Dancing the Dreams of First Nations Children and Youth!
The vision of this dance project is to engage children and youth from the First Nation community on the Attawapiskat Reserve who are directly affected by educational inequalities in the framework of reconciliation and collaboration. The project includes First Nation and non-First Nation participants and supporters as well as community members and art, dance mentors. Messages of reconciliation would infuse the performance by providing opportunities for non-Aboriginal children to learn First Nations cultures and dance and opportunities for First Nations children and youth to learn other forms of dance as well. By translating Our Dreams Matter Too (http://www.fncfcs.com/shannensdream/our-dreams-matter-too) into dance, the performance provides an opportunity for Shannen’s Dream (http://www.fncfcs.com/shannensdream) to reach thousands of people in Canada and throughout the world who would not otherwise be engaged.

Please tell us about the social impact of your idea or proect
The project has already gained momentum for raising public awareness of the educational inequalities started through Shannen's Dream (http://www.fncfcs.com/shannensdream/learn-more). Our goal is to expand on raising awareness through a project called, "Dancing the Dreams of First Nations Children and Youth." Many people in Canada and around the world have already heard about the disadvantages that people from Attawapiskat First Nation have encountered. After developing the first stage of this project within the community of Attawapiskat, we hope to bring this project to other First Nation communities in Canada in cooperation with other Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal participants. We may impact the lives of thousands of people and change current negative media perception.
Your Future Goal(s): Tell us what you hope to achieve with your idea or project in the next year
Complete the production of a dance performance in Attawapiskat First Nation Reserve and begin the same idea in other communities
In 5 years, what will be different as a result of your idea/project?
In 5 years, we hope that Attawapiskat reserve will continue to implemented this dance project into their educational curriculum as a way of expressing the dreams of the community's children and youth. We envision that the process of the performance and the performance itself will create opportunities for non-First Nation children and youth to learn more about First Nation people and the educational inequalities that happen on-reserve. Further, we anticipate that this project will be implemented in at least four other communities: Enoch First Nation, a Mi'Kmaq community, Kitigan Zibi First Nation, and an urban community in Toronto. We hope to make a different through the spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.
