Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are promoting adult education in Bangladesh:
In Bangladesh, there are now 11,400 reasons to treat poor rural women fairly. They are the fleet of “barefoot lawyers,” working all over the country to educate citizens, particularly women, about their rights.
Sharmin is a typical barefoot lawyer. A shy woman in her 30’s, Sharmin was married at age 14, despite the fact that child marriage is officially outlawed in the country. She applied for a loan from her village micro-credit organization to start a small handicraft business. The group, an NGO called BRAC agreed to make the loan if she agreed to take a free class in human rights and law.

Mobile Advisory Force for Advancing Technology in Rural Farming

Esta presentación se trata de
Discurso rápido
In order to ensure food security and to improve living standard of rural farming communities it is vital to improve productivity and build capacity through Innovative Mobile Extension Team so that the small farmers are able to withstand future climate change impacts and external economic shocks.
Problema
Despite structural changes to the economy agriculture remains a vital sector in Sri Lanka from Employment, Food Security, & Rural Development perspectives. 1/3 of workforce is employed in agri sector. 80% of farmers are small holders who own on average < 1 Ha. They lag behind in use of technology, hence on-farm productivity is low. This situation leads to high vulnerability of farming community for climate change and external economic shocks.
Solución
Uplifting living standard of small rural farmers can be done through improving productivity of their small plot of lands and building capacity to withstand impacts of climate change and external shocks through effective technology transfer by mobile Teams using new and innovative techniques. In the context of conventional approaches mainly by public sector are not effective enough, use of dedicated Team to stay in the selected villages for a predetermined period to identify technology gap, develop customized program, and disseminate has proved effective in making positive changes in the target sector. The team is equipped with IT facilities, teaching aids and provided with a transport facilities throughout to ensure efficient mobility.
Ejemplo
The Technology Transfer Team known as Rapid Agriculture Advisory Force (RAAF) who deployed as mobile extension team has made a significant impact on productivity and thereby improved living standards among target communities. The mobile team (RAAF) who stays with people for 3-4 weeks continuously ensures lasting impact. They rent a house in the village, gather primary survey data to identify specific technology transfer needs, develop customized programs to suit the need gap, and deliver using demonstrations, lectures, discussion sessions, field demonstrations, www access, Skype, laptops & multimedia projectors to ensure effective transfer of technology. Forming groups are encouraged to access technology on their own efficiently.
Impacto
The initiative has made a significant and lasting impact in the on-farm productivity as well as enhanced knowledge, skills and attitudes among small scale farmers in the rural villages in Sri Lanka where the RAAF Team operated. As the service is provided free of charge even the farmers who are economically deprived and disadvantaged are equal beneficiaries of the program.
An independent study conducted to asses the impact of RAAF activities in 2 villages of North Central Province of Sri Lanka by University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka revealed that the intervention caused 34% and 220% productivity improvement among Rice and Dairy farmers respectively in the villages. It is also reported 50% of respondents have increased knowledge, 25% improved skills and 15% changed attitudes towards agri operations.
The impact need to be magnified by scaling up the operation.
Mercado
The bridging knowledge gap and improving technology transfer among rural small farmers is primarily done by the public sector, mainly Department of Agriculture and also by Department of Livestock and other Research Institutes. They are well structured and have been in operation over a long period with experienced officers. These sometimes hinder the effectiveness due to less flexibility in terms of resource deployment and employee motivation.
The RAAF program is operated with access to latest communication technologies and results based performance evaluation to sustain officers' motivation.
Plan de Sustentabilidad
The RAAF Team operates non-profit basis to ensure accessibility of its services to all the segments of the rural farming community including most disadvantaged. Therefore the project obtains funds to cover infrastructure, HR, and operational cost from the Fund contributed by the business divisions of the CIC Agri Businesses (Pvt) Limited which is the leading Agri Business Firm in Sri Lanka. Rapid expansion requires external funding by donors.

Filo d'Argento (Silver Thread)
Describe your initiative
Silver Thread (Filo d’Argento) is a national toll free number that offers to the elderly companionship and concrete help by thousands of volunteers
Which of these fields of Active and Healthy Ageing are addressed by your initiative?
Assisted daily living, Independent living solutions, Social inclusion (intergenerational practice, work and volunteering).
If none of the above, answer here:
Please describe and explain the problem your initiative is trying to solve.
Third age today and tomorrow
Today in Italy there are over 11 millions people more than 65 years old: approximately one inhabitant in five. Three millions of them live in solitude. In 12 years the elderly will be 15 millions and in 2051 they will get 18 millions. In this situation, the risk of social exclusion and solitude is very high; Auser Silver Thread, through its volunteers, is engaged to help the elderly who live alone, through a firm net of relations allowing the old people to keep on living in their own houses; to make sure help and support in ordinary life; to give them friendship, to listen to them and to give the opportunity to participate in an active social life.
Please describe and explain the solution your initiative is implementing. What is innovative about your solution? What distinguishes your solution from other existing approaches to the problem?
The idea is quite simple: a person who needs relationships represents not only a need, but a resource too! Besides concrete help that volunteers give to the elderly who calls at Silver Thread, they make the same elderly who asked for help become part of the solution to their own problem. The elderly who ask for help are gradually involved in organisation's initiatives, where they are able to express theirselves and to link with other people aimed at playing an active role on a social and culture level by making the most of their specific experiences, skills and abilities. Many times they make theirselves be engaged as volunteers in several areas of activity such as social utility services, training and education, and international solidarity.
Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Please describe if and how your stakeholders (cooperation partners, funders, users, etc.) have been participating in defining the problem and developing the solution.
Always - when possible - Silver Thread works together with public institutions, to connect many part of civil society, services, non profit organisations to be able to offer the right answer to the needs of the elderly. By the calls received by the Silver Thread, Auser is able to give to local institutions and medias detailed national and local reports about needs and opportunities of the elderly.
Has your solution been tested in trials, experimentations, or pilot projects? If yes, please describe the process and outcome.
Silver Thread was activated on September 2002 and, since then, it never stopped to ring. In 2011 Silver Thread received almost 1 million calls. Its 20 thousands volunteers did more than 1.3 million services to more than 230 thousands different persons.

Please select the relationship between your solution and related solutions currently established in our society. Is your solution…
substitutive (your solutions is substituting existing solutions because they do not meet needs or solve the problem appropriately)
Please try to identify and describe competing solutions implemented by other organizations addressing the same problem as you are. What challenges do these competing solutions pose to your success or growth?
It is difficult to addres other competing solutions implemented by other organizations because Silver Thread, more than practical and social support, brings relationships to the elderly who call it. From the only point of view of social support, 92% of the users of the Silver Thread are still not included in any other public or private structured support program. 6% of them are followed by public social services and just 2% are followed also by other private organizations.
What barriers might hinder the success of your initiative? How do you plan to overcome them?
First point could be the lack of public and private fundings.
Second point could be the availability of vounteers, in a difficult economical and social context.
Third critical point is the difficult in linking all the resources and subjets at local level (i.e.: public services, civil society, non profit organizations, private organizations).
To tackle the first two points the main way could be the same, and it could be to increase activities and the number of people associated to Auser. The third point is connected with the participation of the Third Sector in decisional process at regional and local level.

The Need for your solution: What problem or challenge are you trying to solve?
Balochistan, a degraded province of Pakistan. It is the biggest province according to its area and has been a central issue point since the creation of Pakistan. It is well nourished by nature and full of natural resources but the issue is that there is no machinery and skilled individual to utilize them. in whole Balochistan there are only three(3) recognized universities for higher education, these three universities are far from Baloch areas and also lack in well established infrastructure and professional faculty.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
The solution of this issue is not to hard to crack, this can be solved by establishing more and more and better Educational institutes, So that every Baloch Student can get the fundamental right of getting education and can become a good asset to its community and state. As said by many thinkers"Education is the key to Success" and it can only bring a positive Change. Establishing Educational Institute and giving a platform to showcase their talent is the only solution.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities that are involved in your solution. Consider telling us a story about the solution in action and how it creates impact. For idea-stage pitches, consider providing a hypothetical example
Education is the basic step for revolution and change. By adopting this solution not only the individuals of Balochistan can get education but it can also affect the Economy and development of State as they can prove to be good assets later. The solution of all problems start from gaining Knowledge.
Just compare how life was back some 650 years ago to today.
The average life span back in the Middle Ages was only around 24 due to famine and disease. Since there was little interest in education and no interest science, there was no doctors to control the spread of diseases and as a result 25% of Europe's population died during a 4-year period (1347-1351) by the Black Plague.
Today, the average life is almost tripled (68). Due to better medical practices and better knowledge of science/ proper hygiene disease outbreaks like the one that occurred back in the 14th century, very seldom happens
Education has brought and will bring many changes it the entire world and to gain success in this world Education is the first step.
The Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem that you are addressing with your solution. And how does your proposed solution differ from or build on these approaches?
This issue has been addressed by many politicians and media reporters but no positive and innovative step has been taken yet. As a report in DAWN newspaper it says: "Besides, there is a severe shortage of secondary school teachers and science lecturers. Most schools and colleges are lacking in libraries which is a must. Schools and colleges are without any lab equipment. In fact, they are even without basic amenities such as safe drinking water, toilets and gymnasiums which are a must".
My solution will also cover these requirements, and give them a platform to showcase their talent.

I always dreamed and hope for the betterment of future. And i believe that we are the one who can change it. I found this change making opportunity and was so pleased that i got a chance to make a positive difference, through this i can see my dreams getting a stage to be fulfilled and bear fruits to lots of individuals of my Country.
Impact: What is the impact of your solution to date? Also describe the projected future impact. (If your solution is an idea you can just describe projected future impact.)
The impact caused by this solution will be very beneficial to students and people of Balochistan province.
By this they can become educated and self dependent citizen and contribute their knowledge for the development of the State and World. it can make positive changes to the economy of the Country and Rural development . Education is the basic, and if basic is strong then automatically if everything will go fine. i predict that this can bring a big positive change to the province of Balochistan.
Full Impact Potential: How do you plan on spreading your solution moving forward? (Please consider spread within New York City or beyond, policy reform, how you might get others to replicate/adopt your solution or other mechanisms)
Acquiring Education is a never ending process. This solution can be the first step for the development of the province and making people realizing their duties. As said by Nelson Mandela"Education is the biggest weapon which can bring change in the world" and this change will go on increasingly, to the betterment every time.

What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
1) To create a digital marketing campaign to reach parents and educators concerned with literacy achievement. We wish to develop a targeted campaign that convert impressions into subscriptions for our platform.
2) To expand to school districts nationally
3) To expand our content offering and become a known digital distribution channel for self published or traditionally published titles for kids, YA, and educational communities.
Need #1
Digital Marketing Strategy
Need #2
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
We want to start a digital marketing campaign in order to solicit online reading materials from authors. We think that this would be a great way to obtain more engaging content for students but at the same time allow us to reach more authors instead of going through publishing companies.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
We anticipate that support from American Express will be for two focused objectives. Our first objective is parent/teacher customer acquisition. Our second objective is hinged on developing a web/brand identity related to trust and digital distribution. We are looking to expand our operations nationally so that school districts and parents can more easily foster literacy in classrooms or homes.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
We have not since we are wrapping up product development and a study of our initial pilot. We have not worked with outside consultants before.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Sí
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Sí
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Sí
1.
Develop and craft sustainable digital marketing strategy (channels, acquisition cost, pricing by source, etc)
2.
Hone and sharpen targeted messaging related to marketing campaign objectives
3.
Imbue American Express skills into our team DNA. Successfully carry out a dedicated partnership.
Our first wave of impact is already underway. 8000 students across the 15 lowest performing schools in Detroit use Qlovi to foster literacy and meet daily reading goals. Students login to Qlovi for an average of 20 minutes per session. And weekly average users are totally at least 2000. The schools we are working with have experienced academic growth larger than existed before Qlovi was in place. A closer dissection of usage and academic achievement is under way.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
With the help of American Express, our team will seamlessly incorporate digital marketing skills across our organization. We admire the dedicated example and digital track record of American Express and think of no better partner for this very focused exercise. Reaching more parents/students with good marketing will directly translate into higher literacy outcomes across high-need and targeted communities. We are ready for the challenge and partnership to begin.

I watched a patient roll up the information his doctor had just given him and throw it in bin. He hadn't read it and when I quizzed him, he said he hated getting yards of reading material and he thought it was all rubbish. He liked information from his doctor whenever he wanted it. This gave birth to the idea of filming top doctors and nurses to give the very best health information 24/7

As the number of people across the world with long term conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease explodes, the need to self-manage becomes more acute. No health system in the world can sustain looking after such huge numbers of poeple unless they successfully manage their own conditions to some degree. They cannot do this without proper information. We knew, because of our senior journalist backgrounds at the BBC, that we could produce the very best audio and visual information and make it available for patients anywhere to benefit from. We have interviewed the country's leading doctors, nurses, podiatrists, dietitians and other health professionals. We have also interviewed patients who give their top tips for getting the best out of life. There are sixty films for both Diabetes and COPD with other condtions to follow. They are broken up in 2 to 5 minute chapters with several interviewees in each chapter. These films take the viewer on a journey through all aspects of their condition. There is goal setting, also quizzes and action points to promote behavioural change. The chat room encourages like minded people to form communities and also to enable health authorities to have dialogue with their own patients. The films are web based but available on tablet and mobile. There is also an audio app for those who prefer radio, only have access to mobile phones or like the portability this offers. We feel much of value of The Sound Doctor is in the quality of the interviewing and editing of the films and, of course, the calibre of those taking part.
There are films available on a variety of conditions, and there are numerous patient stories online but no one except The Sound Doctor has created a really comprehensive library of films on each condition which represents a proper systematic resource for patients. Nor are there films of the same quality. There is no equivalent of the audio app at all.
The Sound Doctor is a structured and inclusive journey that offers practical help for people at all stages whether they are newly diagnosed or have had their condition for several years. The library of films can be dipped into at any time while an introductory series of films provides a unique structured learning programme which includes motivational questions designed to encourage people to think about their own personal goals.
We are passionate about, and totally committed to, The Sound Doctor. Our priority is to maintain the highest editorial and production standards. Our aim is to help people get the best out of life with effective self-care. We are very experienced in tailoring information to people's needs. We are also small and therefore agile and flexible in our approach. We have gained high level support in the UK for our innovation since inception owing to the quality of our product and, I believe, our sincerity and enthusiasm about improving the quality of life for patients with long term conditions.
We have long experience of television and radio broadcasting at the highest national level in the UK and use this experience to create programmes that tell stories effectively and accessibly.
We are able to innovate because we are small and flexible, continue to learn from others and because we can see the benefits of responding to changing situations, research and opportuities. In the UK the market and the challenges faced by health care professionals are in constant flux. We are able to adapt to these changes by anticipating them and tailoring our products to meet new demands and maximise their usefulness. We are keen to diversify in order to reach new markets and meet patients' expectations. We are, for example, translating some of our core films to make them more widely accessible both in the UK and worldwide. In a fast-changing market we feel it's important to stay ahead of the competition by predicting change rather than waiting for it to happen.

A patient with a long term condition or conditions needs to self-manage to a far greater extent now than ever before. Unless they have effective information about how to do this, their task is extremely difficult. But it's clear that self-management is the absolute key to the long-term needs of the UK health system and could be adapted to fit other models of care worldwide. We aim to do this by giving patients the most helpful, relevant and practical information, tips and goal setting from the very best doctors, nurses and other health professionals. The intention is to improve the quality of a patient's life, improve their experience of their healthcare and, specifically, to reduce the number of avoidable hospital admissions and the number of GP consultations.

GPs, Practice Nurses and other health professionals give patients a Sound Doctor wallet which contains information about the product and a laminated card with an activation number on it. The patient logs in using that unique code to access The Sound Doctor site appropriate to their condition.
They watch nine core films which are interspersed with action points, goal setting questions and further information. After this a library of 60 further films is available for them to browse whenever they like. The films are 3-5 minutes long, clearly set out and categorised, and can be watched at people's own pace. Patients' stories are included to provide invaluable peer support. There is also a chat room so patients and health professionals can build up local and national communities.
¿Cuál es tu visión y objetivos generales?
Our vision is to create a library of audio-visual information to help patients get the best out of life with whatever their condition. The objective is to make the information the best available anywhere - accessible, understandable, relevant, practical and helpful. We intend this to be a unique and structured library of films covering a wide range of chronic and other conditions. Longer term we hope to follow on from our initial audio app to create other apps on health giving far flung places access to the best health information in the world. We see this as being potentially transformational in raising awareness of particular health issues and self-managing them.
¿Cuál es tu propuesta de valor?
If we prevent one avoidable hospital admission for a COPD exacerbation, we have saved the NHS over £2000. Prevent one heart attack and we save up to £5,000. The cost of The Sound Doctor to the NHS offers the potential for significant direct savings. We also expect to demonstrate that The Sound Doctor, by creating better-informed and better-motivated patients, will free up GP and practice time, allowing healthcare professionals to concentrate on other needs - for example strategic planning and personal development.
The films are licensed to client organisations on an annual basis with 2-3 year packages preferred.
Our customers are the National Commissioning Board, Clinical Commissioning Groups, and through them, GPs and practice nurses. We also have a market in Public Health through local authorities. Potentially, customers could include large retailers working on innovative initiatives with the Government to improve the nation's health.
¿Qué enfoques utilizas para llegar a ellos?
We have face to face meetings with National Commissioning Board members, CCG long term conditions leads and public health officials. We also attend conferences either to host a stand or as speakers. We network widely.
¿Cuáles son tus actividades principales?
As The Sound Doctor is a small company, we are involved in every aspect. We create the strategy and vision. We design and develop the Sound Doctor learning programmes, we research, film, edit and publish all material; we meet potential customers; we meet strategic and visionary thinkers in the health sphere, and we sell. Following sales, we also try to ensure a significant take up amongst patients in each region and we work with healthcare professionals in each area to achieve the best possible outcomes.
We aim to hold a bigger 'conversation' with all those using The Sound Doctor and to communicate with them regularly with updates and other reasons to keep going back to The Sound Doctor site.
¿Quiénes son tus pares y competidores? ¿Qué problemas podrían plantear esos jugadores para tu éxito o crecimiento?
There are films on health, of course, but none offer the patient journey with the range and quality of films and editing, with the calibre of experts which we offer. NHS Choices is a large and heavily used site with millions of unique users a month. There is film content but it is incoherent and doesn't lead the patient anywhere except to the end of the film they are watching. There is no structured audio-visual content.
Some US insurers and healthcare providers have created sites like Web MD but in scope and quality these are not at all similar. Our challenge is to be first and best at what we do. Through exceptionally high quality and standards, we will continue to work with the NHS on joint projects (the audio app for example) and build on our reputaiton.
Our challenge is primarily dealing with a 'new look' NHS with newly created CCGs and uncertainty within those new structures. These changes will take time to work through. We work with key strategists at a high level within the NHS to make sure we are addressing the right issues at the right time.
We also need to make sure the Sound Doctor is cost-effective in order that CCGs renew their subscriptions to the films for patients annually. We will achieve this by working closely with all clients and patients to ensure that the site achieves its aims and exceeds expectations.
Describe brevemente tu estrategia de crecimiento futura
Our growth strategy is to continue to create new audio and visual information packages on a wide range of conditions and sell those and existing packages to CCGs and to the Commissioning Board in the UK and to adapt these to sell abroad. We are already partnering with a company in India which provides innovations in primary health and wants to use The Sound Doctor to help their pioneering work.
We have developed and refined our product and we have proved the concept through sales. We know that patients like it and we know that health professionals like it. As it is web and app based it can grow easily and quickly. There are no extra manufacturing costs to be factored in and distribution costs are minimal. We have an archive of material and revenue from this will fund further development.
¿Cuáles son tus objetivos centrales de crecimiento?
We aim to increase our portfolio of health information products to cover a wide range of conditions affecting the majority of the population. We intend to build a substantial library of material and offer packages of information that will benefit people with co-morbidities. We intend to reach a wider audience by translating material for those for whom English is not the first language.
Within six months we will have created an audio-visual package of information on all aspects of cardiovascular disease including heart disease, stroke, hypertension and cholesterol. Within twelve months we will add extensive coverage of three further conditions. Discussions with key third sector organisations and health care professionals have begun with a view to planning and then filming, editing and posting information on all these conditions by April 2014. Within three years we expect to have a library of up to 500 films giving advice on a full range of long term conditions.
The Sound Doctor is being used in around 100 GP practices. More will come on stream this month. It is too early to be able to give absolute savings. All we can say at this stage is that patient satisfaction, as recorded on the online satisfaction surveys, is high for both conditions which exist currently (COPD and diabetes)
Anecdotal and focus group evidence is also good. The Sound Doctor allows patients permanent access to information they forget to remember or forget to ask in the heat of the GP consultation.
As mentioned above, we are using the patient satisfaction surveys. We are also using analytical tools to look at the number of people using the site and the amount of time they use it for.
I have email contact with some patients and ask them for feedback and suggestions which has been very helpful.
We have had expert patients looking at the site and we are working on two separate research projects at the moment - one in the North of England with 200 patients with COPD and one in Wiltshire which hasn't started yet, with a practice nurse research project on self management for patients and effective interventions.
It can work anywhere. We are translating some of our core material into Punjabi, Urdu, Gujarati and Bengali at the moment for use in the UK but we can film anywhere and distribute anywhere using our existing framework.
We hope that the majority of patients in the UK with long term conditions will have access to The Sound Doctor in the next three years.
All material gathered so far is ready for distribution and can be scaled-up easily and quickly. Future products will work to the templates already developed and, once completed, will easily scaleable.

Our business plan has allowed for expansion and growth to cover the library of long term conditions mentioned above. We are hoping to raise enough money to achieve this through new and existing private investors.
We are also generating income and aim to increase sales to £400,00 this financial year and increase that figure again next year. As the number of conditions increases, sales and revenue should increase in line. Revenue in this period will be directed back into development, evaluation and marketing.

S.O.S. Estudiante: Shrinking the gap between High school and University in Buenos Aires
What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
In Buenos Aires we have a public and free University with a six common subjects first year to almost all the careers, called "Ciclo Basico Comun" (C.B.C.) which have 65.000 new students each year and almost a half of them can't make it in one year. S.O.S. Estudiante is a virtual studying center, where students coming from High school can take online courses of the hardest subjects from the first university year. During a Skype call, the professor lectures from a Google docs the topics of the subject the student has chosen and solves doubts and questions. After the class has been finished, the student will be part of a Facebook group with all the rest of the students where they will find common exercises to solve it in a collaborative way.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
Our top three priorities in the next year are:
- To get visibility in the students audience and the university environment.
- To increase the number of involved students
- To build an education community
Need #1
Digital Marketing Strategy
Need #2
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
We need some help about how to introduce our project in the university world and the students audience. Specially in the first year of University, where students usually need more help. We know that Social media is the key to enter, but we don't know how we should start it. At this time we would like to increase "likers" in our Fan page on Facebook, we think that's a good option to introduce the project, but we don't know how to motivate the students to be in touch with us or how to find potential interested people about us.
At the same time, the positioning of our project on the web (outside social networks) it's a priority, but we would like to do it showing what's different in our idea and what kind of benefits could the students get.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
As a start up project, we need an overall support from American Express.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
At this moment, we are working hard to develop our idea the best way we can.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Sí
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Sí
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Sí
1.
More students completing the first year of university in one year.
2.
A big students community, studying through Facebook in a collaborative way.
3.
Fewer students giving up.
Students who have tried S.O.S. Estudiante have acquired a new vision of Skype or Facebook. They have realized that they can use these online tools not just for entertainment or communication, but as a learning tool.
While is too soon to talk about impacts, around 90% of the students who take lessons with S.O.S. Estudiante approve their exam. We believe that without any help, these students could never have completed C.B.C.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
Almost half of the total number of C.B.C. can't finish it in one year, and an important part of it, will give up in the next year. We think that S.O.S. Estudiante could help this critical students portion to complete this first year and keep studying.
We hope to build a community where students could share their doubts and members answer from different points of view. Also they could share their exam results to let the other members know about the final score. Thanks to this community, students would feel they are accompanied with others students during the whole learning process.

Job Training Innovation: Sharing our Story and Building our Presence
What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
The mission of Twin Cities RISE! (TCR!) is to provide employers with skilled workers, primarily men from communities of color, by training under- and unemployed adults for skilled jobs that pay a living wage of at least $20,000 annually plus benefits. TCR! helps those who face challenges to employment achieve long-term economic independence. This is accomplished through intensive work skills training that includes Personal Empowerment, coaching, classroom training, internships and employment placement.
In addition, TCR! is leading the way in outcomes-driven nonprofit models. Through a Pay for Performance contract with the State of Minnesota, TCR! meets benchmarks in exchange for funding.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
• Enhance Pay for Performance funding model. TCR! will remain performance-driven through the continuation and expansion of this model, for which TCR! is recognized as a national leader. A detailed ROI review shows that TCR!’s return to Minnesota over the life of the program has been more than $7 for every $1 invested, with a payback period of less than two years. This return comes in the form of income and sales taxes paid, eliminated medical/financial subsidies, and reduced recidivism in the criminal justice system. This consistent, stable funding source has the ability to extend to other nonprofits, foundations and funding sources that are dedicated to outcomes-based work.
• Drive program growth through our Allies Against Poverty strategy. We are currently building a strategic partnership strategy through collaboration with more than 100 other non-profits locally. In 2013, we will strengthen these relationships to increase capacity to serve low-income adults. Our goal is to build and sustain a series of flexible Alliances that leverage community partnerships and create innovative new service models.
• Implement Reentry Connect. In 2012, we received a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) for Reentry Connect, a new collaborative service model that TCR! is leading. This program is an innovative, first-of-its-kind national pilot that establishes a reentry hub for primarily female ex-offenders that includes comprehensive, integrated case management, Personal Empowerment, career planning, educational/training referrals, and support services. Reentry Connect will serve 250 participants through December, 2014.
Need #1
Message & Brand Strategy
Need #2
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
TCR! is a unique program, both locally and nationally. We provide program elements that no other job training programs provide, including Personal Empowerment training, one-on-one coaching, Pay for Performance funding, and market-driven employment placement. These allow us to achieve top-tier, unmatched results for our participants.
We have tracked these outcomes and understand our strengths, but now we want to more effectively communicate and market our program value to a broader audience. This will raise our national profile, thus increasing new funding and expansion opportunities.
Expert consultants from American Express will be valuable as we reach out to our stakeholders, including funders, government, employer partners, and media. We want to achieve clarity in our messaging and branding, enhance our marketing language and differentiate ourselves in the market. We hope these measures will equip us to:
• Raise our profile at a national level;
• Be seen as an expert in job training and Pay for Performance;
• Allow us to grow and scale;
• And market our participants to employers locally.
1.
Clear and quality communication. This is key to staying on the same page, ensuring efficiency and producing quality outcomes.
2.
Reciprocal accountability. This is an overall TCR! value – we will do our part and expect the same from our partners.
3.
A collaborative environment. We want to learn as much as possible, while also providing helpful guidance and insights.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Support from American Express will be focused on the organization as a whole, but with angles that can be used for various stakeholder groups. For example, we would like to develop brand strategy around Pay for Performance funding for our interactions with government and major funders. Language and branding around our market-based training strategy would be useful in our conversations with employer partners.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
We do focus on mission and brand language, but we have not used the services of outside consultants. All brand standards, positioning statements, and program language are developed internally by staff members.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Sí
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Sí
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Sí
1.
Positioning statements that build on our brand values and differentiate us from other job training programs.
2.
Marketing-based branding language targeted at government, employers and high-level donors.
3.
A refreshed look at mission and values, their relationship with our program offerings and how they should be expressed in public
Success at TCR! stands out from other job training programs locally and nationally. It is measured by our long-term job retention rate that exceeds 80% at 12 months (compared to 42% for our peer group); a change in our graduates’ income of $18,972, an increase of more than 300%; and a sharp drop in recidivism.
Our ROI also stands out. When low-income adults become self-sufficient, the entire community benefits because the burden on taxpayers is lessened. The Pay for Performance contract with the State of Minnesota contains a narrow definition of success in order to purposefully provide an incentive for TCR! to attain the best possible outcomes for participants. We meet those outcomes year after year, and have created taxpayer value of more than $39 million since 1997.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
With the expertise of American Express, we believe we can achieve a clearer and higher profile at a local and national level, positioning TCR! as a leader in both job training and innovative nonprofit funding methods. By fine-tuning the messages to our many stakeholders – from government entities to local employers to donors – doors could open for more funding and scaling opportunities. We know we have the program innovation and strong outcomes to stand out; assistance in articulating and differentiating ourselves will be crucial to taking the next step nationally.

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
With the growing demand/requirement for green in design and construction, the building industry is experiencing challenges finding a qualified workforce. This bottleneck is due to a lack of entry-level green project experience available for professionals and students.
Thus, BOULD partners with community projects (ie a Habitat for Humanity home) and transforms it into a hands-on green building education experience for developing professionals and students. We connect a cohort of emerging architects, engineers, and builders seeking entry-level access to a local green project to capture that difficult to find green building experience -- while also building green, affordable homes for low-income families!
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
Our company’s top three priorities are to:
1) Establish partnerships with schools, workforce centers, and building industry firms to develop a consistent pipeline of participants to receive our crucial green building training.
2) Expand our programming to 10 new major municipalities, serving 800 new students and supporting 100 new affordable homes.
3) Continue building new programming and piloting new delivery methods (online, condensed) .

Peer Benchmarking Analysis
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
BOULD is currently transitioning from a direct sales model -- to a partnership model with schools, universities, and businesses. Historically, the programming has be sold directly to consumers, interested in filling their professional "experience gap." This model was tough, given the amount of effort it took to attract, then sell each individual consumer. Thus moving forward, BOULD is developing a partnership model to work directly with major universities and community colleges to embed this crucial programming into undergraduate education. This route will streamline our operations and revenue cycle -- in that, we will be working with only one payment agent (the school) and we can anticipate a consistent crop of committed participants. We're currently exploring the structure of those relationships with 5 schools across 2 states -- and constantly learning about how to effectively navigate school/university relationships.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
The support will be targeted on how BOULD navigates partnerships with schools/workforce centers/veterans/local governments to source program participants.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
BOULD has worked with other social entrepreneurial accelerators to help refine our business model. However, we have never specifically tried to tackle this problem with a group of consultants. We have tried to approach these different groups with our internal team, but have had very little success to formalize a partnership.

225 Professionals graduated. We're focused equipping the next generation building professional with the skills and experience required to tackle the environmental challenges of today. Down the line, we're aiming build up a job placement pipeline -- and measure jobs created -- but presently, we're laser focused on building a better-trained and qualified work force. By 2015, we plan to have trained 800 professionals.
27 Affordable green Homes built. Each of the projects we transform into our "learning laboratories," ultimately becomes an affordable home for a low-income family. And, because we take additional green steps and have support from program participants -- these homes are incredibly affordable and environmentally friendly. By 2015, we plan to have supported 150 homes.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
BOULD impact could double with the help and support of this program. Once we are able to establish and build out long lasting partnerships with institutions, we believe we can train 1,600 students and build over 300 LEED homes for low-income families by the end of 2014.

By focusing on students’ deficits rather than building on students’ strengths, the predictive values of race, class, gender and unique abilities on student achievement continue to marginalize too many students. At QED, we disrupt this deficit paradigm through our commitment to four guiding principles: 1. We are all learners; 2. Learning changes lives; 3. Learning needs to happen in different ways; and 4.
What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
Learning empowers us. We build a bridge between research and student agency through the creation of digital tools, resources and professional development for learners of all ages. Our programs change the conversation--locally and nationally--between students, educators, parents, and policy makers, about understanding and applying the science of learning to the experience of learners.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
Over the next year, QED will:
1. Release the next version of our web app – Learner Sketch Tool (LST) – to students, educators, schools and districts.
2. Develop and implement rebranding strategy / marketing outreach related to our mission, core initiatives and related assets.
3. Create demand for the LST in classrooms, schools, and districts through both traditional education networks and emerging social networks, though, primarily through our professional development network.
Need #1
Message & Brand Strategy
Need #2
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
QED provides a range of services including tools and resources that support student-centered learning, teacher and leader professional development programs, and strategic consulting for educators inside and outside of schools – wherever learning happens. Our advocacy work builds partnerships, cultivates relationships with policy makers at local, state, and national levels, and develops content to help shape national conversations. We are not easily categorized as “professional development providers” or “consultants” or “advocacy group.” “Action Tank” might be the best descriptor. Last year, we acquired the significant intellectual property and digital assets of All Kinds of Minds (AKOM), increasing our visibility on the national stage. While we have internally aligned our various initiatives under our Transformational Change Model (TCM) and our Theory of Change (ToC), we need to test that brand and develop a clear communication and marketing strategy to employ across our initiatives. In AKOM we have acquired a brand that has a mixed history. We want to build on the positive aspects of the legacy to create a new focus on mind, brain, and education science.
1.
Our partners share our belief that every student is a learner with unique strengths and affinities.
2.
We share with our partners respect for each other’s strengths – acknowledging that we achieve more together than we do alone.
3.
The partnership places a high value on collaboration & shares the belief that technology can amplify the power of the work.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Support from American Express will enable us to develop clear marketing and communication messages for our whole organization. Clarifying our branding and messaging will help us build partnerships, increase demand for student-centered work and communicate our work to policy-makers, thought-leaders, funders, and educators. High impact marketing will help actualize positive change for all students, especially those who have been marginalized by race, class, language, and unique abilities, bringing about a larger scale of impact where it matters most – in the lives of students.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
Internally, we have engaged in a number of conversations about aligning the brands of our initiatives to reflect their alignment with our Transformational Change Model and Theory of Change. Additional informal conversations with our network groups reveal their support in bringing about brand clarity. Though we have been focusing on investigating branding, we have not hired experts, and we ourselves have limited expertise in the field of branding and marketing.

By disrupting the predictive values of race, class, gender, language, and unique abilities we impact students, teachers, parents, and education leaders . AKOM trained 50K+ educators, supported 20 Professional Development Providers across the nation, and named 35 “Schools of Distinction.” These professionals have worked with over 1 million students. QED now directs this work. QED’s Learner Sketch Tool has been used by over 15K people, and has undergone a research pilot with over 700 students in 15 different institutions. Our other initiatives, Faces of Learning and Five Freedoms Project have engaged thousands of educators in collaborative, capacity-building digital communities. Schools, organizations, and policy-makers at local, state, and national levels employ our TCM.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
We see ourselves as having the following impact:
1. The application & infusion of our Theory of Change, coupled with tools & resources from our Transformational Change Model (TCM), will disrupt the predictive qualities of race, class, gender, language & unique abilities.
2. We will fuel change in the broader conversation about how everyone can learn.
3. We will increase collaboration among others who want to transform student agency.
Our tools & resources will bridge the gap between policy, research on the science of learning & students’ experiences.
With the support of American Express, we seek to transform the current perception of learner diversity and inspire adoption of our TCM to both inform and improve the design and delivery of learning experiences for all students.

Service leadership is the key word for me to define an intrapreneur. I am also very keen on sustainability issues. Because of my curiosity, I wrote a book about ‘Sustainability and New Job Models in Turkey’ in Turkish. The book will be published soon. To be a channel for people and to design new systems in terms of providing new job opportunities are main motivations in my life approach.

Idea (estás listo para lanzarla)
Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
Cittaslow (Slow city) has been expanded throughout the world since 1999 and the concept was born in Italy. There are about more than a set of 50 goals and principles in terms of promoting cultural diversity and uniqueness of individual cities, protecting the environment, making life better for everyone living in an urban environment. Eight regions have participated in this movement in Turkey so far. The business world can have advantage of making contributions into these towns in 'win-win' concept. One of the advantage is for employees. To strengthen loyalty of employee to the organization and to evaluate the performance of employee will be required to have innovative actions in a wide thinking way.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
The bank I have worked for can enable employees as ‘giver’ or ‘receiver’ to participate in the services offered by the slow towns. Accordingly, these participations can create different social climate in the organization in order to rise awareness of the concept ‘slow city’ and persuade employees in a natural way to take place in volunteer actions for slow towns. The solution is to establish a network in the organization which can provide employees to search all services offered by slow towns. As examples, receiving a service from the slow town can be ‘preferring to stay in a guest house in an organic farm’ and giving a service to the slow town can be ‘an employee’s child might want to work in the organic farm on a holiday’. At the same time, while employees have fun as to learn many things via the organizational network, the outputs of these actions could be inputs into the performance management system of the bank.
The bank will start to use new types of motivation tools for the personal growth of employees and will enable their children to receive benefits of activities of 'slow towns'.
Regarding improving performance management system, a bonus system can be set within the network of the organization. The bank would give initial bonus to each employee registering to this network. For example, 500 units are freely loaded into the virtual accounts of each employee by the bank. 1 unit could be equal to 1 Turkish Liras. This system resembles ‘time banking’ pattern which is a reciprocal service exchange that uses units of time as currency. However, the units in the proposed bonus system can be converted into money if an employee want to use his or her own units as for example- having a holiday in one of the slow towns.
If the initial units have not been used by employee, her/his units would be decreased in the middle of the year to the half of the initial units. The purpose of the rule is for supporting to vitalize a regular reciprocity flow of receiving and giving in the network. Then, the staff having initial units in the beginning of the year can use these units as receiving a service from slow town and also can raise the units as giving a service to slow town. Furthermore, the children of the employees can take place in the network. The children of the employees also obtain units.
The units gained by employee can be transformed to performance management system of the organization in order to add into his/her performance scores.
It would be very good if the bonus system for the performance management system is copied by other organizations.

When I prepared a book about ‘Sustainability and New Job Models in Turkey’, I interviewed with the mayor of the first slow town (Seferihisar) in Turkey. He mentioned that the slow towns were a free-thought zones to implement new ideas. I visited the first slow town and I saw going-on changes in this region. I have had inspiration after the visit.
Furthermore, I interviewed with founder of a head hunter company. He emphasized that the new type of firms should consider the young generations of the employees. I have seen a link between the corporate systems and slow towns that the internal structures of the organizations can be re-built, at the same time, staff enjoy to get benefit of the services of slow towns. Beside this, the children of the staff in the organization can use the bank’s ‘citta slow’ network. Thus, they can start to understand the importance of reciprocity services at young ages.
It is still just a proposal.
New models to assess the performances of staff will emerge in the organizations. The children of the staff also will be included into the system. Accordingly, the awareness of ‘citta slow’ will start to be well known by public.
Implementing a new concept into the organizations will take a time and effort. Therefore, the solution can be monitored in the first phase within limited departments of the organization. Then, it will be widened. Some campaigns in the organization needs to be done in order to explain the benefits of reciprocity services and the mentality of ‘slow cities’ to whole staff.

Cooking with Mama aims to empower unemployed and underemployed women, who are incredible home cooks, to reach their highest potential through teaching cooking classes in the community. In today’s economic climate many women are struggling. U.K. statistics show that in 2011, 1.12 million women were unemployed, with the 50-65 age range disproportionately affected. While women’s circumstances vary widely, many have extensive culinary experience gained at home. Cooking with Mama hopes to demonstrate the value of these skills by providing training and opportunities for these women to lead cooking classes in the community.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
The unemployed often struggle to gain the experience needed to re-enter the labour force. For example, women who have focused on raising families may lack professional experience, and those who have lost jobs can find it hard to enter another sector. We offer women who are in these circumstances, and who love to cook, an opportunity to lead a cookery class. We see this as a tool to gain leadership experience, develop communication skills, grow confidence, and begin to build a distinctive CV. By developing their confidence and work-readiness skills, we aim to empower participating women to reach their highest potential.
We also offer an experience boost for those seeking to begin their journey into employment in the food industry. We are developing partnerships with restaurants and caterers with the eventual goal of offering women exit opportunities into the cooking trade.
We also aim to reinvest our profits through microloans to invest in the culinary dreams of our mamas.
Cooking with Mama is the only culinary school of its kind which works with unemployed or underemployed women to lead its cooking classes. Class participants are able to experience a culture through its food by learning our mamas' recipes, which have typically only been passed through family generations. We offers a creative and safe environment to bring the community together through food, develop cultural understanding, and support skills development for unemployed women.
We hosts "Mama Days" as training programs for our participating women every other month and prior to them teaching their own class. Skills development training is focused on confidence, public speaking, budgeting, and time management. We believe these key skills are critical to teaching a cooking class and can be applied in other facets of her life. We work with each Mama to design her menu according to a budget, source the ingredients, structure her class timing, and achieve her personal goals of each class.
Cooking With Mama hosts its 2.5 hour cooking classes in rental kitchens in London. We have held six pilots for both guest classes and corporate events of about 15-20 people each, so far featuring Indian and Brazilian dishes. Mamas demonstrate each dish before they are replicated by class participants. Mamas share not only their cooking, but also share their stories and traditions behind each recipe. Participants are charged for attending classes, and this money is used to partially fund class expenses (kitchen rental, ingredients, etc) and a payment for the mama.
The Mamas who have led our classes say the experience has been helpful in building confidence and allowing them to interact with people they would not have otherwise. They have been able to develop skills through the training and have built a community with other women and individuals in the culinary trade. We are working with other restaurant and catering organisations in London to provide further exit opportunities for these women in the culinary space.
Cooking with Mama offers an experience like no other cookery school – an opportunity to learn about food preparation and tradition from a woman who has mastered her own culture’s home cooking. While other cookery schools offer classes with trained chefs, we give participants the same cooking skills while also re-creating that special feeling of home cooking, conjuring up nostalgic memories of family gatherings and holidays. It’s the experience that sets us apart. Our competitors are other cooking schools in London - from at-home lessons to professional culinary schools. There are currently no other cooking schools working with unemployed women or untrained chefs. However, if a similar idea arises, our first mover advantage has been set through established relationships in the industry.

Jennifer is a self-proclaimed foodie – she enjoys experiencing new cuisines from around the globe, trying new recipes, and taking cooking classes whenever she’s on holidays in a new city. After she moved from Canada to the UK, she fell sick and wished her mum was around to cook her delicious soups. Except her mum was living on the other side of the world, Jennifer didn’t know the recipe, and she didn’t even know any other mums in London to call upon for cooking help. Then it dawned on her – What if she could learn cooking from someone else’s mum? What if she could learn different types of ethnic recipes and cooking skills from different mums throughout London? And What if she could use food to empower unemployed women and to gain new skills? That’s when Cooking With Mama was born!
To date Cooking With Mama has held six cooking classes for a total of 120 participants. Therefore, we have been able to provide 120 individuals with the opportunity to learn a culture through its cooking classes and develop their home cooking skills.
More importantly, these classes were taught by three women. Through our pre- and post-class surveys and discussions, these women have noted an increase in their confidence, public speaking, budgeting, and time management, Over the past four months we have worked with six women through our "Mama Days" (i.e. training and focus groups) to explain our program and provide them with the necessary skills for leading their own cooking class. Our statistics show that we are achieving our impact of providing these women with confidence and work-readiness skills.
Our statistics also prove that this idea can be replicated in other countries. We are currently working on developing chapters in Berlin and New York through interested volunteers.
We at Cooking with Mama are dreaming big. While cookery classes are our core activity, we want to expand our offering and impact, while remaining sustainable. We are keen to begin selling supplementary products at our classes – including spice kits, aprons and cookbooks. Another long-term goal is to set up a fund to provide microloans to our Mamas, so that they can pursue their own culinary dreams, such as to run a stall at a food market, to attend culinary certification classes at a local college, or to develop her own catering service. Another goal is expand globally - we have had interest in expanding the idea in NYC, Berlin, Shanghai and Toronto. We see these ideas ways to remain a sustainable venture, while providing maximum benefit to the women.
As a social enterprise one key barrier to success is understanding how to achieve our social mission while remaining profitable. We are currently addressing this barrier by reviewing our business strategy in understanding how to lower our largest cost (kitchen rentals), increase profits by looking into different customer groups, and applying for grant funding to cover specific costs related to our venture (i.e. fees paid to the women for teaching cooking classes).
Another barrier to success is understanding how to brand and market our venture to the public. Through our pilot phase we know that we have a strong service - now we need to determine a way to communicate our value proposition to our customer base. We are currently working with marketing experts to address this issue.
Cooking With Mama has adopted a sustainable business model where class participants pay a fee for each cooking class attended. This money is then reinvested back into the venture - with the majority covering the rental costs of the kitchen space, providing compensation to the mama for leading the cooking class, and covering the raw ingredients. A small portion of this money is then reinvested into the growth of the entire organisation. In the future, we plan to expand our profits through cooking products (i.e. spice kits), recipe books, and catering.
Cooking With Mama is an entirely volunteer-run organisation. It's lead by two directors, Jennifer and Amanda, who are also supported by a volunteer team assisting in areas such as mama recruitment, administration, and event planning.
In addition to its volunteers, the organisation reaches out to its four advisers (through the Emerge Venture Lab) who have experience in social entrepreneurship. It also reaches out to mentors and friends who work/volunteer in food-related industries, social entreprises, and community groups. This has been useful such as receiving tax or legal advice upon company setup, or attending a marketing and branding brainstorm held by marketing professionals in London.
To start, we invested our own funds and also received a £2000 grant to help in the pilot phase,
Our long term funding strategy is three-fold:
1. We plan to increase our profits through our cooking classes. Having piloted different classes and developed a strong model for our mama training program and cooking class delivery, we are now looking to better cater our classes towards different customer groups - for individual, group and corporate classes. We are currently undergoing strategic planning for our marketing and branding to better communicate our venture and its mission.
2. We plan to develop partnerships with groups such as supermarkets and kitchen spaces to reduce our costs of hosting classes.
3. We are applying for grants to drive our growth. This funding will be used to help test different cooking class ideas, expand class offerings, and develop our mama training programs.

In addition to its volunteers, advisors and mentors in our internal resources, Cooking With Mama relies on its partnerships with culinary schools and community centres where its rents its kitchen space, relies on other community groups which support womens unemployment to reach out to potential mamas, and relies on its social entreprise community to help spread the word about our venture in their personal networks. This is important to us and word of mouth is our best advert.
¿Qué apoyo interno has tenido para tu proyecto? Qué tipos de retrocesos has sufrido?
Cooking With Mama has received support from two organisations:
1. The Emerge Venture Lab is a 12-month accelerator program which supports new or early stage social entreprises. Through this program we have received training on how to develop our venture from an idea into its current pilot phase. We have also received mentorship through various volunteer advisors from the startup community.
2. The Royal Society of Arts has granted us £2000 to assist with our pilot phase.

Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
In the past school year, the total number of students that graduated from Nigeria’s high schools totaled about 1,500,000 students. However the capacity of the students who could be admitted in Nigerian schools totaled about 350,000. The estimate of the number of students who are expected to study outside Nigeria was put at about 250,000. This leaves a gap of about 900,000 students who will need to gain admissions. Our research shows that over 200,000 are qualified and can afford the education. This research also shows that there are another 150,000 who are qualified but cannot adequately afford higher education.
These figures have accumulated over the past 10 years resulting in over 7 million Nigerian youths who are trapped between High Schools and Universities.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
We have created Beni American University, Africa's first Hybrid university that combines the uniqueness and flexibility of online learning with the rigorous curriculum of on-campus learning to train students both locally and regionally.

Africa is at the cross roads of innovation, growth and opportunities. We have created a unique institution that looks at these three points and uniquely adapts to grow within the sphere.
BAU focuses on student innovation and entrepreneurship that provides students with the capacity to turn their ideas into viable businesses as well as helping them source the finances to grow.
Our Hybrid model allows us to grow continuously and accommodate more students without strain.
Joining the Institution:
We are admit students from all background who are qualified based on our standards which includes equality for women and girls. Students are then provided with free learning support tools such as tablet computers, internet access and library access. The students will be taken through our online learning training before they start their degree or professional programs.
Our classes typically take place online through our learning platform. Students receive their course schedules and log on to the platform at the designated times and join other students and their instructors in our unique virtual classrooms. Student engagement in the learning process remains a key aspect of our teaching and learning practice.
Tests and Quizzes, Discussions and Forums take place online. However final examinations are physical
After Completion from our university
Entrepreneurship Programs: Our students will take a 12 week bootcamp program with our partner incubators, accelerators and center of entrepreneurship. They will be grouped in 5’s to create business solutions out of ideas that can be implemented in the market. We will invest in the projects and create mentorship
Degree Completion Program: Our students who wish to move on to our partner universities to complete their undergraduate degree programs can do so with little or no barrier. We have created a direct entry system into these universities of choice to allow our students enjoy the highest preference.
Graduation: Our students may also graduate with their BAU awarded degrees and diplomas

Nigerian Universities
Private Universities: We provide affordable and more flexible alternatives to the learning offered.
Government Universities: We provide a quality specific and program focused alternative
International Universities
We are a local university with a global perspective. Our students do not need to accrue expensive living and travel expenses to join the university.
Open Education Initiatives
Our key differentiation from open initiatives come from the local support we provide for our students (tablet/PCs, internet access, learning zones, mini campuses) in Nigeria which no one else is doing.
We are also a fully recognized institution that can award certificates, degrees and diplomas. We provide physical/local tests through our testing centers across Nigeria.

After creating and successfully growing global educational social network – Students Circle in 2010, I realized from the inputs and conversations with the students who signed up to the network to access free learning resources from over 200 global universities needed more. Upon a closer look, I realized that most of the students from the West African region didnt just need another free course resource, they also needed to be tested and awarded a form of certificate to show for it.
Taking a trip to Nigeria, I conducted a survey to find out the reason for this. Upon the conclusion of the survey, the results were glaring. There was an obvious gap in the higher education provisioning in that region. Students were not being admitted because there were no free capacity schools.
Looking back at the success of Students Circle Network and working with a network of global educators and mentors, I decided to lay the foundation for a university that will overcome the prevalent challenges

Pilot Student Program
Date: 1st April 2012 – 20th April 2012
Details: We offered a free Entrepreneurship and Innovation short program to over 100 students within Nigeria. At the completion of this program, we continued following up with the students, providing mentoring and support and by December 2012, 3 had successfully moved from Idea to Solution on their businesses. They credit the program we offered them and our post program support for their success.
This gave us the opportunity to measure the acceptance, usability and viability of our solutions.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program
In December 2012, we started offering free a full scale Entrepreneurship and Innovation program to university students at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife who are studying Computer Science and are members of the Paradigm Initiative TENT Program.
We are already in the process of reviewing business plans from some of these students and staging an Business competition for them
1. Kicking off our Degree Programs by June 2013 with an estimated 200 students.
2. Graduating a minimum of 2500 students from our professional programs.
3. Investing and sourcing finance for a minimum of 10 student project teams
4. Graduating our inaugural class in exactly 3 years.
5. Include more Market / Industry specific Entrepreneurship Programs in our offering such as Entrepreneurship and Innovation Clean Energy, Agriculture and more
6. Grow our degree program disciplines to at least 10 programs.
7. Advance our usage of technology and the provision of learning to the population that do not have access to the internet but do have access to normal mobile phones through SMS.
8. As a partner to several international universities, BAU will provide cross campus opportunities.
Government Policies: as at the time we started, there were no regulations, policies and guidelines for online institutions let alone our unique hybrid model in Nigeria. However we have worked closely with the appropriate authorities over the past one year to institute proceedings to create these policies and implement them.
Public Weariness:Our unique model ensures that students are tested like they would be if they were in regular universities. This combined with constant awareness programs will create more acceptance. Our research shows that the students on their own are ready to take on online learning
Employability: We are partnering with recognized organizations that have pledged to accept our students for internship programs. This is showing that employers do not mind the model

Beni American University is a self sustaining project that can run on the tuition of students who enroll. Our model allows us to spend on resources in equal proportions to the number of students we have currently enrolled.
The tuition of students cover every aspect of the learning process, logistics and maintenance of the institution. We have worked extensively to find the middle ground between affordability and viability to offer programs that the students can afford and at the same time, can cover for their learning costs and more.
Our free programs are supported by Students Circle Network and our instructors are professors from already established institutions who are currently in their current employment but take out a compulsory number of hours per week to teach and assess students.
Our Degree programs are directly funded by our students and the instructors are professors who are under our employ and are paid equivalent to the number of students they teach and assess with specific limits to the number they can have in each class.
The rest of the BAU team are spread across the globe with their unique strengths and knowledge employed when needed and when they are serving their roles. Each team member commits are certain amount of time every week to focus on this project while a few of us work full time.

Tuition: Our student tuition plan will continue to remain a revenue stream for the institution. With every year comes an estimated growth in the number of students and this will result in increased revenue
Internal Sales: Provision of student merchandise and other related services will be a source of revenue for the institution.
Administrative Fees: Students will be required to pay certain standard administrative fees and registration figures that are common with institutions of higher learning. This also remain relative to the number of admitted students.
Grants: As a supporting plan to our other revenue streams, we will eventually apply for grants that support institutions of higher learning both locally and internationally.

We are three young women with background from voluntary work, social work, business and marketing. Our skills and qualities are quite different from one and another, and this is what makes us a adequat and good team.
We are currently taking a master within entrepreneurship and innovation, and our ability to work and communicate as a team has been tested several times.
Considering that we are a business in the nascent phase it is confiding that we have seen eachothers strengths and weaknesses. We know when to support and when to enchourage eachother, and this we consider as an advantage.
A good intrapreneur is one that can create new ideas and make positive changes from within the business. We are in the start up phase, and it is part of our vision to see change in the women that will work within our business. In order to do so we will be working "on the ground" with the business staff as a whole. It is here will find the dynamo for good ideas. Motivation and encouragement of the women we work with is what will make us succeede as an intrapreneural business. Our utter most important personality trait is therefor the ability to show emapthy.
Communication amongst our colleagues is key to pick up the good ideas for viablity of our bottom line.

Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
Since 2010 we have been working alongside a volunteer organisation in Livingstone, Zambia, whose purpose is to eliminate prostitution. Kwenuha offer a variety of programs with the goal of empowering former sex workers, as well as vocational training, where prospective work or self-employment is the desired outcome.
However, over the years it has proven to be difficult to reach this objective. Stigma and high unemployment rates are the leading factors that prevent Kwenuhas members in obtaining future employment.
This also creates a great challange for the organisation. If the women can't move forward the organisation will not have staff to help others "off the streets", and the organisation will not be able to create positive ripple effect.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
We are starting up a social enterprise in Livingstone, where we will create and sell high quality leather bags for the concious consumer under the brand WayaWaya.
As a social entrepreneurial organization our vision is to “fulfill dreams and strengthen the individual through sustainable work”. We are establishing a sewing factory in Livingstone, Zambia. This will operate as an extended job prospect for vulnerable women, and will be a possibility for them to engage in an ordinary work environment. The fashionable leather bags that we manufacture will be exported internationally under the brand WayaWaya.
Over the past years the fashion industry has been critizised for the lack of collaboration along the value chain. The demand has created poor working conditions, and there is need for change. It is not only the manufacturers wrong-doing, but a value chain as a whole. High demand for quick delivery gives little room for flexibility and change. By being in charge of designing, manufacturing and sales we are shortening the value chain and improving transparency.
We are collaborating with several NGOs in Zambia who work on a basic level solving emergent social problems. Our organization will be the next step for the people involved. We are offering proper work with good salaries and uplifting work conditions.
We believe in transparency and as we, unlike most other fashion brands, are in control of our own production, we have a unique position. We strive to maintain our social and ethical value throughout the whole value chain, and partner only with suppliers who can meet our requirements. Local suppliers are preferred.
We will strive to uplift our employees through skills training, respect, empowerment, motivation and close and personal follow-up of each individual. Workdays will be no longer than 8 hours, 5 days a week, and wages will be on a good Zambian level with possibilities for a bonus.
We will continuously scale our production based on the market demand. More products sold, means more people employed. We will continuously search for more NGO partners to recruit from. When we have a good working production model, we want to scale to other African countries to scale our social impact.
Our brand story will be concentrated around the unique stories of our women. How they find strength and motivation despite their background. Through our brand the consumer will get a feeling of knowing the person who made their purse. Story will be communicated through elements such as tags, leaflets, webpage, PR stories and social media/viral videos.
Our main target segment is trendy, wealthy and conscious female consumers from 25-40yrs. We are entering the luxury market, which is growing. Products will be sold on the Internet and in fashion stores first in the Nordics, then US and other European countries.

We didn´t have the "aha" moment for our idea while working for the peace corps, but on our time off. It didn’t take long for a couple of shopaholics to discover that Livingstone lacked proper clothing stores. And with a big passion for fashion we quickly trailed the solution to our problem.
In Livingstone there are hundreds of informal second-hand clothing stores. Vintage, second hand, beta products, high end. You name it they’ve got it. And so the treasure hunt had begun. Any garment with an outdated design, nice colour or good quality we took to Emmah´s Wear, the local seamstress.
Over the year of 2010 Emma and her employees made many nice things for us, but that is merely all they have done. They taught us about Zambian courtesy, work ethics and everyday struggle. We have to date a much appreciated relationship. Emma is an important piece in our puzzle, and we are very grateful to have her as part of our network.
When Merete and Iris enrolled a master in innovation and entrepreneurship in Norway Birgit becacme engaged. From here we have worked with the project as part of school and on our time off, which has helped us strucutreize our nascent business idea.
We are still in the nascent phase, and we have not yet made any impact to any individual. The creation and composition of our team and help from teachers and professional guides through our school have helped consolidate our business model. We have reviewed several ways on how to implement further training for our future staff. The design of our product has been evaluated carefully both to satisfy the consumers need and in order for our business to survive and grow organically. As an example we wanted to use off-cuts and second hand material, but after evaluating access to the supply and quality of material we saw this as a less sustainable model. Using leather from a local tannery is more viable and will support the local economy.
Job creation will have a tremendous impact on the individuals, their families and the community. They will have the possibility to earn their own money, which will buy food, shelter, clothes and medicines. Our partner organizations will also be able to help more people when spaces are opened.
The biggest barriers for success within the handbag-market is distribution and customer loyalty. This can be contract with distributors, placement in store, realtionship to the fashion-press, scale advantages within marketing and production and branding familiarity. We are actively working on lowering these challenges.
An example of lowering the challanges is to use under the line marketing to get our brand recognized.

In order to run the start-up process as smoothly as possible with the necessary resources available, we account with a capital requirement of $350 000 distributed over 2yrs. This will result in a surplus after 2 years. At this point we have employed 100 women in Zambia and are selling 10 000 purses a year.
We are currently working on applications for support through philantropic funders and supporters. We are also working on carrying out fund raising in Norway and Zambia.
For the first period our biggest expenditures will be location, equimpent and expert staff (designers and seamstresses).

As mentoined above it will take us about 2 years to break even. It will be important with funding and support in the very beginning. Our advantage is that we can sell our product from the very first manufacturing day locally in Zambia. It is part of our strategic plan to make use of the tourist market in Livingstone to cover expenditures while expanding and streamlining the business.

We are in contact with suppliers in both South Africa and loccaly in Zambia. The supplier in South Africa has already helped us with leather for our prototypes, free of charge.
We have a good network in Zambia, and have involved both a local accountant and advisors. We are collaborating with individuals that with can create pull-effects locally.
We are also in contact with three large NGOs that are working with vocational training for vulnerable women.
¿Qué apoyo interno has tenido para tu proyecto? Qué tipos de retrocesos has sufrido?
Our board is to date our most important internal support. Livingstone is the tourist capital of Zambia, and one of our board members are heavily involved in LTA (Livingstone Tourist Association). As part of the strategy to obtain cash flow on an early stage we will attract tourists locally to buy our products. Our board has already been in contact with different lodges, and they will set up tourist shuttels to come to our manufacturing site.

Resúmen: ¿De qué tema o problema específico trata tu emprendimiento?
While from a statistical perspective, Sioux Falls has enjoyed favorable economic development, that development has not benefited marginalized populations that are served by Kilian. Sioux Falls has low unemployment because we have a lot of low-wage, service sector jobs, which do not create economic and community development. Our students often graduate simply from having one low-wage job to moving up into a low-wage job with more "stature." Many students see it as a sign of success to no longer have to maintain two full-time jobs. In the first year, this venture will directly impact 2 individuals with incubator space, 16 individuals with intense venture development counseling and education, 40 individuals with venture development seminars which will lead to 5 new venture start-ups in 2014.
Enunciado de tu misión: ¿Qué hace tu emprendimiento?
To empower students to build, implement, and grow their own social venture concepts to create a positive and sustainable social impact in their local communities.
We will create a small business incubator housed in Kilian Community College that focuses on social entrepreneurship enterprises. We will work with entrepreneurs coming from populations of low-to moderate- income within the Sioux Falls community and the surrounding area. Prospective entrepreneurs will compete for a twelve month experience with the incubator. Entrepreneurs will take a seven non-credit courses: Social Venture Creation, Venture Development, Marketing Plan, Operational Plan, Financial Plan, Back-Office Development and Business Communications. Students enrolled in the non-credit courses will also have the opportunity to work individually through a mentoring program with community volunteers who have a variety of business experiences to fine-tune their venture plans and to counsel students in developing community networks that will support their ventures after they have completed the process. These courses and counseling/mentoring sessions will lead to the creation of a competitive application packet for the incubator competition. Students will apply for the the incubator with their packet and an interview process with local business professionals. If selected, the honoree will work with college and community volunteers to start their social business. Honorees will graduate from the program one year after winning the competition. Honorees will also volunteer the following year(s) to help the new class of students through the venture planning process. We will also offer community-wide seminars in these areas for individuals not enrolled in the program.
This venture plans to work with individuals from low-to-moderate- income levels in Sioux Falls, SD and surrounding rural communities who traditionally do not have access to business development programs. We will initially target our own student body who is 75% female, 50% of whom are single-mothers. Our student body is highly diverse with 25% of our students being of Native American descent. Many of our students are recent refugees or immigrants who are looking for ways to start over in the United States. The majority of our students are first-generation college students who personally and familially have not had access to college education or business development opportunities. There are no organizations working with this demographic for business development.
I have those uncomfortable gray plastic institution chairs in my office. Any day you walk by my office, you'll find students there ... some sprawled across them like they're lounging in front of a TV football game while others perch on the edge, legs moving with nervous energy. Some hover halfway in the doorway and won't approach the chairs, even with an invitation. They aren't there to ask about grades or to get tutoring. They are there to talk, to tell me their stories. The stories range from single mothers juggling jobs, veterans reintegrating into civilian life, former gang members and drug dealers starting over after prison, 18 year-olds out to change the world, laid-off fifty-somethings, and refugees running from torture. All want a better life for them and their families. Education only gets them so far. It's time to help them get to the next stage. As one tells me, “Why are you struggling so hard to stay in misery? If you have to struggle, struggle for a positive life.”
While increasing student enrollment in the entrepreneurship courses and mentoring program, I would like to expand the incubator program so that it creates five small businesses per year. The incubator program will also expand to include a micro-lending program which will provide partial funding through low-interest loans and grants for up to twenty social businesses per year. If this model is successful in the Sioux Falls area, I would like to work with rural and reservation communities and the refugee/immigrant community in Sioux Falls to expand the program to their areas. Expansion will require us to revise the delivery methodology and the materials to be sensitive of local customs and needs.

From January 2013 - July 2013 the venture will create 7 non-credit social entrepreneurship courses and their associated materials (mobile apps, videos, written and interactive informational pieces). These courses and materials will be designed with the educational and cultural background of our target market. We will also create the application and interview process for the incubator competition. The materials and processes will be initially created in-house at Kilian Community College but will then be reviewed by our Board of Trustees and several other potential partner businesses and/or agencies. During this time we will also begin recruiting business people from the local community to teach and mentor. We already have a guarantee that the Sioux Falls branch of Capital One Card Services will provide well-qualified volunteers for our venture. Also from January 2013 through July 2013 the venture will recruit 16 students to participate in the 7 courses and an intense mentoring program with local volunteers who have business experience. There are currently four students interested in the idea and want more information. From May 2013 through August 2013 we will register and collect deposits from students entering the program. Classes will run from September 2013 through March 2014. The incubator competition will take place in April 2014. We will work closely with students who wish to coordinate with South Dakota's Giant Vision Competition, held in March 2014. The incubator program will begin in May 2014. Student recruitment and materials revision activities will be ongoing.

1.Two businesses will “graduate” from the incubator program. These businesses will employ 2 to 5 individuals and make a positive, social impact in the community.
2. Fourteen additional individuals will "graduate” from the non-credit entrepreneurship classes. Three of these individuals will begin their business on their own within the next 12 to 18 months and will be solely self-employed.
3. Forty individuals will attend venture development seminars. Three of these individuals will begin their businesses on their own within the next 12 to 18 months and will be solely self-employed. Five of these individuals will re-calibrate their current business ventures to make positive social impacts within their communities.
4. Sixteen individuals will begin the second round of the non-credit entrepreneurship classes in 2014-2015 with three winning the competition.
We will measure the venture's success based on the number of local social businesses established and maintained over a 1 year, 3 year, 5 year and 10 year period. The venture will also measure the number of jobs created by these local ventures. It is important that we also measure the social impact on the community of these ventures. To do this, the venture will interview participants throughout their progress in the program and then at 1 year, 3 year, 5 year and 10 year intervals. We will also conduct interviews of individuals positively impacted by the new social businesses. The venture will also track local community demographic, social, and economic trends to deduce impact of the social businesses.

Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
Innovation and Scientific Research rates are reaching horrible figures these days . Egypt has a quite low number of people who have the ability or the resources to successfuly innovate or invent new methods or products to help the country and make it excel from all the various aspects . The fact is there are many awesome brains which have brilliant ideas that they want to start working on , But the major problem is that they lack the guidance or the tutor to help them with assembling their inventions or to guide them through turning their ideas from the paper to reality , They don't know where to go to get help about fulfilling their dreams or projects or they don't have sufficient funds to get supervised or tutored specially that the poverty rates are increasing in a devastating way .
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
This will be the first website of its kind . This website will enable each student to suggest a certain project or invention he has always dreamt to create , then the high board of scholars - specialised people , academic tutors , and PHD holders - who will in most of the cases be volunteers and those who look to supervise projects and inventions and innovative ideas , to take a look at all the requests of creative ideas and projects that they received from students . Approved projects will be published on the website and students from all over the country and those who have access to the website can choose to work on the project they choose from the website - of course those related to their fields . in this way students of similar interests will be able to connect with each other and work on a certain project and even receive guidance from the tutors on the website . Listed projects will be supervised by the tutors and advertised to massive companies through marketing experts .
Students from the university where i learn will no longer have to worry about the poor research facilities or laboratories or inconvenient tutoring or teaching , they can now rely on this website to connect with other students they don't know but share same thoughts , to successfully enhance their ideas and build their models through being assisted by top quality tutors . Competitions will also be held at the end of the year concerning the best project and the best team .

Being part of a large charity organization , i travel to poor places all accross the country to supply food and clothes to the poor . During one day , while i was visiting a college to advertise for our organisation . I spoke with a student about the major obstacles he faces in the learning process . The guy was a genuis which i later knew from his friends and had a quite high GPA . He told me that he wanted to create an advanced vehicle that would save alot of space and solve the congestion problem . but the obstacle he is facing is that he is studying an electrical engineering degree , therefore this invention has no relation with his major and he has no idea about where to go to get help or which students who are of same abilities and creativity can work with him for his invention . He had awesome knowledge of mechanical engineering . I then started to think why can't we create a "facebook" for the genuises to make the willing students achieve their dreams to benefit their countries
10 teams have been formed , where each team comprises of students from universities from all around the country . Each team work on a certain project and they are supervised by experienced tutors . Students are delighted that they have been able to connect with students of matching interests and even be able to work with each other . Projects include the following fields : mechanical , accounting , tranposrtation and many other fields ! Students from different economical standards can join each other without bothering themselves about the relatively high cost of materials they use or the supervision they get .
I want the impact of the website to increase from 10 projects to a one thousand projects or even more . I want to have an enormous database of students and expertised people and be able to connect them together in the easiest way possible . I want to hear that my country has been able to implement a new project or technology that has been assembled by students from the website .

The design problem being explored is a social issue, which involves the wisdom that is being lost from our elder generation to our younger generation. There is a inter-generational gap between our elders and our youth, which respectively includes people in the baby boomer generation and older generations such as seniors and the younger generations, such as the millennial generation – people born after 1980.
The design opportunity that is presented involves bridging the gap of communication and interaction with these two demographics – the elders and the youth in hopes to connecting the elders’ knowledge, experience and wisdom to the younger population.
Enunciado de tu misión: ¿Qué hace tu emprendimiento?
The mission of this project is to facilitate meaningful relationships with our youth and elder populations within a sustainable model. These relationships will be developed by the idea of togetherness through the act of doing, making and teaching with the potential of gaining empathy towards each other through inherent story telling, mentorship and sharing of life.
My research has reveals a very common problem in Vancouver that is rooted by language barriers with inter-generational relationships. Without a meaningful path of communication, personal relationships are often lost, therefore empathy and wisdom is lost.
The retiring baby-boomers are the most knowledgable, skillful and employable talents to take on retired life and so they could be a resource to draw from as communicative mediators to conversations in foreign languages.
An example of how my solution will make impact is by arranging "play-dates" with the youth and elder where a translator can mediate a meaningful conversation. The play-dates would be time that the youth and elders can spend time together doing an activity such as restoring old furniture and while they spend time, a translator will open a path of personal dialogue between the two as they work together. The job of the mediator is to facilitate deeper dialogue which otherwise, would be hindered by lack of expressive language.
The stakeholders in this venture include retirees and seniors in Vancouver and youth in their 20's to 30's. The development of my concept is based on the design process that I've embraced as an Industrial Design student at Emily Carr University of Art and Design and currently my community will start local and small taking on the idea of sticking to "Grassroots" and "Amplifying" approach. This approach speaks to starting small, local and with early adopters with the goal of nurturing a community with the potential to scale up to larger capacities.
The key populations affected would include the following; retirees, especially the baby boomer population preparing for retirement and adjusting to retirement. The senior population in care homes and small communities (i.e. Strathcona).
My story was inspired by multiple factors. First, my mother who is a baby boomer, who has been a home-maker for much of her parental life, but was forced to work when my parents separated. Being a long-time accounting clerk for a non-profit, she was laid off in an ultra-competitive job market. For nearly a year of unemployment, we tried to see ways of employing her natural informally train skills. Through this experience, it dawned on me how many baby-boomers who are like my mother who have a wealth of knowledge, skills and abilities that aren't acknowledged by our society and in addition to the working world, they are not embraced by youth. The tragic part of this phenomenon is that wisdom is lost when the rising generation operates more-so amongst themselves and with less communication with their respective elders. I delved into research which reveals the wicked problem of retiring baby-boomers as well as the ongoing issue of lonely neglected seniors in our society.
The long-term vision of this venture is have my hyper-local communities spread all over the Lower Mainland, where elders and youth intermingle, sharing time, knowledge and skills together. My research has reveals that for the youth population, being rooted in ancestral relationships has the potential provide people with a grounding, a higher level respect for their elders and a level of inherent life-mentorship and guidance in their decision making. In terms of the elder perspective, being engaged with society has health benefits, physically and psychologically. Physically, community engagement promotes physical activity and psychologically, there is a higher sense of belonging and empowerment by being acknowledged and relevant to society.
Define tu empresa, programa, servicio o producto en 1-2 frases cortas.
A community based business model or platform that empowers youth and elders to develop meaningful inter-generational relationships.
In the first year, I would hope to implement this venture in a hyper local community, such as the Strathcona neighbourhood in Vancouver. Strathcona is an ideal location as it has a long standing multi-cultural, multi-generational heritage and is known for its tight knit community – a prototypical location of early adopters which include both youth and elders.
Understanding that the first year would be a year for trial and error, I would hope to prepare a small group of passionate community members as volunteers to bring this to life. Having passionate personnel is our key to success. This approach is inspired by the success of Creative Mornings, a monthly lecture series of creatives developed by New York-based designer, Tina Roth Eisenberg which runs all over the world and is successfully running in Vancouver, managed by Vancouver's Mark Busse.
In order to continuously improve, this system would have clear performance quantitative and qualitative metrics. Quantitative data may include, the number of connections made in the community, the longevity of the relationships, measure of cultural diversity and the number of participants involved. Qualitative data is a designer's specialty and is a key area to gain actionable insights. Our qualitative information may include feedback systems through dialogue, questionnaires and training our volunteers to be mindful of the user experience in order to generate constructive insight.
An overarching goal would be to establish a revenue generating model to be implemented in the following year.

Having strong administration of a system is important however, success will ultimately be based on the amount of impact it has on the relationships between youth and elders. The discovery of knowledge and information between the youth and elders.
¿Cómo definirás el éxito tu emprendimiento a largo plazo (1 año)?
In the long-term, which would most likely be more than one year, success would be the adaptability of the service to variance in the volume of participants large or small and the ability to sustain itself as an organization.
I will measure success based on my sense of developing leaders within the community in both the youth and elder demographic. I feel that the wisdom that is being passed on is a two-way street – elders provide experience and perspective and youth can bring a modern version of that but also a rejuvenating level of ambition and courage. I would feel accomplished, when I know that this service has sparked behaviour change in a way that it facilitates relationships by removing stigmas between the different generations – relationships that are ongoing, fruitful and loving.
¿Por qué?
Community living is essential to making our world a more sustainable place to live – environmentally as well as socially.
According to a study by Marketdata Enterprises in 2010, the motivational self-improvement market is worth $10.5 billion. This includes programs and services developed into books, CDs/DVDs, audiobooks, infomercials, motivational speakers, seminars/workshops, retreats, webinars, personal coaching, online education, websites, training organisations and more.

Innovation: I drive a strong agenda of innovation, often reconciling complex conflicting opinions. Scope of innovation has included creation of new technology platforms (CRM, social media, apps), new revenue streams (new products/services) and new HR practices (recruitment and training).
Communication: An idea is only as good as your ability to sell it, and both inside and outside the business I have developed a reputation as a recognized thought leader and frequently engaged keynote speaker with a dynamic and provocative style, and the ability to sell my ideas.
Risk taking: Having been with ChangeLabs since its inception, I am accustomed to working in small-business environments where most bold decisions are accompanied with near game-breaking degrees of risk.

There are many players trying to create positive behavior change across this and other spaces, but their models are flawed. Too many not-for-profits spend most of their time and money (ironically) trying to raise money; too many businesses use their CSR budgets or Foundations in either low-impact or low-leverage ways; too many governments have too much red-tape and bureaucracy to wade through.
Finally, there is a lack of rigorous, sensible formative and summative evaluation applied to many programs that operate in the social space.
We have built and continue to refine a model for not only theoretically understanding human behavior, but sustainably funding, designing and delivering at large scale impactful programs that change the way people think, act and buy.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Our solution is to effectively link a compelling social need to a corporate brand platform, thus aligning existing (or creating new) CSR or Foundational funding behind behavior change programs that are built in line with best-practice in driving social impact.
All ChangeLabs projects benefit both the brands that support them and the communities which those brands serve.
This reverses the typical corporate CSR strategy of ‘pick a charity and write a cheque’, and rather creates a flagship program unequivocally owned by and associated with the brand, which along with the large-scale of the program and proven impact creates a compelling social brand story that can be leveraged as part of their broader company positioning.
Firstly, the mode of delivery of our programs in an increasingly digital age is face-to-face.
Secondly, ChangeLabs makes the brands that ‘own’ the programs famous, not us. This is the ‘flip’ that turns CSR strategy on its head and how we ensure sustainable funding for programs
Thirdly, our deep research and academic partnerships mean that our programs are built with genuine, academic third-party validation and measurement of impact in mind.
Our largest and most impactful program to date is the StartSmart program, built in close partnership with our partners at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This face-to-face money management program, which aims to change the financial habits of a whole generation for the better, reaches over 200,000 people every year. It was recognized with awards for community contribution (2009), innovation (2010) and, for an extension to the program, best new product (2012).
In New Zealand, the GetWise program we design and run for ASB Bank has worked directly with over 65% of all New Zealand Students.
To a program impactful for all stakeholders, four elements must be brought together (these are the ‘secret sauce’ that no other organization has managed to put together). We refer to them as ‘4M’.
Market: understand who you are trying to impact, where to find them and, crucially, how to structure a program that reaches them at high scale. Face-to-face is an expensive medium and so finding high volume-per-facilitator is vital.
Message: understand how to build content in such a way that it catalyses positive behavior change in a short time. This is built on a deep understanding of instructional design, education and behavior.
Medium: understand how to attract, engage, retain and unleash world-class facilitators who are able to create compelling experiences that shift the way people think, act and buy.
Measurement: understanding how to design and rollout both formative and summative program evaluation in a way that produces accurate, meaningful and defensible results.
In our research and experience, there are no organizations currently fusing the four elements of effective face-to-face behavior change experiences in the same way we are. There are some organisations who share similar philosophies, methodologies or functionalities, but rarely more than one of those three.
Those with similar philosophies are NFPs or cause marketing companies like GoodCorps, who aim to either create positive change or to help companies associate with issues of social importance.
Those with similar methodologies include research universities or educational institutions that study social change or run research programs to assess social impact.
Those with similar functionalities include training companies that build and/or deliver workshops on behalf of corporate clients.

ChangeLabs grew out of a frustration with the lack of progress being made on issues of vital social importance; everyone was talking about the problem of financial illiteracy, of obesity, or mental wellness – precious few were designing programs that could make a difference at scale.
My own experience as a world top-10 debater, and ChangeLabs CEO Peter Sheahan’s experience as an internationally engaged keynote speaker (and previous experience working with tens of thousands of students around study skills) made us feel that if we could just harness and unleash the amazing power of people to change people then we could make a difference.
Thus, the idea to find a way to scale face-to-face interventions that drive behavior change was born.
Since inception in 2007, nearly 1 million people have been through ChangeLabs programs (even though those individuals would have no idea who ChangeLabs is, rather associating the programs with our clients). Over 65% of New Zealand students have been through a ChangeLabs program. Over 20,000 teachers have been through ChangeLabs programs – and we’re just getting started.
Our programs have been recognized with multiple awards for innovation, community contribution and best new products.
Whilst we have always surveyed program participants and can show that our programs work, in pursuit of better we have partnered with the Centre for Program Evaluation and Melbourne University, the Australian Council for Education Research and the NZCER to commence more rigorous quantitative and qualitative evaluations of our programs.
We are proud that early topline results indicate a profound impact, and full reports will be released in March 2013.
In the next 3 years we will have forged at least 6 new partnerships in America and Europe (where business development is already underway), and be on our way to reaching our 2020 goal of impacting a million people a year.
We will have behavior change programs off the ground in our five identified social areas: financial literacy, cyber bullying, mental wellness, healthy eating and active lifestyles.
We will have shifted the needle in corporate CSR to get out of small-scale, disjointed and ineffective grants and into high-impact, aligned behavior change programs that make a real, measurable difference.
We will have continued to research and publish in the areas of face-to-face experiences, the science of behavior change and social entrepreneurialism in order to move the space forward.

Breaking into global markets and territories where we are an unknown force. We are Overcoming this through hosting events, contributing to global conferences, sharing our insight and research through publications, and making bold and direct approaches to prospective partners.
The double edged sword of being a ‘silent brand’. We overcome this through not seeing it as a barrier but rather a valuable tool. Business, now more than ever, must become the champions of the communities in which they operate.
Convincing prospective partners to walk away from trusted (even if innefective) traditional community activities and invest into a unique model for change. This is overcome through rigorous third party academic evaluations of our programs and sharing our successes through open reporting.

ChangeLabs has various revenue streams: writing and publications, keynote speaking, teacher training and education. The ‘quest’ part of the business, which is how we refer to large-scale behavior change programs referenced in this application, should be our largest, most profitable and most impactful business unit. Already generating upwards of AUD$6mil in revenue at roughly 20% margin, we feel this foundation is well laid to ensure that these programs are core ChangeLabs business.

Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
Our nation is currently experiencing a student loan debt crisis with over 70% of college students being forced borrow money in order to finance their education and roughly 35% of students leaving college without a degree due to lack of adequate funding. Rising costs of education and lower savings for college have left the majority of college students with a grim choice - Drop out of college or go into debt to receive a college education. There are over 20 million enrolled college students in the United States. The average debt of all graduating students is over $46,000. Crippling student loan payments are keeping students from getting married, starting a family, buying a home, and more. Imagine the economic effects if those payments were freed up to be injected into their local economies!
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
BrainFund changes the economics of college finance by giving students a new way to pay for college. It allows students to encourage donations through a concept that we like to call “Crowd Scholarships”. Similar to the way Kickstarter.com works, BrainFund allows college students the ability to raise small amounts of money from large amounts of people, and this can add up to allot of money for a college student. If 100 people give just $25 to a student each semester, that is $2,500 each semester that will help the student pay for tuition, fees, rent, food, gas, and other college related expenses.
We provide a web based platform that connects students and donors in one central location. Donors can give to an individual student of their choice. We verify enrollment for every student that uses our system to ensure proper representation and to give the donor peace of mind. Students create a profile to tell donors about their goals and aspirations. Donors can track the student's fundraising progress and students can update donors on their goals and accomplishments.
Crowd Scholarships is a concept that allows the student to encourage large amounts of people to give small amounts of money. This term originates from the term Crowd Funding, which is the concept that an entity can raise a significant amount of money by receiving relatively small contributions from a large amount of people. Typically these people are from inner circles of friends or social networks. An example of this would be raising money for a cause whereby an individual has a network of 1,000 individuals. Out of these 1,000 individuals, if only 100 of them each contribute only $50 to the cause, the total contribution would be $5,000. This is the power of Crowd Funding. BrainFund takes this concept even further and specializes it for college students. We connect donors and students in one central web based community, empowering the student by allowing that student to set up a profile that utilizes a student’s current network to attract donors, who are able to donate to a specific college student of their choice through our unique patent pending process. We will also attract outside donors from corporations to give to students that they can search for by their own alma mater, degree, key words, and more! Corporations will be able to sponsor giving campaigns and encourage their employees to give to students on BrainFund.net to provide a tremendous impact on our nation and economy. Companies will participate in partnering with BrainFund, because it promotes great corporate responsibility for the future of our nation and our economy!
The Status Quo is our main competition. It is easy to get a student loan, but we believ we can educate students on why this is a bad decision and help change the way people think about paying for college. There are currently no other crowdfunding concepts in the market that allow student the ability to raise money in this capacity that they do not have to pay back in some way. Other player may try to come along, which would challeng our growth, however, we offer a solution that truly helps students graduate debt-free.

The concept of BrainFund was born as an idea in the mind of an MBA student at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business. Casey Hinson graduated with an undergraduate finance degree from the University of Houston in 2008, but was left with a mountain of student loan debt in return. Having personally realized the heavy burden that student loan debt causes, he began dreaming of ways to help future students avoid this same fate. After some research, he found that an alarming 70% of all college students graduate with significant student loan debt, and that roughly 35% of students leave college without a degree due to lack of adequate funding.
Being an entrepreneur at heart, Casey wanted to create a solution to this problem by providing an avenue for college students to raise funds to finance their education without using student loans or federal grants. He envisioned the Crowd Scholarship concept that would benefit both students and donors.
We launched our site at the beginning of the Fall 2012 semester and have gained significant traction over the past few months, gaining over 130 new users with virtually no marketing funds. We have been interviewed by a new tv show and by online college websites who will be featuring our story over the next few months. We hope to grow awareness of our social cause at a rapid pace over the next few years.
Students now borrow over $100 Billion dollars each year, which is double the amount of just 5 years ago. We hope to offset the need for student loans by over $500 Million to $1 Billion over the next 3 years. this could potentially help millions of college students graduate debt-free or reduce the aggregate amount of their debt burden tremendously.
The barriers we may face will be resistance to change, scepticism, and the status quo. We believe that if we can properly educate students on the negative impacts of student loan debt and bring a very visible awareness of the problem and our solution to donors and the general public, that this concept will succeed and help to change the economics of college finance.

Currently, there are over 1 million Kenyan children not attending school (Source: UNESCO). One of the primary reasons why poverty stricken families do not send their children to school or remove them from school is because the parents rely on their own children to work for money that provides support to the family for basic needs such as food and shelter.
For each year of education a child in Kenya receives, his or her annual income increases by 10% (Source: USAID). What if a child could be paid and attend school, both in parallel?

JobScout teaches the essential Internet skills needed to find a job in today's online marketplace. At first glance, this may seem elementary. There is a focus in the online education space on continuing education and opening up the university, giving users access to college courses or advanced computer skills, like coding. But the JobScout platform has been created for users who need to master what a URL is before they can even think about the possibility of coding in HTML.
The founders met while producing the first online inaugural gala for the Obama Administration in 2009. In 2011, they were tasked with using the tools of the Internet to build some to teach people how to use the Internet. Accepting this challenge, they built JobScout in partnership with the California State Library.

We work with community partners and customers, like libraries, to provide an offline access point to bring Internet and jobseeking skills to people who do not have access to them. Our team continues to come with creative ways to employ social gaming to tackle the issues of digital literacy and unemployment.

Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
It may be hard to imagine, in the wake of the IPOs of social networking companies and the advances in devices like the iPhone 5 that allow people to connect to the Internet, that there are people in 2012 in the United States who still do not use the Internet. One in five Americans fall into this category, according to Pew Research Center.
One in five Americans cannot check a movie time, make a purchase or connect with friends and family members using the Internet. If one in five Americans cannot do any of the above, one in five Americans certainly cannot find a job online. This also means that one in five Americans do not possess the skills necessary to qualify for many of the jobs available today.

JobScout uses gamification of its educational materials to engage users in a fully guided process of learning everything about navigating the Internet. The platform provides over 30 lessons to users, ranging from "Introduction to Internet Browsing" to "Using the Internet to Prepare for an Interview." For each lesson a user completes, they earn a badge. The platform provides a ResumeBuilder allowing users to create fill-in-the-blank resumes, a job search function and the ability to apply to jobs and manage job applications directly from the site.
The platform, still in beta but available nationwide, is in over 600 libraries in California and will be available to every library in California by the end of 2012. Outside of the libraries, K-12 education institutions have begun to subscribe to JobScout to use the tools in their workforce and adult education programs.
JobScout is free for users and available online. Our business model consists of institutions as customers.
JobScout's formula is simple: users take lessons, earn badges for completing those lessons and apply those lessons to find work. JobScout's mission is challenging: the platform's goal is to teach people how to use the Internet by using the Internet. The platform uses another non-traditional approach: it works through local entities, such as libraries, training staff to be the offline entry point and support network for new Internet users.
Through public partnerships, JobScout has been made available to the public libraries in California. Our team believes that one story particularly exemplifies the need for JobScout. As we visited the Banning Library in Banning, California, we waited in line at the circulation desk to ask for the director. As of 9 a.m. that morning, the waiting list for the computer terminals was already full until 11:30 a.m. As we met with the director, we learned that Banning had lost its other e-learning resources and that our platform, as it was made available to the pilot libraries at no cost, was now the sole resources for jobhunters. After a successful demonstration, the JobScout logo was up on the Banning Library website within a few hours and made available to its patrons. This story demonstrates the need for small libraries like Banning across the California and across the country for practical resources that help to combat issues like digital illiteracy and empower jobseekers to gain the skills they need to find employment. This is but one instance of where people are waiting for hours at their local libraries just to the use the Internet.
JobScout’s competitors are in-person training programs in the workforce development space. The challenge for JobScout is carefully navigating its customer base: libraries and workforce development centers have different ways of partnering and providing funding for the products they purchase.
Platforms that are operating in the same larger online education space include Coursera, MITX, Khan Academy and Codeacademy. Our team often gets asked what we do that is different. If our users were climbing a ladder, JobScout would be the first step that would need to climb on before accessing these other online tools. There are over 70 million people in the US alone who cannot use the Internet.

JobScout is a startup that was never meant to be a startup. California State Librarian Stacey Aldrich wanted to solve the problem of millions of Californians coming into libraries not knowing how to the use the Internet. Presented to our founding team, we embarked on creating a platform that did so. Once we saw how excited people were to use the resource and that it was making a different, it was clear we need to create the company and make a go of it
The platform arose from a partnership of the California State Library, spearheaded by State Librarian Stacey Aldrich, and a call to action to the LINK AMERICAS Foundation, the foundation responsible for shepherding the nation's first statewide effort to tackle digital literacy through California. The call to action was to create something to aid the millions of California library patrons who rely on the libraries for their Internet access and source of employment information.
We are in all 1,057 libraries in California and are moving to expand nationwide. Thousands of lessons have been taken and users are learning how to practically use the Internet to become employed and become participants in the online economy.
JobScout is free for users and available online. Native mobile applications are being developed for iOs, set to launch in late 2012, and for Android, set to launch in 2013. The platform will also launch a version in Spanish in 2013, addressing the growing employment and education needs of the Spanish speaking population in the United States. Our company has also received seed funding to build HealthScout, which will employ a similar model to JobScout, but focus on technology empowerment to manage health and wellness. We have a vision to develop tools that aim to eradicate the digital divide and improve access to employment, education, government, healthcare and information.
There are some critics of using social gaming and badge systems as part of the learning process. Also, the concept of teaching people to use the Internet by using an online platform has been a concept some do not understand. Our company also combats breaking into an industry, workforce development, where the solutions and processes have been the same for decades.

Necesidad: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental estás intentando solucionar?
Ghana has a huge database of unemployed graduates and many more unskilled youth and adults. The situation is so bad that graduates have set up an 'Unemployed Youth Association' which means they sit at home and do nothing until government provides them with jobs.
The market for intelligent technological teaching devices is growing exponentially. The key factors driving this growth are the increase in the technology in Ghana and the rest of Africa, the double-income household and the loss of leisure time. Our target market's behavioral patterns are changing dramatically as well - research used to happen in many places;now increasingly it happens on the Internet.

Our website which is in beta has attracted over 7,500 registered members within 5months of going active*now suspended for maintenance). The concept used a marketing strategy of attracting people by involving local celebrities and some cutting edge entertainment activities.
Our first workshop was entrepreneurship and batik and tie dye classes which saw a graduate with a masters degree finish learning how to make splendid Batik and tie dye designs within three days and has started his own business. This to us, proves that this concept is workable and key to our development.
We shall provide the classes and workshops on as many subjects as shall be required. All offline classes shall be streamed online to reach a wider spectrum across the globe.
Afropaddy will be known as a powerhouse for students and adults to get first hand tuition on various subjects that focus on building entrepreneurs in Africa.

African social networks such as Naijapals.com, Allafricacafe.com, Iamaghanaian.com and Ghanawall.com have followed the trend of integrating all social networking tools from facebook into their websites. This move has failed because everybody is on facebook. Allafricancafe.com is a better competition among the list as they target an all African market. However apart from its design and African news feeds, the site has the same attributes as the others (such as movies and music).
During our research, we did not find any African Educative social network website like Afropaddy. Our market would use Afropaddy for its effectiveness and uniqueness.

Afopaddy was created to redirect the trend of social networking in Africa and soon the rest of the world. The founder recognized a major problem:unemployment and lack of skilled and educated youth was not getting any better, yet development in the sector of internet penetration in Ghana and Africa is on the increase. This improvement has its advantages, but in every advantage lies some disadvantages. The influx of social networks saw most youths spend their time on these networks. I wanted to do something about it, since i knew how addictive these mediums could be and how most of the users are uneducated and unemployed. So i got to work on finding a way to turn what i saw as a negative addiction into a positive addiction. Thus the creation of Afropaddy: a social network that will see young people learn and teach in a fun way. After testing the idea, i realised how catchy the concept was, generating over 7,000 members without any funding within 6months of going active.
Afropaddy has been able to attract almost 8,000members and over 500,000 visitors within 7months of going active. It's offline classes which aimed at getting practical subjects taught to students so they can be self reliant, has seen graduates and uneducated people learn how to make Batik and tie dye(first demo class). We are on our next move to organize our next class which is "how to make liquid soap". For now we believe giving the opportunity to people to learn and teach so they can put food on the table will impact not only on an individual but families to come.
Over the next 1 to 3 years, Afropaddy will be noted as a one stop shop for knowledge in a style that is fashionable and social. In 3 years, we envision that Africans will teach themselves over a platform that is border less. Graduates and professionals will have an avenue to share their knowledge and get paid for it. Afropaddy will explode over the shores of Ghana into the rest of Africa and will be known as a power house for sharing and selling knowledge.
Our major barrier is finance, as is the case always in many start ups. I believe for us to achieve 7,000 plus members all without any sort of funding, the sky will be the limit when we get an investor. Also, i believe internet penetration in Ghana and Africa as a whole still has some improvements to be to made. That is why we add offline classes to make sure the gap is bridged.
Another problem we face is also the lack of adequate skills. Our platform needs to be improved and we need more programmers and designers to take Afropaddy to the next level. But issues will be solved when we have the necessary financing. As much as we have ways to attract the best and still save a lot of money, we believe our staff must be well remunerated so they bring out their best.

As identified in the United Way's Seniors Vulnerability Report of 2011 and results from local data, Richmond Seniors are a growing percentage of the population (cited at 14-20% of the current population). Seniors within our communities sometimes feel that their families in Canada "do not listen to them". They can be confused about their role in this new country and feel marginalized. Our communities are aging and Senior's are feeling more isolated and disconnected from this ever changing world. This program will empower them to make changes within their families and communities. They will be given an important purpose - to model and educate their families and other seniors about responsible use of alcohol and drugs.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Seniors living in Richmond, Vancouver and Surrey will be recruited to act as "ambassadors" - planning education events, going on radio talk shows, distributing material and modelling responsible alcohol and prescription drug use within their community. The ambassadors will receive training that increases their knowledge of alcohol, drugs (medicines) and healthy aging. After training they will engage with other members as 'Ambassadors' or leaders/mentors to model and teach responsible alcohol and drug use. This project engages seniors from all ethnic groups including First Nations. This program will empower seniors to make changes within their families and communities and reach out to their peers. The seniors will also be encouraged to share information with other cultural groups.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
The Community Ambassadors project aims to meet the needs for both these groups of Seniors. The Community Ambassadors project will meet both focused outcomes of enhancing Senior's independence by creating leadership, as a part of the Advisory Committee, peer-mentoring roles, as Ambassadors, and increasing social connections by creating support groups, during training, within their cultural group as well as across cultural groups. The seniors will develop confidence, a sense of purpose and leadership skills that they will share with the larger community by creating engagement methods, distributing information, planning education events, going on talk shows, contacting newspapers including ethnic papers and acting as positive role models within their communities. This project meets the goals of engagement and leadership but also the BC goals of Inclusion, Participation and Connections. In addition, these Seniors will be Leaders and help increase a Seniors Well-Being and goal of Lifelong Learning. In 2010 - 2011, Richmond Addiction Services piloted a South Asian Ambassadors project focused solely on South Asian Seniors in Richmond partially funded through The New Horizons for Seniors Grant. Through, the South Asian Advisory group (all seniors), we have worked diligently together to set up and implement the project. The Advisory committee, given its successes has now requested that the Ambassadors no longer concentrate solely on the South Asian community but branch out and extend their influence across Richmond including all other ethnic groups.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
We have peers with all other Senior serving agencies, Vancouver Coastal Health, the Nurse Next Door, the City of Richmond, Volunteer Richmond. We have no competitor's as all agencies and community agencies will see increased utilization from this program. The outcome is to have more connected senior's and their families and communities.

South Asian seniors have not used our agency in the past. 3 years ago a group of senior men approached Richmond Addiction Services to see how we could help them reduce the negative impact of alcohol and drugs within their community. An advisory group of South Asian seniors developed the idea of "ambassadors". They believe that the seniors need a role and that in the "old country" seniors had influence within their community and families.
An initial grant was written to pilot this project and we received the grant money to set up an advisory group and The South Asian Ambassadors were created. Training occurred within the community and over 70 volunteers were trained. The Advisory group said that this was not only a South Asian issue and so we have not begun writing grants to support an multi-ethnic ambassadors training paradigm.
This project engages seniors from across the community and will provide an opportunity for seniors to examine their beliefs and values and to gain new knowledge and skills in the area of public speaking, leadership, and addiction related issues like creating healthy boundaries and alternative coping skills. The ambassador reinforces this mentor role and gives the senior who is somewhat isolated from mainstream society an important purpose. The senior ambassador will share his/her new learning about communication skills, healthy coping and alcohol and drugs, especially over prescribed medications, with his/her extended family and social group. The senior ambassadors will also be able to link their family members and friends who need addiction services to appropriate agencies.
Over 70 volunteers have been recruited and have attended training. A Community Action Initiative grant has been received to help support a needs assessment and create a grant application for the second phase of funding. Partnerships with other agencies have been created and so far 60 interviews have been completed with Senior's to complete the needs assessment. A literature review has been completed as a part of the next phase of the grant application.

Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism provides a solution for individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit and business idea but lack the knowledge required to operate a successful business and financial means to acquire training. There are thousands of individuals like this in Surrey alone who fall through the cracks unable to be sponsored by governments for Self Employment Training and or skill development because they do not fall into Government recognized groups of need such as the Unemployed, Immigrant, Aboriginal, etc. With cooperation from Strategic Alliances throughout town, we will provide an avenue to business education for such individuals throughout Surrey.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism is a system by which individuals are able to volunteer with what they are good at doing in exchange for credits that can be redeemed for business courses as well as business assets, products and services. After a self assessment test volunteers begin volunteering at a point in a Timeline to Entrepreneurialism which best suits their skill level. The timeline concludes with them acquiring the required knowledge needed to successfully operate a business. Once the individual’s business is established they continue to participate by allowing other volunteers to volunteer with their business to earn credits for courses. The Entrepreneur can continue to volunteer and contribute to the system by offering their expertise in exchange for credits redeemable for business coaching or select products and services. This process keeps more money and knowledge within local communities.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
An individual with a business idea but no option of funding offers to volunteer for nonprofit organizations and businesses in exchange to learn how to become an Entrepreneur. The individual will complete an online assessment test. The assessment test indicates the ideal starting point for the volunteer. The volunteer will always start with tasks they are skilled enough to perform before the section of the Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism for which they need training. Therefore if it is determined through the assessment test that the individual lacks cold calling skills they will not be permitted to volunteer on the phones. If the test shows they are capable of doing data entry for admin, they will be asked to do tasks within that category to earn credits. Once the individual has enough credits to redeem for business training they are able to learn the next step to become an entrepreneur. The Volunteer then uses the knowledge they developed during the training to volunteer more for nonprofits and businesses by using the new skills they developed. Upon completion of all training the volunteer will have a business plan to follow and a registered business. As a new entrepreneur, they give back to the Volunteer to Entrepreneurial system by providing volunteer opportunities for other aspiring entrepreneurs to gain credits. The entrepreneur also has the opportunity to continue volunteering to earn credits to be redeemed for business consulting sessions to help in the implementation of the entrepreneurs’ business plan and overall success.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
The system isn’t structured for a single entity to profit, but is designed to strengthen communities through participants. As the goal is to educate and empower individuals in Surrey, competitors are often also allies. Examples can be seen in established strategic alliances with such organizations as SEEDS (Self Employment Entrepreneur Development Society) which teaches individuals how to become entrepreneurs, University Student Clubs at SFU and Kwantlen with the purpose of engaging members in volunteerism, training or entrepreneurialism, as well as Surrey Libraries which offers skill training and volunteer opportunities. Other competitors that encourage participants to volunteer for other causes would reduce our numbers, but ultimately contribute to the overall objective.

I was asked by a nonprofit to create a way for its members to prosper from working together. I felt if the members who were mostly small businesses and professionals shared customers and manpower, the overall cost of doing business would be reduced for everyone. Add special deals for new and repeat customers supported by advertising, promotions and training; and I had a system to generate greater economic activity within a geographic area and or demographic. The Government soon changed hands resulting in cuts and the closure of the nonprofit before my idea had been implemented. This was devastating. The idea subconsciously stayed with me for more than a decade and I started using parts of the system to help small businesses/organizations overcome obstacles. During a beta test the system raised over $1,500 for a nonprofit while giving consumers added value and prizes. I knew then the idea would work and be sustained on a scale as large as the participants desired.
Success would be providing individuals, non profits and small businesses in Surrey with entrepreneurial knowledge, greater purchasing power, and manpower respectively. Regardless of skill level or financial standing, people will have an opportunity to volunteer and develop skills to help them generate additional income and access entrepreneurial education while contributing to their community. Once the Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism has been established as a valid system to help people the next step to success will be to introduce the system to more cities that require Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism to help citizens become entrepreneurs.
In the past Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism has been used by BATNA Tech through the promotion surreyONE.com to get people involved in fundraising. 28 volunteers raised over $1,500 for one Surrey nonprofit organization (the Daniel Igali Foundation). As well we have been able to network together several organizations that are instrumental in facilitating key functions of the system. More than $10,000 in increased sales has been realized by Networking Business Partners of BATNA Tech from work performed or made possible by volunteers. To date more than 100 people to date have joined surreyONE.com which is an online promotion from BATNA Tech which encourages people to contribute to the community through networking and volunteerism.
I believe within the next 5 years over 500 businesses will be using BATNA Tech’s Volunteer to Entrepreneurial system to increase sales and reduce operating costs. More than 12,000 consumers will have made 1 or more transactions with the rewards program BATNA Play which helps subsidize overhead costs. 100s of individuals will have received entrepreneurial and or employment skill training with a minimum of 70% of participants starting a new business. Nonprofits will rely on Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism for measurable increases in annual fundraising and volunteers. Within the five year timeline I expect to have BATNA Tech grow Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism to other communities throughout British Columbia and Canada.
Recognized barriers may include finding businesses to offer attractive volunteer opportunities to encourage people to join and stay involved. Other concerns include keeping businesses that are formed through the system engaged as contributors. Lastly participants may have a difficult time understanding how to work the system to their advantage and thus lose motivation to complete training. These barriers will be addressed through social media and system adaptation from constant interaction and feedback gathering from participants. Businesses will receive rewards via volunteered services from other businesses and recognition for their contributions to Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism. Volunteers will receive quality online resources to motivate and direct them through training.

Partnerships to facilitate key functions of the system are developing. SEEDS will provide curriculum and facilitators for all business classes. START Kwantlen Richmond is providing volunteers from a reserve of 200 student. SIFE Kwantlen Surrey is conducting a contest with high schools to help students explore business. More than 20 businesses have joined surreyONE which is the BATNA Play branded for Surrey. Surrey Libraries has agreed to supply space for 1 year for the facilitation of a business series. The Surrey School District is presently reviewing a proposal for students to get involved.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
Focus is on youth and individuals who cannot afford nor be sponsored by the government to attend self employment and skills training in Surrey. Surrey was selected as it’s the largest and fastest growing municipality in British Columbia. Youth are being targeted to both engage the many available volunteers and to let them know entrepreneurialism is an option for their future. Unsponsored individuals are also being targeted to catch them from falling through the cracks by providing an option for them to become self employed properly.
Key internal organizational factors that enable Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism to operate and grow are the Task Schedule, BATNA Play Rewards, and surreyONE.com. These online applications have been designed and are owned by BATNA Tech. The Task Schedule allows participants to assign, negotiate, communicate and compensate for tasks. BATNA Play Rewards allows businesses access to self manage rewards to customers while creating repeat customers for the business and residual revenue to support Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism. The web site surreyONE.com teaches people how to succeed by volunteering and working together for the betterment of their neighbourhoods. These three key internal organizational factors are automated and require minimal supervision or maintenance.

Volunteer to Entrepreneurialism is designed to help businesses as well as individuals wishing to become entrepreneurs. For this reason we would like to provide volunteers to other BC Ideas businesses to help them realize their objectives. These opporunties for volunteers will ultimately strength networks for all participants. Our need for funding and help is to enable the concept to grow steadily.

Anacla(government capital of Huu-ay-aht First Nations)/Bamfield (home to the Bamfield Marine Science Centre & the Bamfield Community School):located on the isolated west coast of Vancouver Island. Many have identified the need for academic upgrading/learning supports/distance education to access opportunities. Many students in both communities have “fallen through the cracks”;BCS only teaches to grade 6/7 and students must leave the community for further education. When they return to the community they may have literacy challenges. Most work is seasonal in nature:people are largely underemployed. We have also identified that some employment opportunities that arise with HFN due to treaty implementation are not able to be filled by community members as they do not have the essential skills.

In partnership with the BCSA, supports network of volunteer tutors/learners in both communities.Volunteer tutors (primarily from BMSC)engaged.Trust and relationships are being built: more focus on increasing number of basic learners (hesitant about coming forward; more outreach to be done as well).Centre now boasts wi-fi access, 5 computers, 2 printers.FT literacy coordinator works at assessing learners at intake, identifies learning goals, communicates with tutors. Group tutoring sessions take place at the centre twice weekly, as well as at the Bamfield Community School. Additional one-on-one sessions arranged. We are building internal capacity to assess and evaluate learners with our own literacy coordinator by continuing to focus on professional development and mentoring with school district staff. In 2012/13, we will continue with more Essential Skills workshops and collaborative work with partners.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
A learner enters the Centre for the first time and is greeted by the Literacy Coordinator. It is a welcoming and culturally safe environment. They may use the computers, and the LC begins to build a relationship of trust with the learner. Over time, their goals are explored and identified. The LC is able to provide guidance on how the Centre can support those learning goals (courses through the school district, distance learning, or simply being matched with a tutor for a specific learning goal). The learner is supported through the process by the LC.
The LC may engage the learner in one of the Family Literacy Programs based at the Centre: healthy cooking classes, drum making workshops, cedar weaving. Perhaps the learner will use the lending library, or be assisted with a resume or job application. The LC will also be developing materials and outreach to those learners not currently accessing the program. The LC also supports the volunteer tutor network: meetings, appreciation events, and professional development.LC also organizes group tutoring sessions, which have proven to be the most successful, and identifies opportunities where one-on-one tutoring would be more appropriate.Monthly Workshop series (September-June, ten workshops): computer workshops, cooking classes have been successful. Additional financial literacy, and Essential Skills to be added as well. Door prizes will also be offered as incentive to attend this year in an effort to draw those learners who might most benefit to the workshops.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
The adult literacy provider consists of a part time outreach literacy coordinator at the BCSA. The partnership between our two programs has been very successful, forming into a structured literacy support program for adults in the region.Continued funding of this initiative would serve to strengthen these partnerships. As an integral part of its strategic plan, the nation is continuing to focus on developing literacy, employment, and a healthier community. The nation has recognized that working with its neighbours is integral to success, which is why we have negotiated a seat at the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. It is in this spirit that this project embraces the relationship with the community of Bamfield, the BCSA, the BMSC,SD70, and North Island College.

Community Centre opened in former health clinic in isolated village of Anacla (near Bamfield) February 2012; wifi/computers and literacy coordinator added. Volunteer tutors from Bamfield Marine Science Centre engaged. Suddenly there was a growing demand for education, upgrading, adult basic education, and people started to come. We witnessed individuals envisioning a different future for themselves, talking about healthier choices for themselves and for their families. We also noticed a stronger connection between the two communities--a former "reserve" of a self-governing First Nation and an isolated, west coast fishing village. Some of the people who were marginalized and ashamed of their education levels are coming forward because we created a safe environment for learning. The Centre/Literacy Coordinator are key pieces to link and connect these pieces of community. Learners are impacting those around them, and we envision this becoming ever more powerful as an agent of change.
Visitors to the Centre are assisted in identifying their own personal goals. They may simply want to use the computers to access information or learn how to use them for communication. Or, they may want to pursue adult basic education through supported learning. They may even want to explore their own culture and language. Our goal is to assist community members to be able to articulate their own goals, in education and in their own lives, and to support them in reaching those goals. It makes sense to us that this is good for them, good for their families and friends, and good for the community.
Learners are pursuing high school credits and are in the process of achieving graduation. Others are honing their skills in math courses online with Thompson Rivers University with volunteer tutor support so that they can train for employment with the nation. The connections between School District #70, the Bamfield Community School, and the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre have strengthened, and new collaborative work is taking place (e.g. Huu-ay-aht youth assisted with Marine Archaeology course during the Summer). Conversations are taking place that didn't occur before: people are excited about the opportunities that are emerging in their lives and int their community. Users brought books in for a makeshift lending library, and suddenly a large donation of books from Literacy Nanaimo was secured: the Centre now boasts a well used lending library. There are 20 active learners, and 50 regular users of the Centre. Trust and relationships are at the core of the project.
There are 15 learners enroled in courses for high school graduation credits this September. These individuals will begin to envison a new future for themselves: they will be employed by the nation, or by the Huu-ay-aht Development Corporation in fishing or forestry or other business ventures, or they will be employed by one of the other businesses that decides to "open shop" on Huu-ay-aht Treaty Settlement Lands (TSL). They will develop transferable skills and create a different future for themselves and their families with economic security and independence. Community members who are healthy and happy foster that "tipping point" of creating a healthier community for all.
The Literacy Coordinator position is funded as part of the nation's Education budget. However, the operation of the Centre is proving to be more expensive than budgeted for. Many of the renovations to retrofit the Centre from a "Health Clinic" have been already completed, but the daily costs (snacks for learners, paper, toner, supplies are proving to be more expensive than anticipated. Workshops are planned, but there is little budget to execute them. We were able to raise money this summer for some operating costs by offering the use of the Centre's wifi to campers and hikers from the West Coast Trail for a donation to "Anacla/Bamfield" Literacy. We are also planning bake sales and fundraisers to help support the work that the Centre does.

A spirit of collaboration and trusting relationships are the reason that the project exists. HFN is a treaty nation, with a well developed strategic plan for achieving a healthy community. The nation’s economic development arm, the Huu-ay-aht Development Corporation, owns and operates forestry, fishing and tourism companies and has a complete financial infrastructure located in Port Alberni. HFN also operates a successful culture and language program for pre-school children which is well attended and involves children, parents and volunteers. We are building upon the success of this program in assisting adults to achieve their academic dreams.
