Our first project were the Shades that were constructed with information on breast feeding: These shades were contructed for peope who wait for long periods along busy roads, under the scorching sun, or torrential rain with no shelter is a situation the people of Kampala and other parts of Uganda, know well. In particular, mothers have nowhere to breastfeed from and the elderly and vulnerable have no designated places to sit.
These shades also provide critically needed venues for public health education on the benefits of breast feeding in addressing malnutrition and also cervical cancer screening for women and HIV/AIDS.

Fruit Trees shades are planted in garden boundaries of communities: These fruits are a source of Vitamin C and help fight malnutrition in children. The trees also act as wind breakers.

Smart energy: This is our innovation and involvement in encouraging the use of energy saving stoves and bulbs to reduce the dependency on too much wood energy. Our research is also focusing on rocks that store energy to preserve heat for cooking.

Solar energy: We are yet to provide affordable solar panels for lighting 2 rooms and charging a mobile phone.We also aim at providing energy saving bulbs.

Eco-Friendly Toilets; This is a programme for toilets which convert human fecal material into manure.

Building and conserving natural (spring) water sources, wetlands and reservoirs.

Problema

SHADES for Health is an environmental Health Initiative that started with offering shades that provider vital protection against elements of weather for women and other community members. They are amenities that also provide educational resources to improve the health and well-being of commuters, but particularly for the elderly, vulnerable and mothers with babies. Our shades, were built displaying messages about breastfeeding and Cancer prevention. We have since developed the initiative to focus on purely environmental Health needs.

Solución

Shades, Environmental health interventions and sustainable use of resources. When we link health to our environment, people can understand it better and respond. I got this idea from the community in Uganda where I live. The problems of Uganda are many, from dust, traffic jams, bodaboda (motor cycle) accidents, and poor pavements among others. This idea is implemented through coordination with the relevant city authorities, mainly city planners, expected beneficiaries, like women and health groups and local authorities.

This is an interactive community model , where the communities are helped to understand their health and how the environment managed sustainably can be a key to better health. A situational analysis will be conducted to evaluate the pre-selection needs for specific areas.The project also promotes safety in independent living, healthy lifestyle at work and at home. People get protection from ultra violet sun-rays that keep their bodies healthy. They are also protected from the dusty roads and accidents. This campaign also provides tree shades and will be an effort in promoting a better environment. Trees will give a refreshing feel to the city, and "green Uganda" again. These trees will also help to trap the dust in communities in the dry season. It is expected that at least 5% of women and breast feeding mothers who use the shades and are literate, will respond to the Pap smear cancer test, for assessment on status of cells in the cervix for cervical cancer and breastfeed their babies regular. It is expected that more breastfeeding children, will not have to wait long to be breast fed, within the travel period and this will be one step towards addressing malnutrition of children under 5 years.
