In 2010 the municipality of San Vicente del Raspeig published a sociological study which showed that a high percentage of secondary school students of that municipality had prejudicial attitudes and stereotypes that afterwards derived, actually or potentially, into xenophobic behavior with regards to the immigrant population.
The conventional media has great influence on students and disseminate prejudice and stereotypes about immigrants, youngsters, infants, women or handicapped people, through advertising, news, fiction or any other audiovisual document.
It is therefore necessary that these students have knowledge, attitude and resources to identify and prevent the reproduction of prejudices and social stereotypes, as well as media to produce content free of them.
San Vicente del Raspeig has a population of 53,126 inhabitants, placed in the province of Alicante, Spain. 400 residents of this municipality are foreigners and a 15% of those are under 16 years old. In Spain currently live 5,500,000 immigrants, 500,000 are between 10 and 18 years old.

Our proposal is to provide knowledge, attitudes and procedures to students in Secondary Education in San Vicente del Raspeig through workshops in their school, I.E. Nº5, to meet this need. In addition, participants use social networks to disseminate the content developed in the workshop.
Social networks are an ideal vehicle to carry out this activity because studies show that nearly 80% of young people in Spain ordinarily use this media type, receiving and transmitting information. Furthermore, social networks are characterized by being very accessible —in computers and mobile devices— at a relatively low economic cost. The social networks we use are blogs and social networks such as Facebook, Tuenti, Google +, Twitter and Storify. Moreover, the scope and impact provided by the use of social networking is great.

Sociologists and psychologists say that a positive opinion about a person or group produces a positive attitude and behavior toward them. The idea is that students participating in the workshop can intervene at any stage of the communication process to disseminate information and content free of prejudices and social stereotypes on topics that interest them actively.
The purpose of this project is that participants in the workshop use for our purpose a horizontal communication model, which is characteristic of citizen or participatory journalism.
In this sense, social networking sites, because of their characteristics (access, usability and transcendence) are particularly suitable for students of Secondary Education to perfectly implement this participatory communication scheme.

We live in difficult times. The riots in Paris in 2005, or the most recent occurred in London, with racial conflict and xenophobic background keep us very concerned but we live them far from our day-to-day. But when one takes part in a conversation in which a Spanish student says that a North African person living in Spain deserves the same rights as a Spanish citizen but they would never share the swimming pool with them, one understands that the problems are not as far as one supposes, the prejudices are subtly present in the minds of people and I think it's necessary to act to prevent the problem from getting bigger and try to eliminate it. Then I wonder: May social networks be the end of prejudice? I definitely think so.

As we are in the initial phase of the project, working with a group of fifteen students in the Secondary School I.E. No. 5 in San Vicente del Raspeig, it is still early to draw definitive conclusions. The interesting thing about using social networking as a vehicle for content distribution is that the actions transcend the participants, as researchers and social networks experts James H. Fowler and Christakis Nicolas point out in his book "Connected." The contents poured in social networks such as Facebook,Twitter, Google+ spread on the network exponentially.

The project should be extended to other cities and implement it in education and training areas. But we are talking about education and to harvesting the rewards of the investment requires time, patience and perseverance. Also, it is necessary to work with teachers in schools and parents, as well as other social groups, associations, companies, institutions and citizens. You just have to adapt the project to the circumstances.

So far I have not found any obstacle. The schools of San Vicente del Raspeig as well as the Council have shown interest and will to cooperate with the project.

New information technologies have led to the horizontal model of social communication. This project is within the current trend in content creation and dissemination of information horizontally based social networks. The conventional media are trying to adapt its business model to the trend. The future is to involve citizens in the creation of informative content and give them more control in the process. This project can serve as base to the field of the local press.

We firmly believe that this is the way forward. If goals are not met, the project evaluation should reflect what elements are necessary to modify the process to achieve the targets.

The involvement of Educative Institutions is very important to ensure the continuity of the project. In this sense is necessary the cooperation of councils and the regional government. Regarding our offer, we can cooperate within our material, economic and human means in any project related to Citizen Participation.
