Many thanks for sharing your comments and believing in our project, it has given us a lot of motivation and confidence for the future.

We agree completely on the two points you mentioned and surely are important subjects to consider for the future of the project: the resources needed and the availability of technology in the place

Regarding resources needed, the scenario where a big company who believes in the project's philosophy invest in the project will likely accelerate the implementation and its global impact. But since this not always happen and is difficult to predict, so far we have been doing it step by step trying to select and focus our work in the areas that bring the maximum benefit to the project. This requires hard thinking and sometimes to follow your mind instead of your heart to ensure that we're spending our few resources in the correct feature. Funds will be helpful for sure, but if it is not possible to advance with the project as a whole from the beginning, we'll start with part of it, step by step like we've done so far. I agree though, that as the project grows, it might reach very soon a point where it'll be unmanageable by a small team of two.

Regarding technology requirements inherent to the project, it is true that a lot of areas don't have access to technology and are still far from having it and therefore this will be a barrier for people to access the project in those areas. But it's being a lot of effort from many non-profit organizations and social programs that have already arrived in some areas and are reducing this gap. Wikiloc Community Maps could be a thing to do with this technology once one IT point has arrived to the area, adding value to this technology and effort. It's another option to put that IT investment to work. People would have another option/choice to use their IT facilities: to collaboratively map their territory and connect with a global audience. Wikiloc has the characteristic that connects both virtual and real world, this might be an added source of interest compared with other 100% virtual online communities.

In the other side, there are tourist destinations who have an internet access point but the speed is usually a problem. That could be solved creating a kind of base system that allows people to work offline, reducing the weight of online data or the period to transfer it. We know of several uses of the project from 'access points' like schools, internet cafés, libraries and public sector facilities. Initiatives to create a Community Map could be started even by government agencies or coordinators in the initial phase when the basic tourist services are still in development, even when people living in that area don't have access to the net yet.

On July 1, 2009 the judges reviewed the entries for the Changemakers “Geotourism Challenge 2009: Power of Place Sustaining the Future of Destinations” competition and would like to pass on the following feedback (listed below) for your entry. Thank you for applying and for your hard work in the field. We are excited to archive your entry to serve as a leading solution for the worldwide community of innovators. If possible, please take the time to respond to some of the provocative questions and issues that were raised by the judges. We wish you continued luck with your innovative, sustainable, and socially impactful initiatives.

All the best, The Changemakers Team.

“Interesting! Allowing local communities to create their own maps could be a great form of community ownership. This could be the next generation of connecting travelers and tourist’s minds in a positive way to the spaces they care about. However, this type of program needs quite a lot of funding because mapping and user-generated content like this is not an easy field to fill. While there are other ways of this type of communication, no other site allows for your own updates in the way that this project is proposing. It is kind of like The Facebook of wanting to know how to travel and keeping your own map and travels. Everyone is looking for marketing opportunities and a space for them to move forward either for a project or a business, could this be a program that would get bought up by a big company and implemented? As with any social media site, it is difficult to gain the necessary revenue from a site like this.”

“This project is innovative because it speaks to an audience with proficient technology skills. However, this also means that the social impact on the community is limited to where the technology is the on the ground. There are concerns about how to include areas with less technology. Whether it can create real social impact for the local communities where the trails run depends in part on speed of internet spread to rural areas. For the tourist it has significant potential with the right investment and partnerships.”

“Wikiloc is the 2.0 of guides. Its potential for large scale innovation is clear. We all like sharing maps of place where you have been and you are more likely to protect a space that you connect with. As an educational tool this is a fantastic project, there are just complicated barriers surrounding the availability of technology. Georeferenced maps developed as a wiki and hopefully supported locally. I'm continually amazed how many computer savvy folks there are out there who will put huge amounts of time into their pet enthusiasms. Perhaps this will be one of those hobby sites loved by its users. There have been similar pilots that this project might want to team up with. When I worked for The Nature Conservancy - China program, we used to have a similar project called "photo monitoring". I would suggest investigating into what they do.”

On another note, we've found really interesting to discover what The Nature Conservancy is doing, it immediately raises a will to discover new places and the activities that are taken place there. We like to think that Wikiloc might be a complementary tool to help promote all these projects. We see endless possibilities and we're excited to become part of it.

Again, many thanks for sharing your opinions with us

Salut i sort!
Albert.

WikiLoc is absolutely fantastic! None above, none beside! I use it a lot when travelling to other parts of the world - looking for nice hikes in the actual area. I also contribute myself with hikes I want to recommend to other nature lovers.

Congratulations to Changemakers for this selection, and to Wikiloc for their superb work. User-generated content can be so much richer than "seller" content, and the way Wikiloc has designed their site makes it very easy to cross-check with tools like Wikipedia and Panoramio. I see this site as a leader in the future of individual travel: the printed travel book can't come close to the currency afforded by these kinds of web tools.

A judge's comment questioned whether this is too dependent on technology that may not be widely available. This may be true for the people living in some of the "path" locations, but don't forget that the people VISITING the locations are putting up the paths and adding content, so it actually provides content where none might otherwise be available at all. The users of Wikiloc can both contribute to and use the results; the people within the area covered can win either way.

Seems interesting :) I will try to describe my bicycle trips in Poland - along the seaside for example.
