These students are dedicated and hard working, they serve as role-models to the other students in our school and community. This program shows the world, give teens something important to do, make it relevant, and they will meet and exceed the challenge. Time and time again I have seen this program change lives, which is why I do it. I am their teacher and I am so proud.
The High School Students do Tax Reports for those in our community who don't have the means or resources to do it themselves. This past year is was vitally important in order to get the tax rebate.I have watched this program develop for the past several years and know how valuable a service it is and what a tremendous learning experience it is for the students to know that they are helping someone within the community. Recently they were the first student group allowed to file tax returns electronically direct from the classroom.
It is a fantastic program.
Amazing work that they kids are doing. I wouldn't even attempt to do my tax own returns and these motivated students are doing them gratis for the community. Teens can make a difference in the world even at their tender age. It makes me proud to be in a community district that supports innovation, motivation, and creativity. The video makes it clear the degree of fear people have re taxes. Well done.

This program is amazing! I get to see these students in class everyday doing taxes for families. Not only is it helping the community, but it helps our Dons Net Cafe business and students because of all the things VITA helps us to do. We could not do any of this without our corporate sponsors or the grants we receive. THANK YOU.
I have been involved in the D.O.N.S. program since its inception and feel that it is the most valuable course the students lucky enough to be accepted will have in their high school career. This year I had the opportunity to interview a half-dozen members for positions within the Media department and for the selection of the Media Department's Vice President.
Beyond the program's outreach activities (VIDA, community involvement, and recycling to mention a few) it exposes the participants to the values and expectations of the business world in general and the free enterprise system in particular. Personal presentation, attention to detail, meeting obligations and deadlines, and the ability to work with others to achieve common goals are unique in their high school experience.
The VITA community service program is simply amazing. This program is a collaborative effort between the IRS, the Regional Occupational Program and Santa Barbara High School. But it is the students, their teacher, Miss BK, and the IRS coordinator that make this program a success. The program started eight years ago when Miss BK and a local IRS agent (Bob) got together and agreed to try operating the VITA program with high school students as the volunteers - many people said that it could not be done with such inexperienced high school students. The students rose to the challenge beyond anyone's wildest imagination and now the program is being duplicated at high schools throughout the state. The students not only gain the job specific skills involved in preparing taxes but more importantly they gain the skills and attitudes that will make them employable in any occcupation they choose, whether that happens immediately after graduating from high school or after completing a college degree. The maturity and confidence these students gain through this experience gives them a competitive advantage in the real world. GO DONS!
Thank you so much for all the comments so far! It has been a total privilege to be on this all-star team of VITA and Virtual Enterprise students. Each day everyone learns something new that they would learn years later on the job. There is nothing better to get a head start for one's future to get certified to file taxes for those who need them!
Please note this is our 13th year doing this... Virtual Enterprise, known as the Dons Net Cafe, has been doing it for their 8th.

Many teenagers question why they take certain courses. As do many adults. (If I could, I would beam the UC faculty who created the "a through g" requirements to a remote island, so that they milk and mediate on coconuts.) Two summers ago, I walked my high-school niece, who was taking geometry, and nephew, who was taking algebra, by a row of small businesses. Does the hair dresser use geometry or algebra? No. The paralegal? No. The acupuncturist? No. The insurance agent? No. And so on. The point? High school is not teaching youth what they most need to know, and the COMMUNITY suffers for it. And then we come upon Dons Net Cafe. What a difference! The next time a President makes a State of the Union Address and invites common Americans with uncommon deeds to sit in the House gallery, I hope that Dons Net Cafe would be invited. The whole US needs to know about what teenagers can do--and do do.
As the VITA coordinator at the Dons Net Cafe, I am so proud of being a part of this business. I love the Dons Net cafe, and I am so grateful for everything I've been given here. VITA has taught me so many important lessons. I know that when I teach other volunteers, I'm teaching them something very valuable. I also know that I have made a difference in the lives of those whose taxes I have helped prepare.
I want people to realize that Katherine is 17 years old and this is her 3rd year as a tax volunteer. Katherine teaches class every Monday @lunch and we will be adding her lessons via our new web-site asap.
I am a current employee of this wonderful company, the Dons Net Cafe, and so far I'm loving every moment of it! I got interviewed by Mrs. Barbara Keyani and got the position of the Vice President of the Public Relations department and have been in the Virtual Enterprise ROP program for almost two months now. I'm enjoying learning about everything there is to about the outside world real businesses and also about all the new and old marketing rules there is to it. This will also be my first year in the V.I.T.A., and I'm strongly looking forward to learning to do taxes so that I can also help my own family members that are low income families as well. So far at the meetings every Monday at lunch at school we have been learning about the basics of it, but we waste no time at all! In everything that we do, we commit to it until it's done and makes us feel better about ourselves because of course we are all about ethonomics and based on ecologically friendly products and services. Afterall that's what the Dons Net Cafe is all about! Thank YOU!
