On July 1, 2009 the judges reviewed the entries for the Changemakers “Geotourism Challenge 2009: Power of Place Sustaining the Future of Destinations” competition and would like to pass on the following feedback (listed below) for your entry. Thank you for applying and for your hard work in the field. We are excited to archive your entry to serve as a leading solution for the worldwide community of innovators. If possible, please take the time to respond to some of the provocative questions and issues that were raised by the judges. We wish you continued luck with your innovative, sustainable, and socially impactful initiatives.
All the best, The Changemakers Team.
“This was a great entry! I can clearly see the social impact but I would like to see more packaging of the idea so that it may be replicated and possibly translated to other locations.”
“I like their use of local natural resources and incorporating culture. It was interesting to see the indigenous people are trying to use the forest to help themselves and educate others. It is especially important to address these programs in the Amazon because they are sensing that indigenous people are being conformed.”
- Changemakers “Geotourism Challenge 2009: Power of Place Sustaining the Future of Destinations” Judges: National Geographic Society, United Nations Foundation, Tribe Wanted, The Green Belt Movement, Lonely Planet, Southwest Forestry University.
The opportunity for packaging this concept is there, and we work in order to promote this. The conditions enable this: the indigenous nationality owns the land and dictates its uses, they own the main tourism product (a prize-winning Ecolodge), as well as the main supporting service (air transportation, key for tourism in their territory). In addition to this, the political leadership has determined that tourism is one of the main development objectives for the nation and a clear source of sustainable development for the Achuar culture and nature. We believe there probably are other similar examples in different areas of the world. The key for our success will be integrating all these components under one common vision, led by the Achuar leadership, endorsed by the local communities and supported by all the external organizations. This is the main aim for this geotourism project. Once this scenario is achieved, then this example will be able to be replicated in other places.
