In the United States, issues of systemic racism have led to a pronounced disparity between who achieves in an academic setting and who fails, or is pushed out by the system. This break down along racial lines is called the Achievement Gap, and has White and Asian students far out-performing their Black and Hispanic counterparts. In Washington, DC the disparities are even more dire, with a range depending on school from 42%-73% high school graduation rates, and only 8% of Black and Hispanic students who attend college graduate due to lack of preparation.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Our Race & Equity in Education Seminar work seeks to help communities to unearth in real and impactful ways how this plague affects their community, and allows thoughtful teams of adults and students to come up with community-based plans to address and close the gap. The work includes looking closely at a variety of data sources including behavioral, suspension, attendance, academic, and family information. We seek to empower all stake holders to change the circumstances for the students in their communities.

The Race & Equity in Education Seminars, each 1-3 days in length, seek to meet the following objectives:
a. Develop a deeper personal awareness about how who you are (in “The Skin You’re In”) impacts how you teach and lead.
b. Deepen your understanding of the District of Columbia’s history and context around race, racism and racial achievement disparities.
c. Define race, racism, oppression, and white privilege and understand how it is institutionalized at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School, and in Washington, DC.
d. Engage in Discourse II conversations about the impact of racism on the educational experience of historically low-performing students of color.
e. Develop and use a set of tools and actions a Leader for Equity at E.L. Haynes, and in Washington, DC can take to create an intentional equity focus shared by the entire community.
f. Develop a shared language and a shared equity framework among ourselves and the other administrators, educators, students, families and community at E.L. Haynes, and across Washington, DC.
Schools across the nation have tried to address the achievement gap, but have often failed to look at the deep and lasting systemic issues that pervade our work and make it almost impossible to achieve true community, thus allowing the gap to remain a reality. We believe that through our REES work, community members grow to understand themselves and each other better, and they being to look at their work and their data through a new lens, changing from accepting the status quo of allowing an achievement gap to exist and flourish, to high achievement and high expectations for ALL students.

Impacto social
To date, our REES work has been in operation for 2.5 years. We have taken approximately 150 full time staff through Seminar I, and approximately 75 through Seminar II. These conversations about self, bias, and personal impact have dramatically changed how we look at our students as individuals, and how we look at their academic and behavioral data to see trends that we would have been unaware of in years past. We have also begun ‘Our Diverse Community’ a social justice and action program for the entire school community to build common language school-wide.
Provide opportunities for ELH staff & students, & DC stakeholders from other school communities, to experience equity training

I and another staff member attended a Critical Friends Group at Capital City Public Charter School. The 3 day experience transformed my thinking about how we were approaching the achievement gap between Black and Hispanic students and their White and Asian counterparts, making me realize that if we didn’t work as a community to understand how our own biases were perpetuating the gap, that the gap would never close. We had to take action.
Sostenibilidad
Cuéntanos sobre tus alianzas.
To create this work we have partnered with Capital City Public Charter School, Camilla Greene as an equity coach, and other schools around the city so that they may start equity work in their own communities.
We will continue to need to engage staff, parents, students, and partner schools. To sustain work with partner schools we will need to have time and space to codify curriculum with a small team of representative stakeholders.
We will need space and time to write and publish a guide book for doing this work around equity in small communities. We will also need help with publishing and attaining permission to reference texts used, etc.
