La necesidad: ¿Cuál es el problema que tratas de solucionar?
Taita-Taveta county is situated in South Eastern part of Kenya and comprises of four constituencies; Mwatate, Taveta, Voi and Wundanyi. It has a youth population of 84, 197 a majority of which are school drop-outs due alcohol and drug abuse, lack of school fees, early pregnancies, and early forced marriages. 50% of the youth are idle and lack basic job skills and some turn to crime and gang groupings as a pass time. Majority of the people are small scale farmers but most households live on less than a dollar a day. Most families live from hand to mouth as parents focus to put food on the table. Thus the youth are thus left to fend for themselves and become vulnerable to agents such as child abuse, drugs and early pregnancies. We hope to reverse this trend of idle youth in the area.

For every challenge there is a solution thus our project is timely and will address problems already identified in Taita-Taveta County. We hope to conduct life skills training in the county thus identify at risk youth and sexually abused school going children. We will then provide counselling to those affected and provide preventive measures to curb the vice through training and creating awareness. The project will first create awareness of its existence in order to enable those already facing the challenges mentioned know that they can get help. The trained youth will form groups or clubs to enable them network and share their experiences and discuss possible unique solutions. Meetings with community elders, teachers, Ministry of Health officials,District Education Officer will be held and pamphlets and media announcement made to sensitise the community of the services available. The project will assist those who want to continue with their education do so in cash or kind.

Our solution will make a difference due to the fact that this community has an over dependence on government aid for many years thus not making meaningful effort to find solutions from amongst themselves. We intend to reverse this trend by working with the youth thus create a new breed of proactive thinkers by encouraging them to be try find solutions to their problems. The youth will be equipped with life skills that will prepare them for independent thinking thus equipping them for both white and blue collar jobs. At risk youth will receive continuous counselling. Youth clubs or groups formed will enable networking and exchange of ideas and experiences as well as identification of leaders and mentors. The youth can then be trained in leadership skills, business management and project management and encouraged to produce proposals for funding. Sound proposals will be funded as micro-finance institutions will be brought in to educate youth on account opening, savings and deposits. We currently work under volunteered premises but hope to rent our own premises soon. We will have a project office in Voi but hope to purchase land in Mwatate and construct our own premises with offices to let. Other income generating activities tl sustain the project include having a membership fee for the clubs and groups, charging a fee for the training and a percentage contribution from staff salaries to the project kitty. Some of the trained youth will be employed by the organisation including the illiterate youth who will also be encouraged to enrol in adult literacy classes.

Some of our peers and competitors include youth organisations such as Yes Youth Can, World Vision, Youth Endowment fund among others. The challenges they pose to our success is the fact that most of them are well established and have been operating for many years in the area and are better financially endowed. What differentiates us from them is the fact that we are strategic in our approach as we want to deal with the core of the problem, that is the individual and his personal development, while they have been dealing with the immediate problem such as providing humanitarian aid or funding the youth projects. Majority concentrate on improving the education standards in the area and do not offer life skills training and counselling neither cater for illiterate youth employability.

It was while visiting a friend in Langata area in 2002; I had to go to a saloon whose owner I had been referred to. The owner was a young mother who lived in the slum (kwa micho) near Onyonka Estate, Langata. While conversing with the owner we suddenly heard a commotion in the nearby iron sheet built structure and women voices condemning harshly against something. My friend went to see what the commotion was all about and returned to inform us that a child had just been raped and that they were rushing her to a nearby clinic for treatment. The owner went on to tell us that this was a common trend in the slum areas as some parents leave their children un-attended to go look for income. Something just welled-up from within me and I wondered what sort of mental attitude the culprit was in to do such a heinous crime against such an innocent child. From that time on, I have always remembered to pray for the protection of sexually abused children around the world.

The goal of our initiative is to empower and nurture young people to enable them attain economic and social well-being. We seek to empower the individual by developing the internal self first because we believe change comes from within first before it can be reflected on the outside. We therefore nurture the youth through personal development and enabling and equipping them seek solutions to problems from within thus trying to eliminate over dependence on government aid for community challenges and build a generation of proactive rather than reactive thinkers. This will bring both economical and social growth and a sense of well-being.

Cuál es tu impacto proyectado para los próximos 5 años?
We hope that over the next five years, we will have made impact on 120,000 youth in Taita-Taveta County. These are the young people that we will have trained in life skills, received counselling, trained in leadership, entrepreaunship, business management and project management. We believe there will be a change in attitude and behaviour of the youth and the community at large and the moral standards in the area will be high. This will instil self- confidence and respect for each other as well as teamwork in finding solutions to problems within the community. The youth will have self-discipline which will be reflected in the economic development of the whole county as they become responsible adults.

We are holding discussions and hope to partner with Kenya Institute of Social Work and Community Development, Malinda and Associates as our audit firm, the counsellor for Bura location- Mr. Mwakio, Ministry of Health, Youth and Social Services Ministries as well as Counselling Associations and Human rights educators to create awareness on the human rights existing in the new constitution. We hope to partner with teachers, parents and members of the community. We will partner with students in a joint effort to build their self-esteem.

Yes, we hope to work in the slum areas of Taita-Taveta county for a period of three years then hope to move on to work in other counties within Kenya such as slums in Makueni, Kilifi, Mombasa, Nairobi and to other counties facing similar problems.

Chari Mwadime -MBA in Strategic Management from University of Nairobi, Deborah Nyambu - International Diploma in Project Management from Cambridge University (on going) and Diploma in Management from Kenya Polytechnic and Private studies, Donald Mwasingo- Higher Diploma in Community Health, Dorothy Mbungu-Degree in Economics, Marketing options, Roselyn Mburu-Bachelor of Education from Kenyatta University. We work as a team, we have good communication skills both internally and externally with our partners, we pride in having good networks with the government officials and business fraternity.

We will invest in premises whose returns will help sustain the project. Financial help is required at this early phase of the project for marketing in the media using posters, pamphlets, radio, television and print media.
