La necesidad: ¿Cuál es el problema que tratas de solucionar?

Marizca exists to fight one of the biggest devastating social problems human kind has faced which is starvation and malnutrition. It is estimated that 6 million children die every year due to starvation while more than 1 billion suffer malnutrition. Seafood is one of the most healthy and nourishing food, nevertheless it is a extremely perishable goods which requires expensive storage and transportation in order to be eaten safely.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

Our unique 100% sustainable and eco-friendly process enables local starving communities to produce their own organic fresh seafood in the middle of unfavourable areas, creating a constant supply of quality food, while creating jobs for the community and promoting a green environment.
Based on the same principle, Marizca exists to bring the joy of the fresh tropical taste of never frozen seafood to the heart of the metropolitan cities of Europe, delivering the world of fresh taste of seafood to unprecedented locations.

El Modelo: Muéstranos a través de un ejemplo específico cómo tu solución hace una diferencia, incluye tus actividades primarias

Marizca is a start-up bio-manufacturing company which produces fresh seafood in-house in a 100% sustainable and ecological environment. The company will be based in IP patented technology owned by the inventor and CEO of Marisca, which is designed to make marizca perform as a social enterprise in small rural communities where starvation and malnourishment is a huge problem like in many African communities, or where traditional sea food farms have caused a great environmental damage like in Thailand.
In order to fund the social enterprise, the technology is also designed to enable to produce tropical fresh seafood in competitive prices in unusual places like metropolitan areas, where fresh seafood is highly valued. The EU market for just the imported tropical frozen shrimp species is valued in 30 billion pounds, while in UK it is valued in 5 billion pounds representing 110 000 tons of imported tropical shrimp.

The competitors are the tropical prawn farms from Thailand, India and China who export frozen seafood to UK. We can beat the competitors by selling fresh live or fresh never frozen shrimp to the whole sell markets, restaurants or food processor instead of shrimps that have been frozen and have lost part of their delicious taste. Also by enabling to control the production, we can guarantee a continuous supply of food to our customers, which would not be affected by fluctuation of prices. But our major advantage is the idea of the social impact we want to create by offering the opportunity to our customers to save a child from malnutrition by eating tasty fresh food, because part of our income will be destined to set up social farms in malnourished communities which will be run as non profit

What is the social impact you have had to date and how you measure it?

We have been able to construct the prototype and demonstrate the technology, and show how not only we can produce fresh seafood for rich people (which is what investors love to hear), but also how we can link that part to create something extraordinary which involves erradicating starvation from the face of the world in a sustainable way using social entrepreneurship.

What barriers might hinder the success of your business? How do you plan to overcome them?

Problems in scale up: the technology is set up to be scale out, which means that one single production unit would be produced several times depending on the budget and production necessities. A huge factory of 100 m2 could host 40 independent units; each unit is designed to be movable with a long working life, and with estimating cost of less than 2000-3000 pounds. Therefore we can cater for small comunites or restaurants to also big companies who requires to produce large amounts of food.

How does your model address financial, social, and environmental sustainability?

• The money would be made by selling fresh live or never frozen sea food at premium price in the main metropolitan cities of UK and later on Europe to restaurants, food processors and whole sell markets, while offering the opportunity to the customer to save the life of millions by eating delicious fresh sea food, and also by saving the environment. The social farms would be run as non profit, hiring people from local communities as well as volunteers from our clients in UK, and they would be set up using funding from the revenues of the sea food sold in UK and Europe. A single bio-manufacturing site would have a projected net income (before taxes) in excess of 4.2 million pounds per year.

How do you see social entrepreneurship contributing to the improvement of developing countries?

It will be the key to solve social problems in developing countries.. We cannot keep waiting for the government of big enterprises to do something because they just simply doesn´t care.. But people do, and that´s why social entrepreneurship will give them the choice to have great products and at the same time create a huge positive impact.

What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?

Well we really want to be in touch in Africa to save lifes and implement our technology.. Nowadays we have only been able to do it in Mexico, Thailand and UK which are countries we know very well, but our key place to be is Africa.. So this trip to Uganda would be marvellous for us.
