Within the territory, there are sectors influenced by several animal species attractive to tourism, which are under a significant vulnerability condition (such as blue whales, dolphins, Darwin's foxes, pudús and many birds). These sectors distributed along our archipelago allow developing fauna-watching-individual products in a focused manner (penguins in the north) and blue whales in the south for example thus, enabling an integral development for almost a 100 mil square meters territory. What is the goal of your innovation? Please describe in one sentence the kind of impact, change, or reform your approach is intended to achieve.

By means of a productive and sustainable approach, the bird watching of species in high vulnerability within the territory will enable a financial and conservation development.

Please write an overview of your project. Include how your approach supports or embodies geotourism or destination stewardship. This text will appear when people scroll over the icon for your entry on the map located on the competition homepage.

Although the products and the presence of these species already exist (about 10 initiatives) these are unrelated and without an approach that allows the incorporation of social and environmental values to their products, related to education, awareness creation and conservation. The idea is to relate each of these initiatives by means of a territorial approach and trademark that commercializes the nature watching products, with special importance to creating awareness on local communities about the high value and potential existing due to the presence of certain species in their territory. At present, these species are endangered by the development of other non-sustainable production initiatives, which have already damaged the territory producing that several species are in the verge of extinction. The assembling entity that we would like to start up will coordinate each of the local products in a provincial circuit that provide tourists with otter watching activities in the south flamingo watching in the center and blue whales and dolphins in the south). Above all our aim is that tourist are guided by a group of professional in the biological area who are qualified to add value to the tourist offer while training and educating local actors and indigenous communities so that they participate in some of these initiatives.

Explain in detail why your approach is innovative

We believe that for the very first time we can compete on the same grounds with the industry that has bee regularly threatening and deteriorating the environment, by considering the environment from a financial point of view and thus a figure to compete against other non-sustainable extractive and production activities that exist within the territory.

Describe the degree of success you have had to date. How do you measure, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the impact on sustainability or enhancement of local culture, environment, heritage, or aesthetics? How has it transformed or contributed to the power of place or demonstrated the sustainability of tourism? How does your approach minimize negative impacts?

In a quantitative manner, we are able to recognize the importance and impact produced by environmental issues in the territory and in particular the actor acknowledgement about the biodiversity of our territory, by recognizing the importance of some species as well as the importance of its conservation. From a qualitative point of view, we are able to affirm that thanks to the development of a national spreading communicational strategy, at present, the number of tourist coming to our island has increased, moreover tourist arrive to the island searching for specific products associated with fauna watching activities. When we started our work, there were some fauna watching companies that were consolidated. Nowadays we are able to prove the consolidation of at least 3 companies in the territory and at least other 7 new companies under normalization process each of them associated with different locations and different influencing species. Our model is not aimed at influencing the territory in a negative manner; on the contrary, our aim is to create awareness on our natural wealth and the importance of its conservation. We have worked on particular issues related to species and the scientific community will give us the proper recommendations not to alter the vulnerability of our attractions.

In what ways are local residents actively involved in your work, including participation and community input? How has the community responded to or benefited from your approach?

Residents play the main role, we have encouraged the development of new undertakings and we have contributed to businesses consolidation. They know more about the influencing specie in cultural in terms, they are determined to develop the experience with tourists, our task is to coordinate and our business deals with taking tourist in special vehicles to the different sectors where the tourist activity is performed, coordinating the services and watching activities with local communities.

How does your program promote traveler enthusiasm, satisfaction, and engagement with the locale?

We have recently started a process aimed at quality improvement with the support of the government; our intention is to install educational values within the local communities with regard to the importance of the influencing species in their territory. Educate them on the biological background of specie so that they can prepare a speech to be developed during tourists visits, thus providing the watching product with a higher cultural value. At the same time we try to coordinate other services in the sector, for example gastronomy, a delicate issue due to sanitary authority requirements, but also access to artisanship and other products from involved sectors.

Describe how your work helps travelers and local residents better understand the value of the area's cultural and natural heritage, and educates them on local environmental issues.

Well, as we have already mentioned, that is the aim of our innovation and is the reason why it has been created since the deterioration of natural heritage made us realize the need to develop a business alternative. This is how we developed the idea, within the aim of promoting, maximizing and protecting the natural heritage, by displaying the particular variety of existing species in our island, moreover in figures it is superior to Galapagos Islands.
For upcoming seasons, we have been developing the starting up and commercialization of products from locations associated with its cultural heritage, mainly architecture from 16th and 17th centuries related to statement from UNESCO on Chiloe Churches as World Heritage Sites.
Finally, we have gradually invited indigenous communities to join this heritage values circuit; however, we believe that this is a process that should be performed in a serious and calm manner.

How is your initiative currently financed? If available, provide information on your finances and organization that could help others. Please list: Annual budget, annual revenue generated, size of part-time, full-time and volunteer staff.

So far, our initiative has not required the additional financing than our contributions since our coordination task and links are virtual. However, as we mentioned our intention is to invest in vehicles specially equipped to transport passengers to remote and difficult access sites. We also have the idea of investing for the following season by being physically and electronically present.

Is your initiative financially and organizationally sustainable? If not, what is required to make it so? Is there a potential demand for your innovation?

Tourism is complicated in terms of nuances affecting it (like the present crisis), however, our initiative has a low operational cost and in connection with maximizing the proposal, we want to invest in safe and comfortable vehicles. Thanks to the increase evidenced in the last years, we believe that our initiative is financially sustainable and in addition, it will contribute to the development of the territory by means of the incorporation of services required by tourists. We would like to focus in a specialized demand mainly from abroad. Due to the variety and adaptability of the proposal, we will be able to work without overloading vulnerable resources.

What are the main barriers you encounter in managing, implementing, or replicating your innovation? What barriers keep your program from having greater impact?

As we mentioned before, our requirement is to install values, in the communities that do not take part in the undertaking, on the importance to protect, take care and value our environment, since this is what adds value to our territory and nonetheless said resources or a significant part of them are threatened by other existing industries. Thus, barriers are the citizens’ ignorance on this business alternatives and the importance of species living within the region, and in this regard, the spreading of the initiative and the education of local communities transmitting ecological values is our main barrier.

What is your plan to expand or further develop your approach? Please indicate where/how you would like to grow or enhance your innovation, or have others do so.

As we mentioned before, our specific business depends on existing local resources thus, from our perspective we have encouraged the creation of new nature watching companies and businesses so that we are able to offer a wider range of products to our clients. In this regard, the idea is to insist on the restoration of value of natural resources mainly of influencing species and jointly with scientific NGOs maximize the load to be installed and minimize the impact generated by new companies’ start-ups.

What is the origin of your innovation? Tell the Changemakers and media communities what prompted you to start this initiative.

In 2002, the presence of blue whales close to our territory was confirmed during the summer season specially, which enabled us to foresee a development alternative for a territory that is closely related to the industry. Afterwards we started to realize and observe the stunning biodiversity surrounding us mainly through animal species that generate empathy with visitors and thus attract more tourists. During said development we carried out a census on the main species influencing our territory, existing tourist activities and sustainability of these activities. At that moment, we noticed the threat represented by the industry’s development and growth, which has systematically deteriorated several ecosystems in our island, mainly the ocean due to salmon culture and the forest for energy collection. In this manner, we believe that with this initiative we can allocate a financial value to the natural wealth and be able to compete with the industry in terms of the amount that we may represent. Finally, the felling is aggravated when during the last years a severe crisis started affecting the salmon industry that up to that moment was the main income sources for the inhabitants of the territory, which at present undergoes a strong economic and social depression, thus requiring the development our proposal.

Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers' marketing material.

I was born in the Chile's capital city and when I started my professional education we moved to Chiloe marvelous island, a location that combines my particular and vocational interest. It is a location that has added value to my family, professional and spiritual development. Being a veterinary, I turned to dealing with tourist issues, which I combined with environmental conservation and protection activities by means of my habitual work and through photography that is another huge passion.

Describe some unique tourist experiences that your approach provides. Be specific; give illustrative examples.

Blue whale watching from coastal viewpoints and whale watching from vessel equipped for the purpose. Bird watching of more than 40 bird species in different parts of the territory mainly associated with wetlands and the forest, all this in beautiful path with scarce artificial intervention keeping the pristine Chilean forest corresponding to the Hot SPOT "Chilean winter rainfall-Valdivian forests”. Chilean dolphin watching (Cephalorhyncus eutropia); one of the tiniest Dolphins in the world highly threatened by salmon culture.

What types of partnerships or professional development would be most beneficial in spreading your innovation?

In connection with partnerships, we are developing a joint work with NGOs so that they are able to provide us with supplies to develop our activity in a responsible manner and delimiting it in such manner not to alter the natural cycles of some species. In terms of professional development, the idea is to incorporate specialized professionals such as guides as well as improve ourselves, which will enable us combining the tourist offer with a strong and efficient conservationist and educational activity. Within the frame of what we consider the protection of our business and territory.
