The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Over the past 5 years throughout British Columbia, the popularity of high density strata living has collided with the rapid adoption of web and mobile technology. The result has been an increase in demand from B.C’s 700,000 (approx.) strata residents for technology that creates community, opens communication and provides operational transparency.
B.C’s Property Management companies cannot meet the evolving technology needs of strata residents due to limited technical capabilities.
We’ve discovered that dynamics such as age, computer literacy, language, access to technology and location exist in MiCasa’s target market (B.C. strata residents). We can always do a better job of understanding the effects of these dynamics on our target market.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
MiCasa fills the gap between the technology needs of B.C strata residents and the capabilities of Property Managers.
MiCasa is a web application specifically built for strata residents. We are focused on using technology to:
Build harmonious communities - get to know your neighbours, meet people with similar interests, improve strata security.
Improve communication - engage residents in discussion, access strata documents, paperless archives and instant correspondence.
Provide operational transparency - notify residents, understand what’s happening at the management/council level.
Property Managers can provide a whole new level of service, by providing instant access to strata information, approved tradespeople and FAQ’s.
We address some target market dynamics by providing exceptional customer support (via phone, email or directly through the MiCasa web application) and reducing the learning curve (keeping the user experience simple). We can always do better.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
MiCasa helps create harmonious communities - Use MiCasa to encourage discussion throughout the year so that by the time your Annual General Meeting rolls around, residents will be up-to-speed on strata issues requiring their attention.
Example - Landscaping: Landscaping is an important part of protecting property value in a strata building. Most landscaping project costs should be covered by the strata’s contingency fund; however, some details of a landscaping project may need to be voted on by residents during an Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The Property Manager (or landscaping committee) can upload the landscaping plan to MiCasa’s secure document storage area (instantly notifying residents), then start a landscaping discussion thread on the MiCasa Community Board.
After downloading and reading the landscaping plan, residents can choose to contribute their ideas on the Community Board thread. Some residents may prefer to just read through the comments posted by other residents.
The overall outcome is a more engaged, harmonious community, armed with enough information to make an educated decision at the AGM.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
While MiCasa was one of the first companies to tackle the residential strata technology market, over the past 2 years competition has started to appear.
Here are a few of our competitors:

We set ourselves apart from our competition by choosing to champion B.C. Strata Residents rather than Property Management Companies. By meeting the technology needs of strata residents, we help them create harmonious communities and grow our business. By applying technology to solve real-world problems we help people live better in strata buildings.

Historia de la fundación: Queremos saber acerca del momento en el que hiciste "¡Ajá!". Comparte la historia de dónde y cuándo el/los fundador(es) vio (vieron) el potencial de esta solución para cambiar el mundo.
MiCasa grew from my own needs as a strata resident.
I purchased my first apartment in North Vancouver around 5 years ago. While talking to some fellow residents at my first strata AGM I noted that the overall crowd feeling was confusion. Residents were concerned about casting votes on important issues that they did not fully understand.
After the meeting I approached the president of my strata council (a Property Manager himself) and asked if there was an email list that I could join to keep informed on strata related issues. I was informed that no such email list existed.
Aha!
The next morning at the office (at this time we owned a small web development company) I discussed the idea of creating a simple website for strata residents with my business partner Jonathan Hawkes. As a strata resident himself Jon loved the idea. We immediately set to work creating the first "pilot" application and eventually evolved it into the application that exists today.
Por favor, describe el objetivo de tu iniciativa: un resumen de lo que están tratando de lograr
The goal of MiCasa is to redefine the way residential buildings currently operate in British Columbia. We aim to establish a new norm where owners, renters, council groups and management use technology to work together and develop a real, harmonious community. We are committed to improving the lives of people living in residential strata buildings.
¿Cuál ha sido el impacto de la solución hasta la fecha?
Since launching the basic version MiCasa in Late 2011 we have recorded slower than expected growth. However, we have been working very closely with residents from the strata buildings that have adopted MiCasa and opinion is high.

Cuéntanos sobre tus alianzas.
We have no partnerships with outside companies at this time. We are actively seeking distribution partners at the moment.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
No. At the moment we are focussing our limited resources on refining our business model in our Vancouver market. This gives us the ability to better understand the needs of local strata communities before rolling-out province or country wide.
¿Qué tipo de sistema operativo y factores internos de la organización hacen que tu innovación sea un éxito?
We are a B.C. company, but at the moment our 3 co-founders are located in Vancouver, Sydney and Vienna. We operate autonomously much of the time, so clearly defined rolls, goals and responsibilities are hugely important. We foster a business environment based on trust and mutual respect for each other. We encourage each other to excel in the areas of product and workflow innovation. Our business depends on it.
