Hi Leondra,

It sounds like you are doing excellent work to improve health disparities and teach people to incorporate exercise and nutrition as a daily part of their routine. What would you say is the signature "nudge"--the innovative little push that helps people change their behavior and make better choices to improve the health of themselves and others?

I am interested in learning more.

Great question Amelia! The signature nudge of "Walk & Wok" is the concept of "Let's do it"! Instead of me convincing you how great you will feel after walking and how delicious Watermelon Salsa is, let's actually give it a whirl. In a 2-hour class, we walk short/long scenic routes for 30 minutes at your pace, and then we come back and cook a healthy recipe from start to finish. Additionally, the program rewards those for coming out and reaching goals with tangible incentives such as "Walk & Wok" t-shirts and water bottles.

Another nudge that "Walk & Wok" address for participants who express a desire, but has barriers to participating is the "Let's do something about it". When a twin mother said she wanted to walk but couldn't because she didn't have a stroller, we acquired one and put the other twin in a carrier. You should have seen the smiles on the faces of the twins while we walked.

The "Let's do it" extends to the cooking. In order to change nutrition behaviors, one can't just hand someone a recipe and tell them they will love it. It works wonders to have them smell the delicious scents from a Sante Fe Chicken soup and see what goes into preparing it. One participant had said that she never ate vegetables but then she agreed to try the soup, veggies and all. She said that she only tried it because she knew what was in it and suprised us by asking for seconds.
