguaya will double the PWD that it serves. We will work with them to achieve the following: 1) PWD have full access to Fundación Paraguay’s built environments, products and services, 2) we develop close relationships with Disabled Persons Organizations, 3) staff has awareness of rights and economic viability of PWD, 4) laws related to disability inclusion and economic citizenship are understood and reflected in operations, 5) assistive technologies are employed to fully empower PWD staff and clients, 6) current or prospective PWD clients have the educational support they need to utilize financial products wisely.
- Risk: Not finding the right disability organization partner(s); Overcome: spend time to identify key leaders.
- Risk: Project perceived as low priority for Fundación Paraguaya staff beyond core team; Overcome: Have project manager in place and stick with Roadmap timelines.
- Risk: We “bite off more than we can chew”; Overcome: Customize Roadmap for local circumstances / priorities.
- Risk: Disability inclusion approach we forge in Paraguay does not impact the broader commercial microfinance industry, e.g. our implementation roadmap and tools prove difficult to adapt to other markets and circumstances; Overcome: Write up and disseminate our findings to MFIs.

The Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion is an action research center that works on behalf of the microfinance industry. Fundación Paraguaya is a leading MFI in Paraguay that reaches 44,000 clients (at end of 2011) with microcredit and other services. Handicap International has a track record in PWD economic inclusion that includes 60 related projects spanning the globe.
We will reach out to the entire financial services community, but our initial efforts will target microfinance institutions to best leverage our expertise and industry relationships. We will target Paraguay and India first, as these are markets with high levels of disabled poor and are locations where we have strong local relationships. Within the disabled community we will focus first on people with physical disabilities, including but not limited to, visual and hearing impaired.
The program has had incubation support from Accion International both in terms of funding support and strong programmatic guidance. This has afforded the initiative time to understand the needs in the market, the barriers to addressing these needs and innovations that can help break down these barriers. Accion has worked closely with MFIs for the past 50 years and has strong local technical expertise and relationships to help successfully implement the program. There is strong commitment to serving the working poor with disabilities by the local implementing partner, Fundación Paraguaya.

Metro Vancouver is home to the second largest Chinese restaurant industry in North America (CRFA, 2009). More notably, it is internationally known to serve the best Chinese cuisine in the world (Condé Nast, 2010). Although our Chinese restaurant industry has achieved global recognition, they are radically underdeveloped in the competitive advantage of ‘sustainability’. Using the topic of shark finning to initiate dialogue with restaurants, our solution will increase accessibility of opportunities for Asian restaurants to green their businesses. Our solution will develop a business network and produce quantifiable results through case studies to demonstrate to the broader Chinese and Asian restaurant industries that greening their operation benefits both their business and the environment.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
We will launch a lighthouse Program to transform an Asian restaurant that will be our Pilot Business (PB) who will be the first in Canada’s Asian restaurant industry to shift to these Green Initiatives (GI) 1. sourcing local produce, 2. removing all unsustainable seafood items from their menu, 3. reducing energy consumption, and 4. committing to zero-waste goals.
Working with our partner organizations Ocean Wise (OW) and Green Table Network (GTN), we will publish, distribute, and publicize a bilingual Case Study (CS) detailing the business analysis for each Initiative. The CS will increase accessibility for other businesses in the Asian restaurant industry. Moreover, we will demonstrate business value by using positive consumer reinforcement through public celebrations and events. This will directly creative a competitive advantage for the PB, showcasing to competitors that there is financial and social value in operating sustainably.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
This Program is not only significant for the restaurant industry but for local Asian businesses in general that are looking for strategies to gain a competitive advantage - this will be the spark that will create a demand from local consumers for green business.
Each of the PB’s GIs will be rolled out individually to collect data independent of the other Initiatives. Consumer data will be conducted to gauge demand, support and awareness.
Timeline as follows:
Pre-change/ adoption of Initiative
- Work with partners and PB to secure suppliers needed to implement the change
- Measurement of pre-change data
Implementation of GIs
For three months post-transition:
- Survey consumer demand, support, and awareness
- Measurement of post-change data to assess PB's triple bottom line
- Assessment of change in relation to goals and ff needed, make further changes to meet goals
Fourth month post-transition:
- Writing, designing, and publishing of this Initiative’s Case Study; highlighting challenges, Asian restaurant specific changes, and consumer, business, and environmental impact data
Throughout the implementation of the PBs GIs, we will be:
1. Publicizing their business leadership to illustrate to the public a new market niche;
2. Demonstrate value by organizing events where we will leverage our and our partner organizations' social networks to support the PB’s business leadership by “voting with their dollars” and creating positive reinforcement;
3. Coordinating meetings to encourage and consult interested restaurants in implementing similar GIs
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Across Canada, there are currently a few organizations working on “greening” restaurants and filling specific niches, ranging from supplying green material to consulting restaurants on their operations. What sets Shark Truth apart from our peers is that our Program will be to first to be a cross-cultural bridge for these organizations to break into and have access to the Asian restaurant industry.
Shark Truth will provide the network, relationships, and communications support for our partners to continue building long-term partnerships with the businesses on board.

Kevin: While working with Chinese restaurants in Metro Vancouver to get them to remove shark fin from their menus, Shark Truth also set a goal of having these restaurants provide sustainable seafood options as alternatives. Many of the restaurants we talked to knew about the shark fin issue but were unwilling to remove the item citing losing competitiveness and seeing this change as a risk as reasons why they maintained the status quo.
The “Aha!” moment was when one restaurant that Shark Truth has been working with agreed to remove shark fin from their menu but also expressed that they wanted to become the Greenest Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. This was a pivotal moment as this presented the opportunity to implement green changes in a traditional Chinese restaurant beyond shark fin and obtain measured (versus theoretical) data to show others that these green changes for any restaurant will result in a competitive edge that is a smart long-term investment - not a risk.
Goal 1: Engaging Businesses
-To increase awareness, exposure, and accessibility of green solutions for the Asian restaurant industry. Quantitatively, to have an increasing number of Asian restaurants actively greening their operations.
Goal 2: Creating a Market Niche & Competitive Edge
Giving consumers tools such as Green List maps to make informed decisions about what kind of green alternatives are and how their choice can make a difference
Working with English and ethnic media to create a public narrative for the emerging field of “green Asian restaurants”
Goal 3: Transforming the Feedback Loop
Integrating Goals 1 and 2, we will create one of the first public, accessible consumer-to-business feedback loops for the Asian restaurant industry for continued positive reinforcement
Having worked on the shark conservation issues for the past three years, we are witnessing that consumers are not only staying away from shark fin products but are also actively requesting sustainable alternatives to shark fin at restaurants. We have activated a dialogue with consumers about “sustainable consumption” when dining out, and now we’re ready to turn that dialogue into action.
The PB will be the first Asian restaurant in Metro Vancouver to provide sustainable menu options and publicly announce that they committed to greening their business for reducing their environmental impacts. With the Program being in its final planning stages, it has already had positive impact as the PB has committed to:
1. Removing shark fin from their menu
2. Signing on as our Pilot Business to further green their restaurant
2. Willing to be a spokesperson for shark fin issues, and GIs they adopt
Short-term Impact (1 year)
• The transformation of the first Asian restaurant to “Go Green”
• 500 restaurant clientele concerned about environmental issues given opportunity to show demand and support for green alternatives
• A consumer-business feedback loop created to demonstrate real-time and tangible value for businesses that implement GIs
Medium-term Impact (2-5 years)
• Dramatic increase in demand for green alternatives among restaurant clientele
• 5-10 Asian restaurants participating in greening operations
• Development and growth of a green economy to serve the needs of the Asian restaurant industries
• Restaurants increase transparency by publicly reporting a triple bottom line
• Competitive niche for sustainable Asian restaurants is developed and profitable
1. Green business network needed to support this Program: We have identified this as a potential barrier as a network of organizations with services for greening Asian restaurants has not yet developed. A key role for the Campaigner will be to build business relationships among partner organizations and restaurants as a way to foster this network and help existing organizations extend their work into Asian restaurants.
2. Language and cultural barriers: This will be overcome by facilitating meetings with bilingual team members who understand the language, culture, and the business perspective, in addition to production of bilingual materials.

The City of Vancouver has the goal to be the Greenest City in the World by 2020 and Metro Vancouver is home to some of the best Chinese food in the world. We are strategically working with a PB in this area to amplify the first announcement, and to set an international stage for sustainable leadership in the Asian restaurant industry.
There is potential to expand the Program to the Greater Toronto Area where there is also a significant Asian restaurant industry, after 2-3 years of launching our model here.
In only three years with less than $100,000, we have diverted 80,000 bowls of shark fin from consumption through our consumer campaign, saving 8,000 sharks from being eaten. We are in a strong position to be the cross-cultural bridge between existing foodservice-related environmental organizations and the industry: we have built expertise on how to effectively activate consumers using a cultural lens, and now are poised to move up the supply chain to work with the industry directly.
Perhaps most importantly, the staff and volunteers involved in this Program are genuinely passionate and dedicated to helping the Asian restaurant industry transition into greener operations as *we are* their clientele, and we want to support businesses that align with our personal values of sustainability.

Acceso, Equidad.
More than seventy percent of Vietnamese farmers, the majority of whom are poor live in the countryside. It is reported that many of them do not have access to financial services that would allow them to invest in production activities and cope with climate extreme events. Further, the procedure is too complex and time consuming, in particular in terms of the time required to obtain a signature from the village cadres in order to be eligible for the loan. Consequently, they go to local moneylenders with extremely high interest, thus contributing to poverty in the already poor rural Vietnam.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
People’s Credit Fund (PCF) is operated according to a hybrid of banking and cooperative system. The goal of PCF is to support its members and to bring into play collective action. This mechanism effectively mobilizes capital sources within the communities, especially in rural areas where people are not accustomed to the complex and time consuming banking procedures to be eligible to bank loans. One of PCF’s strengths is to have affordable financial products tailored to the needs of undeserved and excluded communities. Each PCF is an independent economic unit, but closely connected with each other through mechanisms of principal regulations, information exchange and risk management.
Chinh Bui is a member of Bin village’s Women’s Saving and Credit group. In 2005, prior to the start of CECAD’s project, Chinh’s family was one of the poorest households in Bin village. Being a female head of the household, she worked very hard to support her family, but had problems making ends meet. In 2005 she was one of the first women who joined the village group’s Women’s Saving and Credit Group. With the support of the group members, she took a loan from the group to invest in animal husbandry. At the beginning, she kept chickens and ducks. Gradually, she saved money and bought cattle. In 2008, she had to sell her cattle to pay for her daughter to go to college. With a very small amount of money left, she decided to keep a sow. She learned a great deal from other group members how to raise sows. She has now becomes one of the most successful women who know how to keep sows and piglets. Her daughter graduated from college and has found a job. Her family becomes an upper-middle household. She has set a bright example for other women in the village to follow.
There are governmental banks, such as Vietnam Bank for Social Policies and the Agribank that attempt to support farmers in the area. However, the procedure is too complex and time consuming, in particular in terms of the time required to obtain a signature from the village cadres in order to be eligible for the loan. Consequently, many poor farmers do not have access to bank loans, and go to local moneylenders with extremely high interest instead to invest in their production activities. CECAD is committed to help marginalized Muong farmers gain better access to financial services, thus contributing to poverty alleviation in the region.

I have seen many women in the project site, who are very intelligent but did not have opportunities to go to school. They end up working hard, but earn much less than men do. Due to patriarchal norms, most of them have to give up their dreams and get married at a very early age. I recognized that the best way to help them to build a better life in their native village is to help them become more financially independent. Through better access to financial services, poor and marginalized women in particular and men in general will have opportunities to invest in production activities as well as other income generating activities, thus contributing to poverty reduction and community well-being improvements.
The proposed project will help poor farmers in Thanh Hoi and Tu ne communes, especially marginalized women gain better access to financial services and cope with extreme events to reduce poverty and improve community well-being. Such initiative will encourage poor farmers, especially marginalized women to build a life within their community. This holistic approach encourages young people to stay in farming, which in turn secures food supplies for the region. A successful demonstration of this approach will be used to spread such practices to other communities in the province and across Vietnam.
Tu Ne and Thanh Hoi communes are located in Tan Lac district, Hoa Binh province. The two communes support a population of 10,451 people. More than 70% of the population are people from the Muong ethnic minority group. Poor households in Tu Ne account for 31.7% and Thanh Hoi for 27.2% of the total. The majority of these households do not have access to loans or credits from either NGOs or governmental organizations. CECAD has helped establish a network for community development organizations from the village level to the commune level, under which community-based organizations have been set up to manage development programs, such as Women’s Saving and Credit Group in each village. However, those groups have been operated in piecemeal and isolated instances, thus hindering further success of the groups.
The Vietnam Association of People’s Credit Fund (VAPCF) was established in 2005. It is the Government’s policy to spread the model to the entire country. It is therefore of great importance to establish more PCFs in Hoa Binh province in particular and in the northwest region of the country in general, where poverty is more persistent. So that more affordable financial products will be tailored to the needs of poor and marginalized ethnic minority communities, thus contributing to poverty alleviation in the region.
- 50% of the total population of the two Muong communities have access to financial services. So poor farmers, especially marginalized women will be able to invest in production and other income generating activities.
- PCF members’ income increased by 50% through income generating activities.
- Well-being of 50% PCF members will be increased.
- Two PCFs will be established in the region.
- When a life within their community will be built it will encourage the younger generations to stay with their families, thus minimizing migration to big cities.
It requires the local government leaders at the provincial, district and commune levels to change their point of views about the governmental banking system:
- It is not the only financial service provider in the country.
- Accessibility barriers prevent communities from reaching financial services, thus contributing to poverty.
- PCF is operated according to a hybrid of banking and cooperative system. It financially supports its members and brings into play collective action.
- PCF contributes to construction of new rural Vietnam.
Capacity building for human resources and networking are needed.
CECAD began working in Tu Ne and Thanh Hoi in 2004. With support from the Inter-Church Organization for Development Cooperation (ICCO), CECAD has assisted two communes to improve livelihoods, protect the environment and preserve the Muong cultural identity. CECAD has helped establish a network for community development organizations from the village level to the commune level, under which community-based organizations have been set up to manage development programs, such as Women’s Saving and Credit Group in each village. Up to now, 724 members have contributed to their groups $30,000. Loans have been spent on cultivation and animal husbandry, which in turn help improve the status of women both at home and in the public. However, those groups have been operated in piecemeal and isolated instances, thus hindering further success of the groups.
- A People’s Credit Fund will be established for the population of Thanh Hoi and Tu Ne communes, Tan Lac district.
- 20% of the total population of the two Muong communities has access to financial services.
- Poor farmers, especially marginalized women will be able to invest in production and other income generating activities.
- PCF members’ income increased by 20% through income generating activities.
- Well-being of 20% PCF members will be increased.
- The point of views of the local governmental leaders about PCF will be changed so that PCF will receive more political support.
- PCF will compete with the other banks in the area. The PCF interest is lower than that of the bank. So farmers’ awareness of PCF will be raised.
- Members of the women’s saving and credit groups are concerned about the fact that their money will be merged with the money of the other groups in the communes. It might be difficult for them to withdraw the money when needed. Solution: More appropriate and clear regulations need to be developed.
- Due to low capacity of the management board of the Women’s Saving and Credit Groups, capacity building, workshops and study tours to success models will therefore be needed.

CECAD partners with the local government, Vietnam Bank for Social Policies, the Agribank and the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam. Gaining support from powerful stakeholders to help CECAD to win more resources – this makes it more likely that the project will be successful. Those partners will help improve capacity for human resources of PCF. By working closely with the local government, we have helped them design local development plans and public policy.
Yes, we are currently targeting other communities in other districts of Hoa Binh province to duplicate the model. The target is to have a PCF established in each district. In such a way, more poor farmers will gain access to financial services, thus contributing to poverty alleviation in the region.

FundWeaver along with many others see the Aboriginal youth, innovators and entrepreneurs as the drivers of change that will elevate Canadian Aboriginal society going forward. Yet, in spite of the fact many entrepreneurs have great support within their communities and networks, capital requests remain an antiquated system whereby all of one’s dreams must be put on paper, shuffled across a few desks and decided upon by someone whom they’ve never met.
The current system leaves many people unaware of the great ideas going on around them and unable to help the ideas that fail to get funding. The top down structure of funding distances the potential benefactors/customers and often times the evaluators themselves from the ideas, and provides little feedback or recommendations.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
FundWeaver looks to build an online network uniting Aboriginal members, organizations and bands across Canada around the ideas that will shape the future prosperity of their communities. FundWeaver aims to drive awareness, engagement and funds to these ideas from Indigenous and non-indigenous people and organizations alike, ensuring great ideas can garner bottom up support, regardless of how large or small the idea.
With project creators able to post their ideas online, quickly ideas are able to harness the minds of the masses as they provoke dialogue, invite suggestions and raise funds all on the FundWeaver platform. By peeking into these projects while they remain on the drawing board, people are able to become a collaborative part of the process through their ideas and contributions.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Crowdfunding is a reverse market. No Angel Investors or VC's to take your project or idea to the public. The public comes first and the funds come second. Crowdfunding on FundWeaver allows the project creator to set the amount of funds they seek to raise, the 'Personalized Thank Yous" they offer and lets them create a video to explain their project idea.
A crowdfunding campaign on FundWeaver is live 24/7 for a set period of time. As the project creator, you determine the timeline you wish to keep your campaign live up to a maximum of 88 days. Throughout that time, anybody can hit the ‘contribute' button and get behind your project financially.
This is where the real work begins! You have to use those social media plugs, word of mouth, F&F (friends and family) and your communities around you to share in and build momentum around the professional goals you're setting for yourself.
Keeping with the altruistic sentiment, project creators must give back a token of appreciation. Contribution thresholds and their ‘Personalized Thank Yous’ are a big part of the campaign. Get creative, say thank you in your own unique way by offering back anything from expressions of gratitude for smaller contributions up to tangible sentimental gifts for larger contributions.
Once the campaign expires, all funds raised are transferred to the project creator’s account via PayPal using safe and secure, built-in online payment processing capabilities.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Last year Kickstarter, the pioneer of crowdfunding, had almost as much in contributions flow through its site to creative projects as the entire US National Endowment for the Arts.
FundWeaver is the only platform exclusively for First Nations, Metis and Inuit projects. Platforms typically build communities online, yet FundWeaver takes a unique approach in dedicating efforts to Aboriginal communities with existing strong social networks offline and long histories of community-based funding. FundWeaver builds on the collaborative culture by strengthening and leveraging existing relationships online in a hyper-social environment.
FundWeaver’s goal is to empower a segment of society scrutinized by providing a means to spotlight talent while increasing self-esteem through self-sufficiency.

Upon watching the launch and initial success of catarse.me, the first Brazilian crowdfunding platform that was launched by fellow class mates of co-founder Colin Lyons, the seed was planted. The idea for FundWeaver bloomed out of a conversation with long-time friend Mishon Sutherland as the implementation of a tool like FundWeaver could provide an easily accessible and collaborative solution to the long-standing issue around the division between innovators and entrepreneurs, and the rigid top-down funding system necessary to make those ideas a reality.
On the micro-level, FundWeaver's goal is to create an ecosystem that drives bottom up solutions, with the initial implementation of crowdfunding.
On the macro-level, FundWeaver's goal is to create a robust,self-sufficient national Aboriginal community that supports itself from within.
Launching earlier this year, FundWeaver has sparked the conversation around crowdfunding and the need for new methods of funding, given the national funding cuts that have impacted Aboriginal programs.
Thus far, we've had a couple of projects go live and raise money towards their ideas, and have a number of other people very interested in using FundWeaver to gather support for their ideas. We've seen exponential growth in our social networks, but require growing our online community and reach further, and build transparent partnerships with organizations interested in providing feeder capital to have the support system strong enough to fully support the projects we have in waiting.
With FundWeaver we hope to spark unity, collaboration and pride around future project ideas.
We seek to impact not only the project creators that raise awareness and funds through FundWeaver, but the community that comes together around the various ideas and the benefits they feel through their support.
We hope that in the next five years we provide solutions in addition to crowdfunding that have a meaningful impact on the way community members and organizations come together to support budding ideas and entrepreneurs.
FundWeaver is positioning itself slightly ahead of its time as many people are just becoming aware of crowdfunding and how it works. In addition, many Canadian Aboriginals still don't have regular access to the internet or credit cards to use FundWeaver's online payment system.
That said, infrastructure development of information and communication technologies are among the top priorities of community initiatives and policy makers. We are hoping to bring crowdfunding to that discussion and grow with these communities as they transition online.

We have a growing social network of Native Americans that have expressed interest in FundWeaver providing a basis for their American projects. While the tools are already in place to cater to these projects, we are focusing on Canada first, and would have to also deal with the legal implications of conducting business in the US.
When talking about the applications of crowdfunding you inevitably begin down the path of crowd technologies and their applications across all business sectors in general. Creative and abstract discussions are the standard not the exception and it is from that frame of mind when discussing Fundweaver as a 'sweet spot,' (the balance between technology, economics and psychology of the entrepreneur)that we are cautious to always discuss and imagine within a judgement-free zone without socio-economic barriers. No idea is left un-entertained as it is from the average person thinking larger than themselves and outside the box that collective growth becomes priority number one.
There is no hierarchy in our decision making processes. As we grow we take everyone along.
We could use mentorship and help in building our network of partnering organizations, and help in raising awareness of FundWeaver in communities. We are not interested in bringing on investors, as FundWeaver's mission is in its community impact and want to distance the success from any bottom-line measure.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Parenting is hard from time to time, but there is something inherently difficult when you are doing it all on your own. Finding enough hours in the day to work, maintain the home, cook, transport the kids to their activities, spend quality time with them and have enough money to pay all the bills is an everyday reality for these parents. Raising children alone can be lonely, isolating and wearisome. Even at the best of times, it is extremely stressful.
In 2006 there were 1.4 million single-parent families living in Canada; 175,160 in BC.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Single-parent families are considered to be a minority group and blending in with other traditional, two-parent families is awkward and uncomfortable for everyone concerned. Family dynamics between the two are quite different and therefore, it is imperative that the specific and unique needs of this group be acknowledged and addressed.
My solution is simple: to build relationship and create a community of people that share common values. Since the inception of the internet, the concept of community has become a less geographical limitation, as people can now gather virtually, regardless of their physical location. The Green Almond Club was created to build a healthy and vibrant membership-based community where like-minded people can share experiences and make each others’ lives easier through mutual support and connectedness. I believe that human beings are better together, and that the heart of community is found in the collective spirit of all those who belong.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
We can probably all agree that life is busy. And for the typical single-parent, who has little or no support from extended family, their workload is doubled.
Like all human beings, single-parents also have a need for relationship, connection and a sense of belonging. However, because much of our time is centered on meeting the needs of our children, maintaining our home and paying the bills, spare time is a very rare commodity. It is an ongoing challenge to find the time, much less the emotional energy, to seek outside resources and support. Attending a support group or evening workshop, much less getting out with a friend or going on a date, is near impossible.
Our model is simple; to provide relevant and applicable resources and support to these families, in the comfort of their own home. In essence, the Green Almond Club exists to provide:
1. Monthly newsletters that include relevant information, tips and ideas for day to day living.
2. Access to professional resources, such as a rich library of blogs, articles, videos and e-books.
3. Excellent quality web-based webinars and workshops that parents’ can access 24/7, when it is convenient for them.
4. Individual and group coaching sessions specifically tailored to address the unique challenges faced by these families.
5. A variety of local recreational activities and that meet members’ needs for community and relationship with other like-minded families.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
My peers are other professionals who provide a particular service and expertise. We collaborate regularly by sharing our resources and knowledge. Some of these professionals are family lawyers, health practitioners, counselors, child care professionals, financial advisors/brokers and other service professionals.
Currently, most services are being provided by either a Government program or the non-profit sector. They are focused on life-skills, parenting issues, resume-building and the like. This has resulted in a huge gap of services. Green Almond targets a distinct segment of the population; professional people in their mid thirties to late fifties. We are skilled and educated parents, who earn at least $40,000 a year, are home-owners and participate in our local community.

When I got married and decided to have a family, the last thing I ever imagined is that one day my husband would come to me saying, ''This marriage thing is not for me. It’s not you, it’s me''.
and so for 13 years now I have raised my two girls alone, without any family support. Life is good, but is has not been easy.
I have spent years searching out people and organizations where my girls and I could find commodore. Finding resources and a community, located under one umbrella has been an exhausting undertaking and unfortunately, I came up empty-handed.
Over the years I have met with countless men and women who share a similar story and desire more than anything to connect with like-minded people, just like me and my family.
So as time went on, I have simply got fed up. Last year I thought: ''Aha! I have the education, knowledge and personal experience, so I am just going to start my own company!'' And so, the Green Almond Club was born.
My goals are to:
1. Create awareness about the needs of single-parent families in my local community, and beyond.
2. I want to provide professional resources and information needed for these families in ordeer for them to thrive individually and as a whole community.
3. I want to see these families thrive, not just survive!
4. Become the Okanagan’s premier single-parent group for professionals.
To date, I received a lot of positive feedback from my current subscribers and members. Here are just a few testimonies that I have received:
''I sure wish I knew about your group when I was going through my divorce. I really could have used your services!'' Nancy
''Thank you Cyndee for making me feel so safe and accepted. For years I felt ashamed and embarrassed that I was a single mom and so I kept it a secret, as I didn't want people to know.'' Katie
''I am so glad I found this group! All of my friends are married and I have been desperate to find others who 'get it'. Heather
''I haven't been in a relationship for years. But I figure right now, my daughter is more important. It's tough being a dad cuz I don't always have the answers for my daughter.'' Chris
''It is so good to have someone to talk to who understands exactly what I am going through'' Julie
''No one else 'gets it', unless they live it themselves. I'm glad you get it, Cyndee''. Diane
Over the next five years, I project that:
1. A safe, judgement free community will have been established. People will want to join, simply because they heard of us through 'word of mouth'.

Even though it is 2012, single-parent families are still faced with an overwhelming lack of support, understanding and marginalization. We continue to battle negative stereotypes.
If I were to ask you to picture a used car salesman in your mind, it is likely you have developed a particular set of beliefs about him. The same is true for single-parents. Immediately people perceive us to behave in a certain way and live according to a particular set of rules or values. As a result, many people experience shame, embarrassment and sometimes judgement from those who don't fully understand. This is our biggest barrier.
In order to combat this, my goal is to provide local, up-scale social and educational events where people can learn, grow and connect in a non-threatening, safe way.

I work with like-minded professionals who offer services that are complimentary in nature. I work directly with professional organizers, nutritionists, counselors, childcare workers, etc. The alliances I have formed often work direectly with single parents. We are an excellent referral source for each other. I have established good working relationships with several local businesses and companies.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
The Green Almond Club targets a distinct market segment of the population; professional people in their mid thirties to late fifties in age.
In addition, we are also marketing to three geographical areas, North, South and Central Okanagan. There is a tremendous need in all three of these regions.
Once the Green Almond's name is established, it is my goal to expand with the Province of BC and beyond.
The Green Almond Club is virtually a 'Business in a Box', so to speak. We are primarily web-based and any social events that take place, occur at restaurants, conference centers and other local businesses. We might also meet at parks for family picnics and the theatre for family movies.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Calidad, Equidad.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Inexorably tied to Catalyst’s fortunes, Powell River is a community facing economic decline and the loss of services and jobs. Faced with a slowing economy, the community notes rising social problems like mental health and addictions, homelessness, family violence and, on the whole, a greater reliance on social programming at a time when these programs are at risk financially. The first Powell River Vital Signs report provides a portrait.(http://www.prvs.ca/portrait-of-our-community.html) Citizens have historically placed responsibility on business and political leadership, and social programs have relied on corporate charity. The community has been fractured in its responses. A lack of understanding between groups and individuals has resulted in stalled progress and disengagement.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Defining Diversity: Creating Community will shift mindsets and spark innovation by providing a two day educational experience developed and piloted by Vancouver Island University and the PR Diversity Initiative to 4 groups of 20 participants, representing Powell River's unique diversity. The course is designed around the award winning film with the same title. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-Jj4P5GE80) The course utilizes innovative teaching and learning strategies that support participants to forge collaborative relationships while they learn about Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) as a framework to explore their gifts and potential contributions. The course ends with open space activities intentionally designed to spark actions that contribute to social and economic change. This project continues to engage citizens over a 2 year period by inviting them to participate in action research measuring social impact and sustained change.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
The impressive results of the pilot offering of Defining Diversity: Creating Community in 2011 motivated a unique group of partners to work collaboratively for community change. The project brings together Vancouver Island University with PR Model Community Project for Persons with Disabilities, Tla'Amin Community Health, PR and District United Way, First Credit Union, Community Living BC, PR Regional Economic Development Society, the PR Diversity Initiative, PR Association for Community Living, PR Education Services Society, the PR Community Foundation, PR Employment Services Society, School District 47, Friends of Film Society of PR, CJMP Community Radio Society, and Skookum Food Provisioners' Co-op. The door remains open for new community supporters. These organizations are committed to: marketing the innovation and the opportunity with their respective constituents; sponsoring participation in the course deliveries to ensure diverse representation; assistance with the refinement, implementation and analysis of the community engaged action research phases; support to new social and economic ideas and activities that flow from the process; and promotion of the lessons learned and recommendations in our own and other communities.
Activities include four rounds of participant recruitment and program delivery followed by four cycles of community engaged research; a focus group and a survey. The project concludes with a learning circle. Photo documentation and use of social media will be included. An interim and final report will be written, presented and distributed.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
This project is complementary to local, provincial, national, and international projects utilizing education programs, multimedia, Asset Based Community Development, or community engaged research. However, the unique combination of strategies and the collaboration of community partners distinguish this project. The project is grounded in the learning of other innovative community developers but blazes a new trail.

The idea for the project emerged after a pilot offering of Defining Diversity, Creating Community in November 2011.The course is based on the award winning documentary film created by the PR Diversity Initiative and builds on John McKnight’s pioneering work in Powell River in the early 90's. Pilot participants reported changed relationships with one another, a new awareness of their own and each others’ gifts and talents, and increased, motivation to commit to specific actions that impact quality of life in Powell River for all citizens. They championed the course structure as a way to bring together the community’s diverse views to address our common goal – a healthy life for all community members in a sustainable Powell River. Alison Taplay saw the potential for greater social impact and sustainability through the addition of community engaged research component because of her previous success implementing a change project, Rediscovering Innovation Through Employee Engagement.
1. Increase the community's capacity, resilience, and sustainability by providing an innovative educational experience to diverse groups of citizens crafted to:
•Increase knowledge of asset based community development among a diverse citizens including members of our First Nation’s community.
•Increase self-esteem through personal awareness of unique gifts and contributions.
•Increase the value placed on the gifts and contributions of others, in particular those different from self.
2. Spark greater citizen contribution and involvement in local social and economic development through:
•Increased volunteerism and initiative.
•Increased capacity to work collaboratively towards a common purpose.
•A shift in perceptions of the roles and responsibilities of leaders and citizens.
The film has been screened at 7 film festivals in 3 countries and has won 2 awards and has been shown over 25 times in BC and Alberta.
The pilot educational program was delivered to a group of 18 in 2011, raising awareness about diversity and sparking new social and economic activity in Powell River. For example, a partnership among VIU/CJMP/PRDI emerged involving the implementation of new initiatives in Powell River, which helps all three organizations meet their mandates and support each other in doing so.
A formal evaluation completed by 14 participants gave high satisfaction ratings to their learning experience and the impact. Some comments were:
-It is so relevant. How we treat each other and ourselves impacts all other aspects of our lives
-It moves people towards hope. It's useful, practical, accessible information.
-Encourages connection between participants, relationship building
Participants have provided funds and support to this project.
Based on documented feedback from both the facilitated community dialogues based on the film and the pilot delivery of the two-day course, we anticipate:
1.Increased awareness of diversity and how we all unwittingly perpetuate conditions of exclusion
2.Increased capacity to collaborate across disciplinary and other social divides
3.Increased commitment to action towards creating an inclusive and sustainable community
4.Increased ability for this action to be effective in cultivating conditions that facilitate belonging
5.Increased avenues for citizens to contribute to meaningful change.
Even when committed, it can be difficult for citizens to find the time and resources to participate for two full days on their own. Having the support of our various partners ensures their employees and representatives are supported to take the time to engage fully; the collaborative approach of this project is critical to its success. Another potential barrier is the difficulty attracting new participants in order to best reflect the diversity of Powell River within this project. This can be overcome by 1) soliciting our partners to reach out to their various networks to support us in recruitment and 2) using social media to make our project visible and accessible to a wider range of participants.

Support comes from many organizations including: PR and District United Way; First Credit Union; SD 47; PR Education Services Society; PR Association for Community Living; PR Diversity Initiative; PR Regional Economic Development Society; PR Community Foundation; Community Living BC; PR Employment Program Society; Friends of Film Society of PR; and the Skookum Food Provisioners’ Cooperative.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
We anticipate replicating the project in municipalities within Vancouver Island University's region faced with similar challenges. Quantitative and qualitative data from this "scaling up" will provide evidence that this innovation has valuable social and economic impact. This evidence will create a compelling rationale for sustainable delivery. Our vision is that all citizens in the Vancouver Island University geographic region have access to the knowledge and experience incorporated in the program Defining Diversity: Creating Community.
1.Interdisciplinary collaboration and inter-agency partnerships enable limited resources to be maximized to their fullest potential.
2.The fact that there will be four offerings of the course means the ideas and practices it promotes will gather momentum in the community throughout the duration of the project, increasing impact over time.
3.The cycles of community engaged research will increase momentum and promote continuous learning cycles.
4.The inclusion of social media tools and community-based research enables community members to contribute to the development of the project, ensuring the work remains relevant and can adapt as needed.
5.VIU, the MCP, PRDI and Tla’Amin Community Health have mandates that align with the project’s asset-based community development approach.

Amar Desh Amar Gram (My Country My Village) is the first project of its kind that takes computers and web access to the lowest income group and empowers them with a possibility that was not ever previously available to them before. The project creates a virtual marketplace named as Amar Desh eSHOP for better economic opportunities
it takes the products from the poor to the poorest, producers all around villages of Bangladesh and then opens up national and international markets for them which otherwise is not available to them. Today fishermen from far off Mongla (south-west coastal district) are selling fish in the heart of Dhaka city, women sitting at home producing simple ‘handicrafts” are earning by selling their kathas (handicraft) all over Bangladesh and even abroad, farmers growing fresh vegetables are supplying to consumers and city markets directly. The journey does not end there, the centers that control this supply chain are controlled by youths of the local community.
THE ONLINE MARKET FOR RURAL COMMUNITY (AMAR DESH ESHOP) FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SOLVING THE FOOD CRISES:
Amar desh eshop directly links the farmers and all other producers of any locality (i.e. any village) to the customers across the country & the globe so that they receive their rightful profit. Due to The system would enable customers to get products at a reasonable price. (e.g. www.amardesheshop.com)
The system also creates equal employment opportunities for men and women ensuring increase in income. 7-9 individuals in rural area will be employed by each e-centre.
The system plays a crucial role in protecting interests of indigenous industries in rural areas by creating income opportunities of rural marginal people, small and handicraft industries and agro-based industry are encouraged in this system by ensuring utmost cooperation in the expansion of markets at home and abroad. A solution for reduction in rural-urban migration. If the victims are under the effect of climate change, it would not affect their livelihood as they have their own identity and virtual mall from where she can earn again even if she has lost everything. She can start earning again through her establishment in the virtual world which is recognized nationally and internationally.

Till date We have established 7 e-center with more than 5500 entrepreneurs. From each center we are serving local communities school and colleges providing websites and softwares build by the local e-center by the local youth, 834 above students being trained. 84000 local community peAmar Desh eShop (e-commerce platform) for Economic development
5500 entrepreneurs has been enlisted
Among them mostly are underprivileged women,Farmers ,Weavers ,Fishermen, Young entrepreneurs
Our e-centres sustainable models have enabled it to become a community of innovative entrepreneurs. From our some e-centres has given more than 3500 women a chance to be self employed and sell their handmade wonders aided by e-commerce, with no hidden charges. Our e- centres employ 25 women, some are over the age of 65 learning and teaching basic computer skills. Both men and women now have the chance through our centres to sell their artistic skills and open a new cultural market.
In the next 3 years if we can make more 64 centers in 64 districts of our country we can serve 768000 community members all our countries enterprenuers to give them a direct market access to trade both nation and international .Can actually train IT experts more than 8960 youths who can work as our Human Resource to manage the whole e-commerce platfrom. The next 64 centers will enable us to develop a network of centres to deliver services to every district but will also allow trade to flow between each district as well as to the capital city Dhaka.
Thus it will directly benefit both the Beneficiary rural producers and consumers who will purchase the products. Cross fertilization will happen.
We didn’t have e awareness in our country and During the initiative of the project, not only the rural people but also the urban clan was skeptical about the outcome. The challenges to create e-awareness among the villagers was an achievement .First barrier was there are villagers who had no access to computers in their life time .To train the youth and building a community around our e-center was another challenge still is a challenge. To manage such centers and to communicate to the village producers the aspects Human Resource Development (HRD) is also a big challenge for the project. Funding in the infrastructure, to set up centers in 64 districts is a big challenge for us .The traditional market system, middle man was always a stumbling block but our e-trading system is changing it all.

Farmers > local wholesale market , but without the middleman (broker) the farmers can't sell their products to the local wholesaler > The middle man plays a critical role , tricks the farmers to sell the vegetables at very low rate, and they determine the price of the vegetables for example BDT 2 > The middleman sells the product to the wholesaler adding up their margin with a high rate > Then the local whole saler send the vegetables to the major /districts wholesaler adding upp margins > Now retailer shop buy from the districts wholesaler with much more higher rate > then the retailer sells to the consumers at BDT 25 , which famers got the price of BDT 2.
But presently with our e-center
Farmers > to their local village e-center which is maintain by their local youth , they come with their any of the products, get register , took pictures of their products ,put their own price , for example now they sell BDT 10 which previously could sell only at BDT 2.
