Bullying in schools is a world–wide problem from preschool to higher education that inhibits learning and is potentially destructive to the bully, the victim and the bystanders. A bully frequently attains a position of power in peer groups that later manifests itself in society with groups that display severe anti-social, anti-establishment behavior. The victim, often a member of a minority group or a person with differing abilities, suffers severe anxiety, distress and fearfulness that can lead to loss of self esteem, self mutilation and in some cases, death. Empathy frequently has not developed in any of the students.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
The collaborators will disseminate our research-based, proven anti-bullying program through the training of trainers. Our goal is sustainability through educating a cadre of professionals who will train teachers and supervisors of early education programs. Teachers, and all staff members in schools, must be committed to providing active, challenging, effective and joyful learning experiences that promote and develop empathy in all children. Training of trainers programs modeled on those piloted by Dr. Hinitz in the summer 2011 in New Jersey, and by Dr. Shore and Dr. Kumara and her graduate students in Indonesia in 2010 and 2011 can produce the personnel necessary to fulfill the state and national mandates in recent anti-bullying laws and legislation.
The training of trainers module includes lectures, media utilization and “hands-on” experiences in the following areas: anti-bullying laws and mandates; pedagogical strategies; resources, references and materials; and recommended activities. The subject matter studied by teachers, supervisors and paraprofessionals, (as well as the students with whom they work) includes: “same and different,” making rules, my favorite foods, class party, collaborative “junk sculpture,” feelings, and “welcome and unwelcome.” Teasing, bullying, harassment and intimidation are defined and explored. Some of their many manifestations in schools are described and discussed. In these workshops, as opposed to those for pre-service and in-service teachers, participants learn how to replicate the training sessions, as well as the content and the pedagogy. Evaluations from all of the pilot sessions have been uniform in their high praise for the presenters and the content. To date there have been several workshops at The College of New Jersey, one workshop for trainers held in Burlington, NJ, and at least ten throughout Indonesia. The graduate students of Gadjah Mada University conduct coaching sessions for the teachers in their studies prior to the implementation of the research intervention. These sessions follow a pattern similar to that developed by Drs. Hinitz, Shore and Kumara.

Our peers in the United States and around the world are educators and teacher educators who are building anti-harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) programs for young children and their educarers. They include fellow members of the NJ Anti-Bullying Higher Education Experts Panel, and those who teach peace education and conflict resolution from preschool through graduate education. We are an international community who support each other, as evidenced by our dialogue with colleagues from Turkey, Finland, Malaysia, Poland, England and Nepal at the Global Summit on Childhood that took place from 28 to 31 March 2012 in Washington, DC.

The Anti-Bullying Program [TABTP] has been successfully implemented at Howley School with teachers who impact students and their families. There has been a rise in pro-social behaviour, a dramatic decrease in bullying behavior and a concurrent increase of knowledge and awareness of bullying by children, staff, families and community members. Teachers have been empowered to build their own curricula that reduce HIB while developing empathy. Character Education, Conflict Resolution and Developing a Positive Classroom Climate research and practice have been presented in seminars for teachers and supervisors of early education programs (including Head Start). Our undergraduate and graduate students research has been disseminated through national and international workshops, conferences and lectures throughout the US, Indonesia, Sweden and Hong Kong.
• During the next 1 – 3 years the anti-Bullying program will be presented as course work for all Early Childhood Education teachers in training in Indonesia and in New Jersey
• 25 graduate students in Indonesia and 25 undergraduate/graduate students in New Jersey will undertake research in the area of bullying and its effects on the social and emotional development of young children
• A target of 25 anti-Bullying workshops per year will to be held both in Indonesian and U.S. schools
• 3 schools per year in diverse areas of Indonesia and New Jersey will become model schools
• 100 expert teacher-trainers in each country will deliver the training and train new trainers

The incidence of bullying in U.S. schools and society is high with often fatal results. People do not yet recognize the devastating effects that bullying causes. My previous work with undergraduate and graduate students using the Quit It! program led to the development of an anti-bullying program to meet a need identified by early education teachers and supervisors in the Eastern U.S. The recent tragedies in New Jersey and other U.S. states has led to the implementation of strong anti-bullying laws. I, as a representative of the higher education community, am further motivated to reach as many in-service and pre-service education professionals as possible, to assist in stemming the tide HIB in the U.S. and around the world.

TCNJ partners with Gadjah Mada University (GMU), and SekolahkuMySchool in Indonesia, and Howley School in Trenton, NJ. I have been working with Howley School for almost fifteen years, eight years with Sekoluku Myschool, and four years with GMU. Pilot testing at Howley School led to the publication of _The Anti-Bullying and Teasing Program for Preschool_, which was translated into the Indonesian language at Sekoluku Myschool, and adapted there for the Indonesian cultural milieu.
