Innovación

Our project inter-culturally connects with the Mapuches Organizations of Peñalolén, Cerro Navia and Pintana communities. These organizations have achieved a socio-cultural growth that has enriched their inhabitants providing them with tools to develop participative projects. We have been part of the execution of those projects linking their cultural, associative, and participative interests; and training groups of young Mapuche people and Mapuche adults as TOURISTIC GUIDES for the development of ETHNIC TOURISTIC CIRCUITS inside the Metropolitan Region of Chile. We prepared them to comply with the requirements, have the adequate profile and fulfill the demands and creativity of a Cultural Guide.
Common objectives, participation and association links for the development of Cultural Touristic Circuits that benefit the organization by showing to the local community and to the tourist all the aspects of their culture. Providing cultural information and workshops that generate income, work and new resources for the organization and its members; educating and letting people get to know their culture, costumes, medicines, music, language, etc. In summary, the project is about the inter-cultural sustainability of the Urban and Rural Native People and their insertion in the local community; to value their Cosmo-vision.
Explain in detail why your approach is innovative
The INNOVATION of our touristic project is grounded in its integrative, associative and participative objectives (involving many local actors) that pursue a Touristic Framework, and High-quality Cultural services relevant to the communities.
Impacto
Describe the degree of success you have had to date. How do you measure, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the impact on sustainability or enhancement of local culture, environment, heritage, or aesthetics? How has it transformed or contributed to the power of place or demonstrated the sustainability of tourism? How does your approach minimize negative impacts?
The residents of a touristic place are participative actors of the local attractiveness. The organizations are active part of the experiences of Peñalolén, Cerro Navia and Pintana; they are a fundamental piece and a touristic object. That is why they are the hosts/hostess and they are who provide the services for the travelers. That benefits them in all the aspects: social, cultural, and economical. It is also and integrative experience. The community has responded to our model, high lightening our innovative vision, warmth, and special care we imprint in our circuits, as well as the work we developed with the communities to broadcast their attractions as a touristic route.
In what ways are local residents actively involved in your work, including participation and community input? How has the community responded to or benefited from your approach?
Since we have an integrative cultural stamp that creates innovative touristic forms and interest themes, the traveler feels motivated and interpreted in his/her search of new spaces. The social tourism provides spaces for friendship and communication for families, couples and/or adults. We are like a bridge that allows rescuing the wealth of people, rediscovering places and their value.
Our travelers become friends and we interpret their traveling intentions in order to make them true and pleasantly unforgettable. We have also incorporated an evaluation card that we submit at the end of our trips, so the travelers can evaluate us in all the aspects: transportation, guides, food, site tours, etc. This card allows us to improve our weaknesses.
How does your program promote traveler enthusiasm, satisfaction, and engagement with the locale?
When the travelers board our Ethnic Tour they become actors of the touristic experience along the different places they visit. They perceive, discover, and value the integral wealth of the Mapuches, Armaras or Rapanuies communities. Our bus has a native Mapuche guide who is dressed in his traditional ceremony outfit; a coordinator guide accompanies him to collaborate in the development of the experience. During the trip, the Mapuche Guide makes a presentation in Mapudungun language and Spanish regarding the highlights of the route. That way he introduces some words of his native language to the travelers.
The travelers are also invited to taste a pleasant Mapuche drink called Mudai, made of sweet wheat with honey, and also Catutos, another gastronomy delicacy.
Describe how your work helps travelers and local residents better understand the value of the area's cultural and natural heritage, and educates them on local environmental issues.
Our funding has come from offering our products in different spaces within our local community:
- The Educative Circuits: We offer these circuits to schools from Santiago de Chile. This market niche has allowed us to generate resources, even though the difficulties of the current economical situation are negatively affecting the budget of the parents of our students - the ones who finance the educative trips.
- Tours for companies: We approach the areas that serve the employees’ needs to offer our touristic product; we interpreted the recreational needs and the use of free-time around nature, countryside, and attractive places to compete with friends and surrounded by family, help to recover physical and mental health, and diminish stress. We also offer tours for the children of the employees.
- Trips for Elderly People: These are entertaining one-day trips to share free-time and life experience.
- We also present projects and bids through the National System of CHILE COMPRA.

La historia
Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers' marketing material.
My name is Carolina Gutierrez Ramirez. I am a tour operator of Innovative Circuits that deal with institutional and business social responsibility, as well as with special-interest tourism. Professionally, I’m an Administrator and Cultural Manager. I was born into the touristic life due to my wish to contribute towards a more live-learning education. We approach social and rural tourism doing research and rescuing routes that represent the Chilean traditions and costumes, we sustain them and rescue them. Anyway, we are under the tourism line that contributes to society and to the Cultural Patrimony in all its aspects. To work and find more people committed to this duty. We are an official agency of SERNATUR (National Service of Tourism). We participate of the Chilean Government program for the Elderly People, a very enriching experience that has allowed us to develop generational circuits.
What is the origin of your innovation? Tell the Changemakers and media communities what prompted you to start this initiative.
We started in the year 1996 – 1997 developing an Educative-Touristic project that used the Chilean Ministry Educational Program and interpreted its contents in the areas of: Science, Language, History, Live Geography, Civic Participation, Landscape, Nature and Environment, Vocational Formation, Public Services, Theater and Art. We developed Educative Circuits for public and private schools. We provided their students with live-learning knowledge and concrete personal experiences to learn, appreciate, and sustain the natural, historical, economical, cultural and human patrimony of the country, region and neighborhood. This particular experience and our will to generate a cultural change regarding the depredator touristic concept that has existed for so long, let us tackle educative themes in a touristic way and to talk about environmental awareness, recycling and love to the planet earth.
Describe some unique tourist experiences that your approach provides. Be specific; give illustrative examples.
Our initial approach has been to educate and appreciate the natural and cultural patrimony, its sustainability and care, developing Touristic Circuits. For example: the water travel: A route that allows the traveler to get geographically close to the start of the water cycle - the mountains-, continue visualizing the River, the use given by the individuals and society of this natural resource, the pollution of rivers, treated water plants to recycle water, etc. It is an educative route that fosters a change of attitude of the traveler. We also go through other routes where we can see areas protected by the CONAF - parks, reserves, sanctuaries, and wetlands- to preserve the natural life of species, endangered flora and fauna.
What types of partnerships or professional development would be most beneficial in spreading your innovation?
Partnerships with organizations and international organizations, as well as with international touristic operators related with the kind of tourism that we perform, committed with the environment, that respect the native people, fair tourism, and that doesn’t leave footprints. Support from advertising agencies for marketing strategies to spread out our product.
