University of Southern California

Sounds like a successful program. Great integration of institutional resources (school and county resources). Are there possible ways to expand this program to incorporate more participants? Is this a program focusing on all ages, or youth in particular? Does the school district help promote the services that you provide, or is it primarily done through City Parks? Could you use the youth volunteers as ambassadors for the programs in the schools?

Best wishes for continued success.

Thank you for your kind and interesting remarks. In response to the first comment: learning skills and sportsmanship are our first concerns. Competition is not so much a factor except as each individual "competes" with his or her first effort in order to give themselves a better effort, ie., putting the bar up a notch. The institutions are great. The schools would like to see us add a program like our current Youth Practices, but geared to the younger teens, a modified or junior high program. Syracuse Parks is particularly helpful and receptive to ideas. We have proposed a Youth Coaching Program, to be conducted by Summer Parks in concert with youth recommendations from City high school coaches. We have proposed a Speakers Bureau of Youth Coaches who have completed the Coaching program.

The Community Practices which use the same model--modified somewhat depending upon available volunteer coach/teachers--serve families. These are out and out fun.

It is good to see that even after your retirement you are continuing to put your time and expertise back into the society.

Please remember to teach your young adults that winning is not everything; sadly the modern world tends only to reward the winners.

All the very best.
