Kaliyuva Mane - Home for learning

In India, most of the educated people live in a highly connected world and are from developed urban region. The ‘India’, they perceive is very utopian and is quite different from the ‘Real rural India’. Educated parents send their children to quality schools, monitor children’s progress and mentor them.

But in villages, many are illiterates and are from socially backward 'Below Poverty Line' families. Daily 12-18 hours power cut, lack of medical facilities, poor sanitation, inherent disinterest of children in rote learning, poor infrastructure at rural schools have further compounded the problem. So rural children either drop out from the main stream schools or fail to reach the grades. 68.84% of the Indians live in rural areas as per census 2011. According to the Annual Education Status Report released in January 2012, only 48.2% of rural 5th standard children can read 2nd standard mother tongue text book! We are trying to solve this national issue in a humble way.

Our school functions based on the principles : LOVE, CARE and EMPATHY. The nucleus of the school is children. The school is ready to bend any rule so that each child evolves happily. The school is not collecting any type of fees from the parents because they cannot afford. The school is providing accommodation, food, medical attention apart from education (whatever needed for the child’s growth) free of cost for the needy children.

Teachers are facilitators, friends and guides instead of strict task masters. Curriculum is dynamic depending on the grasping ability of the child and its flair. In a nutshell, the school is functioning on the principle, “SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN’ rather than “Children for school”. A lot of experiments are going on in this school. The idea is to transform this school into a replicable model school for the benefit of rural OUT OF SYSTEM children such as school dropouts, children going to school but failing to reach the grades and children from broken families. The school is highly eco-conscious.

La necesidad: ¿Cuál es el problema que tratas de solucionar?

After more than 64 years of political independence, India has remained a developing country. Reasons for this are many such as overpopulation, poverty, unemployment. But the root cause is lack of awareness about importance of education especially in rural areas. According to Annual Education Survey report, only 48.2% of 5th standard children of rural schools can read 2nd standard text books. So more than 51.2% of children do not have proper schools.

Most of the educated people live in a highly connected world and are from developed urban region. The ‘India’, they perceive is very utopian and is quite different from the ‘Real rural India’. Educated parents send their children to quality schools, monitor children’s progress, mentor them.

But in villages, many are illiterates from socially backward BPL families. Daily 12-18 hours power cut, lack of medical facilities, poor sanitation, inherent disinterest of children in rote learning, poor infrastructure at rural schools have compounded the problem. 68.84% of the Indians live in rural areas as per census 2011. We are trying to solve this national issue.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

We have started a school based on LOVE, CARE and EMPATHY. The nucleus of the school is children. The school is ready to bend any rule so that each child evolves happily. The school does not collect any type of fees from the parents because they cannot afford. The school provides accommodation, food, medical attention (whatever needed for the child’s growth) free of cost for needy children.

Teachers are facilitators, friends and guides instead of strict task masters. Curriculum is dynamic depending on the grasping ability of the child. Curriculum is such that, the child after graduating from the school should be in a position to face the world with confidence. In a nutshell the school is functioning on the principle, “SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN’ rather than the prevailing “Children for school” principle in most of the schools.

Our school is a centre of innovation. To mention a few innovations in our school, we have a created a small bank which helps children in understanding benefits and limitations of money, a court settles the quarrels among them. Children need not face any fear instilling exams in our school. Regular assessment is done. Based on this performance, curriculum is fixed for the next month. Children have been divided into dynamic groups instead of rigid standards. To know more about the school, click on the link below:

El Modelo: Muéstranos a través de un ejemplo específico cómo tu solución hace una diferencia, incluye tus actividades primarias

We are running such a school in a village since June 2005 based on our grass root level work in villages since August 1992.

An acquaintance brought 16 year old boy in July 2007 seeking a job for him.
Compulsions of life had made that boy quit the school after 6th standard to work as a child laborer at a tender age of 11. His mother was working as a domestic help and father was not staying with the family. But Kaliyuva Mane encouraged him to study. In 2010, he passed 10th standard public exams in English medium. Now he is doing Industrial Training Course in Electronics course.

In 2007, one woman had come to our school for washing vessels. None of her children were going to schools. Father was working in a mutton shop and had neglected his family responsibilities. 10+ year young Khushi joined our school as a resident scholar. There was no school for her. If she had joined 5th standard in the main stream school, she would have understood nothing. If she had studied in 1st standard, it would have been a humiliation to her. At our school, she completed X standard public examination in 2012 and now pursuing a course in dance.

Kaliyuva Mane is a quasi-residential innovative school for OUT OF SYSTEM children. These include school dropouts, first generation school goers, child labourers, children going to school but not reaching the grades, children unable to adjust to the strict regimen of the school among other cases.

Quite a few people are working in this field of education. But our target group and the approach to the problem definitely differentiate us from them. We need more people to work in this important but neglected field. As such there are no competitors.
