La necesidad: ¿Cuál es el problema que tratas de solucionar?
We have found that pupils from Romania are not confident in their opinions and suffer from lack of identity as they are deterred from assuming individuality by a decaying society and prejudiced teachers. This reverberates in low cultural interest and lack of civil involvement, self-deprecation, unclear perspective on life and society and fear of asserting values that are dear to them.

A long-term individual discovery and self-recognition programme through debate, critical thinking and civic involvement as tools of self-awareness and involvement. We created debate clubs in two highschools in Iasi for students to meet, learn how to discover their own opinions and values, increase their potential and abilities in assessing and expressing what they believe in and create opportunities for them to put their own projects into practice.
We build confidence by exposing and nurturing their opinions, we teach logic, critical thinking and advance argumentation, create programs and collaborations worldwide on various themes and encourage them to create their own projects, while helping them to put them into practice.

A young boy is shy, confused about his beliefs and generally lacks confidence as he does not fit the model of his peers. He is considered weak and slow-witted. He enters the debate club and hears us speak about truth, reasoning, values and culture. He feebly expresses some ideas, receives positive feedback, develops a sense of confidence. In time, he becomes more certain of what he wants to say, he develops stronger arguments, expresses them sharply, calmly and profoundly. He no longer feels out of place. He joins a leadership camp, a cultural event that we created, he forms bonds with other enthusiastic people and starts building his own project on raising awareness on rights and liberties in his school. He wants to become a lawyer and is now getting better grades in subjects that involved exchange of ideas and analysis of literature. He joins our English in debate course and his communication skills and confidence increase. The next year, he runs for school representative and not only is he convincing, he also has a few ideas on how to make his peers more rediscover value and culture where they were only troubled with fun.
We create a book club and he immediately joins and after a couple of months he confesses he now better understands the profound messages of the books he reads and has developed better taste.
He is still eager to grow,but now he has a clear social and political perspective, he is aware of what education lacks because he has detached himself from the subjective influence of others and can objectively and profoundly judge received information.

There are several other competitive and active debate clubs and societies in the country, but they only focus on students acquiring debating skills, but never teach value, quality argumentation in good faith and cultural advancement. It is true that being able to debate well is attractive to most participants and some rush to join these societies with the hope of being wonderful speakers themselves. In exchange, we focus more on truth than good argument, on scope and value than on strategy, we focus more on the individuals and their intellectual and spiritual growth than on winning competitions. Furthermore, we have combined debating activities with social involvement, cultural events,raising awareness, developing identity and professional choices with support from others with common goals

We have created two highschool debate and leadership clubs which over the last three years brought together 50 participants that were taught values, argumentation and critical thinking and were encouraged to develop identity and ideas for change.
Some of them have evolved into capable leaders of the activities, so that now we have 4 students preparing to become trainers and to take on the activity and some have advanced and implemented personal projects (i.e. photography contest on social themes, an 'Introduction to Law' course for highschool students, public debates on student-interest themes), while some have become student representatives in school bodies and volunteering.
Most participants reported a new sense of awareness and stronger values and those that had issues expressing opinion in certain school subjects now confess they have better grades and more impact in their exposure of opinions, having gained a more profound understanding on current issues and youth life.

We want to expand the project in two more big highschools in Iasi and to extend our range of activities after the initial phase of personal development. We want the project to reach more students and engage them in deeper self-awareness and understanding and forming a solid core of youth individuals to promote and uphold values, common goals and social change. The strong opinions they develop now will turn them into informed and involved citizens in the upcoming years, both professionally and socially.
Thus we want to involve the students in major projects on promoting culture and revitalizing civic engagement in the community through the formation of international ties among youth, local cultural, artistic and social programs so that their ideas and initiatives will be put implemented.

So far we have implemented those stages of the project that involved small amounts of funding and involved more personal and close-range work. Stepping into the stage of outwards expression and change in society, the following activities will require funding beyond what we've had so far.
We are currently applying for funding from international, European and local funding bodies for particular activities we want to involve the students in.

As two of the founding members had been part of a debate club for a long time, they noticed that despite participants acquiring good speaking skills, they were still confused and unaware of basic values and principles and of the quality of reasoning based on truth. We explained this phenomenon by the fact that although the form is taught in debate and the content is learnt in school, students are not able to link notions together to form a value-based system because value and empathy are not noticeable in society anymore.
While the initiators of this project had gathered over time some notion of particular projects they would like to implement, upon realizing the fact that youth are losing the need for an identity and firm grasp of reality, it became obviously necessary to take up the task of re-educating youth in perceiving and reacting to reality on a firm base of principles and goals, that cannot be taught in school but need to be discovered individually.

We have partnership with the two schools we are currently having the project, as well as with a private university in Iasi where we hold conferences and develop some of the activities for college students.
We also collaborate with local NGOs such as Synergy Romania, helping us in leadership and personal development trainings, Junior Chamber International, working with young professionals to contribute to the development of youth, Steps of Hope Association, reaching students in disadvantaged environments.

We are currently working with 4 trainers from the Association directly in charge of managing the project, organizing meetings and content, personal involvement with students and development of stages within the project.
We have also encouraged participants to become group leaders and determine the change themselves, so now we also have 4 other youth participants taking charge of several of the activities.
