Empathy alone will not change the world. Once an individual enacts empathy, it must be superseded by action. Jolkona U was created to convert empathy into action. We live in an era where we can strategically connect young people to global concerns. We can give empathy a name. We can give empathy a face. We can teach the younger generation that they do not have to wait to change the world - they can change the world today.

The solution? Jolkona U. Jolkona U is an official philanthropy club launching in schools in Washington state (and beyond). Jolkona U is designed to widen the scope of impact of the next generation of philanthropists by encouraging students to not just dream of changing the world someday, but to be empowered to make a difference in the world today. Jolkona U chapters encourage students to champion some of the most pressing global development issues today in education, environmental sustainability, public health, empowerment and arts/culture. Jolkona U clubs are not carbon copies planted from one school to the next, but each Jolkona U club is an individual representation of specific interests and passions of the involved students. One club may focus on global environmental issues, while the next may be more led to be involved in bettering worldwide public health.

When a Jolkona U club is founded, students are encouraged to set tangible goals to effectively address global disparities through three mediums: student development, community engagement and economic impact. Jolkona U clubs have a unified constitution and code of conduct. However, each Jolkona U club will create individualized strategic plans, progress reports, budgets, leadership teams and campaigns and will be educated in volunteer management, social media strategy, event planning, storytelling tips and fundraising. Jolkona U members will take leadership of their own club, but will be overseen and mentored by Jolkona U staff.

Jolkona U members and leaders are likened to champions for global concerns. Champions fight for a cause and work as advocates for those who may not have a voice. A champion commits themselves to improving their community AND being part of the change. This can sometimes seem like a daunting task when a student is working alone, but Jolkona U shows students that they are not alone-that here are people all over the world just like them–who see injustices every day and want to make them right.

Jolkona U's peers include every other academically-recognized club on a university or school campus. Jolkona U's goal is to not compete with these other clubs, but rather to come along side other clubs and even potentially partner with other clubs by collective involvement in community projects and enacting a global impact together. Challenges of Jolkona U will always be the constant turn-over of students as they graduate. Our hope is to mentor young students in grade school and high school, who will continue to live empathy in action throughout college and their career.

¿Cuál ha sido el impacto de la solución hasta la fecha?

The past year has been a year of research, writing and creating Jolkona U's handbook and the founding and implementation process of Jolkona U in order to create a strong, scalable foundation. In 2012, we are piloting Jolkona U in our home state of Washington at the university-level. In 2013, we will be expanding out of state and in 2014, we will birth high school chapters.

Jolkona U is unique in that a) We are a philanthropy club, led by nonprofit professionals, with the goal of educating and mentoring the younger generation to change the world in whatever stage of life they are in and b) Jolkona is a global nonprofit organization who works everyday in the realm of microcharity, global giving, community development and online giving. To date, we have not identified any other peer nonprofit working in the world of microcharity and in the world of academia simultaneously.

1-2 year goals:
-Found 25 university chapters across the United States
-Empower 250 university students as Jolkona club members
-Begin university/high school mentorship program
-Facilitate $25,000 in donations to Jolkona projects

3-5 year goals:
-150 sustainable university chapters across the United States
-Empower 1500 university students through direct mentorship and leadership development
-Facilitate at least $150,000 in donations to projects chosen by chapters
-Identify 60-75 new nonprofits to partner with on Jolkona's platform
-Implement strategy of university students mentoring local high school chapters
-Building a network of alumni who are civically engaged throughout their college/career

-Volunteer power: During the start-up phase of Jolkona U, we are dependant on volunteers to help provide direction and mentorship to our Jolkona U clubs. A lack of committed volunteers could mean a breach in leadership of Jolkona U clubs.
-Turnover of students: Establishing a strong base of students will be an uphill battle at the onset of Jolkona U, as Jolkona is not recognized by many outside the philanthropy community. As we establish our name and presence, it will require great personnel-power to attract and retain student leaders.
-"Competing" with other already-established school clubs: We recognize students have limited extra-curricular time. We hope Jolkona U clubs will incorporate philanthropy into everyday lives of students through partnering with peer clubs and sports teams.

Adnan Mahmud, a Program Manager at Microsoft, co-founded Jolkona with Nadia Eleza Khawaja after a trip to his birth country of Bangladesh. Witnessing the agony of a poor father who was burying his son and could not afford to bury his son in a dignified way, Mahmud realized the lasting power a small gift to this father would have made. Upon returning to the United States, Mahmud set up Jolkona as a way for his family and friends to give to the poor in developing countries. Mahmud was overwhelmed at the response and founded and launched Jolkona.

Jolkona U was a natural progression from Jolkona's mission and vision. With microgifts ranging from $5-$1500 and an active social media and online presence, Jolkona caters to the younger generation. Jolkona's mission, however, is not to just give money to the poor. Jolkona desires to cultivate and grow a new generation of philanthropists-and Jolkona U is the answer.

Jolkona U is a funded program of Jolkona, so it is impossible to divorce Jolkona and Jolkona U partnerships and funders. Jolkona's project partners include over 65 nonprofit organizations including Ashoka Youth Ventures, BRAC, Calcutta Kids and the Grameen Foundation. Our business partnerships include Microsoft, Google, Waggener Edstrom Worldwide and Causality. Our foundation partners include Seattle International Foundation and Social Venture Network. Our earned income clients include the Pacific Science Center and iLEAP.

Our Director of Campus Outreach will oversee each campus chapter with the help of a team of volunteers committed to mentoring the student leaders and helping with the logistics of founding official student clubs. As Jolkona U expands, we will hire coordinators to manage specific student chapters to ensure all have necessary attention.
