when we come back to our hometown village, and have a reunion party. we realized that most of we have moving out of the village and left the village just that. no services, no protection from governance. and most of all, many youngster left the village (like we do) and become nothing in the city (some says that they become criminals in town). we love our village and the art culture in it, but we didn't do anything till now.
we want to come back to our village and make it a better place to stay and through the local art culture can teach youngster so they can earn money from it rather than move out to the city.

We shall partner with relevant organisations in the country and ensure that all the apprentices in their first year business are in partnership

Innovation Nexus (in) is an international org. whose mission is to bring world innovators together, making the world a truly global village.
By eliminating barriers through international connections and new-found perspectives on worldwide opportunities, these innovators can create a global impact.

anyone all over the world who had a world changing idea could meet the right people to make it happen?

It is a consensus that innovation is positively related to GDP growth. However not every entrepreneurship activity (or EA) contributes to economic growth. High growth EA is considered the major form of EA that has any explanatory effect on differing rates of economic growth across nations. The problem lies with high growth EA having the most barriers, especially coming from developing nations - so, many groundbreaking ideas remain dreams.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Nowadays, all over the world there are leading eco-systems of innovation in their respective industries. In other words, there isn't one leading center of innovation - different locations have their own entrepreneurial expertise, for instance: UK in finance, Switzerland in pharma, Israel in cyber, Italy in design, etc'.
Usually, in every region the local industry thinking leaders grow from within the local industry. However, no one has a monopoly on creativity, and innovation means thinking out of the box.
Innovation Nexus brings new thinking to old industries - exposing entrepreneurs and creative thinkers to global innovation opportunities and vise verse - facilitating the creation of high growth ventures, and ultimately economic growth.

Nora is a Jordanian teacher, and a mother of 3. While taking care of her children she invented a new way of recycling plastic bottles and bags, and transforming them to highly stimulating "do it yourself" educational toys for children between 3-6. After the word spread she saw the educational success of her product.
Nora knew she had something that could potentially make a positive impact on plastic recycling and education on a global scale, but without the proper connections and guidance this will never occur.
By joining the local IN fellowship, Nora met key players in education and design from different regions, the invention evolved and now her product revolutionizes the cost of education in developing countries, while doing good.

Over the coming year, Innovation Nexus will connect 150 'in’ies with key industry leaders, investors, innovators, advisers and major enterprises - at 5 global industry leading locations.
Regional ‘in’ meetings focus on facilitating opportunities for all parties involved: access new markets, form strategic partnerships, locate talents, exchange ideas, improve skills, enable global cooperation and foster long lasting friendships. All the key elements of high-growth entrepreneurship.
High growth entrepreneurship is estimated at approx. 4% of total entrepreneurship activity and is responsible for 40% of total jobs generated by entrepreneurship activity. That’s why we aim to accelerate this type of scale-able entrepreneurship through micro-enterprises, to benefit them and the community they operate in by contributing to economic growth and social stability.

We are working on partnerships with innovation hubs, university entrepreneurial centers, global companies, universities and organizations all over the world (+5 regions each year). Each global event eliminates innovation barriers while strengthening the 'in' global alumni network.
The collective experience the IN founders have from previous International business weeks held in Israel for the last 3 years, plus the experience gained with IN (the next global step) will help us extract the key elements needed for exporting innovation from every region and cultivating high growth ventures.

IN is a global network comprised of hosts and fellows. Both pay an annual fee and in turn gain benefits such as (1) reserved places (for their 'INies'), (2) connection to global alumni network, (3) to local innovators, investors and major players in every region, (4) sponsor revenue, etc'.
Each Host \ Fellow gains different benefits in accordance with the partnership agreement. In other words IN is financially self sufficient (long run).

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Fundaciones, Organizaciones no gubernamentales, Empresas, Gobierno regional, Gobierno nacional, Otro.

There are organizations who aim at strengthening entrepreneurship such as UP, pioneers and endeavor. The difference lies in the global approach. These org. either work at a local level (in different regions) strengthening local innovation, or just holding open events.
We at 'in' are taking local innovation to a global stage. We recognize the different innovation advantage each region has and leverage it in order to make a global impact - creating a global innovation network and opportunities at all levels. Our mission is making innovation - actionable, on a global scale.

As an Israeli involved in the startup eco-system of the "startup nation" I met many entrepreneurs who made it big. It seems success is just around the corner - it's far from true.
Working with aspiring entrepreneurs I met and spoke with hundreds of entrepreneurs from all over the world who have incredible ideas but lack the local opportunities to make them happen. I remember on February 2014 I was heading an Israeli startup delegation to mobile world congress in Barcelona and during the event I connected my startups with internationals and suddenly I relized I found for every startup the exact partner they needed (investor, market leader, pilot partner, tech partner, etc'). We have to break innovation barriers to truly promote sustainality

Team comprises of Henry Weinstein, full time CEO with over 9 years of experience in leading technology projects from inception to market, Advising we have Oren simanian and Elena donets, founders of Tel Aviv Uni. Entrepreneurship center, one of the leading centers in Israel and worlwide. Together we have the vision, tools and dedication to make this venture a reality. We're recruiting regional reps. and bolstering our team with global influencers

Audience: Who have you identified as your customer/recipient groups and do these groups value your solution for different reasons? How do you engage different customer/recipient groups to deliver your solution?

Our "customer" is every org. looking for a doorway to the global innovation opportunities we provide. These could be governments, municipalities, local companies, universities, entrepreneurial hubs, etc'.
Innovation is key for sustainable economic growth and so we aim to remove the inherent global barriers, and make the world a truly global village.
We engage the "customers" using experienced, well connected and influential local partners, and using our internationally known advisers.

Scaling the solution: How would the prize money and publicity help you to achieve your objectives over the next two years?

As of now we have partnered with Israeli partners and working on partnering with local leaders in different international regions. The money and PR would help attracting the right partners much sooner than the organic growth we project. Having such world renowned acknowledgement would be beneficial to our 2 year launch plan. We are a global initiative and the right PR would provide us the brand awareness we need to create strong partnerships and reach innovators worldwide.

We should use the money to bolster our team and remain "lean" but effective. We would be able to meet our potential partners more freely and as a result our market research will lead us to the right partners right off the bat.

What if women from different countries could be brought together to help each other thrive in their professional lives while creating cross cultural empathy?

The number of female entrepreneurs is not representative of the number of females in the population. The of lack female entrepreneurs in the Bay Area, and around the world, is due to struggles and barriers faced in a male dominated role. The unsupported infrastructure, poor accessibility to resources and to these professional networks increases gender inequality around the world.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

By fostering a community of liked minded women entrepreneurs in the Bay Area, we aim to develop empathetic female leaders to help and empower less fortunate women in developing countries. The skills obtained are mutually beneficial to have a cross cultural mindset that will activate empathy to create change.

The project will start by immersing our team in developing communities in Kenya by partnering with Zawadisha, a micro finance non profit organization. Our team will be on the ground interviewing local women about theirs needs, as well as their skills and professional goals. While our primary goal will be to help them utilize their existing skills and talents, we will provide our own skills and suggestions to help their projects succeed. This mutual cultural dialogue will provide us and women in the Bay Area a better understanding of similarities and differences. This information and experience will be passed on to women in the Bay Area though presentations, workshops, guest speakers at community events, and publications.

W4W is utilizing the relationship with an already established organization to maximize our learning and cross cultural understanding of the needs in developing regions of Kenya. By partnering with Zawadisha, we gain the benefit of working with a women-focused, non-profit that has been operating with communities in Kenya for 3 years, and providing these women with 50+ micro loans to start their eco-projects. Upon return from our travels in Kenya, W4W will actively reach out and engage with women in the Bay Area to share our experience, create new relationships between women in the Bay Area, and engage the community to explore lines of communication with women in developing countries to bridge the similarities of struggles of females entrepreneurs. Utilizing this newly created network of women around the world to share best practices, from women in the Bay Area to women around the world.

We will facilitate the connections between women in the Bay Area and women in developing countries, helping them realize and gain empathy for women going through the same struggles and barriers around the world. These empathy driven cross cultural relationships will drive social change in underserved communities, and drive worldwide female entrepreneurship. We will do this by utilizing mission oriented and social media platforms, and connecting women in the Bay Area trough local events to empower local communities, create jobs, and close the wealth gap by connecting women around the world.

A multi prong strategy where an arm will be reaching out to successful women and organizations around the world to partner in any capacity through financial support, mentorship and internship programs. Another arm will reach out to female entrepreneurs who benefitted through W4W to give back to females who were in their same shoes in the past.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Amigos y familiares, Individuos, Fundaciones, Organizaciones no gubernamentales, Empresas, Otro.

Zawadisha, The Bright Side of Life Community, National Association of Women Business Owners (SF Bay Area Chapter), WomenInitiative (helping lower income and women with low skills), and the Global Fund for Women. We differentiate from all of the organizations above by creating a world wide network providing tools and resources that links women from the hub of entrepreneurs (Bay Area) to women entrepreneurs who have the least amounts of resources. Our model is bridging the gap that exists between the range of entrepreneurs around the world.

It all began with a group of extremely passionate business women interested in social justice, sustainability, culture, and women issues. We were in search of ways to help other women around the Bay Area. Through the planning of a volunteer-based trip to Kenya with a micro-finance organization (Zawadisha), we realized that this was the missing link, we wanted to connect women around the world. The name is very straight forward, "Women4Women." We want to create a network to empower women around the world, and give back after becoming successful business and community leaders. This idea is just starting, but it has the potential to reach millions of women around the world by growing organically, sustaining and empowering each other.

Our team consists of graduate students: 2 founders, 2 advisors, and 4 staff members. Our team is supported by the International Sustainability Club at Presidio Graduate School, Zawadisha, and Presidio Graduate School Community. We plan to grow the staff in our team to increase our networking opportunities, administrative actions, and building partnerships.

Welcoming Immigrants: Why Empathy Is Smart Economics For Cities

by David Lubell, founder and Executive Director of Welcoming America

Why should a local government care about welcoming immigrants and becoming an actively empathetic institution? Not only do immigrants add social and civic value to towns and cities, they also help their communities become stronger economically. More localities are recognizing this, and with immigration reform stalled at the federal level, they are taking the lead to attract and welcome their immigrant neighbors.

'Burgers & Bun-Kebabs' seeks to transcend cross-cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic differences by activating and nurturing empathy within and between K-12 children from underprivileged communities and privileged communities in (E) Palo Alto, CA and Karachi, Pakistan.

Children from communities in conflict could co-create solutions to challenges their elders have thrust upon them (climate change, war, gun-related violence, dysfunctional role models, etc)?

Post 9-11, citizens of the Islamic world (as embodied by Pakistan) and America view each other with increasing mistrust and resentment. A dangerous lack of empathy is being socially conditioned into the psyche of 600 million+ youth and children in both societies. Meanwhile, vast and growing disparities in socio-economic opportunity between underprivileged and affluent communities within both the US and Pakistan are tearing at their social fabric.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Burgers & Bun-Kebabs seeks to activate and nurture empathy in children from communities in conflict by engaging them in the co-creation of solutions to local and global challenges (e.g. climate change, war, gun-related violence, teen-pregnancy, early marriage, etc). ‘Burgers’ is a term that is commonly used in Pakistan to refer to children/youth from Western-oriented, privileged communities whereas 'Bun-Kebabs’ symbolize children from local, underprivileged communities who are often physically and emotionally segregated from their affluent peers (e.g. East Palo Alto). Burgers & Bun-Kebabs will engage kids in teacher-facilitated workshops, co-creating solutions that are expressed through the universal languages of art & music.

Imagine 4 children: Joe is a 4th grader at a private school in Palo Alto, Maria is a 5th grader at a public charter school in East Palo Alto, Sara is a 4th grader in a private school in Karachi while Adam is a 5th grader in an NGO school in an urban slum in Karachi. While Joe and Maria live only 3 miles apart, they might as well be living 7500 miles away – their lives and realities are that different. In fact, if they were to interact via monthly, teacher-curated, art & music 'therapy' workshops and envision a better world (through art and music videos viewed by Google Glass) with Sara and Adam, they would discover the commonalities that bind them and defy the many religious, ethnic and cultural stereotypes they may have grown up with.

There is a palpable sense of frustration amongst youth across the globe that their futures are being hijacked by socially unjust forces that they seemingly have little control over: racism, xenophobia, climate change, the ‘war on terror’, dsyfunctional financial markets, escalating gun-related violence in schools and the ‘US-versus-them-ism’ - these are just some of the forces tearing at the social fabric of America. Now imagine if we twinned 200,000 youth across the Bay area and then connected them via a K-12, longitudinally structured, teacher-curated art & music program to another 200,000 'twins' across the globe (e.g. Karachi, Pakistan). The opportunity to co-create solutions to global problems such as using art and music as 'therapeutic' media of expression has profound potential. Now amplify this potential 400,000 times. That’s the impact we are ultimately seeking.

Ultimately, this Child-2-Child, Youth-2-Youth empathy-building, art & music co-creation project can be scaled and replicated in communities across America, engaging 5 million K-12 children in local AND international, 'tenured' twinning partnerships between private and public/charter/NGO schools.

Burgers & Bun-Kebabs will seek and foster collaborations with and between institutions and initiatives such as the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools (NAPCS), Teach for America, KIPP, TCF, CARE-PK and ASPIRE that can each play a pivotal role in catalysing these large-scale partnerships.

The 'Burgers & Bun-Kebabs' project is a social enterprise that will be largely financed through an 'earned-income' annual program fee of $360 that is embedded in the private school tuition of the 'Burger' (200,000 of them in the US and Pakistan), generating an annual revenue of $72 million which should make the program self-sustainable. In the 1 year pilot phase, we project an enrolment of 2000 private school children, yielding $720,000.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Amigos y familiares, Individuos, Fundaciones, Organizaciones no gubernamentales, Empresas, Gobierno regional, Gobierno nacional, Clientes, Otro.

There are many variants of a 'snapshot-in-time' style of student exchange program around the world but few, if any, that are tenured throughout the entire K-12 curriculum. Their impact is significantly diluted by intense, ongoing social conditioning. In contrast, by cultivating a structured, empathetic relationship of 'co-creation' between children from different socio-economic, ethnic, cultural and national backgrounds, Burgers & Bun-Kebabs proposes to become a marketplace of both ideas and practical solutions to both local and global challenges, co-created by children for children.

Born and raised in the UK as a 'burger', Asher would often travel to Pakistan to visit his grandparents and was deeply impacted by the sheer socioeconomic disparity between the rich and the poor. What troubled him even more was the general apathy of the affluent (including kids) who lived in their ‘ivory towers’ and man-made ‘bubbles’, blind and desensitised to the grinding poverty around them. Following his father’s untimely death and his mother’s subsequent institutionalisation from mental trauma, Asher had a three-year ‘hands-on’ apprenticeship with poverty in Karachi which gave him an opportunity to closely examine and experience life through the eyes of a 'bun-kebab' – excluded and looking in to a world of affluence from the outside.

Montalvo’s Teen Council will provide a forum for youth from across Silicon Valley to share their perspectives about the issues impacting their generation. Together with world-class artists, they will collaborate on new art works exploring these issues to be presented to at Montalvo and other sites.

What if we could activate the arts as the vehicle to spark thoughtful, respectful and real exchange among diverse youth on issues that impact them equally?

Despite Silicon Valley’s diverse population, there are few opportunities for the region's youth to engage in meaningful exchange and interaction with those from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Our youth are missing out on powerful experiences that can help them to understand other perspectives, appreciate the differences among us and develop an expanded worldview that will guide their future actions.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Montalvo’s Teen Council provides a platform for a diverse community of youth to convene, define issues of common concern, and work together to articulate a shared viewpoint through the creation and presentation of original art works. Weekly sessions with world-class artists in residence at Montalvo or engaged in our programs will provide the Teen Council with an understanding of a multidisciplinary sampling of the arts and strengthen their critical thinking and observation skills. The process of collaborative creation will build trust and mutual understanding as they experience failure and success, communicate their ideas and work through conflicts. The artists will facilitate the journey through the challenges of the creative process.

During Montalvo’s 2007 Summer Arts Institute (a progenitor to the Teen Council), students from throughout Santa Clara County worked with guerilla performance group headRush to find their unique voice and express themselves through physical theater, spoken word and satire. One youth, heavily involved with gang activity, found renewed purpose for her life, commitment to achieving her education goals, and value in her voice and place in society. She was also able to share her heartbreaking life experiences with the other participants that many had only seen glorified through movies or television, giving a soul to that individual character. This student remained highly involved with the subsequent Teen Council pilot.

The original iteration of Montalvo’s Teen Council ran from 2007-2009 and was incredibly impactful for the teens, artists and communities their projects touched. Unfortunately, the program was halted due to significant challenges being faced by Montalvo at the time. Now, with renewed clarity in vision and mission, strong leadership and stabilizing finances, we hope to relaunch this remarkable program.

This work continued to impact Teen Council members and the thousands of individuals they reached through the public presentation of their original art works. For example, as a result of her experience with Montalvo’s Teen Council, the student mentioned in the last question went on to earn her BFA in Studio Art from Santa Clara University, is an emerging visual artist, and is on staff at San Jose’s acclaimed Movimiento de Arte y Cultural Latino Americana.

Montalvo hopes to deepen the impact of the Teen Council program by activating our community partners such as other arts and cultural organizations (Zero1, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art; MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana, Silicon Valley Creates), schools and universities, and local art events (South First Fridays, SubZero Festival). They could help spread the impact of the program by providing additional venues and platforms to present the Teen Council’s original art works or by engaging their artists to share their work and insights with the Teen Council.

Support from Ashoka and the Packard Foundation will provide critical seed funding to relaunch the Teen Council. Montalvo will also work closely with our Trustees, individual donors and institutional partners to engage prospective funders to sustain the program and to more deeply engage existing funders in this exciting initiative. A portion of the program’s expenses may also be supported with revenue generated by earned income activities.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Individuos, Fundaciones, Empresas, Otro.

No other Bay Area artist residency offers sustained engagement with their artists. While some organizations have teen councils, these primarily operate as young volunteer corps to assist with public programs. Berkeley Rep’s Teen Council does create original performance pieces among other activities, but only meets monthly and aims primarily to build new theater audiences and develop future arts managers. Adobe Youth Voices does engage youth through digital media but it is not a cohort of teens working together with a professional artist facilitating the creative process.

Montalvo’s Teen Council grew out of increasing requests from artists we worked with for ways to engage local youth in social practice arts. At the same time, guerilla performance group headRush had just completed a year-long residency at Downtown College Prep (DCP), a San Jose school serving low-income students. headRush wanted to continue its work with DCP, so Montalvo invited them to lead the Summer Arts Institute where students from DCP and nearby Saratoga, Los Gatos, and Cupertino schools came together to explore social issues they felt passionately about, actively dialogue and use the arts to get their voices heard. That summer program gave us an incredible glimpse of what a longer engagement could produce.

The program will be collaborative project between Montalvo’s Lucas Artists Residency Program and Education Program. The project team will comprise 5 full-time and 1 part-time staff. The program would also engage select artists-in-residence from the Lucas Artists Residency Program (which hosts ~65 national and international artists annually) as well as Montalvo’s teaching artists working at schools and sites throughout Santa Clara County.

How does your idea help cultivate empathy skills to strengthen communities and equip young people to become leaders of change?

The program brings together youth of diverse backgrounds to identify key issues of their generation and then find solutions for communicating this to the public through the creative process. Montalvo creates a safe space for this exploration with artists modeling for students what it means to be respectful, how to resolve conflict and solve problems collaboratively and creatively. This breaks down barriers and allows youth to find commonalities while appreciating other’s unique viewpoints. This understanding of others, and recognition of similar concerns and values begins to shape a collaboration, a process and an empowerment of self and others – supporting the development leadership and empathy.

Montalvo would reach out to its school partners to recruit a diverse group of students to join the Teen Council. These would include Downtown College Prep, Bellarmine, Saratoga High, Los Gatos High, Leigh High, among others.

Academic partners such as Santa Clara University and San Jose State University could provide space to convene and access to academic expertise in fields relevant to the key issues that the Teen Council will be exploring.

Desafíos

A key challenge will be to ensure full engagement from the members of the Teen Council. Participation is a significant investment of time and bandwidth and today’s youth are juggling multiple commitments and constant distractions. Montalvo program staff and the artists will have to be flexible, allowing the students to lead the program and providing guidance when they need it. The sense of ownership over the collaborative project, passion about the issues they choose to investigate, and growing connection and commitment to the members of the Council will help to sustain their full engagement.

Does your project use any of the following approaches to cultivate community members as empathetic and collaborative leaders?

creating a safe space, developing emotional competency, building leadership skills, storytelling, collective problem-solving, identifying shared values and differences, instilling courage.

Polite Up the World is a global education/awareness campaign to promote empathy, with Hollister, CA, Earthquake Capital, showing the impact listening to oneself, others, and the environment can have in leading to empathy that saves lives and builds connections that can last forever.

What everyone knew just the "I statement" (I hear that you feel, think or mean.../ is that right?) skill of active listening?

The problem Polite Up the World addresses is the need for the universally appreciated civility skill of active listening to be systematically and effectively spread, taught, modeled, practiced and appreciated for the valuable skill it is - that it is more than not interrupting, but enables understanding how the other party feels, empathize, connect, prevent and de-escalate disputes/violence, and grow community, teamwork and innovation.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Solutions include making available a truly memorable, effective, entertaining, program with versions for all ages, in several languages with multiculturalism, and built in training for teachers, parents, and users, on positive reinforcement, that teaches, trains and instills in an in intensely drill based way (becoolwiz.com) social skills and life skills with active listening at the core of the program and empathy skills interwoven throughout.
The program comes with supplements encouraging results and rewards including choosing where a student may volunteer. The program makes life situations, especially the tough ones, like accepting constructive criticism, triggers to recall the fun, nonthreatening, happy memory building answers.

Examples of how BeCoolWiz activities, the main tool Polite Up the World Project promotes to learn active listening as the heart of all social skills and life skills, that enables empathy which leads to connection, harmony and success, include:
A section 8 5 year old boy and his parents seemed to forget about everything in their boarded up house, when I went over and asked them to try out BeCoolWiz. The little boy, Jacob, laughed. The mother laughed. The mother praised Jacob as he learned (there is always a right, clearly wrong, and funny wrong answer choice to keep it light) - it made us smile when the mom said later when Jacob grabbed something, "What would Cool Bird (the star character) do?" and Jacob stopped and asked permission.

To date, the program has impacted a few thousand children, teachers and parents over the past 7 years it took to create and test the program part time during working to support myself and wanting it to be just so. It has not come close to reaching its full potential.
Since it is centered around universal civility protocol such as acknowledging, greeting, appreciating, and so many more (see topics list becoolwizhomeschool.com) including active listening at the core, BeCoolWiz is readily accepted as socially desirable; most people believe there is need for increased knowledge of collaboration and cooperation skills. Academics can improve for students, classes/schools, attendance/retention; less violence and bullying; increased teamwork, innovation and productivity in the future. Near term awareness increase: Contest participation, program trials and purchases, and feedback.

The main spread strategies moving forward include making the program more international by using the outline but filling in specific socially accepted behaviors and language for each of the 52 main civility norms; making the program in all of the main languages for main cultural regions of the globe - now it is English and Spanish -make fit adult situations. Holding and making globally popular contests promoting benefits of actively listening and empathizing to connect, collaborate, harmonize and excel. BCW through Polite UTW can inspire instill active listening into education comprehensively.

OWYP prepares a new generation of empowered global citizens by engaging university and middle school students in cross-cultural interactions with students abroad. Guided by curricula developed to encourage empathy and action amongst youth, we develop the skills needed to address world challenges.

What if every student around the world had the chance to learn about cultures and perspectives across the globe directly from those experiencing them without the prohibitive cost of the travel or program overhead?

The world has changed: the global economy is flattening, there is unprecedented migration and we are experiencing a digital revolution and yet schools around the globe are not preparing youth for their interconnected world. Those prepared to operate within this reality will see this interconnection as an opportunity. Those not prepared will see this changing landscape as a threat.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

OWYP links schools around the world to build mutual respect & understanding among students & provide the global life skills needed for success in the interconnected 21st century. Partnering with universities, OWYP establishes service-learning programs on campuses & trains students to facilitate weekly global competence curricula in local middle schools. Guided by university student mentors, middle school students engage in active partnership with another OWYP classroom abroad through exchanging videos, pictures, & messages. The students explore topics including identity, self-expression, stereotypes, "allyship" & empathy, & gain skills such as critical thinking, making PSAs & presentations, Socratic dialogue & cross-cultural collaboration.

OWYP gives students the opportunity to connect & collaborate with peers at home & abroad & learn from each other in meaningful ways. Instead of hearing about other countries in textbooks or the news our students are empowered to tell their own stories. They learn to discern generalizations from facts & value human connection across difference & similarity. Turkish facilitator Remi Monteverde reveled at the drastic drop in teasing by the end of 1st semester. Frequent feedback from students is that OWYP classrooms just feel different. Guyanese facilitator Inderpaul Bisnauth said “We don’t want to be something normal for the students. Normal isn’t working. OWYP is something dynamic, giving our students a space to use their voice & be heard.”

Initially run purely by a volunteer staff of young people around the world, OWYP linked 67 schools (26 countries) through our global mindset & service-learning curriculum. The staff, like the classroom pairs, collaborated via email, Skype, phone & letters as we built up the curriculum & learned the impact of our program directly from our partner teachers. Students couldn’t get enough. Many OWYP staff were volunteer educators in OWYP classrooms & we were collectively operating the organization between college classes so we chose to scale the student facilitator model. Since 2009 we have engaged 6 universities as official partners & anchor institutions. Since inception we have connected & empowered over 6,000 middle & high school students & trained over 325 university students as leaders & educators. We have already begun reaching out to potential university & middle school partners in CA.

As long as youth continue to graduate in the 21st century with 20th century skills, our vision of a just world is unattainable. If we work within the existing education infrastructure to enhance school curricula with opportunities for youth to become empowered & empathetic global citizens, we can make these necessary learning experiences equal access & systemic. We aim to scale to reach 24 new sites within 5 years. We will also build up our year-one curriculum to 3 years, reaching all 3 middle school grades. With our global academia network we will implement location-specific impact studies.

By leveraging local partners & supporters in each community where we work & using a “train the trainers” model, we are able to empower local univ student leaders & scale efficiently with low overhead. OWYP will receive a 3-year anchor grant from the El-Hibri Foundation for 2015-2017 to supplement earned-income & other support. Funds from this competition would allow participants from the CA counties to join in our next phase of global expansion.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Amigos y familiares, Individuos, Fundaciones, Organizaciones no gubernamentales, Gobierno nacional, Clientes.

As connective technology advances and most of the world’s population cannot afford to travel, virtual exchange is becoming popular. No other program is as community-powered, accessible, sustainable or scalable as OWYP. Our program is free to all students, we do not require equipment or wifi at middle schools & we are able to create lasting change in our participants, unlike one-off activities. The student facilitators bring downloaded video messages from partner classes to show each week & small cameras with which to record responses; after class they send the videos to counterparts abroad.

OWYP was founded in 2004 by then 18 year-old Jess Rimington as a link between her high school in Massachusetts, USA & a school in Ethiopia. After an experience of anti-Americanism at an international youth leadership summit two years prior, Rimington was compelled to create a safe, productive, equal-access & meaningful space for youth from different countries to really know each other as people. She recognized that with looming global challenges like global warming & conflict over scarce resources, the next generation absolutely needed to learn to work together. The project grew quickly with teachers around the world signing up to be paired, & within a year OWYP became a not-for-profit run by a volunteer team of youth in 17 countries.

After 2 years of strategic development as part of El-Hibri Foundation, OWYP will spin off as an independent NGO again in 2015. With funding for a 3rd full-timer & 1 part-time, OWYP will have a full executive team by November. The current team is Program Director/acting Executive Director Cady Voge who has been an OWYP educator and strategic planner since 2004. Mychal Estrada, Student Leadership Director, supports OWYP student teams all year long!

How does your idea help cultivate empathy skills to strengthen communities and equip young people to become leaders of change?

An OWYP classroom is a special place. The instructors are university students with extensive training in facilitation & Socratic dialogue. Activities might include writing identity poems, or creating anti-stereotyping PSAs. Next, facilitators document “exchange artifacts” from the lesson to share, i.e., pictures of the class’ “culture posters”, or a video of students introducing a national hero. Finally, the class reviews “artifacts” from their partner class & compares their own responses & insights to those from their friends abroad. Throughout a year of being pushed to think critically, empowered to use their own voice, & exposed to new ideas, every OWYP student builds the skills & confidence to make positive change in their communities.

OWYP partners with the following 6 universities: Georgetown University, Boston University, Turkey’s Istanbul Bilgi University, Pakistan’s National University of Sciences & Technology, Guyana’s University of Guyana, & Kosovo’s University of Gjakova. The El-Hibri Foundation is OWYP’s primary financial sponsor. We received an Innovation Fund grant from the US Embassy in Guyana for our Guyanese team to visit their partners in Washington, DC & Boston.

Desafíos

Since the beginning we have enjoyed no shortage of excitement/demand from schools, parents and students. However, as our target schools serve disadvantaged students, teachers are facing more pressure than ever to “teach to the test”, presenting a challenge to all “extras” like OWYP during class time. This year we have developed resources for our facilitators and teachers that outline all the ways in which OWYP curriculum addresses US Common Core learning standards. In the coming year we will continue to test and improve all of our tools which support teachers to participate in our program.

LINK-MC.COM is Monterey County’s first mobile-optimized website that connects homeless and low-income citizens with critical and life-saving resources.

The concept has been developed by Zendesk and implemented in the San Francisco Tenderloin District through collaboration with St. Anthony's.

What if each one of us helped a person in need?

A growing number of USA citizens are homeless. To be without a home means no shelter from environmental extremes, predators, or for belongings, there are no facilities for nutrition or hygiene. Individuals existing in these conditions are in crisis needing empathy and support to access resources. People want to help but don't know how, support orgs and officials provided a portable tool with easy access to information can assist more efficiently.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Until there is ample affordable shelter, a robust education system, services that offer a comprehensive approach to integrating marginalized citizens and a society that values human welfare over personal progress we can’t expect to solve the cause that leaves people in the USA homeless. But an App like LINK-MC.com will empower all of us with a tool and information to participate in the solution while the exchange between previously estranged community members will foster experiences, understanding, and empathy that didn’t exist before. IntegrAid’s marketing will strategically integrate the use of LINK-MC.COM to cultivate interactions among the public, clergy, doctors, teachers, police and the marginalized populations we aim to serve.

LINK-MC.COM is a county specific list of resources for those living without shelter. LINK-MC.COM can be accessed on mobile devices or computers with an internet connection. On the surface the benefits of implementing this technology provides viewers, homeless and Samaritan alike, the ability to retrieve real time information to get help and the opportunity to be proactive finding solutions. On a deeper level properly implemented and marketed this tool becomes a device for engagement between estranged segments in a community. Example: Panhandling for food, you find times and locations for food pantries or feeds on your smartphone. During this interaction you may hear a story that leaves you with a better understanding about being homeless.

Quantitative data for the use of digital technologies in homeless populations is still being gathered partly because access to the internet for this population has been limited. The California Public Utilities Commission now offers free cellular service and discounted digital plans to low-income individuals; government funding is being infused to breach the digital divide so we see more service orgs providing tech labs, as this trend increases we will have more analytics to show where, how and the type of information accessed. The qualitative data is already apparent we observe an increase in esteem and motivation when homeless individuals can help themselves. We notice a change in demeanor when an individual in crisis who feels isolated is offered needed support this act validates their value. The caring community doctors, teachers, police and clergy can easily find support information.

The concept and framework can be duplicated for any county. The concept was first implemented in San Francisco early 2014. In June IntegrAid investigated efficacy with St. Anthony’s Tenderloin Technology Lab and asked Zendesk to help us create LINK-MC.COM. We all envision this concept to evolve as a preferred standard to circulate resource for the homeless. Part of IntegrAid development plan includes ads to monetize the application and collecting donations to increase operating revenue for local organizations. We’ve also discussed Kiosks and integrating our data to interface with HUD’s HIMS.

Once the concept is fully developed operation expenses should be minimal we anticipate the expenditures to be data entry, security updates, ad sales and duplicating instances in additional communities. The concept has a built in monetization mechanism offering advertising to business and service organizations. IntegrAid envisions advertising incentives as a way to secure repeat use of LINK-MC.COM by the public.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Individuos, Fundaciones, Empresas, Gobierno regional, Clientes, Otro.

In 2012 we saw a surge of homeless Apps. Code for America Hack Contest solicited ideas though none truly propagated because of the lack of available technology for the homeless at that time. The UK government offers an App for citizens to help police the homeless. IntegrAid’s approach differs because of our timing with the current increase of government funding to make technology available for homeless populations and we are specifically developing the LINK.COM concept as a turnkey solution for other counties.

IntegrAid was founded in 1994 and incorporated in 1998 as a 501.c3 Tax-Exempt Public Charity. In the last 30 years we’ve support many different issues with common denominators marginalized populations and public participation advocacy as part of the solution.

LINK-MC.COM was conceived through a serendipitous mouse click that led to a press release about LINK-SF.COM. After years of meetings discussing best practices to help the homeless reading about LINK-SF.COM created the AHA moment “This framework Zendesk developed can be functional relatively quickly and provide meaningful help” the second thought was “And with further development the concept offers a wonderful platform to enlist community involvement and generate revenue as well.”

Next to personal experience, association and exposure are the best teachers. LINK-MC.com is a vehicle for the public to engage with segments of our community we might otherwise neglect feeling unable to help interaction produces understanding which leads to empathy. Our youth is impressionable and whether privileged or not interrelating with marginalized populations provides an education about similarities and the consequences of our actions. Though LINK-MC.COM is implemented and will be developed as a tool for all ages our marketing campaign is heavily slated to focus on enlisting tech savvy youth to provide education and LINK-MC.com access hubs in locations where the homeless gather.

We activate empathy among the next generation of social justice leaders to help them increase their self-awareness, empathize with the struggles of others, and take collective action to drive social change. In 2014, our youth are focused on scaling up their newly launched Student Voice Campaign.

What if every young person was inspired and empowered to take action to improve the lives of others in their community?

Young people today must make sense of an increasingly complex and diverse world (40 languages are spoken in San Jose alone). As the next generation of leaders and changemakers, they must solve the complex challenges ahead that will require collective action across diverse groups. Being able to connect, to empathize, is the critical foundation to ensuring youth will have the skills, experience, and belief they need to be powerful changemakers.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

CFJ increases connectedness and empathy by training youth to be the next generation of social justice leaders. We recruit high school students from different races and ethnicities to go through our leadership training which has 3 components: 1) Story of Self: youth reflect on their history and identity to increase their self-awareness, 2) Story of Us: youth build empathy by learning about the struggles of others; they meet with peers to explore a range of social justice issues such as race, class, and sexual orientation, and 3) Story of Now: youth work together to lead a social change campaign locally or at the State-level; youth often champion issues that don’t directly affect them because they can empathize with other people's struggles.

A youth’s perspective on impact:
My name is Reginald and I’m a youth leader at CFJ. CFJ allowed me to break out of feeling alone and build a sense of community with the new youth that I met. Together, we developed our leadership skills and heightened our awareness on various issues. CFJ taught me to be empathetic so that together, we can work to make sure that we live in a better world.
We went out to our neighborhoods to talk about our Student Voice Campaign which is creating more meaningful student engagement in schools. To find a solution, we planned a Townhall with over 100 people and met with our Superintendent. It was an opportunity for all of us to become social justice leaders and do something to make an impact on our community.

CFJ has trained over 1,000 youth like Reginald by activating empathy so they can take action on issues in their community. Their actions have led to meaningful changes, such as increasing the number of students on the path to college through their “A-G Graduate With Me” campaign. CFJ youth report a stronger sense empowerment and solidarity with youth and adults in their community. They also benefit academically and are more likely to stay engaged in their community. A 2012 study by UCLA found that compared to their peers, CFJ alumni are 3.5 times more likely to attend a 4-year university and 5.2 times more likely as an adult to be engaged in issues that affect their community.

In 2014, CFJ launched a Student Voice Campaign to address the lack of meaningful student engagement in schools. We hope to scale the Campaign by engaging over 1,000 youth and adults from the 5-county area.

We will build on the momentum of our Student Voice Campaign which in just four months has engaged over 2,000 youth, garnered media attention, and received support from local and state-level school leaders such as Superintendent Chris Funk of the East Side Union District in San Jose and State Board of Education President Michael Kirst. We will scale the Campaign by engaging youth and adults beyond our headquarters in San Jose (to include the 5-county area) and push for the adoption of policies and practices at the local and state-level that promote meaningful student engagement in our schools.

CFJ has strong connections with private foundations and individual donors who support our work. In the last year we have been successful in bringing in new funders to cover 70% of the costs of our new Student Voice Campaign. We plan to leverage our connections to sustain and grow this project. We are also focused on growing our base of donors in the San Jose area to continue to grow our impact. Last year we increased donations by 30%.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Individuos, Fundaciones, Empresas, Gobierno regional.

While organizations in the area provide services to youth, CFJ has the only leadership development program in San Jose that trains multi-racial groups of youth to take action on issues that matter to them. Our leadership training has been refined over the past 10 years and is a nationally recognized model. For youth, CFJ is unique because they are able to lead campaigns locally and also join with youth from our other cities to push for meaningful change at the state level. Our Student Voice Campaign is currently the only youth-led effort around student engagement in schools.

“Kids from across state get a lesson in school politics” was the SacBee headline describing the scene on January 17th after 100 youth had stood in line for 6 hours to voice their concerns over major education reforms underway. I was in charge of delivering the bad news that our concerns would not be considered and worried about the reaction of our youth. I guessed that most youth would be furious, but to my surprise, they easily accepted the news as if they had expected to be ignored and unvalued. 48 hours later, we held an emergency meeting to discuss why youth are so often overlooked. That conversation sparked the Student Voice Campaign which is pushing for more meaningful student voice and engagement in education.

Our project team in addition to Taryn, include Organizing Director Igdalia Rojas, Lead Organizer Rosa de Leon and Organizer Yvette Tran. They are full time staff and alumni of CFJ's Leadership development and youth organizing programs. They started with CFJ at high school, built their skills and experience that took them to university and on graduation returned to give back to the program by helping develop the next generation of youth leaders.

We believe in leveraging the power of strong networks not only to make systemic change but as a learning opportunity for our student leaders in being able to effectively work with diverse group of youth and adult allies. We lead a San Jose Alliance of local organizations that give voice to parents and youth in education that include Somos Mayfair, Sacred Heart, and PACT, and also work closely with school, district and County officials.

Desafíos

Sometimes the voices of our students get drowned by other interest groups and adults who have more political power and are seen as the “experts” in education. It is challenging then to keep students motivated and sustain their belief that their sincere efforts and personal stories can and will make a difference. To overcome this, we follow a “see it to believe it” mantra by tying our leadership trainings to an action-oriented campaign so that youth can apply their leadership skills in real-time and see the progress they can make when they work collectively towards a vision of change.

Center for Council is initiating and expanding programs, based on its successful pilot program in Soledad, California, that build positive culture, both inside and outside of prisons, and supporting successful reentry and re-integration of formerly incarcerated individuals into their communities.

What if each of us got to be the author of our own story?

While over 95% of prisoners will be eligible at some point for release, the lack of successful rehabilitation programs brings many back. California has historically high rates of recidivism, which has contributed greatly to the overcrowded conditions, leading to the recent Supreme Court ruling & the realignment strategy now unfolding. Current inmates and the formerly incarcerated who return to our communities are an untapped community resource.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Utilizing the practice of Council, incarcerated participants are learning and practicing new skills that support healthy and productive perspectives and behaviors that are critical to balanced, effective and sustainable reentries. The practice of Council has the potential to reframe the way we treat each other—as individuals and as societies—it is an easy-to-understand and learn, contemplative practice that opens the heart to focus on our shared experiences and perspectives and teaches respect and patience; Council creates a common field from which deep communication, understanding and solutions can seed. Our plan is to scale our successful pilot in Soledad, which has trained a cohort of inmates of different races and ethnicities...

Experience has shown that Council is an appealing and effective rehabilitative modality for prisoners and can be a critical link in successful reintegration and reentry. Stories abound of transformative experiences in Council. An inmate participating in an early workshop observed: “In Council, I’m not just the bad things I’ve done; I get to be all of me… you see that we’re all the same on the inside, in our hearts.” Another inmate wrote of a Council intro workshop: “It was one of the most freeing experiences I’ve ever been a part of. I never knew all you had to do was listen and speak from the heart and you could get a little better…” Council program alumni preparing to parole are eager to share these skills and healing with local youth.

Center for Council believes that transformation must occur at the individual level, family level, the institutional level, the community level and the societal level. Our intention is to build the confidence, education, and advocacy skills of our program participants. Our council-based programming creates a vehicle for participants’ self-expression and self-advocacy, so that their engagement with the wider world helps to change prevailing beliefs.

Research has shown that by treating complex traumatic stress in a comprehensive fashion, affected individuals can serve as advocates for changing their social image. The collateral consequences of convictions include many civil disabilities, as well as personal disabilities such as those accompanying post-traumatic stress. Self advocacy can bring about a reduction in program participants’ civil disabilities as well as personal growth.

Center for Council is committed to supporting the emergence of a more sustainable, resilient, interconnected society. Consistently, Council program participants report that they feel "heard and seen" by their peers, co-workers, families & friends, that they discover a greater sense of community & empathy for those around them. Engagement, or "social connectedness," is a key indicator for healthy, sustainable communities, helping to build social capital & positively affect individual health and well-being. Systems are embracing innovative alternatives and we have concrete plans to scale...

Now ensconced within the fiscal sponsorship of renown nonprofit resource Community Partners, Center for Council is deeply resourced by a robust network of allies and support personnel and is tapping philanthropic support developed through decades of association with its programs through The Ojai Foundation. As we cultivate relationships with CDCR and area Health Systems, revenue generating staff trainings will supplement grant-funded programs.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Individuos, Fundaciones, Empresas, Gobierno regional, Clientes.

Center for Council views collaboration as key to success. Partnering with a growing network of community-based & faith based organizations, we are helping to foster a practice-community & weave the emergence of this good work in a variety of arenas. Uniquely, allies like the Governor's office & the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation are now reaching out, as are major funders, like the Rockefeller Foundation, to explore how best to implement & scale the work that is demonstrating such promise & excitement in its pilot phase. Soledad is our laboratory as we seek to grow.

Sitting in close, intimate circles, gathered around a warm fire, telling stories & sharing what’s in one’s heart has been a core practice of human culture since the dawn of time. Council has survived through changing times & cultures & has reawakened more compassionate, less hierarchical ways of teaching, learning, healing & governing. Council has taken on new incarnations in classrooms & boardrooms, support groups & social justice initiatives, men’s & women’s circles, spiritual centers & university programs. Incubated & nurtured within The Ojai Foundation until its fiscal spinoff to Community Partners, last year, Center for Council has emerged with a mission to foster the emergence of a more sustainable, resilient, interconnected society.

How does your idea help cultivate empathy skills to strengthen communities and equip young people to become leaders of change?

Center for Council provides instruction, coaching & support to thousands of at-risk individuals & hundreds of Community-Based Organizations & Social-Profit Groups, as well as training for educators, health care professionals & youth leaders. Council is a modern practice derived from many ancient forms of communicating in a circle, utilizing a center, a circle & a talking piece to create an intentional space in which to share our stories. The practice of deep listening without judgment fosters an atmosphere of respect for ourselves and for others & promotes empathy, dissolving barriers to cooperation, understanding & community, acknowledging everyone present & focusing intention & energy on our common stories, values, fears & aspirations.

Center for Council partners with organizations, institutions and individuals committed to systemic transformation and creating more compassionate, resilient communities. Our recent Social Justice Council Project enabled us to create an immersive training experience with the frontline staff of 13 social justice organizations, over 6 months, to deepen their skills and provide a container and a toolkit for interacting with their constituents.

Desafíos

The practice of council is age-old and has roots in all cultures. It is a generative and healing process in which communities can create a safe and consistent space for deep presence, important communication and critical healing. It is a powerful container and requires care and nurturing, which has kept Center for Council quite busy. As our programs in prisons and jails become more popular and organizations reach out for support, we are challenged with providing enough support to our potential partners, as our resources are limited. With increased capacity, potential scaling is limitless

Does your project use any of the following approaches to cultivate community members as empathetic and collaborative leaders?

The Int'l Youth Orchestra sparks music conversations that empower youth to be change agents, social innovators and idea champions. Their global cultural perspectives and social empathy will help shape and define how future world citizens integrate social differences and solve global challenges.

What if kids around the world could work together to compose and simulate the future via music?

Within today’s globalized world, in contrast to the technologies connecting us all, many pre-globalized human mental constructs and social structures continue to perpetuate social violence: Lack of early positive stimuli. Fear of differences. Psychological displacement. Ethnocentrism. Dogmatism. Political persecution. Economic oppression. Ignorance. Intolerance. Human rights abuse. Domestic violence. Social violence. War. Lack of empathy.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

We use world music to enable cross-cultural empathy learning, which enables critical thinking and eventually, the ability to navigate differences and pilot new social worlds. We target not the symptoms, but the root causes behind social violence and structural racism: the human fear of differences. Our solution? A United Nations like youth orchestra. Reaching across the globe to unite the youths of the world through music, the Int'l Youth Orchestra brings together 100 pre-professional youth musicians (10-25 years of age) each year from all over the Bay Area, combining a diverse range of our world’s musical traditions and cultures, from the mughams of Azerbaijan and chamber music of China to the ragas of India and singing bowls of Tibet.

Even though she learned Alevi singing as a girl from her mother, immigrant teenager Berfin Oztoprak was feeling socially different and isolated in San Francisco, which caused increasing conflicts within her immigrant family around culture and assimilation issues. She distanced herself from her mother Ozden, an ethnically Zaza Kurd and an Alevi from Turkey. After rehearsing for months with our Int'l Youth Orchestra, and seeing how other youth musicians felt pride for their cultures, and performing in “The Opera Project” (Nov. 2012), where she and her mother sang in Kurdish as a tribute to Malala Yousafzai, Berfin found a new respect for not only Kurdish music but her regional dialect of Kurdish. She visited Turkey in 2013 and is core member

Each year, we impact 100 immigrant / ethnic music youths, 1,000 school students (K-12) here in the Bay Area as well as their respective music tradition bearers around the world, 3,000 demographically diverse multi-generational Bay Area audiences, and 15,000 online viewers from across the US. Consisting of a core ensemble of 50 Bay Area youth musicians and vocalists from various countries of origin. Also, we partner with other youth ensembles performing traditional music to create a multi-dimensional artistic interchange that captivates viewers. To date, we have featured youth artists from China, India, Tibet, Korea, and Turkey. Over the next 3 years, 300 participating youth musicians, 30 master artists, and 9,000 youth audience members in Bay Area will their highly developed musical skills and cultural exchange skills to design social change solutions to global problems facing youth.

We take traditional music and evolve it for the 21st century. Our goal is that by 2020, 1 million kids around the world will have full access to right brain creative, emotional and cultural in order to become well-equipped global citizens who can solve global problems. By 2020, we intend to train 1,000 music teachers to bring global music education to 1 million children in schools around the world, employ 100 diverse music masters to teach 10,000 youth musicians, and provide 100 million Pangu Music users universal access to the traditional, classical and indigenous music of the world.

We are building a hybrid business model. Our work will be powered by Pangu Music, an interactive global music learning and performing platform using no latency multi-way live-streaming. As a social venture that can generate profits, Pangu Music’s revenues can be re-invested back into the non-profit to create increasing financial sustainability. We have designed a 3-year campaign to get this project operating year round at full capacity.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Amigos y familiares, Individuos, Fundaciones, Gobierno regional, Gobierno nacional.

There are numerous organizations directly addressing the root causes of social violence through human rights activism, domestic violence shelters, or promoting democracy abroad. However, these organizations tend to promote Western- centric concepts, social structures, history and content. In contrast, we use world music training to open up multiple perspectives and empathy pathways in children where there were none before, teaching them how to embrace and navigate fundamental differences, and how to become global citizens.

For years, the SFWMF prided itself on showcasing cultural masters from around the world, commissioning them in elaborate stage productions on mainstream American stages to raise visibility for marginalized cultures. In 2007, all that changed when a Kurdish Youth Choir that sang on our stages returned to Turkey and got thrown in jail for allegedly “propagating separatism abroad”. That was a turning point for Founder Michael Santoro. Human rights, political and economic oppression became real issues for the festival. After getting the Kurdish youths’ criminal charges dismissed in 2008, Michael set out to create a new music space for the next generation to engage with each others’ differences. The Int'l Youth Orchestra was born.

Today, our organization is lead by Executive Director Yafonne Chen, Executive Producer & Founder Michael Santoro, and Global Music Director Imamyar Hasanov, supported by a 10 member multi-cultural Board of Directors. Our Management Team combines more than 10 years experience in arts administration, legal and financial management. Our Creative Team combines over 20 years of music producing and teaching across many cultures.

How does your idea help cultivate empathy skills to strengthen communities and equip young people to become leaders of change?

Our Int’l Youth Orchestra initiates music and social dialogues between ethnic youths from many cultures, having diverse global perspectives, to promote and preserve ethnic music here in the Bay Area, and to provide youth from endangered cultures of the world a voice to express themselves through their traditional music, while challenging them to learn about the global issues facing their peers around the world. Each year, members play complex pieces from other cultures and their own in order to hone their creative, empathetic, leadership, and critical thinking skills. Now in our 5th year, 100 members, grades 5-12, engage in over 100 hours of weekend rehearsals in preparation for their annual performances w/ master artists around the world.

Partnerships with local ethnic masters are essential to this orchestra. This dialogue between youth from many countries, having diverse global perspectives, is absolutely essential in order to create synergy, appreciation and understanding between younger generations. The showcase of these efforts our annual Festival gives audience members from diverse cross sections of the community a chance to see these relationships come to life.

Desafíos

Intellectual Property infringements, lack of financial capital, and growing costs of domestic and international travel, community apathy, might hinder the true potential and growth of the International Youth Orchestra. To overcome these challenges, we have hired a team of legal professionals to oversee the marketing and branding of this youth orchestra, designed a 3 years fundraising campaign to get the youth orchestra operating at year-round full capacity, pursue sponsorship opportunities from major airlines and travel programs, house salons, and scholarship programs for youth.

Immigrants often lack a meaningful social network. Wetravel gives immigrants a tool to better integrate into their new communities through travel. Wetravel is a platform for group trips lead by immigrants to their home countries. Wetravel assists with tour planning, execution and promotion.

any new immigrant could find meaningful connections in their new community by organizing a trip to their home country?

Immigrants are one of the most under-served groups in our society. Especially newly arrived immigrants lack a meaningful social network, language skills and interpersonal connections. This is partly responsible for lower salaries or even unemployment among immigrants.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Wetravel gives immigrants a tool to better integrate into their new communities through travel. Wetravel serves as a platform for group tours lead by immigrants to their home countries. We help immigrants organize tours to their home country and promotes these tours.

Travel is one of the most effective way to put yourself in someone else shoes. Through the facilitation of tours lead by immigrants, we cultivates empathy in these communities. The tour organizers (many of them young people) learn leadership skills by taking the responsibility to lead a tour.

Sabu Joseph is an immigrant from India. He works as an orderly at a home for the elderly. Despite having lived in his new community for a few years, he feels a lack of social connections.

He organizes a trip to his home country, India. 4 people decide to join him to his birth place. Sabu remains close friends will most of them after their return, enriching Sabu's social life. This has also economic benefits. The other travelers covered Sabu's costs of traveling to his home country. But even more important, the new social connections in his community have helped Sabu improve his language skills and even helped him find a better job.

Wetravel is a for-profit organization. As Wetravel is a marketplace for group trips lead by immigrant, it's main revenue stems from a marketplace fee (ranging from 5-14%) that is charged for escrow, credit card and insurance services.

As Wetravel offers fully guided tours, traditional tour operators such as Intrepid or G-adventures are our main competitors. Our marketplace with immigrant lead tours allows us to surpass them by offering a more authentic travel experience. By partnering with local travel agencies in the destination countries, the tours offered by Wetravel and lead by immigrants are also highly cost efficient.

The vision for wetravel was born when I was in India a few years ago. While there, I met a group of three Swiss travelers and a young Indian, Sabu, who also lived in Switzerland. They met back in Zurich, and even though they didn’t know one another well, Sabu proposed them to travel with him to his birth place in India. After the trip, all three Swiss said that this was by far the best trip they ever had. And despite paying for Sabu’s expenses, they ended up paying less because Sabu got them all local deals. Sabu did not organize the trip to earn money, he did so to enlarge his social network in Switzerland. Through the trip, Sabu improved his language skills and better integrated into his new community.

Wetravel partners with various immigrant organization, such as the Turkish American Association of California, to find young immigrants that are passionate about showing their home country to other members of their community. Through these partnerships, we assure that the tour organizers are vested for. These partnerships also help us measure our impact after each organized tour.

Desafíos

One challenge is quality control. Wetravel needs to assure that each tour is organized and carried out according to appropriate tourism standards. To achieve this, Wetravel partners with local travel agencies in the destination countries. This way, young immigrants with little experience organizing a tour are empowered to lead a tour to their home countries.

Another challenge is scale. In order to achieve scale, Wetravel has established an online platform to allow more people to organize trips to their home countries.

Resource biz dedicated to widely accessible learning through play materials (make your own instructions usually an option), trilingual materials to break the "better/worse" perception for bilingual kids and encourage language/geographical/cultural play, "new heroes" series, and more.

Our materials cause an outbreak of peace and focused environmental change?

Old heroes, storylines and creative play scenarios from a less populated and human dominated planetary environment...kids are still playing war, conquest, good guys and bad guys when we so need excitement and strength building around peacemakers, innovators and dedicated changemakers.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

publishing and educational materials as widely accessible as possible for alternative imaginary play, new heroes and games, materials that are set in a friendly, sustainable lifestyles world. We are not the only ones with this vision, but have some very specific background and focused criteria as well as our own creative, tested products.

Nonviolent chase games example from 4 years on a preschool playground. Decrease in complaints, injuries during play, also perpetuated by the children only after first two years (entered childhood "folklore" games). Those games and more going out this winter to 250 new parent families through a parent education organization. Recently, 135 preschoolers in Costa Rica and 100 in Oregon could not be "tricked" into losing their calm breathing, and also showed us their "strength/fuerte" (little biceps) to be peacemakers because it takes strength. Readings in schools led to stories about making friends across language barriers, to children making their own books, and to learning math through origami. Also to reducing behavior problems.

Impact so far is in Oregon with children over the last ten years, in Costa Rica with children in the last two years. A highlight is a lunch conversation after some weeks of using nonviolent chase games and other strategies with 5 year olds. One boy says to another "Remember yesterday on the play ground when you hit me and I tried to pull you off the slide?" Boy 2: "Yeah?" Boy 1: "Let's don't do that anymore, it's no fun."

Since we are dedicated to accessibility and sustainability, many strategies and materials will be available for download as well as license (if not free) to other businesses and distributors in their own countries or locales, to decrease carbon costs and encourage local activism and ownership of educational change.

Indiegogo campaign in Aug/Sept may help raise the $1,500 to $2,000 left in production costs, with donors having the option to donate reward sets to parent education NGO as well as receive their own 1st run of materials. After that, in business with publishing company and first materials; next is website and agreements with other producers to carry their materials. Third is to follow through on creating other products still in prototype/idea form.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Individuos, Organizaciones no gubernamentales, Empresas, Clientes.

Running out of time...yes, there are others carrying their pieces of the ecoweb of solutions. Still, some of what we have done seems to be hard to find or unique so will be adding our voice and vision to the blend, as well as collaborating and showcasing the efforts of others with our websites.

Backlog of creative curriculum of all kinds, ready to move forward fast in the next 6 months (finally have reserved time set aside for it!)

To feel empathy for someone, you must FEEL empathy. Many of us, especially men, have been taught to ignore our emotions. iFeelio gives young men a completely private space on their phones to express their emotions as they happen. **Feel your feelings so you can connect with others.**

What if an app inspired men to appreciate their feelings?

As we grow older, society teaches us that certain emotions are not OK to feel. You should not be angry, upset, confused, sad, etc. Few populations feel this pain more than men. According to sociologist Michael Kimmel, "60 to 70 percent of men still agree with the notion that masculinity depends on emotional stoicism — never showing fear, never showing pain." Young men want to feel, they are just taught not to do so.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Help young men realize that it's OK to feel, by leveraging a tool familiar to them -- their phone. iFeelio is an app that anyone can download and use anonymously. You answer two questions: "How do I feel?" and "What is happening?" When you have an emotion and you don't feel comfortable expressing it to anyone else, iFeelio is your spot to release. Be honest with yourself because nobody else is listening. As you use the app more, you start to see your emotional patterns and gain confidence as to why you feel the way you do. As you have more confidence in what you feel, you have more courage to speak it to others.

I built iFeelio for me, so I will tell a personal story. I applied to a contest at Stanford last year and received news that I wasn't selected. I immediately pulled out iFeelio and started to document my feelings. I felt angry. I felt frustrated. I felt livid. Then I felt sad. I felt hurt. I felt rejected. Then I felt grateful. I felt empowered. I felt determined. I felt determined that what I had built actually worked. It took me from furious to grateful in mere minutes. It allowed me to allow myself to feel. Before iFeelio, I would have been so afraid of my anger that I would have just bottled it up, just as I did when Stanford didn't select me as an undergrad. This time around, I left feeling grateful, not bitter.

The app has been downloaded in over 50 countries with very little marketing push. More than anything, the most valuable info is the user feedback. I have received numerous overwhelmingly positive (and often unprovoked) testimonials. A friend of mine wanted to use the app so badly before it was available that he used the basic demo on the website, even though it couldn't save. A woman (yes, many women use it as well) told me, "Jim, you have no idea how much this is changing my life," and then told me for 2 hours how using it for 3 weeks changed her relationship with her mom, her ex-husband, and her estranged brother. Another man, when discovering I created the app, chased me down into the bathroom and told me how he used iFeelio when he was traveling in Brazil and it really helped him through some hard times. As more people use iFeelio, more of these life-changing moments will happen.

The goal is to give young men all across the world the freedom to feel. Over the next 10 years, the strategy is to have information technology that is globally available and culturally appropriate. We will start small, with local organizations (e.g., universities, high schools, sports teams) and then international ones (e.g., AIESEC, Engineers Without Borders) to have conversations locally and globally about how men feel about feeling. We will raise the global awareness of why it is important that men feel, and then give them tools to improve.

iFeelio has a give-what-(and-when)-you-want business model. Users, when inspired, can thank me personally by giving me the equivalent of a "tea" or "dinner" and they will receive a playful animated GIF of my reaction. For example, if 10,000 people use the app, and 10% of people give me a tea per month (~$4 each), I will receive $4,800 per month to further visually improve the app and to help the right individuals find this tool.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Amigos y familiares.

Society is recognizing the importance of emotions. The concepts of empathy, compassion, vulnerability, and emotional intelligence are being championed by groups such as Ashoka, IDEO, the Charter for Compassion, and Brene Brown. People are speaking out against the man-box as well (many talks on TED, books, and blogs). iFeelio provides a tool to complement these efforts. Other technologies use algorithms to find your emotional patterns and are often public, whereas iFeelio helps you utilize your human skills and courage to find your own patterns within the safety of a private space.

"How do you feel right now?" A beautiful woman had asked me this question and I froze. Despite having a world-class education, I couldn't answer such a basic human question. For years, I had learned to distrust my emotions so much that I stopped listening to them. While consulting for Fortune 500 companies, I noticed that emotions held tremendous insight into our lives. It clicked. I needed to understand my own emotions. Be the change I wished to see in the world. So I coded iFeelio in two weeks. Over the next 8 months, I experienced some of the most tumultuous emotions of my life. Using iFeelio, I gained the courage to feel the emotions that I might have otherwise bottled up for years. To date, I have documented 2,474 emotional moments.

I have many advisors from different sectors: business professors, spiritual leaders, consultants, psychologists, etc. The official team is just me, and I am patient to add people as I want to feel confident that we are aligned in the mission. As iFeelio grows, I will add 3 board members--an expert in neuroscience, a spiritual leader of men, and a technology leader. I will also add an engineer and designer to improve the app and branding.

On which of the following California counties does your project focus its impact? (check all that apply):

San Mateo, Santa Clara, Otro.

How does your idea help cultivate empathy skills to strengthen communities and equip young people to become leaders of change?

The ability to feel another's feelings (emotional empathy) is vital to strengthening community and creating and reacting to change. iFeelio helps people cultivate empathy by allowing themselves to feel again. To feel the pain of a neighbor you have to feel pain in yourself. If you have blocked yourself from feeling such things, then you cannot empathize. iFeelio helps to remove internal barriers to feeling, so that individuals can reconnect with themselves and therefore with others. We focus on young men, because they have more barriers than many. Our approach is two-fold: a private app where users can quickly journal about their emotions in context and in-person discussions about how we feel about feeling.

Needs/Offers

Necesidad

Oferta

Advice on innovation, information technology, intercultural communication, and/or emotions.

Cuéntanos sobre tus alianzas.

I recently heard the maxim, "early to bed, early to rise, and don't forget to advertise." Partnerships are currently my weakness because I have been afraid to advertise. They are also my greatest potential strength. At the advice of someone through this opportunity, I reached out to at least 14 other entrants to suggest how iFeelio could complement their efforts because who cares about empathy more than the other applicants?

Desafíos

My main challenge is to spread iFeelio in a manner beyond one-to-one conversations. It strongly appeals to individuals and yet they don't seem to spread it to their friends. This is why it is vital for me to have partnerships, and more importantly, to interact directly with potential users. Through partnerships, I could provide the app and the in-person conversations that may lead someone to use the app.

Another challenge is in getting feedback on how the app is used since it is completely private. Again, developing partnerships and communication channels will improve this communication.

Does your project use any of the following approaches to cultivate community members as empathetic and collaborative leaders?

creating a safe space, developing emotional competency, building leadership skills, storytelling, identifying shared values and differences, instilling courage, enabling action.

Onward is a multi-film, partnership-driven campaign that will advance greater empathy, understanding, and action in support of immigrants. We'll deploy film screenings, dialogues, data presentations and intercultural exchanges that strengthen community ties throughout the Bay Area.

What if the leaders of the future are people who embrace our cultural differences as an opportunity to make our communities better and stronger?

Recent research indicates is a significant gap of understanding between immigration experts and the general public. At a time when Silicon Valley's immigration population is the fastest growing in the country--and as our nation continues to be divided on this topic--it is critical that our future leaders understand the implications of certain policies and how we can take steps to insure vibrant, diverse, and harmonious communities.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

When people have an opportunity to walk in other's shoes, the experience can be transformative. Active Voice's model leverages the most powerful, nuanced films that allow for viewers to push past didactic headlines and understand issues from a lens of empathy. ONWARD will deploy these tactics to emotionally engage audiences around the experiences of immigrants and DREAMers, present them with data about the challenges faced by immigrants and the opportunities immigrants bring to our communities, and then walk them toward concrete action steps to support more vibrant and diverse communities.

We conducted a series of focus groups around the country over the past year, and saw that the power of film and data can be catalytic. One college student, after watching a clip from the documentary Documented and learning more about the number of DREAMers awaiting citizenship status in the US said: “I went from not caring [to caring]. It doesn’t affect me, but I want to be affected now. I will interact with [immigrants] differently, vote differently.” This is the kind of change we'd like to spark on a broader level in the Silicon Valley region.

Our focus groups and test screenings thus far have revealed that the combination of film and data can help raise awareness, and motivate people to take action in some way. Now that we're ready to launch the project, we'll leverage this initiative to: 1) inform people "beyond the choir" about local immigration policies in light of the national picture, 2) raise the visibility of immigrant-serving and immigrant advocacy organizations, and 3) spark greater support for immigrant-friendly policy initiatives and programs, either through voting, volunteerism, or donation

We're also developing a national level initiative that will allow us to work with nationally networked immigrant serving organizations to connect them with the latest films and data, and to help them think strategically about how to use those to enhance their efforts to engage beyond the choir. We're also consulting with policy experts at Migration Policy Institute and the Brookings Institute to identify the most pressing policy opportunities so that we can connect our work to those policy goals. We're eager to take a deep dive in the Bay Area to advance local goals.

The MacArthur Foundation supported our initial research phase, and has invited a proposal for national level engagement. We are also actively engaging community foundations in the Southeast US to address the particular need there. A major component of our national work will involve providing resources to and build the capacity of nationally networked orgs, so that our efforts can live on in their ongoing work.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Fundaciones.

Over the past several years, communications experts have made attempts to address misinformation about immigration by engaging people who are beyond the choir. This has given rise to initiatives like Bibles, Badges & Business (BBB), which have made positive strides to generate support from unlikely allies, but continue to look for ways to connect with new audiences and grow their work. Given the dynamic nature of migration patterns and policies, BBB Campaign Manager Patty First explains, “We still want more people to engage in the debate and develop a better understanding of immigration."

Active Voice has worked with films about immigration for over a decade. In the past several years, we've worked to 1) sensitize people to the immigrant experience, 2) prompt dialogue between people who disagree on the issues, and 3) foster bridge building between long-term residents and immigrant newcomers. While comprehensive immigration reform is stalled in Congress, there are still very urgent policy-related needs that affect immigrants on a local and state-based level. And research shows that the majority of Americans are largely uninformed on the policies and have no idea what the implications of various policy decisions are. If we are to move onward, it will be critical to evoke empathy and prompt smarter policy decisions.

Active Voice Executive Director will oversee the project. With a decade of experience working at the intersection of media and social change, Shaady oversees and conceptualizes AV's diverse portfolio of film campaigns and consulting projects.

Active Voice Program Director Sahar Driver will manage the project, partnerships, and activities. She brings a diverse range of experience from the television industry, human rights, and higher education.

How does your idea help cultivate empathy skills to strengthen communities and equip young people to become leaders of change?

Since 2001, Active Voice has leveraged the emotional power of films and documentaries to spark greater empathy in support of immigrants. By bringing the latest films about immigration to high school and college-aged youth throughout the Bay Area, we'll spark awareness, openness, and dialogue about the meaning of immigrant contributions throughout the Bay Area. We'll link these experiences to presentations of local data and statistics about how immigrants are contributing to creating more vibrant communities throughout the Bay Area, and will connect motivated viewers with opportunities to get involved in local organizing and volunteer efforts to support immigrants in our community.

People Acting in Community Together

Desafíos

Many immigrant serving organizations tend to be under-resourced and lack the capacity and staff to pull off great community events. So Active Voice staff will take this on by working closely with our partner organizations and handling the bulk of coordination and promotion to ensure successful events that reach our target audiences.

Based on the widely recognized Arigatou International Learning to Live Together manual, Kokoro is a unique and interactive virtual global community that promotes intercultural and interfaith learning and collaboration among children and youth to tackle issues that affect their societies.

Children and youth could connect with each other virtually, accross religions and cultures, to collaborate on initiatives that can transform their communities and the world?

The increasing level of religious intolerance, racial discrimination, prejudices, stereotypes that lead to violent conflicts require that children learn about other cultures and beliefs. A gap exists in digital games for developing global citizenship. Particularly, games that teach about other cultures and beliefs, that lead to collaborative and global action and support or initiate projects that promote peace, mutual understanding and respect.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Kokoro aims to create a unique global digital game and platform that connects children and youth from around the world with each other.
Our platform's goals are:
• To provide opportunities for children and youth to develop as global
citizens and take collective action on topics that affect them;
• To promote collaborative learning and problem solving among children and youth across countries and cultures;
• To promote respect, responsibility, empathy and reconciliation.
• To nurture children’s and youth’s capacity to contribute to a culture of
peace.

The platform aims to create spaces for children youth to connect with real life projects, learn about initiatives from NGOs and promote spaces to develop collaborative actions.

As a result of a physical workshop based on the Learning to Live Together manual, a young boy in India decided to go door to door and start collecting one cup of rice from his neighbours to distribute among the hungry in his community. He saw that just one cup of rice could make a difference when added up. Imagine this boy could inspire not only those children in his community, but around the world, transforming his initiative into a global movement. Or connect with organizations promoting child rights, or use his creativity to propose solutions to challenges and problems presented in a digital game that can inspire many more youth; or develop further critical thinking to propose alternatives to other problems of violence and poverty.

Kokoro is in its initial conception and has not been developed yet as a digital game.

Once Kokoro is developed as a digital game, the following strategies are envisioned:
Partnerships with schools where Kokoro can be implemented as part of a blended approach to citizenship education;
Connect schools and children around the world through the virtual platform to work together on global projects;
Partner with technology companies to bring smart phones and tablets to the developing world and to those areas most marginalized where religious and ethnic fundamentalism fuels conflicts to connect children and youth, challenge their prejudices and develop their collaborative skills.

We plan to gather together a consortium of partners to help develop and finance the game and platform. In addition to funding, partners will have the opportunity to offer valuable advice and support for the development and dissemination of Kokoro.

The Consortium will be formed by five to six organizations that have expertise in Children’s participation, Interfaith and Intercultural learning, Technology, Education and Peace building.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Fundaciones, Organizaciones no gubernamentales.

Peace building games and games for change are a growing niche in the gaming marketplace. Businesses such as Take Action games, Gamelab and Tiltfactor develop games that address social and humanitarian issues. The Games for Change festival recognizes and awards initiatives in this area. Kokoro differs in that, in line with the principles of our Learning to Live Together manual, it offers not only space for individual learning and reflection, but also promotes interaction with others and with social projects, and collaborative action, both within the game and in children's own communities.

The Learning to Live Together Programme of Arigatou International is now being implemented in more than 30 countries. During the process of implementation we have impacted more than 8000 children and youth, who are now peace builders, helping to change their communities; when I leave each location where the program is being implemented, I always asked myself: and how can we continue connecting these amazing youth? what if we had a platform that they can use in fun and interactive ways to further their learning and collaborate, what if the time they spend in the Internet can be used to challenge their prejudices, discuss issues that affect them and collaborate? What if we make the program a digital game and a collaborative platform?

Maria Lucia Uribe, Director Arigatou International (Founder)

Valérie De Pauw, Elearning Program Manager Arigatou International (Staff)

Scot Osterweil, Creative Director of the MIT Education Arcade (Developer, Advisor)

Josh Sheldon Educational Technologist MIT Education Arcade (Developer, Advisor)

Through a consortium of funding partners, we plan to further diversify the project's available expertise and staff.

LifeStor Digital Storytelling Archive beautifully curates the important stories that have touched our lives. It helps to us enjoy our achievements and find happiness and contentment in our lives.

What if we could see everyone's stories from their point of view?

Everyone needs a way to express their life.
Violence among children and youth is a problem worldwide. Every day 227 children and youth aged 0-19 die as a result of interpersonal violence. Evidence shows that preschool enrichment and social development programmes which target children early in life can prevent aggression, improve social skills, boost educational achievement and improve job prospects.

Solución: ¿Cuál es la solución propuesta?

Lifestor is a digital story archive to help storytellers of any age recognise that their lives are important.
The digital aspect allows global delivery and sharing of the service. Storytelling has been used since language began to impart knowledge in a memorable way. Children in particular respond to learning in this way. Coupling storytelling with SEL (social and emotional learning) allows users enjoy the benefit from LifeStor's storytelling archive. Memories and stories are securely archived so user's can revisit their achievements and grow their stories by collaborating and saving for future generations.

My childhood was sprinkled with my mothers magic. This project is based on the imaginative play she developed with my children.
One weekend she was minding my kids, when I came to collect them they told me they had been at McDonalds. I was horrified! The kids explained later that it was an imaginary trip. Mum made it real by getting the McDonald bags, toys hats in advance and replaced the food with her own so they could tell their friends they had been there. I believe grandparents can have a special role in grandchildren's lives by handing on knowledge through experience. This will encourage intercultural and intergenerational understanding. http://goo.gl/bnPJBL http://goo.gl/RDWJq1

The National Institute of Play was founded by Dr Stuart Brown to study & bring the benefits of play in public life. He has interviewed 8,000 people about their childhoods and his data suggests that a lack of opportunities for unstructured, imaginative play can keep children from growing into happy, well-adjusted adults. “Free play,” as scientists call it, is critical for becoming socially adept adults, coping with stress and building cognitive skills. Research into animal behaviour confirms play’s benefits and establishes its evolutionary importance. Combining storytelling with play creates powerful learning tools (Drs DeRosier & Mercer, 2007). Improving student behavior: Through a story telling education programme in 1975 students in grade K2,3-5 found significant improvement in social behaviour.
LifeStor's storytelling platform will use this knowledge.

LifeStor is a positive social network archive, it can globally create societal change. It is a support resource for health and education. To create initial impact we are beginning with children. Encouraging grandparents to volunteer to help with this project within the school system begins a new way for families to be involved in education.
LifeStor gives people a voice and safely captures our social history. With permission this data can be harvested for research. Research into the physiological responses to recording stories/memories may prove the positive impact of this exercise.

Lifestor a for-profit social enterprise to create change, as such has no exit. Company profits support storytellers in adverse conditions and research. We seek safe equity and are planning to use crowdfunding to generate 200K startup funds. We are a service company and use a varied user cost subscription model. Shortly we will add an ecommerce site to help our storytellers to use their curated stories to create their own bespoke products.

Financiación: ¿Cómo se sustenta su proyecto económicamente?

Amigos y familiares, Individuos, Fundaciones, Empresas, Gobierno regional, Gobierno nacional, Clientes, Otro.

Our competition is Ancestry.com, Dropbox and Shutterfly. We shall be a global social platform but there is where the similarly ends. Our mission is People first creates societal change. We are a empathic, ethical and trustworthy company striving to gain the trust of storytellers. We see the way forward through collaboration and partnering with other bodies to exchange and share data for the greater good. We believe we are developing an untapped market and hope this will allow us to scale rapidly. What makes us different is we are safeguarding a live social history bank for the future.

Through my work I increasingly became aware that my design training didn't equip me to solve some of the problems that my clients were asking of me. It interested me that they seemed to be based around memories, stories etc
While I designed a home for some Magdalene Women in Dublin city I had a nagging feeling I hadn't completed an important aspect of the job. Discussing with the women what they wanted in their new home, they all began with the words" The reason I'm here" and it was odd. It took me some time to work out that what they needed was a way to tell their story, so they could move on with their lives. It struck me that everyone needs a simple, safe way to tell their story. It's the missing piece of the jigsaw of our lives.

I am the sole founder of LifeStor and have been researching and developing an MVP since 2012 full time. We are a lean team at present to give project every chance of success; Freelance CTO John Chambers and Mentor Dermot Casey, Near Future Dublin. We are continuing to built up a network of contacts throughout universities, IT's and other businesses networks, so that when we are ready to scale we will use these contacts. Member of IC4. Dublin
