Derechos del animal

Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are protecting wild animals in Bolivia:

Thanks to Juan Carlos Antezana and Nena Baltazar, eleven-year-old Tømas is not shining shoes on the streets of El Alto, Bolivia’s biggest and harshest slum. He is taking care of the pumas, monkeys and birds at the Inti Wara Yassi refuge in the country’s lush tropical region of Chapari.

KIDS OWN WISDOM

Brain science confirms: Humans are hard-wired at birth to empathize + to cooperate. So, why do we see rampant dysfunction and disconnection between people, nations, and the environment? Failure to engage + exercise inborn sensitivity to the interconnectedness of all life on earth is a major factor.

As with any natural born talent or skill, deep-seated tendencies (to empathize, etc.) need to be consistently drawn out and exercised for authentic development + integration. Lectures, at a certain point, are counter-productive.

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.

KOW's researched + tested, wide-ranging, open-ended questions engage groups of students in relevant, age-appropriate, enthusiastic discussions that consistently activate + consolidate emotional intelligence, critical thinking + win-win problem solving abilities.

What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?

1. To be recognized and respected as change agents in the area of social-emotional learning that spurs creative critical thinking, throughout the United States, other English-speaking countries, and Spanish speaking-countries, as well. (KOW is currently in the final stages of being professionally translated into Spanish.) We will achieve recognition and respect through: expansion of our materials into many more schools, speaking engagements, more active social media, creating mutually supportive professional alliances, and publication of a book (in the works) that describes the rational, research and results behind the design and unique approach of KIDS' OWN WISDOM.

2. Within a year: develop, classroom test and start selling the next 2-4 levels of KIDS' OWN WISDOM. (Our goal is to produce at least 10 more levels of KIDS' OWN WISDOM, serving all children, 4-15 years of age.)

3. To enlist adequate numbers of qualified sales representatives / trainers (preferably former or current teachers).

Your project

Project Support

Need #1

Message & Brand Strategy

Need #2

Digital Marketing Strategy

Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!

Our most pressing specific project need is to develop a stand-out presence in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) market with a powerfully compelling/coherent message that positions KIDS' OWN WISDOM (KOW) as the uniquely valuable resource it has proven itself to be. Once KOW gains national recognition, advanced levels of the program can be produced and distributed.

In addition to the logo we recently acquired, the following would help to create the stand-out presence KOW deserves: √ Consistent brand messaging that reflects KOW's vision and values, as well as its short and long-range benefits √ A more effective web site, capable of securely accepting credit cards √ Search engine optimization
√ Podcasting √ Video series √ Social media management √ Database integration

What three characteristics or qualities do you prioritize in working relationships/partnerships?

1.

Shared values as the basis of solid trust.

2.

Mutual respect for different, complementary strengths, making it possible to achieve far more than we could separately.

3.

Open, honest communication that prioritizes Big Picture goal of bringing KOW to maximum number of schools, worldwide.

Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.

Our organization, overall, is in need of solid business savvy in the following areas:

1.) Marketing the cumulative, multi-dimensional benefits derived from regular use of KIDS' OWN WISDOM.

2.) Accounting and database integration.

3.) Forging professional alliances, creating speaking engagements, interviews, etc.

... I'm completely open to guidance about what other activities and achievements are necessary to promote progress in this area.

Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.

I have given some attention to the above area, but never in a consistent way, because I had no confidence in how to achieve significant results. I've never formally worked with outside consultants, but the time is now for professional business guidance.

Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?

Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?

Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?

Impacto

Rank your three intended outcomes of this project:

1.

To rank as one of the most highly regarded approaches to impacting significant growth in empathy + critical thinking skills.

2.

To be internationally adopted as a tool for sparking and engaging kids' capacity to think + collaboratively problem solve.

3.

To activate the positive potential of education + to counter-balance the "standardizing" effect of most educational systems.

¿Cuál ha sido el impacto de la solución hasta la fecha?

With accurate and consistent implementation of KIDS' OWN WISDOM, teachers report: (1) More cooperation between students during indoor and outdoor activities = reduced bullying, reduced cheating, reduced pushing. (2) Even the most shy students participate in, and contribute to, KOW discussions - a crucial and important school readiness/success skill. (3) Distinct carry-over influence, both short and long-term, at taking more personal responsibility for decisions and choices. (4) Reduced need for repetition of instructions and behavior modification. (5) Marked increase in children's awareness, empathy and sensitivity towards others.

What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?

Functioning within the guidelines of a legitimate and successful business model will enable us to more quickly achieve one of our major goals: to donate KIDS' OWN WISDOM resources to schools, after school programs, institutions, etc, that cannot afford to purchase them.

We fully expect to be adopted in developing nations, as well as developed nations, and we project powerful alliance building with organizations that demonstrate similar values and results. Examples of 3 organizations we'd love to coordinate efforts with: Ashesi University Foundation, in Ghana (http://www.ashesi.org/), Shanti Children's Foundation, in Nepal (http://www.shantichildrensfoundation.org), and The Communiversity of South Africa (http://www.thecommuniversityofsouthafrica.com/).

Inicio (iniciativa piloto que acaba de empezar a ponerse en práctica)

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.

Most garments and accessories are made of leather that is tanned using toxic chemicals (mostly in India and China), which is destroying the watersheds of the areas and causing severe negative health outcomes for those who live within the vicinity. ATHENA Atelier provides an alternative to consumers who want to own quality leather goods and who wish to be environmentally and socially responsible. We use ancient, natural, non-toxic tanning methods so our customers don't have to sacrifice the environment to be a style-setter. We stimulate local place-based economies in diverse indigenous nations through our sourcing and local manufacturing. At our core, we acknowledge that we are all connected: earth, animals, and people, and we provide a platform for respectful and beneficial relations.

What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?

1) Solidify our customer base. We intend to reach an international market, through wholesaling to select boutiques in metropolitan cities, and through direct online sales via our website.
2) Increase production. We wish to have consistent manufacturing that will keep up with global demand.
3) Develop a growth plan. Currently we are in the start-up phase, and a demand for our product has been demonstrated. We will begin with limited wholesaling, but intend to expand in the next 5 years to having more international boutiques.

Your project

Project Support

Need #1

Consumer/Audience Acquisition

Need #2

Digital Marketing Strategy

Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!

We are a new consumer goods company (leather accessories, jewellery), and we have developed a moderate clientele in our hometown (Vancouver, BC); however, if we are to expand as planned, we will need to develop our international client base. Cities such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, Berlin and Paris have been identified as promising markets for our upscale artistically-inspired product. High-end materials, careful craftsmanship, and artful design place us in the luxury category. Furthermore, our product offers a significant advantage: we only use ethically-sourced, naturally tanned leather. While both the luxury and green markets are strong, we need to identify customers who belong to both categories. We need to clarify our message to communicate our brand's merits, and choose the appropriate medium to distribute this information. As we establish a growing customer base, we will need to adapt and increase our manufacturing processes.

What three characteristics or qualities do you prioritize in working relationships/partnerships?

1.

Problem-solving orientation and a positive attitude

2.

High skill level and consistency

3.

Respect, honesty, and dedication.

Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.

Support will be focused on our organization as a whole, primarily in structuring for growth and in identifying customer acquisition and appropriate online marketing strategies. With additional markets, we will need to have a solid plan for scaling-up our sourcing, manufacturing, and distribution processes. Naturally, staffing demands will increase, as well as legal implications. We would benefit from the input of a trained professional who has the big picture foresight to anticipate problems we might face, and contribute to our pool of solutions that will benefit us.

Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.

I have never worked with paid consultants, but I do have various business mentors. I meet with one of my mentors weekly, and since he owns an international footwear company he is able to provide sound advice when needed. However, he is not in the high-end market, which is distinct from the entry-market for consumer goods.
Additionally, I have attended a Social Venture Institute conference, where I had the good fortune to receive a few peer-to-peer mentoring consultations. I met with one Operations expert, and one Branding specialist.

Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?

Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?

Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?

Impacto

Rank your three intended outcomes of this project:

1.

Raise awareness of dangers of current leather tanning techniques and offer an ethical alternative

2.

Provide a desirable product that is ethical from sourcing to manufacturing and satisfies customer's needs

3.

Sustainable development of culturally-relevant economies in rural communities in Canada, elevation of First Nations knowledge

¿Cuál ha sido el impacto de la solución hasta la fecha?

I have travelled to an Algonquin Reservation and have tanned leather with experts there, reinvigorating the local interest in natural leather tanning and learning new skills. I have opened a boutique in a trendy Vancouver neighbourhood, where I have sold out of large portions of my inventory in 3 months. I have educated many people about the merits of ethical leather; shockingly, most people have no idea how toxic the leather industry is. ATHENA Atelier has been featured in numerous online publications. I have designed new styles of handbags, and have hired individuals with disclosed disabilities to assist in manufacturing. I have forged strong relationships with prominent First Nations to discuss opening leather tanneries in their territory.

What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?

With additional professional support we will be able to take this company from start-up to growth, with the real potential of changing how leather is produced internationally. Campaigns such as Greenpeace's "Fashion Detox" are forcing major companies (e.g. Zara, Levi's) to alter their sourcing and production to be more eco-friendly; however, no one has tackled leather yet.The European Union is moving towards all cars being 100% recyclable, hence the Chrome-tanned leather will not be appropriate anymore--this is just one of the many avenues for growth. Importantly, this project has the potential to stimulate rural economies and to provide culturally-relevant income to indigenous communities. Furthermore, in doing so, indigenous knowledge, skills, and traditions are respected and celebrated.

Demonstration Goats Farm

Unemployment and poverty are one of the major problems faced by so many Ugandan youth. This is more worsened by inadequate resources provided by the government to address the problem in comparison to the number of youths both educated and non educated.

Farming is one activity that has no boundaries, can be done by both the educated and the non educated and yet simple to start.

This is the reason that we would like to start off goat keeping.
It is a project that can address the problems identified above with no discrimination between academic levels.

Operando entre 1-5 años

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two

Acceso, Equidad.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging

There is a definite lack of animal care knowledge on the First Nations Reserves on Vancouver Island. None of the dogs are spayed or neutered, and most are not allowed indoors, or ever see a vet. Many puppies die from starvation due to parasite infestation, and many adults live their lives emaciated, dehydrated, injured and fearful. The reserve in gold river, bc has 51 single family dwellings. This is where Newbark has begun rescuing dogs in 2012, and hopes to continue helping the dogs there and create access to other reserves that need help with dogs.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

Spay and neuter all dogs and meet with councillors to talk about the importance of a spay and neuter bylaw ; educate about the need for health care for the dogs, including preventative, natural care and the importance of creating an alliance with a veterinarian so that the dogs receive proper care; begin to change perspectives about the role of dogs in their lives and community, focusing on the concept of "lifetime pet" and "companion animal"; offer rehoming services for unwanted dogs.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.

A family with two young children has 5 adult dogs that hang around their house and two are pregnant and two have puppies. Some of the puppies have died, some have been given away within the reserve and some ended up rehomed off the reserve through friends. There are seven puppies left here, for a total of 12 dogs. The family irregularly provides food to the dogs, but feels no true sense of responsibility for them. They say they don't really like them, but don't really care if they stay or go, either. Newbark offers to rehome the puppies and 3 of the 5 adults, and spay two of their choice of dogs and return them, vaccinated and treated for parasites. Newbark also provides a certificate for a vet appointment in one year's time so the two dogs can have vaccine boosters and more parasite treatments. Ideally, Newbark would like to create an alliance with a local veterinarian to regularly come onsite and do health checks, vaccines, parasite medication dispensing, etc. The family now has only two healthy and spayed dogs so it is not as much of a burden to offer them a daily meal. Newbark will also provide suggestions for buying dog food or raw diet, depending on the accessibility of both. As well as shelter solutions.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.

There are several other rescue societies on Vancouver island, and only one other society making significant inroads to First Nations Communities regarding animals, Big Heart. Newbark sees them as partners and resources, not competition. The main concept that sets Newbark apart from most other rescue societies is our willingness to physically go into these communities and offer compassionate and judgement-free help to any dogs that need it.

Historia de la fundación: Queremos saber acerca del momento en el que hiciste "¡Ajá!". Comparte la historia de dónde y cuándo el/los fundador(es) vio (vieron) el potencial de esta solución para cambiar el mundo.

Until I physically went myself to a first nations reserve, the issue of dogs on reserves was hearsay and gossip. It seemed a problem too big to tackle and too complicated to solve. When my friend and fellow animal rescuer, Melissa, told me about the online conversations she had been having with a member of the muchalaht first nation band in gold river, a two hour drive west from us, this restrictive perspective shifted. With a personal invitation to enter the reserve, and several band members requesting help with dogs, I felt a path open! After speaking directly with over 30 households, a bylaw to spay and neuter every animal before breeding age is the solution.

Por favor, describe el objetivo de tu iniciativa: un resumen de lo que están tratando de lograr

The main goal is to help the dogs live better lives. In order to achieve this now and for future generations, changing of perspectives regarding these animals is needed.

¿Cuál ha sido el impacto de la solución hasta la fecha?

Ten dogs rescued from gold river, eight dogs rescued from port hardy reserve, two dogs rescued from northern mainland bc. We are in discussion with the band council of the muchalaht first nation about enforcing a spay and neuter bylaw, and how Newbark can help the members gain access to these and other services to care for the dogs.

Cuál es tu impacto proyectado para los próximos 5 años?

We hope that enforced spaying and neutering of dogs on first nations reserves increases the quality of life for the animals; and, that seeing the positive impact of proper care, thus prevents households from bringing new puppies into the world, or onto the reserves, to "replace" the previously sick, older ones. Starting with the muchalaht, perhaps many more reserves can be helped by example. Newbark is prepared to help long term.

¿Qué barreras pueden dificultar el éxito de tu proyecto? ¿Cómo planean superarlas?

In any community, there are people who resist change. Through persistence and contact consistency, examples of positive change, education and access hopefully these attitude barriers can be overcome. Also, a little humour goes a long way!

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging

Ethnoveterinary medicine is the scientific term for traditional animal health care. Research into ethnoveterinary medicine is often undertaken as part of a community-based approach that can contribute to farm incomes, maintain the resilience of farm communities, promote self-reliance and contribute to a safe and good quality food supply; in addition to providing improved and affordable livestock health care. It can strengthen rural community capacity building, leadership and skills development. As such it can serve as a contributor to the economic survival for needy communities; A widely disseminated ethnoveterinary manual can help preserve the ethnomedicinal heritage of British Columbia. The manual would provide a locally-based sustainable long-term solution to animal health problems.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

Disseminating ethnoveterinary medicines which are community-derived technological solutions to farmers’ animal health problems that are based on affordable traditional knowledge. A manual already exists: Bevan J, Lans C, Mathias M. (Eds). 2004. Alternative animal health care in British Columbia. A manual of traditional practices used by herbalists, veterinarians, farmers and animal caretakers. The Traditional Animal Health Care Collaborative. University of Victoria. SSHRC funding: Traditional animal health care in British Columbia. I propose to add removable data collecting forms with my address to the existing manual and print enough copies for each library in British Columbia. Borrowers with ethnoveterinary knowledge can fill in the forms and post them to me. I can validate the knowledge using the UBC library and online databases and add the new ethnoveterinary practices to future versions of the ethnoveterinary manual. This solution eliminates the need for transportation funding.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.

Affordable and available health care is an important constraint to animal production in many rural communities. Farmers need low-cost alternatives to veterinary drugs. Sheep farmers in Ontario and British Columbia have claimed that sustainable production is not economically viable because of internal parasites. Original funding came from the SSHRC Research Development Initiative Project Title: Traditional animal health care in British Columbia: Testing an innovative dissemination method. Most of the data was collected from March to November 2003. The research area covered the most populated parts of British Columbia: Vancouver Island as far north as Port Alberni, the lower mainland and areas in the Interior (Armstrong, Chase, Salmon Arm, Kelowna,Cawston and Fauquier). I will add removable data collecting forms with my address to the existing manual and print enough copies for each library in British Columbia. Library borrowers with ethnoveterinary knowledge can fill in the forms and post them to me. I can validate the ethnoveterinary knowledge that they have provided on these forms using the UBC library and online databases and add the new ethnoveterinary practices to future versions of the ethnoveterinary manual. This solution eliminates the need for transportation funding.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.

Everyone working in holistic animal health care is both peer and competitor. Sixty research participants in 2003 were either organic farmers, animal breeders and trainers, or other specialists in alternative medicine and holistic veterinarians. They were willing to share their knowledge in order to obtain a manual of all the documented practices. Since I am a interested in research, validation and dissemination, I may undercut the sales of a few practitioners but I may also interest members of the general public to investigate holistic practitioners. I have spent years validating the practices and publishing them which people with clinics would not have time to do. I live close to the UBC library. Larger university libraries are more likely to have the necessary journals and books.

o To help agricultural rural communities share their alternative solutions for animal health problems and disseminate the already collected ethnoveterinary practices in British Columbia.
o To update a manual on ethnoveterinary medicine in British Columbia by putting data collection forms into the back of printed copies that will be placed in each library in British Columbia.
The manual describes the preparation, use and efficacy of ethnoveterinary medicines in a form that is relevant to British Columbia and globally, and it can be understood by farmers and the general public. The manual is not designed to replace standard veterinary information. Sixty copies were given to research participants in 2004. Now I hope to place a copy in each BC library and to update the information.

The manual will be disseminated throughout BC at low cost. Library borrowers can use the manual to contribute to rural incomes, maintain the resilience of rural communities, promote self-reliance and contribute to an internationally recognized safe and good quality food supply; in addition to providing improved and affordable livestock health care. It will strengthen rural community capacity building, leadership and skills development. As such it fits the mandate of serving as a contributor to the economic survival for needy communities. The interest in sustainable agriculture is driven by several concerns: revival of the small family farm; a general unease with the impacts of agribusiness practices; a desire for greater levels of civic engagement, and the hope for profits.

¿Qué barreras pueden dificultar el éxito de tu proyecto? ¿Cómo planean superarlas?

Library borrowers may not know of the manual or that they can add information on the data forms at the back and return these.
Reminders through the library system that the manual is available and that data forms can be filled in and returned. Reminders through farm and rural newsletters and bulletins. Borrowers may not consider their knowledge to be valuable. Again ask the libraries to link to my slideshare presentations and already published research papers.

It is claimed that only drug companies with sales of US$5 billion can engage in traditional validation and drug discovery so this research will evaluate the ethnoveterinary plants used with a non-experimental method. This method consists of:

1. obtaining an accurate botanical identification
2. determining whether the folk data can be understood in terms of bioscientific concepts and methods
3. searching the chemical / pharmaceutical/ pharmacological literature for the plant’s known chemical constituents and to determine the known physiological effects of either the crude plant, related species, or isolated chemical compounds that the plant is known to contain. To assess whether the plant use is based on empirically verifiable principles.

I will need volunteers to contribute time to remind borrowers that the manual is available and that is has forms that can be filled out and returned.

Conservatiopreneur, conservation and developing small economy in coast area

Wonorejo district is one of the coast areas which have bad condition in mangrove habitat. The case about mass deforestation which happened in Wonorejo last year has been decreasing the habitat of mangrove plants rapidly. The risk is, the coast citizen will be threaten by sea flood. Although the deforestation is forbidden by the government, the damage of mangrove tree is still happen. Indeed we have to make movement quickly to decrease the damage of mangrove habitat. The economy of wonorejo’s citizen is also low so the people cannot life in the right standart.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

we know that low economy rate of people make them do everything to survive. in that case, people in wonorejo do the same thing such as sell the wood of mangrove and destroy the habitat to make fish pond. the best solution to make people care from herself is from economic aspect. conservatiopreneur is a new way of entrepreneurship which combine the entrepreneur and nature conservation. the idea is making syrup from mangrove fruits which usually thrown as rubbish. the research about syrup mangrove it is finish and the result is good but many people still unknown about it.

El Modelo: Muéstranos a través de un ejemplo específico cómo tu solución hace una diferencia, incluye tus actividades primarias

Conservatiopreneur is a way that combine economic and conservation aspects. The first model is making a forum joining the native citizen that concern in developing mangrove tree. I know that many mangrove habitat is near the fish pond so I make corporation with the fish pond guide to make association. The association is “Perkumpulan Petani Mangrove” which headed by mr. Muhson Soni. The goal of the association is to take care mangrove tree until they can life without problem such as rubbish and destroyer. The first step of my plan can have result to make entrepreneurship condition in wonorejo people.
Second, Me and my team have a big influence about explain the beneficial of mangrove tree and the importance of mangrove tree to human. So, we plan to make students association to make coorperation with wonorejo people association. In the easy way, we (students) act as a marketer from mangrove product to sell all of the country. We consider that the present world is dominated by young people. We named our association as “Consuat. Conservatiopreneur Students Association”.
As we know, we have to make brand from our product so we can compete with other commercial product in real market. The last, both organization combine as one organization named “Es air Laut” that only have goal to sell product about syrup and making franchise.

we have several peers such as drink company and booth maker. the all of our peers is coorporate to succed the "Es Air Laut" brand.
we have a lot of competitor with the same product. in the other city in indonesia some people have same product like us. but our superior is way of marketing that drive by teenagers. so, we have special marketing to reach all market especially in the 18-30 in age. the franchise model that we use also make us more known.

the present impact is people in wonorejo district don't difficult to looking for money because the product is easy to make and have big benefit. people in wonorejo just be as technical service such as cooking, packing and guide. the branding and marketing is managed by students. and the important things is the habitat of mangrove tree is not destroyed anymore bacause of people care. the conservation of mangrove also have fund source from the profit of "es air laut" selling product.

¿Cuál es tu impacto proyectado para los próximos 1-3 años?

in the next 1-3 years the product will spread all of the country. because the franchise system facilitate indonesian people to be an entrepreneur. the product will dominate the unique drink market in indonesia. furthermore, mangrove conservation can be held in all of our country because the money can we get from the profit. our city also have special souvenir that show the trully surabaya.

¿Qué barreras pueden dificultar el éxito de tu proyecto? ¿Cómo planean superarlas?

the big barrier is the people's care about our project. many coast citizen still have traditional mind to past the problem. we also little blocked to drive this project because of government rules.as a student we have to determine our time between project and study oriented. but, all barrier can be overcome if we have high motivation and spirit to heal the nature and bring entrepreneurship spirit.

La necesidad: ¿Cuál es el problema que tratas de solucionar?

The problem: unnecessary inefficiency and suffering in the food chain.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

We are trying to make the food chain more efficient by using vegetable protein instead of animal protein to produce meat. There are a lot of vegetable crops that have the nutritive value and structure that animal meat has. The benefits are: a significant reduction of the use of natural resources, a significant reduction of the emission of greenhouse gasses, a significant increase in worldwide foodstock, a growth in employment and elimination of mass animal suffering.

El Modelo: Muéstranos a través de un ejemplo específico cómo tu solución hace una diferencia, incluye tus actividades primarias

We produce chicken, meatballs, tuna and other products out of soybeans. We also use a Dutch grown bean called Lupine, which has an even smaller footprint, because it does not have to be imported. Unfortunately this bean is grown on a small scale, so we cannot use it for all of our products yet.

For 1 kilo of meat one needs 7 kilos of soy. We use the soy to make to meat, rather then feed the animals with it and make them into meat products.

The products have the same nutritional value as animal meat and taste even better. Especially considering all the benefits.

Our peers are all consumers that like to eat meat.

Our competitors are the producers of meat and meat replacers.

We are better than the producers of animal meat, because this form of production cannot last forever. Our production of vegetable meat on the other hand is sustainable.

We are better than producers of meat replacers because our products resemble meat very well, better then any other meat replacer in the Dutch market.

Select the stage that best applies to your business

Operating for 1-5 years

Impacto social

leer más↑ ocultar↑ ocultar

What is the social impact you have had to date and how you measure it?

We see a growth in demand for meat replacers. Our business model raises awareness concerning the production and consumption of meat and consumers are considering to eat vegetarian more regularly. Because with our products the consumer does not have to miss out on the nutritional value, taste and structure of meat. In 1,5 year we created 160 selling points in the Netherlands.

On a bigger scale a vegetarian lifestyle is social to people that live in starvation: there is enough food in the world, but it is divided in an inefficient and unjust way.

What barriers might hinder the success of your business? How do you plan to overcome them?

As we already mentioned the Dutch bean called Lupine is being cultivated on a small base. We are lobbying with farmers and the Dutch government to grow this Lupine business. But so far there is not much corporation from these conventional parties. We would love to see a change for the better. It is always better to use local foods, so we don't have to import soy for our products.

Sostenibilidad

leer más↑ ocultar↑ ocultar

How does your model address financial, social, and environmental sustainability?

The products we develop are being sold to consumers and businesses for a profitable price. So far the products are more expensive than animal meat. For the price to drop we need to increase demand and we need to optimalise our production. For the latter we work together with producers in the food chain, for the first we will need to find more partners for marketing opportunitiies.

Awareness & learning

leer más↑ ocultar↑ ocultar

How do you see social entrepreneurship contributing to the improvement of developing countries?

Developing countries deserve the same chance we have for wealth and happiness. For that basic needs have to be fulfilled: food, water, housing and education.

Our concept helps to bring more efficiency and justice in local and worldwide food systems, giving developing countries a better chance in feeding their people.

What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?

The visit to the organic vanilla farm. I would love to see this great example of a fair and sustainable farm in a developing country. To learn how it works in practice and what has to be done to implement this all over the world.

La necesidad: ¿Cuál es el problema que tratas de solucionar?

bullying is a problem rooted in a perspective of separation – us vs. them.

it is that perspective , that focus on what is different rather than what is similar, that leads to low self-esteem, jealousy of others’ abilities or possessions, and, ultimately, verbal, mental, emotional, and even physical abuse of those seen as “different than me”.

when we show children how each of their particular gifts fits into the puzzle of life, they learn how to work together, how to combine their different abilities in order to achieve a common goal.

they learn to respect each others’ gifts.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

children need to be encouraged to respect and appreciate each others’ abilities.

my 6th grade teacher knew one solution: round table groups, consisting of one top (a) student, one lower end (d) student and two average (b & c) kids.
the kids helped each other and everyone’s grades went up.
best part was, we changed tables for each subject, so even if you were “d” at the math table, you could be “a” at the art table!

children also need to be shown the benefits of cooperation vs. competitiveness, as well as how to cultivate compassion and understanding in daily life.

peer tutoring and counseling, thru the sharing of personal stories (good and bad) helps kids to realize they’re not alone in their experiences.

El Modelo: Muéstranos a través de un ejemplo específico cómo tu solución hace una diferencia, incluye tus actividades primarias

after the first bell on monday morning, teacher asks how everyone’s weekend was. sierra takes this moment to mention that her beloved dog, iggie, has died, presenting the opportunity for a class discussion on death and grieving, which reminds sierra that she is not alone in her pain.

at lunch sierra is approached by cheyanne, a girl who has never spoken to her before. cheyanne tells sierra of how her mommy and daddy died in a car accident two years before, and how she still misses them terribly. sierra comforts cheyanne, reminding her that they’ll see their lost loved ones again someday.

as the last round tables of the day gather, jimmy realizes that, although teacher never says, he has been the “d” at every table he has sat at today. his friend frank, the “a”, realizes it, too. so, as soon as everyone is seated, frank announces that it’s “opposite day” – “a” is “d”, “b” is “c”, and “d” is “a”, putting jimmy in charge. the table gets a “b” on their project that day, and jimmy goes home with a new sense of worth.

after class, teacher is satisfied, not exhausted, having saved time and lessened daily stress.

i really don’t know who is doing anything like this at the classroom level anymore. i’m sure there are teachers in every country and state who do implement methods like this but i don’t even know if there are accepted standards used in all schools. there should be.

i don’t see this as a “competitive” thing. i see it more as a practical, common sense way to structure the school day. of course, these methods would need to be accepted and implemented at the classroom level by actual teachers, with the biggest challenge coming from simple human resistance to change.

¿Cuál ha sido el impacto de la solución hasta la fecha?

i know that the methods my 6th grade teacher showed me left a lasting impression on me, and, i imagine, the rest of my class as well.

i have used the model of peer encouragement throughout my life, whether i have been teaching preschoolers, working with afterschool programs, teaching arts and crafts to children and adults, or managing employees in a retail setting.

being aware of, and knowing how to work with, your own strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of others, takes a tremendous amount of empathy , tolerance, patience and understanding, but the payoffs are worth it.
the sooner we start to teach our children these things, the sooner we will see a more respectful, compassionate world.

¿Cuál es tu impacto proyectado para los próximos 1-3 años?

as children learn new ways of dealing with each other, they will take the lessons home with them, as well as into the future.

they will also have more confidence in their ability to deal with what life throws at them, knowing that they are not alone in whatever they do or experience.

in time, perhaps society will become a little more of a kinder, gentler place to live, a place where all abilities are respected equally.
and a place where no one feels the need to belittle others in order to build themselves up.

¿Qué barreras pueden dificultar el éxito de tu proyecto? ¿Cómo planean superarlas?

the only major barrier i see is the natural human instinct to resist change.

we get so used to doing things a certain way that, even when it’s no longer working, we are loathe to try something new.

the only way to overcome this tendency is to prove beyond a doubt that the new way works better than the old way.

of course, in order to do that, you always have to find a few people willing to “color outside of the lines” before it’s called “art”.

finding those people is the way to overcome the barriers.

i have noticed that people just don’t seem to be as respectful of each other’s right to be as they used to be.

while things like bullying have always existed, they seem to have reached new lows, and not just among schoolchildren. nowadays we find bullying everywhere, from classrooms to boardrooms, from ballgames to rush hour traffic.

we seem to have forgotten that we are all equal parts of one whole. as people say, we don’t seem to know any better anymore.

i can’t just stand by and watch this happen without at least trying to remind people of what is better.
and where better to start than the children, who are in the process of learning how the world works anyway?

Tell us about your personal background. Why are you passionate about this issue? Making an idea a reality takes innovation, dedication and strong leadership. Do you have the necessary entrepreneurial skills to realize your vision?

The idea behind The Great Primate Handshake began in a tent in South Africa, where I was volunteering at The Vervet Monkey foundation, a sanctuary for orphaned or injured monkeys, and using my skills as a videographer to help promote their work.

There I met Alasdair Davies who was making a website for the organisation. Alasdair and myself were unique among the volunteers as we were volunteering to do something different.

Like us the other volunteers had skills, degrees and many were professionals in different areas including digital media. These volunteers wanted to help and were undertaking key tasks, that were needed but were not utilising their proven skill sets and therefore not being the best that they could be.

Through Alasdair and myself's shared love of digital media and travel we came up with a unique idea. To travel across Africa visiting different conservation projects and create digital media tools for them free of charge, funded by paid volunteers.

We wanted to create a project where skills not typically sought after, but were a great help, could be utilised.
Therefore by raising awareness about conservation using primates as a flagship species, we could help people on both a local and international level better understand their environment and the world they live in and how to help protect it.

In short we wanted to; Travel, Create and Educate.

It took three years of blood, sweat and tears to get the first expedition off the ground and since 2008 we have run 6 trips across three countries; Kenya, Uganda and South Africa.

Each trip sees us lead a team of 20+ volunteers and our global reach has seen us have over 66,000 YouTube views and we average over 100,000 website hits a month.

We are now looking at expanding our vision to include more projects, countries and communities and create a global handshake.

La necesidad: ¿Cuál es el problema que tratas de solucionar?

There are many worthwhile conservation organisations working in our current target countries: Kenya, Uganda and South Africa. Whilst these organisations do great work they do not have the funding to create media content, such as websites or films, to promote the fantastic work they do to raise both awareness and funds on a global and often more importantly a local level.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

Our solution is to take the expertise and equipment to the front door of these organisations, we can ask them directly what their digital needs are and immediately make them into a reality.

Volunteers pay for the experience to travel across an amazing African country, such as Uganda, whilst learning from media professionals and each other which in turn creates a unique skill sharing environment. The volunteers fund the project allowing all content that is created to be provided free of charge to those that need it most.

We utilise an overland truck, typically used to take those looking for adventure tourism, and change this up by creating an eco-tour where the tourists become media creators for conservation organisations whilst traveling at the same time.

We drive right to where the content is needed, and work with the local educators and community to involve them in every step of the process, therefore widening the reach of the skills that are shared.

El Modelo: Muéstranos a través de un ejemplo específico cómo tu solución hace una diferencia, incluye tus actividades primarias

Firstly, when we arrive at a location we meet with the staff and learn about the organisation we are creating content for.
We listen to their needs and ideas and create a plan based upon their aims and objectives.

The volunteers and Handshake staff will then make a plan and work with the staff on the ground to put it into action.

For example, Chimpanzee Eden is a sanctuary in South Africa, for them we created a package of content which worked on several levels.

Our team of volunteers produced a silent animation on why it is not good to use primates in the media which could be shown to an international audience without a language barrier getting in the way.

This was coupled with a teachers' pack that local educators could use to engage groups of children before, during and after their visit.
To finish off, an activity pack was created where the students could make a Recycled Rainforest (complete with video).

These teaching aids have proved invaluable in really enabling the educators on the ground to interact with their students with fresh content that enriches their learning experience, by making it a multi-platform learning experience. By using video and animation as well as more traditional education techniques, individual students' different learning styles could be catered for.

Other examples of created content include:

For example, we have built websites for many sanctuaries including The Vervet Monkey Foundation: http://www.enviro.co.za/

We have helped raise awareness of the widespread use of Chimpanzees as pets and by the film industry for Jane Goodall's Chimp Eden: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0x_MUhoLjI

And helped to promote the work of technology such as the One Laptop Per Child Foundation (OLPC) laptop in schools in developing nations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR6udGcnxyg

There are several competitors in the international volunteering circuit including organisations that pair willing volunteers from around the world and take them to projects where support is needed. Fantastic work is done by these organisations, but none feature a project, like ours, that utilises volunteers with a passion for digital media in the way that the Great Primate Handshake does.

Other competitors would include organisations that take people and provide media training in Africa. Again this is different from us as the content created is used for training purposes and not used for a longer term aim of supporting conservation projects.

What is the social impact you have had to date and how you measure it?

Each time we revisit a country we have a specific research team that speak to the people we have created content for to examine how our material has been used and to evaluate its effectiveness.

We also get feedback from the projects we support, often with information on how the content has been used, in class rooms; at fundraisers; etc.

Statistics on both our Website and YouTube channel are also analysed, but we have found it difficult to know via the web how we have affected the end user.

Our biggest social impact is on the individuals that volunteer with us. Many volunteer due to the digital media element, but questionnaires before, during and after tell us that our process encourages individuals to be socially and environmentally responsible in their ongoing career.

What barriers might hinder the success of your business? How do you plan to overcome them?

The business is at risk of becoming stale if we do not grow, expand and reflect effectively upon the work that we do.

We are continually looking at how our content has been used and how it will be used in the future. We have worked in each country twice now, it would be simple to go back and repeat the work that we have done. However, if we were to do that, the content wouldn't be needed and everything would fall flat.

Our goal going forward is to explore the educational need and how the content can be used both locally and globally. Part of this is assessing the way our content is received and interpreted by all users.

Sostenibilidad

How does your model address financial, social, and environmental sustainability?

Our business model takes those willing to support a volunteer experience, often by raising the money to cover their costs through fundraising initiatives which in turn act as promotion.

The funds raised then power the trips and provide media equipment and expertise that would otherwise cost £1000's, free of charge to those who would benefit from it the most.

By taking people that are looking at travelling whilst giving back to the country they are within we act as an 'eco-tour'.
However we are aware that flying people around the world then traveling on an overland truck may not appear to be the most environmental method of travel so we counter this to limit the impact on the planet.

We pride ourselves on being an ethically aware company, within each and every thing we do we reflect upon the social and environmental impact.
With our trips that include travel we offset this by working with a company called Tree Flights. We also visit the sites where the trees are planted, and therefore work directly with the communities that we support.

This goes further down the line, encompassing everything from the companies we choose to work with to the t-shirts we put on the volunteers' backs.

How do you see social entrepreneurship contributing to the improvement of developing countries?

The thing I love the most about traveling is meeting people, both the people we take on the trip and the ones we meet whilst moving through the country.

What is amazing about this is talking through ideas with people and turing an idea into a reality.

Because I do this whilst I am on a project that was once a dream to me, the people that I work with see this and are in-turn inspired to aim higher, from a volunteer who is thinking about running their own business or a dance troop in Uganda who want to make what they are doing financially viable.

I believe that positive movements with lasting impact begin at the grassroots, and that by supporting small groups of motivated and passionate people, great things can be achieved. This applies in so many ways to the work of the Handshake: the committed people we work with in-country, the volunteers who want to use their skills for good, and the people at home who find inspiration in our work.

What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?

As I have already spent some time traveling through Uganda I have already been through both some of the challenges and rewards, but this would not detract from the experience, as each new trip reveals new things and opens my eyes to yet more amazing aspects of the country.

I love to throw myself into new situations and see both the work of other organisations and evaluate how my own skills can be of use towards a greater benefit and collaboration.
Working with people on the ground to make a shared goal a reality will be both the challenge and the reward.

It is people that have the power to make a difference and this comes from communication and creation.

Meat production at current levels is not sustainable. There is a distinct lack of restaurant options for vegetarians/vegans and opening a chain for that purpose would have a huge market now, and these restaurants would also avoid packaging, and aim to be wholly enviromentally friendly. I am passionate about this cause because in the UK and elsewhere it's a glaring option to help us think about how the food we consume affects the planet.

Tell us the story of your idea or project

It all began when Kelvin, a 10 week old Chocolate Labrador Retriever belonging to our VP, came to school one day. Kelvin made an impact on even the toughest students, and this gave our Principal time to “paws” and think…What if dogs were in the school on a regular basis? Is there a way to do this? From there, with a dog-loving staff, supportive superintendents, a large empty room, and lots of green space, an idea became a reality. “UNDER ONE WOOF” was created.

This full semester 4 Credit package provides students with the opportunity to learn how to run a small business and care for dogs. Students are responsible for walking the dogs, playing with them, cleaning up after them, teaching basic obedience and learning about dogs and their behaviours.

West Credit Secondary School is a vocational high school and is home to approximately 500 students. It is geared to providing unique pathways for students who may be graduating with a Certificate or Diploma. Adding a program that was centred around the growing animal care industry seemed to be a perfect addition to the school. Not only are students gaining knowledge and experience in a new and exciting area, but they are also being taught many soft skills as well. Research indicates that the pet industry is often considered recession-proof and is expected to top $50 billion in revenue in 2011. This is certainly a job market that is viable and profitable for our students.

While the program is just starting out, research indicates that providing such a program will reap huge benefits for the students and school. “Dog care and training programs provide direct links to basic communication and social skills. Patience and positive reinforcement are key skills practiced among classmates as well as the dogs. Activities and group discussion teach students how to handle interpersonal conflicts and develop constructive responses. (Pollyea, 1997). Evidence also suggests positive effects using dogs with children with ASD, behavior issues, and students with intellectual disabilities. Already, some of our hardest to serve youth are showing improvement in their behavior and attitude towards school. For students, working with dogs can “help build skills such as empathy, sympathy, sharing, turn- taking, and caring” (Hyde and Kurdek, 1983). Issacs (1998) reported that “the use of a dog seemed to greatly enhance social interaction of autistic children through petting and touching , increasing eye contact, attention span, affect and affection.” The beauty of this program, at a vocational school, is that it allows students to take care of pets, helps teach them responsibility and confidence. Plus they learn skills which will assist them later in a job connected to the animal industry. Students interact with each other and with the dogs in a manner far different from that of the regular classroom. To see them in action is truly inspiring.

Please tell us about the social impact of your idea or proect

Within our own community, the social impact is creating bonds between people in the program and those utilizing the daycare. We are developing a new generation of leaders as they demonstrate what they have learned and how dogs are a social lubricant in society.

This can be transferable to the First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples as students can be given an opportunity to be advocates for “dogs” as a pet within a family and the greater community. Students can develop a sense of responsibility, empathy and understand what it means to be needed.

Your Future Goal(s): Tell us what you hope to achieve with your idea or project in the next year

Expand our program by creating more physical space and teaching new skills, such as dog grooming.

In 5 years, what will be different as a result of your idea/project?

We will further develop and strengthen our relationship with a local college that offers related post-secondary dog programming. We will increase our students employability skills to ensure a sucessful transition to the workplace.

In addition, we would like to develop specific programming to meet the needs of more students that are identified as being "at risk". We will also focus on other vulnerable sectors such as those students with "physical and learning disabilites".

Tell us about the people/ partnerships that are already involved and why they are important to your idea or project.

Within our building we have a number of staff that have been trained in pet first aid. This is important because it provides additional "trained" support when needed. Our clients are staff pets. This is important because staff are influential spokespeople in the school and the broader community.

There are also several community partners that are experts in the field of dogcare that support our program, either as guest speakers (guide dogs, therapy dogs, police dogs) or as volunteers (municipal animal services officer, vet technician, etc.).

If there are other people/partners that you will reach out to tell us who they are and why they will be important to your idea or project.

We would like to strengthen our students' transition into the world of work by developing partnerships with dog-related businesses (dog daycares, pet stores, dog groomers, etc.). This future network of potential employers will provide our students, even the most challenging ones, with contacts in the industry.

Describe the kinds of support you receive (other than money) or will need to support your idea or project (e.g.: donated, space, equipment and volunteers)

We currently receive donations from within the school such as used toys, beds and blankets. We also have a volunteer who is a professional trainer in the community.

Some of the things we will need are:
Dog training equipment and supplies
Dog grooming equipment
Dog daycare equipment (beds, blankets, water bowls, leashes, harnesses)
Technology and training to fully utilize available social media

Do you currently have funding for your idea or project?

Kids Science Challenge – New tools for proving science is COOL!

¿Qué cambios quieres traer al mundo?

The Kids Science Challenge (KSC) aims to empower 3rd through 6th graders to discover the fun of STEM subjects, to overcome any cynicism they may have about them, and to envision themselves as bold innovators – all before becoming teenagers. Through its national online competition, KSC allows kids the opportunity to experience inquiry-based learning and engage in 3 annual science fields. Recognizing that there are certain populations who are not afforded the same exposure to online education at school or at home, KSC aims to bring this hands-on opportunity to this underrepresented demographic through after-school program partnerships as well.

¿Cuáles son las actividades principales de tu proyecto?

KSC selects 3 science topics yearly & for each, a team of expert scientists. Kids, parents & teachers can learn more about these topics at www.kidsciencechallenge.com via online tools that catalyze creative thinking: videos, hands-on activities, games, & curricula. Kids learn that scientists are regular folks, just like them & their parents. They learn that science deals with real stuff from real life & that science can help to solve problems that are part of their future.
Year 3 of KSC included: Magical Microbes, Super Stuff for Sports, & Sensational Sounds. This year, our topics will include: Meals on Mars: Come up with new ways to preserve, cook, deliver or sustainably produce food in flight or on Mars; Animal Smarts: Design a toy, game/experiment that enhances the life of a pet or zoo animal & demonstrates its intelligence; and Zero Waste: Invent a package that never has to see a landfill.
Students are presented a question and tasked to come up with a solution for one of the teams of scientists they’ve studied. Their submissions, a short essay and optional drawing, convey their unique idea and are judged by a panel of educators/scientists.
Prizes are given to winning students for each topic. Grand prize winners travel to collaborate with scientists to see their idea come alive. This work is filmed for all the KSC virtual community to see. There are additional cool prizes for the winners & runners-up as well as Kids’ Choice prizes. Free hands-on activity kits with experiments mirroring the work of KSC scientists are sent to the first 1,000 entrants yearly.

¿Qué es innovador acerca de tu iniciativa? ¿Cómo es que es un nuevo aporte al campo?

KSC demystifies science and scientists & makes science relevant. KSC specializes in grades 3-6, engaging kids who don’t think of themselves as science types who express minimal interest in science, 2/3 of whom have never experience a science contest, club or camp. KSC website offers interactive games & activities pulling kids in as they learn about the scientific topics and methods relevant to the featured challenges. Only the KSC COPPA compliant site contains interactive games & activities designed to help kids brainstorm ideas and put their entries together. Overall the KSC site appears to be the most kid-friendly site among those reviewed by evaluators, Knight Williams. Furthermore, KSC encourages the kids to make the intellectual leap to come up with their own idea, and to think of science creatively and not to simply regurgitate information.

One parent wrote: Since participating in KSC, my son’s mind becomes active with possibilities. He dreams about ways he can use his creative scientific ideas in the future. For example, he voiced a strong desire to eradicate the world of invasive funguses before they begin to mutate & attack more vertebrates, as last year at school, his class studied the fungus that is causing certain species of frogs globally to become extinct. He began to consider applying models found in nature to other fields, just as he'd done in KSC by using model of the spider's web and applying it to the field of tree- and building- climbing safety gear .I believe it opened his mind to how science relates to many different aspects of the world.

KSC reaches out to kids in all sectors of the US. Our promotion plan has had two basic components. The first is a grassroots effort. This effort is expanding our target markets from 40 to 50 cities across the US, where we contact Girl Scouts, 4H, homeschool organizations, after-school groups, science coordinators, libraries and museums. We reach these markets through phone and email encouraging them to put KSC brochures in their venue, and include the KSC on their list servs. This coming year the KSC will be adding additional support elements to teachers helping them to better use the KSC in their classroom.

The second is aimed at its adult audience of parents and educators, while the other at a youth demographic. Metzner’s Pulse of the Planet radio series which extensively covers the KSC topics and winners during the contest season reaches a daily audience of 425,000 adults, who listen on 209 public and commercial broadcast outlets, pulseplanet.com’s RSS feed, iTunes podscasts, and the websites of 89 newspapers nationwide. Each year of the competition, Pulse broadcasts 10 to 15 programs on every KSC scientist, with a credit line that includes the KSC website.

Compartir la historia del fundador y lo que inspiró al fundador para iniciar este proyecto

Since 1989, Jim Metzner has produced “Pulse of the Planet,” a radio series heard by millions weekly. Realizing he was not reaching youth, aware of challenges they were inheriting, he came up with the KSC to counter extremely low science accomplishments of students nationally by ‘hooking’ kids with fun, cool science, without dumbing material down. He was able to secure funding from the National Science Funding for the initial 4 years of the program, and has helped promote the KSC through his radio program, with programs related to the fields in the competition, as well as covering the scientists involved in the KSC.
Jim’s greatest inspiration comes from stories told by parents/teachers: a shy 3rd grader becoming a confident leader of friends as she explored science over vacation, a sick child gathering buddies to invent a tongue depressor made of candy, a 9-year-old collecting water samples from grass and turf soccer fields to compare water quality, presenting results at a major scientific conference.
Jim plans to continue the development and expansion of the KSC. He wants to expand the afterschool program from its prototype in LA to San Francisco, NYC, and Dallas and beyond. He is forming partnerships with existing programs which will facilitate this expansion. Jim is involved in every aspect of the development of these programs as executive director of KSC, and with increased funding, will be freed up to hire more staff for implementation, which will enable him to make more appearances in large gatherings and to work with the children himself.

To measure its success, KSC has contracted Knight-Williams to conduct evaluations, using surveys & focus group discussions. Knight-Williams specializes in evaluating national science education programs. They incorporate web metrics, documentation of competitors’ demo-graphics/background information, content analysis of visitors’ contributions to the website, content analysis of competitors’ entries, and surveys of competitors, parents and professional audiences involved in local efforts.

In year 1, KSC received 770 entries, with year 2 and 3 crossing over the 1300 mark, one year reaching 1620 entries. We were pleased to learn from the Informal Education Division of the NSTA that the KSC had achieved results in its first two years equal to or better than most current national science competitions. We were also proud to receive the Parents Choice Award for our website.

In the third year of the competition which just completed, the KSC and Pulse of the Planet (PoP) websites received a combined 18,000 daily hits and 4,400 daily sessions. To date, 2762 educators have downloaded the free KSC curricula aligned to national standards. KSC has reached over 7,500 kids through special events such as the Cambridge Science Festival, NY Maker Faire (where our booth received an Editor’s Choice Blue Ribbon), LA Girl Scouts Family Days, Yuri’s Night, and after-school workshops in LA. KSC winners have been featured in national media: NBC’s Today Show, NPR’s Science Friday, Time Magazine for Kids, and Scholastic’s Super Science as well as being featured in local media in winners’ hometowns.

Over the next 3 years, the KSC will strengthen its afterschool component of its programming, ensuring that thousands of kids without computers in school or at home can be exposed to its creative curriculum. By working with established on-the-ground partners, we will efficiently reach thousands of underserved kids with substantive science. Over the next years, this model will be strong enough to replicate across the country. We are also planning partnerships with museums and technology centers so that we can reach kids who are exposed to science via an occasional field trip to a museum. By working with education coordinators at these sites, the KSC curriculum/contest can be brought to kids who otherwise would not have discovered the material.

¿Qué barreras pueden dificultar el éxito de tu proyecto y cómo piensa resolverlas?

Our primary limitation is funding. Having been funded by the NSF for 4 years (one for planning plus our first 3 years of the competition), we recently learned that in these times of extreme budget cuts, and fierce competition for existing grants, our NSF grant was not renewed. We have been encouraged to reapply this coming year, addressing some of the issues they wanted us to respond to. We can not count on this grant, so we are pursuing other potential sources of funding. We operate a very tight ship, and the staff we can afford this year will work hard to keep the program moving forward. We will benefit for sure from the systems that have been put in place over the past four years so carefully. We currently have funding for this fourth year of the competition, but will need to expend a fair amount of time raising new revenue for the KSC. We have also applied for 501c3 status, which will certainly help us be eligible for sources of grants we could not apply for before now.

We are engaging with corporations in various regions of the country to become sponsors of local competitions and local afterschool programming. In this way, we aim to partner with such a local business to both fund the area programs as well as potentially provide mentors. These sponsors, being local, will be encouraged to remain long-term partners.

Our limitations are negligible compared to the energy and commitment and devotion of our KSC team. We are working hard to develop partnerships that will position us even more favourably for funding.

Cuéntanos sobre tus alianzas.

As mentioned, our primary partnership is with radio program, Pulse of the Planet. Because of the KSC Director’s connection with both organizations, the extensive reach of Pulse not only brings news of KSC and its topics and scientists into homes all around the country, but Jim Metzner’s name recognition opens many doors.

We are currently developing our after-school program so that we can reach more underserved kids who may not have computer access in school or at home. This past year, with help from an American Honda Foundation grant, the KSC pilot a very successful after-school program in LA. In this prototype we partnered with a local organization that ran an afterschool program for Title 1 kids in Los Angeles, and who was eager to use the KSC curriculum and bring STEM education to their students. We are now exploring relationships with organizations like TASC (The Afterschool Corporation) and PASE (Partnership for Afterschool Education) in NYC as well as other afterschool organizations in SF and around the country. Additionally we are in conversations with museums such as the Lawrence Hall of Science, NY Hall of Science, and the Dallas/Ft Worth Museum of Science, exploring ways that the KSC activities can serve the children visiting the museum, extending our reach, while connecting our science topics to existing exhibits in the museums.

With our new nonprofit status (pending till fall 2011), we are eager to deepen these budding relationships, partnering to both broaden our reach into underserved communities, as well as broadening our reach into funding circles.

Explica tu selección.

As mentioned above, the first 4 years of the KSC were funding primarily by the National Science Foundation. The first year was a planning year, and the next 3 years unfolded the first 3 competition cycles. This past year, the American Honda Foundation joined us with a significant grant, funding an afterschool program in Los Angeles. We partnered with Woodcraft Rangers, Synergy and other after-school groups to conduct a series of workshops for kids who have had very little experience with science. Hands-on activities were followed by mentored brainstorming sessions in which kids were encouraged to take the intellectual leap to come up with their own science ideas. We received over 200 KSC entries from youth attending these workshops. At times, we have had corporate support to enable us to attend regional events.

¿Cómo se va a fortalecer tu proyecto durante los próximos tres años?

During the next three years the KSC will continue to strengthen the foundation of national competition, engaging more students in the KSC materials and competition. We will also further develop a strong model for reaching into underserved populations in urban areas by marrying the KSC program with existing, strong after-school programs. The need, during times of extreme budget cuts, is great to ensure that our underserved children are not left out of the STEM fields at a time where as never before, all young people need a basic understanding of science to move forward.

We will strengthen our project by developing partnerships around the country with organizations who are already established in their area as experts in afterschool education. We will not be reinventing the wheel but rather adding value to their existing successful programs, utilizing local expertise to identify the best programs to introduce the KSC curriculum in, using these regional organizations to supervise and monitor and evaluate their local programs.

As the afterschool programs are strongly in place, we are considering offering regional competitions, so that local areas will have their own competitions and live hands-on science events, with all students also entered into the national competition as well.

Partnerships and Accountability

leer más↑ ocultar↑ ocultar

Please tell us more about how your partnership was formed and how it functions. What specific role does each partner play? What unique resources does each partner bring to the initiative?

As mentioned above, the partnership between KSC and Pulse of the Planet has allowed the competition to have a voice to millions of Americans across the country via radio programming featuring KSC scientists and students. Also, Pulse’s ‘voice’ and KSC founder Jim Metzner has opened doors to many supporters, be it the NSF or companies offering prizes for the competition’s winners.
Currently, partnerships are being explored, as already mentioned, with major organizations already established as authorities for afterschool programs, as well as with significant museums and technology centers who also have existing programs for young kids. We seek to expand our reach for the competition, as well as have our creative curricula materials used as broadly as possibly, benefiting more kids via these associations.
Our afterschool partners bring expertise in training staff, evaluating programs, monitoring programs on the ground, and it is our hope that together we can rally new sources of funding. Museums also have existing relationships with schools, scouts, homeschoolers, etc, and can bring us into contact with a broad range of kids. We anticipate as well joining our development team to seek funding together as partners.

How are you building in accountability for students' successful STEM learning outcomes? Please provide a summary and examples.

The KSC has contracted Knight-Williams Inc. to conduct evaluations for the KSC competition. Evaluation methods incorporate the use of surveys and focus group discussion to elaborate on the survey data. Knight-Williams Inc. specializes in the evaluation of national science education programs. The evaluation will focus on: listening to podcasts, entering the Challenge, participating in online activities, using the activity kit, pursuing info links on the internet, joining online communities of kids, and engaging with parents or teachers while doing these activities. This evaluation incorporates the use of: web metrics, documentation of KSC competitors in terms of demographics/background information, content analysis of visitors’ contributions to the KSC site, content analysis of competitors’ entries, and surveys of competitors, parents/ mentors and professional audiences involved in the local efforts.

Studies will follow large samples of youth over several months, using a combination of online surveys, telephone interviews, and secondary data sources to construct a detailed picture of how youth engage with and become involved with the KSC project over time.

Additionally, the KSC project Advisory Committee will meet 3 times annually, reviewing project activities, science content, program content, and the progress and impacts of the project, based on evaluation reports. The group will make overall recommendations for future directions and more effective implementations. The committee includes research scientists, informal science educators, and experts on children’s media.

We are seeking to partner with The Partnership for After School Education in NYC as they are specialists in evaluating after school programs and will help to design evaluative mechanisms for all our after school programs.

Obviously to determine the ultimate benefits of the KSC’s programming will take a longitudinal study over years. At present, as well as the evaluations prepared by Knight-Williams, we will document numbers of participants, website traffic, number of entries to the KSC contest, number of times videos are watched, number of kids downloading apps and online games, and numbers of after school groups and their attendance records.

Necesidades

Inversión, Marketing/Medios de Comunicación, Ayuda gratuita (de tipo legal, financiero, etc.).

Please use this space to elaborate on your selection above and/or to add needs that may not be listed.

Aside for help raising funding, the KSC would appreciate support in developing appropriate relationships with collaborators/partners. To take the Kids Science Challenge to a new level, we need these strong relationships with major organizations/funders.

Offers

Colaboración/Redes, Innovación/Ideas.

Please use this space to elaborate on your selection above and/or to add offers that may not be listed.

The KSC’s greatest strength is its strong program. We would be happy to work together with other organizations who are reaching 3rd through 6th graders, to see how our materials, our website, games, activities, etc. might be able to be used in their programs, both to bring more kids to our competition, but also to strengthen other programs.

GLFF would offer an alternative media portal for "green" and "sustainable living" content. Through our annual film festival and (web) TV channel we strive to empower independent filmmakers and producers, and give citizen journalists a voice that is lacking in today's media environment. At GLFF it's not just a "green" message that we seek to promote, but one told in a positive, uplifting, and empowering way. In today's entertainment environment where fear-mongering and violence sell, we want to provide an outlet for the content that often gets passed over by traditional media.

¿Qué cambios quieres traer al mundo?

GLFF would offer an alternative media portal for "green" and "sustainable living" content. Through our annual film festival and (web) TV channel we strive to empower independent filmmakers and producers, and give citizen journalists a voice that is lacking in today's media environment. At GLFF it's not just a "green" message that we seek to promote, but one told in a positive, uplifting, and empowering way. In today's entertainment environment where fear-mongering and violence sell, we want to provide an outlet for the content that often gets passed over by traditional media.

¿Cuáles son las actividades principales de tu proyecto?

The primary activities are an annual film festival and we are looking to launch a web TV channel later this year.

¿Qué es innovador acerca de tu iniciativa? ¿Cómo es que es un nuevo aporte al campo?

The concept of a Film Festival and a (web) TV Channel in and of itself is not an innovation-- but our goal of creating a media outlet that focuses on content that strives to move, celebrate, and inspire people to action is something that is sadly lacking in today's media environment. Film and television are very powerful mediums and can offer a global impact for the green movement-- but unfortunately the edict of today's entertainment powerhouses are to use scare-tactics and scolding when it comes to the sustainable message, and instruct filmmakers to be careful not tread on any corporate toes. Disenfranchised filmmakers and producers are limited to what content they can produce, and citizen journalist are generally left out of the equation all together. We want to empower and spread the messages that get rejected for being "too soft" and lack the "stakes" that studios and networks are looking for. We know there's plenty of "green" content available through various outlets, however, unlike others we foster and encourage messages that seek to inform, enlighten, empower, and celebrate sustainability-- and we strive to create a media community where viewers can come to watch something that will leave them uplifted and inspired.

Green Lifestyles engages both filmmakers and audiences of the sustainable message. We have a network of global filmmakers who have submitted material for past festivals, in addition to television producers and citizen journalists looking for an alternative avenue to get their material out. On the flip side, Greenlifestyles.org has a following of over 5,000 global members and growing that are seeking content on green issues that matter to them that's inline with their positive approach to life.

¿Qué cambios quieres traer al mundo?

I wish to change the way we treat our flora and fauna. I want us to respect life in every form and shape and try and minimize the harms as much as we can. I hope to see a world filled with compassion and humanity. As per National Dairy Development Board of India the total bovine population was 283.1 million in 2003. And there are many that die on the streets of India everyday for numerous reasons. While they die their bodies keep rotting increasing pollution and awaiting decent burial. But on the other hand there are many healthy bovines that are killed solely for leather. I wish to utilize the leather of dead bovines in place of living ones.

¿Cuáles son las actividades principales de tu proyecto?

The primary purpose of this project is to minimize the loss of life that happens due to leather goods. I understand that we need to have an alternate means to replace leather but till we do not have it, I wish to help our people procure it through harmless means. Also, we will provide employment to women and other disadvantaged sections of India that have no means for succour. The people that would be employed initially will be given basic training to skin the dead animals and then burry them with dignity. This work does not require a person to be educated but, we will try and impart basic level education and sensitize them to the plight of street animals. They will be given training to show compassion to those in need and help them if required. Planting trees, giving shelter to sick animals is also our aim.

¿Qué es innovador acerca de tu iniciativa? ¿Cómo es que es un nuevo aporte al campo?

It is as innovative as its name. Ahimsa means a principle based on compassion that includes non-injury to man, plants and animals. I wish to use this approach in procuring leather. We will not kill the animal for money; we will use its skin once it is dead. After skinning him we will give it a decent environment friendly burial and a tree would be planted in its memory. We wish to help our environment and also our animals that are killed unnecessarily just for our greed. We wish to provide this Ahimsak leather instead of leather procured through cruel means.

The community that would be engaged in this would be women and men from disadvantaged segments of our society. It would be basically target illiterate men and women from lowest level of Indian caste based society. There are fewer means for these persons and I wish to see them earn with dignity and self-confidence.

Compartir la historia del fundador y lo que inspiró al fundador para iniciar este proyecto

I am a journalist but it has always intrigued me that while we care for one specie we continue to kill the other. Why is it that after 5000 years of civilization we still are incapable of treating animals with respect? I was always troubled by how these cattle were being treated and I just felt that it is important for us to know and understand that they have as much right to live as we have and hence, this idea came to my mind. I tried to convince many but they found it too gory! I don’t understand what is more disturbing killing a living animal for its hide or just skinning the dead animal and instead save one life! I want to save life and environment.

Describa cómo tu proyecto ha tenido éxito y la forma en que éste mide.

To provide employment to women and men that have no means to earn living due to their unique situations (illiteracy, rigid caste system, social hierarchy etc) It is about preserving life till the very end and stop abusing animals. It is about not killing anyone and making them part of our living. It is about flora and fauna that is being rampantly abused and giving right to life to mute and meek animals. I sincerely think that our environment and our animals are our treasure troves and they must be cherished. Humans can co-exist with animals without ill-treating or killing them.

¿Cómo va a evolucionar tu proyecto durante los próximos tres años?

I wish to take off this project as soon as I get capital. Not many like this idea as they do not think it to be humane to skin a dead animal but if I am able to get a capital of $10, 000 I will try and launch this project as soon as possible. It is certainly a unique approach hence; the first step would be to buy a van big enough to carry dead bovines. Then skinning tools etc would come into the picture. We would initially have workers make hand-made bags and wallets only due to constraints of budget. Then we will put them in markets where people especially come to buy leather finished goods. The goods would be sold keeping the profits low initially to gauge market mood for the product. We will to build collaborations with PETA and WWF.

¿Qué barreras pueden dificultar el éxito de tu proyecto y cómo piensa resolverlas?

Getting capital could be one of the barriers that I foresee besides, an uninterested customer base that may find it another business gimmick. But I am certain that people will eventually see our product in a new light at least in India. Cows and bovines are considered sacred in the Northern India so, we will get mileage out of this religious taboo. Also, our aim is to first capture flea and random markets only then will we move to showrooms hence, the margin of accruing losses would be minimised. The major challenge would come only when we have to prove to premier clientele that our product is as good as any other leather product. And then offcourse, our Ahimsak approach would be able to bail us out of that.

My support base is my family, colleagues and friends. But they cannot help me financially as of now, due to high level of capital required for this project.

¿Cómo se va a fortalecer tu proyecto durante los próximos tres años?

I wish to increase the visibility of our product. Then, we wish to turn it into a product which is trendy and cost-effective for the buyer despite it being a handmade product. We will try to rope in priests and saints from various religions to promote our goods in India and try and capture the imagination of popular thought-process. At a later stage, if we get orders, we will try and bring organisations like PETA and WWF on board and market our goods through their platforms. We will organise competition, quizzes to sensitize to the plight of ravaged animals and to catch the imagination of teenage children as children often influence their parents’ buying patterns. We may also rope in celebrities and like-minded sports icons to advertise our products through microblogging, TV and radio channels.

What impact have you had on your clients and the tourism sector?

Describe Your Idea

The coastal and fresh water destinations in Nigeria, and perhaps other part of the world, are very rich in petroleum. This brings about indiscriminate citing of oil wells and refineries on the places on the edge thereby ruining the entire ecosystem both the lithosphere, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere. Converting places on the edge to forest reserve is a noble project whose aim and objective is beyond just saving places on the edge, rather it goes a long way to save the entire ecosystem and provide raw materials for all industries that depend on the forest products directly and indirectly while embarking on forestry in river-line areas.

What makes your idea unique and innovative?

The uniqueness of this idea can never be over emphasized! Indeed, Nigeria owe her socioeconomic instability mostly to the tug of war that has taken over the oil rich areas of the country. It has been documented that the major complaint of the residents of these areas is that their environment have been converted to a mess owing to oil mining in this area. They cannot farm their land because waste products of refineries have ruin them, they cannot benefit from fishery in their rivers for the same reason. The majority of people in these areas are economically unproductive, they earn less but spend more, since they cannot farm and ordinary drink water has to be transported from other parts of the country or imported as the hydrosphere is endangered! This is the bone of contention between the people of the Niger delta and Nigeria government. As such, to alleviate the problems of civil unrest in the Niger delta, this project took it's effect; to save these places, preserve the ecosystem, provide job opportunities for the jobless Niger delta combatant, protect both rare and endangered species in the biosphere, purify the atmosphere of gaseous air pollutants, and preserve and protect the ozone layer.
This project will at long run ensure peace in Nigeria, among other things. It is a pity that the last administration dedicated over 40% of it's budget to maintaining peace in the Niger delta alone as the whole place was converted to war-tun area by the combatant. So the uniqueness of any initiative that will help to save such destination on the edge is unquestionable!

What impact have you had on your clients and the tourism sector?

GOAL: Capture elements of biological diversity that can be missing from harvested sites

•Objectives:
◦Retain wood fiber that is typically extracted from the forest ecosystem.
◦To the greatest degree possible, allow natural disturbance processes to determine the structure and composition of the forest ecosystem.
◦Facilitate biological monitoring to establish baseline data on the species, natural communities, and ecological processes that occur in forest ecosystems reserved from commercial timber harvesting.
•Benefits:
◦Allow comparison of species, natural communities, and ecological processes on harvested sites with sites reserved from harvest of wood products.
◦Provide late-successional forest habitats for wildlife that represent the diversity of forest ecosystems in Massachusetts.
◦Inform management of harvested sites with knowledge of structural attributes that develop on reserve sites.
◦Provide unique recreational and aesthetic opportunities in biologically mature forest habitats that will develop over time in reserves.
.Provide raw materials for all industries that depends either directly or indirectly on forest products like the timber industry, the plastic industry, the paper industry, and other agro-allied industiries just to mention but a feiw

Problema

The following include the major problems addressed by this project
-Conservation of natural resources in the Niger delta so as to ensure a lively and pollution free ecosystem
-Protection, preservation and multiplication of the rare and endangered species in the places on the edge in Nigeria so as to free mankind from breaking the animal right and to ensure that mankind live in harmoney with the ecosystem.
-Resolution of the endless conflict between the Niger delta combatant and Nigerian government that has claimed the lives of many Nigerians and has affected the Nigerian economy directly, in the sense Nigeria oil production rate has been cut down drastically owing to the combat in the places on the edge.
-Protection, preservation and restoration of the ozone layers that has been depleted drastically by the green house gases that are rampant on the places on the edge in Nigeria.

Actions

First and foremost, my organization is creating awareness in the people of the Niger delta, by getting them acquainted with the need to resolve their conflict with the Nigerian government through protection of their immediate environment whose destruction is their major complaint.

Second, my organization is collaborating with the institute of Agriculture nearby the Teaching Hospital to ensure provision of expertise and manpower needed to engineer this project in River state so as to ensure perfect foundation, proper coordination and smooth running.

Third, my organization is researching on the most economically useful forest trees to embark upon in establishing forest reserve in the places on the edge. for that we have come to the realization of the fact that both hardwood trees and softwood trees are suitable for the purpose.

Finally, we are embarking on afforestation of the places on the edge having gathered sufficient and credible technical-know-how and resources.

Results

The first action has lead to the public awareness of the virtues of afforestation and the fact that afforestation in the war-tun areas of Niger delta offer the best resolution for the conflict.

Meanwhile, the second step has achieve a continuous interplay between the community medicine department of the Ahmadu Bello University and the nearby institute of Agriculture which is itself an offshoot of the school of agriculture of the same university, ensuring that the knowledge of public health is harmonized with that of forestry for saving the places on the edge.
Moreover, the research into tree types and economic importance has reveal that the following named trees are suitable for the purpose. Hyperion, Iroko, Mahogany, Obeche, Western red cedar etc.
Finally, patent samples of the aforementioned trees have been made available

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

First year
This is the year of awareness: indeed awareness is very essential in executing this project because the environment of the Niger delta people has ruin them to such an extent that no project can be executed in that area without facing a serious resistance from all levels, both their youth and the community. Kidnapping has become rampant in this area for the same reason. So it is imperative that the people of the Niger delta needs public enlightenment campaign to enable them understand the meaning and merits of this project, the short term and long term benefits to their youth and their community as well as Nigeria at large. Successful awareness will pave smooth way for the subsequent steps in the proper execution of this project.

Second year
This is the year of fund raising: Indeed, establishing a forest reserve of the type aforementioned is money intensive undoubtedly. Although, this innovation is founded upon basic starting capital right from inception, it is still evident that my organization need to raise fund specifically for this purpose so as to ensure the perfection of the noble project. It is a truism that the more we handle in cash, the wider we cover in saving the places on the edge.

Third year
This is the period of execution: Having gathered all the needed momentum in previous years, the third year is the proper time to execute this project as properly as documented. we need to plan as many trees as possible, both softwood and hardwood, the distribution of which is governed by the known land fertility profile. Following the afforestation, my organization will have to collaborate with major industries that depends on the forest products directly and indirectly to ensure good market for the harvest products.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

First, Civil unrest in the Niger delta: The people in this area have actually gone deep in all vices that are prone to hindering the development of this area. Combat upon combat may make life uneasy for the technical staffs that will be recruited to this area for executing the project.

Second, inconsistency in policy has been known long ago to top the list of all the banes confronting the economy in this country. The economic policy of the Nigerian government is enormously bizarre and it affects both foreign and local investors directly and indirectly. Moreover, the fact that the present administration has less than one year to go might result in abolishing all existing economic policies as we approach the new administration and we are highly subject to such inconsistency in policy.
Finally, capital is a limiting factor in the proper execution of this project. It is not yet guaranteed that all is well in term of finance until we lunch this project and solicit for fund from appropriate authorities.

Does your organization have any non-monetary partnerships with government?

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

This partnerships are very essential to the proper execution of this project for the fact that, they provide the good knowledge of forestry needed for the project, they provide the most appropriate technology for this project, they assist with the pre-trained personnel that are researching into this project. They also help create a link with the government for it's favours. Finally, they help reach out with the agro-allied industries who are supposed to be the patronizers of this project.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

Intensive research: I need to conduct intensive research on the geography of this targeted places on the edge so as to be armed with the full knowledge of what type of tree will grow well in what type of geographical area so as to have excellent yield and productivity. The research will also include the sort for which are the most economically useful forest trees in my area to ensure their domination in the forest reserve.

Fund raising: I need to lunch this project as early as possible in order to raise fund that is adequate for the execution. i need to get loans and overdraft from my bank to boost my capital. i need the help of friends and relatives to uplift my capital.

Appointing securities of the new forest reserve from among the combatants of the Niger delta: since, the combatants are major threat to the execution of this project, it would be a wise decision to make them the securities while executing the project and even at long run, they are best in this respect in the sense that they are acclimatised with the nooks and crannies of the trouble in the Niger delta

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I have always been bordered about the number of lives that are lost in the Niger delta in a tug of war whose origin is traceable to the fact that their immediate environment (a place on the edge) is endangered, with consequent social and food insecurity in that area. Moreover i have a worry about the millions of US dollars spent annually by the Nigerian government just to make peace in the Niger delta. In addition, i am baffled with the way other nations will look at us knowing very well the high rate at which their citizens working in refineries in the Niger delta are been kidnapped.
The most important drive for this innovation is the global worming that is emanating from the depletion of the ozone layers owing to the release of green house gases from our refineries, as well as the high rate at which most rare and endangered species in the tropical rain forest of Nigeria are becoming extinct. The disruption of aquatic habitat is among the list too. The aforementioned is the ginger that call for intense reasoning and inception of the notion of converting places on the edge to forest reserv

What makes your idea unique and innovative?

Coastal community is very poor in Bangladesh, and we already lost large number of species and most of the forest along the Coast. In s14 years of sea turtle conservation it is still in doubt is this system works like a project doing some conservation work and the money end the project end. everywhere this is the reality even for the biggest project nothing is in deference. The community based conservation can sustain if there are opportunity and ways to earn money without harming the nature and the animal. community are now more conscious about this. In this venture, local people can consider sea turtle, sandy rookeries and the natural setting is the natural capital and free from god gift to community, their asset, now they can use this for green business. And the only way is Eco-tourism based on sea turtle monitoring, conservation work. Thousands of national and foreign tourist buy this service with values that is far enough for the community people what in return make no harm to nature and no capital loss in reality.

What impact have you had on your clients and the tourism sector?

I have publicized and talked to the community of international groups and discussed regarding the ecotourism and found out that international people is extremely eager to visit and participate in our ecotourism program. But unless the facility development we are not ready to invite them. There are some professional website is ready to help us to publish our information that people from deferent parts of the world can get information and contact us to visit.

Problema

Coastal communities of Bangladesh are very poor and hardly they manage their livelihood through harvesting natural resources. It is very important to engage these community people in Alternate Income Generation (AIG) activity as a prime strategy to undertake any initiative to save the conservation of natural resources. Currently the development and natural resource degradation is major threats to the endangered species in terms of habitat loss and direct impact on breeding success. As sea turtles are endangered and currently 2 species of sea turtle nest in Bangladesh coastal areas. Community people poses as major creator of disturbances and steal eggs for business. And without the conservation effort all eggs are vulnerable to exploitation and no eggs will be hatched in reality. The Proposed ecotourism project will engage local coastal people to manage sea turtle based ecotourism where they will guide and accommodate tourist at their own premises and guide the tourists to watch sea turtle at night under their guidance. The earnings will be huge in terms of communities currents income harvesting natural resources. In this way natural resources can be preserved without harming them.

Actions

I already bought land in deferent areas of coast. I have set marinelife education and research centers along the coast of South East Bangladesh. I am setting up accommodation facility in remote areas on the beach for the tourists to stay and take part in nature based ecotourism. Most of the accommodation will be managed by the community in future and before that I will train them for guidance, cooking, maintenance and oral communication. I also have operated small scale ecotourism in the respective areas through the participation of German, USA and UK people during the last 10 years. There is a high high potentiality of this ecotourism activity in our country.

Results

The each of the local family who will be engaged in sea turtle ecotourism would easily earn 2000 US $ in comparing their current income of about only 400 US$ a year. Moreover the impact would be huge and community people would be able to increase the business under the guidance and limitation. Other people who was not initially involved would really be engaged in ecotourism business ans nature conservation as they would see the profit. and the nature conservation will be community peoples goal as they will realize that the nature is their asset and people will not come to stay their house unless there is no sea turtle come to nest.

It is devising a sustainable and economically lucrative way of preserving the places on edges while conserving natural resources and at the same time protecting wildlife. It utilizes the knowledge of Agriculture, forestry and geography to transform the places on edges to forest reserves. It does not only protect these places but more importantly, it create a forest of economic importance, establishing forest and game reserves

What makes your innovation unique?

Every single person needs to buy groceries, but the vast majority buy them from traditional grocery stores. If the price and quality is the same as those found in a traditional grocery store, the incentive for a conscientious person to buy grocery products from an entity that donates all net profits to important causes is an extremely compelling one. The severe gap between the salaries of for-profit corporations and those of their employees has gotten way out of control. "Groceries for a New World" puts the power of the grocery purse back in the hands of consumers who want to be changemakers in the world through everyday purchases.

Tell us about the social impact of your innovation. Please include both numbers and stories as evidence of this impact

Once the idea of "Groceries for a New World" catches on, there is no disincentive whatsoever for concerned and caring consumers to purchase grocery items through the Groceries for a New World entity. Consumers will feel empowered just through the simple task of grocery-buying, knowing that each purchase helps put people to work (those making grocery items) and contributes to vital nonprofits. The social impact? The more people who buy groceries in this way, the greater the social impact in every conceivable area of need.

Problem: Describe the primary problem(s) that your innovation is addressing

Lack of funding for those nonprofits working with the most critical world problems and most needy peoples. I see the most critical problems being poverty/starvation, lack of self-sustainability, water and food security, child/women slavery, African children who have become parentless due to AIDS, education worldwide, funding for entrepreneurial solutions to intractable global problems, degradation of the environment, loss of habitat for animals.

Actions: Describe the steps that you are taking to make your innovation a success. Include a description of the business model. What might prevent that success?

Given that a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, I would begin by contacting manufacturers' representatives to attempt to procure at least one product for sale by Groceries for the New World. The product would be one of common necessity for consumers that is nonperishable and amenable to shipping nationwide. I would create a website that fully explains the mission of Groceries for a New World and offers the product for sale. Once word spreads and people are buying this one product, I would use the success of that to approach other manufacturers. After building a stable base of products, I could then focus on the first product to be made by people who are out of work: tortilla chips. Pending the procurement of necessary licenses, a space in Chicago would be obtained for the making and packaging of the product. This product would be added to the website. In this way, building upwards from scratch, my intention would be to one day cover a full range of grocery products to the consumer; possibly to have a retail location for a physical grocery store.

This concept is not, by necessity, limited to grocery products. It could be expanded to include any consumer product at all.

What might prevent that success? Failure to get the word out. Solution: Alert all nonprofits to the mission of Groceries for a New World. They will be excited not only to buy the product(s) themselves, but many would be more than happy to "advertise" Grocery for a New World on their own sites. Additionally, I would work hard to inform media outlets of our mission so as to get the word out through the publication of articles about Grocery for a New World. If I received a monetary award from Changemakers, I would use it to create the website and to advertise initially on Google Adwords.

Results: Describe the expected results of these actions over the next three years. Please address each year separately, if possible

I would anticipate that within one year of starting up Grocery for a New World, ("GNW") word would spread of our mission to nonprofits throughout the country and that many of those websites would be including a link to GNW's website on their own sites. I would anticipate that within a year, the initial product(s) available on GNW's website would be selling.

The second year would be about using the success of the above model to persuade other manufacturers to allow one or more of their products to be sold through this website, and thus, to expand the range and number of products to build a strong "portfolio" as we approach year number three.

Year number three would be about continuing to expand and consolidate a stable offering of products such that Phase II -- employing workers to actually make products (e.g., tortilla chips, knitted hats and gloves) -- could begin.

Thus, the efforts and success of the preceding years are used to built a solid foundation for the further growth and consolidation of the business model in succeeding years.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I have always wanted to be a changemaker. I am a ceaseless entrepreneur, and often spend time thinking about innovative ways to solve intractable problems. However, my defining moment was when I was first informed about, and eventually came to befriend, Mahabir Pun, a social changemaker in Nepal and Ashoka Fellow. As a result of the many things that Mahabir has accomplished on the fuel of nothing but desire and will, I came to realize fully the power of one simple idea.

There are many, many issues of concern to me in this world. That people in this world are hurting hurts me personally. Yet I often feel powerless to contribute to the solutions. Child trafficking is just one of many examples. As in the case of many world problems, here's a situation where an infusion of money to the people who are trying to eradicate it is really crucial.

It's becoming more and more difficult for nonprofits to raise donations, but there is one way we can raise money that's staring us in the face: profits from products people must purchase of necessity, over and over again. Why can't the daily act of purchasing groceries be used as a bulwark for change? Well, as a changemaker, I believe it CAN and WILL be, if only we make it happen ourselves.

Tell us about the person—the social innovator—behind this idea.

I grew up in a family where caring about other people was a given. As Jewish people, we are taught that to save one life is to save the world. Those are very powerful words. But while my mother would constantly say to me, as I was growing up, that one person can change the world, I didn't believe that could possibly be true as it applied to really intractable global problems. But as I indicated earlier here, I really came to understand the full meaning of these words when I met Mahabir Pun of Nepal, who has accomplished remarkable things with only an idea and a will to succeed. He has empowered me, and I now must use all of my gifts -- my strong ability to connect and communicate with all kinds of people, my strong speaking and writing skills, my highly-charged entrepreneurial mind, for which the word "no" does not exist, and my eternal belief in the power that each individual possesses to help carry forward change -- to do my part in the world.

What makes your idea unique?

“e” inc. seeks to solve the huge need for citizen involvement in the environment challenges and sacrifices of our time by launching a storefront science center to engage a broad swath of Greater Boston children and adults in environment science and action. Regardless of size, science centers have proven to be amazing draws across communities. By using informal methods, they engage children and adults in the sciences and so, are able to both inspire and inform. “e” inc. will harness this familiar format for an imperative social good. There is a singular need for dynamic public education on the state of the planet yet, to date, we have found no local places devoted to teaching both the science that underpins environment issues and the civics needed to effect immediate and long-range change. The Learning Room (TLR) will place equal emphasis on science and on the social imperatives of civic engagement and personal responsibility, teaching all visitors how to make an immediate difference in the issues they are exploring. This approach is the natural extension of our current work bringing hands-on science and action activities to low-income children and youth in sites throughout urban communities -- with 800 youth seen this year. TLR is unique in its intention: using a science center framework to teach and inspire the lay public, its underlying premise: introducing the environment as an ethics dilemma, and its proposed outcome: creating a populace with a deep appreciation of the issues at stake and the answers that are possible.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

leer más↑ ocultar↑ ocultar

What impact have you had?

For the past six years, ‘e” inc. has been deeply involved in bringing science and community action to low-income children and teens. We have carefully honed both singular teaching techniques and wonderful models for green teen teams, after school systems, workshops on climate change, and summer explorations. All our work is created with the twofold aim of engaging young people (and their caregivers) in the excitement of the sciences and the importance of conserving the planet – both its resources and beings. To date we have been responsible for thousands of young people learning in-depth science and taking on actions that make a difference in their neighborhoods. This year alone, small teams will be lowering carbon, engaging adults in their communities about the rainforest, petitioning other countries to protect animal habitats, building gardens, educating fellow students, etc. All projects are year-long, are the result of science understanding, and are created by the children or teens themselves. In the sciences, our children achieve a 40% rise in pre- to post-test scores on the topic they have explored. Our programs have been awarded the “Promising Practice” Award by the International NGO Academy of Educational Development.

Problema

I believe that, in general, the American public is detached from the serious problems and challenges facing the planet – to the detriment both of ourselves as a species, and all other living things as well. In addition, we see that science is seen as too difficult to absorb, even though it holds the understanding to the problems and solutions facing the planet. It is this ‘out-of-touch‘average person—whether child or adult-- that we seek to engage and involve in change making.

Actions

As I write, our staff is creating science and action exhibits by hand, with the intent of opening the room to public review and involvement by end-May. To shore this up, we are inviting different audiences to visit and discuss with us, we are sending press to local media and, in general, creating an audience for TLR while we hone our skills at teaching and engaging the public in this new way. Our obstacles include lack of funds, not enough ability to build this audience, overcoming the barriers to learning about and being responsible for the planet.

Results

We expect that, in a year’s time, we will have caught the attention of a wide variety of adults and children via our great style of teaching, the excitement we will generate for folks getting involved and the positive outcomes that will be felt in our communities. These will be in the form of projects, discussions, teachings, etc. that have visitors engaging with their neighbors and with local educators on the imperative of learning and doing in this arena.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

YEAR 1: We will needs to find funds to keep the room open. We will need to capture the interest of principals, science educators, and parents. We will need to expand our board to help us channel funds to this program. We will need to work extremely hard to gain the trust of low-income families in this new area and find ways to continue to support their involvement and get them to visit this new community.
YEAR 2: We will continue to seek longer term funding and to upgrade some of the exhibits. We will need to add staff and pay them adequately to manage the numbers of families (weekends) and school groups (weekdays) attending. Most importantly, we will work to initiate teen programs from this new central base and export new ideas to their communities through their efforts.
YEAR 3: Ongoing work for funding and finding a long-term home for TLR which is now at a wharf space that is slated for urban renewal in two years. Strengthen programs at TLR, create some new exhibit areas, start a speakers bureau for adults.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

issue will be whether we will run out of adequate funds before we build a critical mass of support, being unsuccessful in gaining a steady school audience, being unsuccessful in implementing action projects for all visiting classes, being unsuccessful in achieving a perspective change within the city about how to alter the outcomes for our communities vis a vis the state and needs of the environment. These would include shifts in habits, purchasing, transit usage, green space commitments, etc.

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

“e” inc. has always been proud of its partnerships with inner city centers that serve children teens, and families. Through this network of programs we have been successful in creating a sense of environment ‘consciousness’ in communities where adults often believe that the state of the planet is not a pertinent issue/concern. Our capacity to surmount this hurdle is a credit to the sheer commitment of the young people who work at “e” inc. and who are devoted to the children and youth they serve.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

I believe that The Learning Room can succeed if (1) we gain the support and attention of important supporters in our city, (2) we succeed in engaging the nearest school systems, beginning with the Boston Public Schools and then reaching ‘across the river’ to Somerville and Cambridge, (3) we create compelling exhibits that get better and better over time and that excite people about specific ideas and finally (know you want there but there are four), (4) we create a serious action process so that all visitors leave with tasks to do and we have all sorts of return systems that help folks build success in their communities or for their ideas.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

During the last three years of my doctoral work on inter-group hatred at Harvard I ended up working with several primatologists. At the beginning of this academic adventure, my time was spent simply trying to understand and master evolutionary biology and the theories that seemed so interesting to my own research. Over time, however, as I began to understand more about our primate ancestors, and more about the workings of the animal kingdom and the interrelatedness of beings and their ecosystems, I began to shift my entire set of thinking. The lens through which I made sense of the world underwent a fundamental change. This new understanding was so galvanizing, so fascinating, so filled with wonder, that I was amazed at my own prior ‘ignorance’ of it. How had I missed the excitement that was science?

At the same time, I slowly began to understand that much of what I was learning about i.e., the planet’s systems and beings was totally at risk. What one saw on television regarding wilds and their inhabitants were almost disingenuous. These places and animals were at risk throughout the planet. Hardest of all to believe was that the culprit was us -- humanity. This too was mystifying. How could so many well-intentioned people in our country – decent educated people just making their living and raising their children – not see the tragedy that was coming through human overpopulation and concomitant overuse of resources.

Finally, the nail in the coffin, as it were, was the understanding I was gaining that all the researchers I was getting to know and study with, all of them were now becoming, not the dispassionate/detached researchers of their many years of training, but, rather, wildlife and wild lands conservationists, No longer were their animals the subjects and the focus of a study. Instead, these animals were simply disappearing and the only ones who were in their world and could therefore make an accounting and a difference were these same researchers. Their lives were being turned upside down.

For me, I struggled with this knowledge. How could I play a part? Eventually, I came to see that my next task/role was to teach as many people as I could about what was going on, and what they needed to do to change this ‘severe decree.’ No small job indeed.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

I have a confession to make. This “e” inc. is not my first non-profit. I have already started one that is now 27 years old and still bringing positive outcomes to many. So taking the lead on a problem and trying to use what knowledge and skills I have is not entirely new. I believe that this ‘streak’ in me is the result of coming from a family of Jewish Holocaust survivors. Perhaps it is the sense that those with little should be protected. Perhaps it is the desire to push back at a world that can steamroller over things, information, people that are historically inconvenient. Of course, who really knows what the concerns are that motivate us, in the end. For myself, I can just make guesses that seem plausible and see how they fit and feel.

Nonetheless, what I certainly do understand is that individuals can take a stand, can work to have their lives be not only a pass through but an opportunity to make a point, make a shift, make a difference. For this reason, over the past years, I and my colleagues here at “e” inc. have worked hard and long to make a shift in the perspectives and understanding, and most of all, the actions of those we teach. Not a bad day’s work.

THE PROBLEM

Several problems currently affect the ethical market.

1) Terrible Inconvenience

In a large urban center, when a person wants to buy fair-trade coffee, organic baby clothes, and sweat-shop free running shoes, they have to travel to three independent stores. Even worse, in smaller cities, these goods and services are simply not available. While several brick and mortar enterprises have tried to consolidate the market in one place, nobody has been able to do it well.

2) Lacking Awareness

A second challenge is that the majority of the already committed ethical consumers are only familiar with a handful of brands. This is why a few product categories dominate the market. Most people know about fair-trade coffee and organic foods. Less widely known are fair-trade FIFA soccer balls, designer cork hand-bags, vegan high-tops – thousands of ethical products in high demand.

3) Desperate Dispersion

The pain, however, is not reserved for buyers alone. Today’s ethical market is still widely dispersed, and ethical brick and mortar sellers struggle to generate sufficient traffic and sales to scale their distribution channels.
The clever vendors launch their own online sales sites, but quickly learn the difficulty and expense of running a successful online store.

OUR INNOVATION

1) Market Consolidation

Through a proprietary, custom-built selling platform, we provide companies that produce ethical products the opportunity to load, market, and sell their products to hundreds of thousands of ethical shoppers in one place.

2) Shopping by Ethical Categories

For ethical buyers, we provide a relevant shopping experience that allows them to search for, learn about, and purchase products that are aligned with what they believe in. Furthermore, by grouping products according to ethical claim, ethically-minded consumers will expand their understanding of the ethical marketplace and find more products that fit their shopping values.

In just three months of operations, Ethical Ocean has helped over 100 ethical providers bring over 700 products. Start up vendors like AfriCAN (a social enterprise seeking to rebrand Africa in Canada through western clothes made from African fabrics) have found in Ethical Ocean a marketplace to make their first sales. Large established sellers like Kicking Horse Coffee (Canada's leading fair trade coffee retailer) are using Ethical Ocean as their first trusted ethical online outlet.

Problem: Describe the primary problem(s) that your innovation is addressing

Several problems currently affect the ethical market. In a large urban center, when a person wants to buy fair-trade coffee, organic baby clothes, and sweat-shop free running shoes, they have to travel to three independent stores, often geographically disparate. Even worse, in smaller cities, these goods and services are simply not available. A second challenge is that the majority of the already committed ethical consumers are only familiar with a handful of brands. The pain, however, is not reserved for buyers alone. Today’s ethical market is still widely dispersed, and brick and mortar sellers struggle to generate sufficient traffic and sales to scale their distribution channels.

Actions: Describe the steps that you are taking to make your innovation a success. Include a description of the business model. What might prevent that success?

ADDRESSING MARKET SHORTCOMINGS

Ethical Ocean is an online marketplace where shoppers find the top ethical brands in North America, allowing them to buy products that align with their values.

1) Offering for Sellers

Through a proprietary, custom-built selling platform, we provide companies that produce ethical products the opportunity to load, market, and sell their products to hundreds of thousands of ethical shoppers. We create a unique opportunity for vendors to showcase the ethical characteristics of their products to buyers who care.

2) Offering for Buyers

For ethical buyers, we provide a state of the art shopping experience that allows them to search for, learn about, and purchase products that are aligned with what they believe in.

3) Our Role

We see our role as creating the platform for interactions between buyers and sellers. To facilitate this relationship, we will use our expertise in online marketing, social networking, and ethical consumerism to bring ethical buyers and sellers together and help them communicate and transact.

OBSTACLES AND STRATEGY

1) Slow Market Growth

Risk: It is possible that the online ethical market will grow more slowly than our projections estimate. Mitigation Strategy: Our technology, brand, and business model are built. We have successfully loaded over a hundred top ethical retailers. While the growth risk is real, the purpose of the next phase is to test the market response, to spend money carefully, to learn, and to optimize our marketing expenditures. As the capital expenditures and cash burn rate for our business is quite low, if sales are drastically slower than expected, we can easily scale back our expansion plans to refine our approach and maintain our cash flow requirements.

2) Large Retailer Entry

Risk: It is possible that a large online retailer with more resources than us will enter and dominate the market. Mitigation Strategy: While this is a possibility, these entrants are not always best suited to compete in every niche market segment. Etsy was able to out-compete eBay and Amazon in the handmade craft market despite being at a resource disadvantage. Many large retailers will face brand authenticity challenges as well as troubles learning to understand the new market and translating their current model to fully meet its needs.

Results: Describe the expected results of these actions over the next three years. Please address each year separately, if possible

1) Canadian Growth / US Entry (Q3:2010–Q1:2011)

With a refined technology platform, a large supply of products, and a proven model, Ethical Ocean will expand its presence in Canada and make final preparations before entering and rapidly growing in the US market.
The Canadian expansion and final US preparations include:

1. Utilizing our initial market testing knowledge to invest in more targeted SEO and marketing to scale our traffic and presence on the web;

2. Developing a well-recognized and a well-regarded brand that is known to both buyers and sellers of ethical goods;

3. Developing additional site functionality to enhance user experience, continuing to build our online community to increase retention, and building brand trust through both online and offline marketing channels;

4. Developing a deeper understanding of the products that are in highest demand, and continuing to improve our product offering until we have consolidated the majority of the market, including offering the most internationally recognized brand names;

5. Hiring a second full-time employee, a VP of Technology, to prepare for launching the US focused version of Ethical Ocean; and

6. Registering Ethical Ocean as a US corporation and preparing the corporate governance structures to support the expansion.

To fund this growth and expansion, Ethical Ocean currently seeks an angel investor. By Q1 of 2011, Ethical Ocean will rapidly deploy in the USA. This will involve our President of Operations moving to our chosen location, either Silicon Valley or Seattle, where we will headquarter Ethical Ocean USA.

2) Stage 4 – Scale & Innovate (Q2:2011 – Q1:2013 )

With a successful deployment of Ethical Ocean’s brand and technology in the US, our team will focus on growth and innovation. This will include:

1. Conducting a targeted consolidation of the US ethical market, starting in the largest growing ethical regions of the US,

2. Leveraging a larger pool of marketing dollars to compete in both the SEO and traditional marketing spaces, and

3. Utilizing our understanding of top selling ethical products to evolve our business model to include inventory, allowing for higher margins, reduced shipping costs and more control over end-to-end operations.

To support this rapid growth and innovation, Ethical Ocean will seek Venture Capital funding around Q4 of 2011 to rapidly secure our position as the market leader in online ethical shopping.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

In 2007, a group of travelers were packed like sardines into a small car en route to Montreal from Toronto. As they bounced down the highway, they bounced around ideas for businesses that would help to improve the world. Many ideas were thrown around, and one stuck - make it easier for people (like us) to buy ethical products. By the time the car trip was over the Ethical Ocean logo and a business plan has been scrawled down on a napkin.

The idea that started small has grown in to a fully-functioning online ethical marketplace. Our seven team members come from various backgrounds, but have come together under a common belief: that trade and ethics need not be separate; rather, the future of commerce will require the integration of ethics. It will be consumers who demand these type of products and services, and the businesses who combine economic and ethical motivations will flourish.

Tell us about the person—the social innovator—behind this idea.

Two of the seven directors involved in building Ethical Ocean were in the car-ride where the idea was first hatched.

Chad Hamre works for a climate change consulting company that advises companies, international institutions and domestic governments on creating greenhouse gas reducing systems. He's slowly figuring out how to blend a BSc in Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, an MSc in Development Management from the London School of Economics and an (in progress) Executive MBA at the Queens University.

Davin Trent Lengyel holds degrees in Education, Engineering Physics, and Mathematics from the University of Saskatchewan. He moved to the Toronto to study Law at the University of Toronto and was later called to the Bar. Davin became interested in volunteering for social causes while studying Engineering.

Even though many states outlaw wolf dogs as pets, people are able to purchase them all around the country. Sadly, many people obtain these creatures without a full understanding of the animal's physical and social needs. Most people are unaware of the magnitude of responsibilities they are taking on when bringing a wolf dog into their home. All too often, the fate of these animals becomes euthanasia. The Loki Clan Wolf Refuge provides a safe haven for wolf dogs where they are able to live out their lives in pack situations.

What makes your idea unique?

Our idea is unique because, in contrast to the many organizations that help homeless animals, our goal is to help prevent animals from becoming homeless. Due to the recent recession and rising unemployment (particularly in Rhode Island), many families have lost their homes. These families have been forced to move in with family members or find alternate housing in a relatively short period of time. Although pet-friendly housing is available, families in these situations are usually faced with limited options based on their diminished income. These families often have no other options than to find a new home for their pets or surrender them to shelters. Our organization provides another option to these families. We also offer short-term foster care for pets when families are displaced from their home due to disaster, or are admitted for an extended hospital stay.

What impact have you had?

As a new organization, we have not yet had as much of an impact on the community as we will in the months and years to come. One impact we have had is to raise awareness of the increase in "foreclosure pets". The impact we are working towards is to help more pets stay with their families.

Problema

The primary problem that our organization is addressing is the increase in pets being surrendered to shelters due to families losing their jobs and/or homes, which in turn increases the number of shelters who are running at capacity and may be forced to turn animals away.

Actions

We are working to spread the word about our organization and increase awareness about this problem. At this point, we are concentrating on recruiting additional qualified volunteers, particularly for foster care, but also for a variety of other opportunities. We organized a holiday pet bazaar, including local pet vendors to raise funds for the organization. We are planning a pet fashion show for spring or summer of this year. We also set up an online shop to sell pet-related items. We have applied for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, which will enable us to participate in additional programs, as well as acquire grants and business donations. In order to raise awareness about our organization, we have distributed flyers and brochures, joined social networking groups, including pet-specific groups, and made contacts within other animal organizations and businesses.

Results

As a result of recruiting volunteers, raising funds, and raising awareness about our organization, we would be able to provide short-term care for pets while their families find new homes, and then reunite the pets with their families. Losing your job and/or home is a stressful sitatuation, and pets are a great sense of comfort during times of stress. Giving up a pet to a stranger or shelter would only cause additional stress, especially for children.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

Our primary needs to make our project successful, aside from funding, is a strong base of qualified volunteers. This year we are looking to increase our number of volunteers to 50-75. To assist our volunteers, we are completing a volunteer handbook, which will provide detailed information and guidelines about all the volunteer opportunities available. In 2011, we hope to have 100-150 volunteers, and would like to have a formal training program in place for our volunteers. By the end of 2012, our goal is 200-300 volunteers, and would like to implement a "mentoring" program, which would pair a seasoned volunteer with new volunteers.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

Although there are many factors which could impact the success of our organization, without great volunteers and funding, our organization could not succeed or even continue to exist.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

1.) The first most important action needed to grow our organization is raising awareness of our organization, for both support from the community, as well as making our services available to those in need. Without this action, the other actions are not even a possibility. 2.) The second most important action is recruiting, training, and supporting our volunteers. Without volunteers, we would not be able to provide services to those in need. 3.) Third, raising funds to provide care for more pets is critical to the growth of our organization.

La historia

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I had read several stories about "foreclosure pets" and the overpopulation of shelters because of the additional pets being surrendered. Since Rhode Island has had one of the highest unemployment rates since the beginning of the recession, I realized that there was a real need for an organization like ours. There are many very good organizations who help homeless animals find new homes, however, there are very few organizations who help families keep their pets rather than adopting them to new families.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

As a lifelong animal lover, I was looking to volunteer with an animal organization, but none of them seemed quite right. I decided that a new organization needed to be formed. I researched the details regarding incorporating an organization, tax-exempt information, and animal welfare organizations. I then approached other animal-loving family members and friends about my idea and 2 Hands 4 Paws was formed. A lot of work has gone into the preparation, setup, and administration of our organization. Although it seems that we have not come very far, we feel that we have made quite a bit of progress in a short period of time.

ANGELS OF CHANGE: A Positive Deviant/Hearth Approach to Maternal Health

Country your work focuses on

Tanzania

Describe Your Idea

INTRODUCTION
In this world, every minute one woman dies of pregnancy or birth related complications. WHO defines maternal death as: death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of pregnancy from cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes. Perinatal death means death of a fetus from 28 weeks of gestation to seven complete days of life including stillbirths. The perinatal mortality; is a sensitive indicator of health status of women, the health of the newborn and quality of health care provided during perinatal period especially delivery and immediate postnatal period. According to TDHS 2004/5,there is high antenatal care coverage- 94% at least one visit; 62% makes four or more visits yet the maternal mortality ratio is still high- 578/100,000 live births and under 5 mortality rate = 112/1000 live births.
Tanzania is amongst countries with very high number of maternal deaths in the world, the high maternal and newborn mortality constitute a silent emergency in Africa, (WHO, 2004) .Two decades after safe motherhood initiative (SMI); the maternal and perinatal mortality levels have sadly continued to rise instead of declining. Health indicators are not improving which may be attributed by poor quality of health services provided (reproductive and child health survey, 1999; TDHS, 2004/5).Poverty, social exclusion, low levels of education and women violence/abuse are amongst the contributing factors.
ANGELS OF CHANGE
Angels of Change is an entry point to prevent maternal deaths using the Positive Deviant/Hearth Approach. Angels of Change is an Idea of intensive behavior change Intervention targeting Mothers of Childbearing age and Pregnant mothers who at risk of maternal complications. It is derived from the fact that despite of all of the above factors contributing to the high Maternal mortality in Tanzania, one thing is evident, that there are a number of women who has never experienced Pre, intra and post delivery complications within our communities under the same resources, these mothers has been able to explore the environment and make use of the available resources while others are not able to do that, these are the one I call the Positive Deviants or The Angels of Change. Through identifying these Positive Deviant Mothers and Using the Community Based Hearth Session Approach, women of Childbearing age and Pregnant women can be brought together to share the Positive Deviant behaviors practiced by Positive Deviant Mothers. Different issues involving locally-discovered positive deviant practices as well as promote other practices essential to healthy living. Hearth sessions incorporate a number of approaches for behavior change including identification of Angels of change in a community, peer to peer support, Mother Dialogues, counseling, negotiation, Adult learning principles, skills building, motivation through visible practices and Women mobilization. Family planning, prevention of unwanted and high risk pregnancies, ensure skilled care during childbirth; ensure access to quality emergency care when a complication arises are among the topics during Hearth sessions.
It involves learning what these Role Models (Angels of Change) has been doing to promote their socially and communally acceptable behaviors and practices promoting good maternal health, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Health care utilization and promoting these practices to be adopted by other mothers. The Hearth part of Angels of Change idea using a PD approach is an intensive behavior change Intervention targeting mothers at risk of maternal Complications.
Sites of implementation including selection of places where majority of Youths are found/lives/work in relatively close proximity, where there are a significant number of risk behaviors.
Angels of Change will be identified though Initial dialogue with respective mother’s groups in a particular community/Institution through peer voting systems especially during antenatal visits. The respective group, guided by Community health workers will anonymously select an Angels of Change with positive deviant behaviors and practices communally acceptable which promotes good maternal health using a special tool. Our Health Volunteer(s) together with the selected Angels of Change will facilitate a mothers Conversation process to discover behaviors and Practices depicted by a selected Role Model and the Group will set up Action Plan. The selected Role Model will trained on facilitation skills and be responsible to conduct Hearth Sessions with Material support provided. She will also be Our contact person in a Particular group observing how peers are adopting her/his practice and behaviors and recommending the way forward. The project will facilitate group meeting at least twice a month and Group learning visits to other successful group with the same socio-economical circumstances. Each group will have a chairperson, Secretary, one Angel of Change and one guardian, teachers/ a community member identified by the group will serve as Guardians. Our Health volunteers will be conducting regular supportive visits to respective group(s) and Provide Monthly report.

What makes your idea unique?

The Positive Deviance (PD) process identifies acceptable, effective and sustainable practices that are already used by at-risk mothers and that do not conflict with local culture. Through learning what their peers with equally limited resources and risk situations are doing to promote maternal Health, Mothers are then empowered through Hearth Sessions to adopt better practices and behaviors even in areas with very limited access to health information and services. It is, in essence, it is a “mop-up” program to eliminate the pool of maternal Complications among women of Childbearing age and Pregnant women , not only through Health Promotion but also by permanent behavior changes which are acceptable by the community and can be carried on to next generation of women.
PD Approach1 has been in Practice for nutrition rehabilitation programs in Vietnam and Rwanda resulting to marked reductions in child malnutrition and improvements in child health within a short period of Time .ITS USE FOR MATERNAL HEALTH PROGRAMMES HAS NEVER BEEN DOCUMENTED ANYWHERE,Making it unique. The angels of Change Project will be linked to other health interventions for all women within the target communities if any.
Its is a Programme which is self centered and Communally driven buiding the Capacity of women especially in resource limited areas to be responsible for their health by taking appropriate actions at the right time through guidance of their Positive Deviant Peers leading to improved maternal Health.

Mariam(Not her Actual Name) an old lady with Seven children with the Last Born,Nameless dying in early days of her life.Mariam suffered a severe hemmorrhage afterwards, the cause being retained placenta which was very very difficulty to remove. She was brought to the hospital, exahusted and tired, paper white appearance and it was a weekend and a Doctor on Duty was not available in the ward.Luckly enough i was there visiting my wife who has just delivered a baby girl Eileen. After observing that the Doctor on duty was not there then i thought i've to do something to save Mariam's life.I told the nurse,'i'm a Doctor and i think i can help'.At first she didn't agree with me ,she needed to see my ID Card.Unfortunately i didn't have one.I was just Completed internship in Dar Es Salaam and moved to Shinyanga to wait for posting.Unwelcomed by the nurses i just grabed the sterlile gloves and gown from the Nurses hands and rushed to the Bed where Mariam was gasping, after a series of emergency Procedures Mariam became stable, back to life again.....at that point the nurses realized that i was really a medical Doctor.Nearby Mariam there was a Woman Called Fatuma(Not her real name),she knew Mariam of course and they were neighbours to our suprise. She was just delivered a Seventh baby without any Maternal Complications. After talking to her for some time i discovered that she was poor even more than Mariam, then i kept asking myself 'Why people having the same resources, others make good use of them while others are not???.I asked the same question to Fatuma ....to my suprise the practises she explained are those what i currently call Positive Deviant Behaviors. After some time i attended a Positive Deviant/Hearth Training and started offering technical support to one of our Programme area which was implementing the Nutrition Project among Underfives using the PD/Hearth approaches...very successifully. Then i thought the very same idea can pbe used in Maternal health issues ...of course as ANGELS OF CHANGE PROJECT.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

Majority of Programmes aiming at Good Materal Health are always Generalised and institutioanl approaches. However programmes aiming at Buiding Capacities of women to become the Angels of changes for their lives by observing and learning from peers who have the very same resources but having Positive deviant Practices are very few if Any.Angels of Change Projects is a Socially, acceptible and centered Projects which uses socially driven practices which are Positive to build capacity of expectant mothers in Materal Health issues.

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

The idea is to create Nicaragua's first true Wildlife Sanctuary, Rescue, and Rehabilitation & Re-release Center. Working with government entities, local communities and individuals we will create a sustainable project that will educate and employ locals and create a paradigm shift in the way wildlife is viewed in this country.

Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?

Entidad sin ánimo de lucro

Country your work focuses on

Nicaragua

What will be the impact of your idea?

The center will provide a paradigm shift in education throughout the country while providing local universities and universities in the western hemisphere with an educational platform from which to learn about and practice wildlife conservation efforts. It will educate and create jobs for locals while developing an effective and sustainable eco tourism program that may be a model for Nicaragua and other countries in Central America and the Caribbean. It will help the people of Nicaragua and surrounding countries become aware of the importance of conservation and co-existing with animal species. A spin off effect will hopefully be the reduction of domestic violence in these countries by applying the concepts of Humane Education and Animal Welfare to the Ministry of Education's K-12 curriculum. Scientific research has demonstrated that where Humane Education and Animal Welfare is integrated into the curriculum, domestic violence is reduced significantly.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

Currently, we are working with WSPA and its member societies in Nicaragua, the Caribbean & Central America, have obtained significant land donation commitments from local community members, and expect to fully comply and work with universities, government organizations and officials. We believe that Global Help Foundation has the commitment, drive and qualified personnel to achieve this goal.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

Initially, we need around $25,000 to build a building that will house GHF personnel and volunteers. This will be built on donated land. GHF has already commenced the process by getting the word out through the use of social media, workshops and conferences attended. We are conducting fundraisers and have obtained a small grant from WSPA to create an educational CD of songs accompanied by thematic units that teach about the topics discussed previously.

Man-making education is a rare and non-existing idea, after Swami Vivekananda's intense teachings around the world. Men and women around the world are grabing information and degrees and do their work for their bread alone. Nobody is interested to teach the poor and the ignorant about the real knowledge to empower himself or herself not only for bread-winning, but an extra-miles going education that can protect him or her from all miseries from outside and also from his or her own inside. This strengtehing of internal man is the most important thing that is required for todays world.
