For millions of unskilled maids, MII provides training, employment and a benefits package to holistically improve their standard of living. Benefits consist of health and life insurance, savings schemes, annual bonus, paid and sick leave, vocational training and interest-free loans. MII not only employs maids, but also provides legitimacy and respect to their profession.

India has a population of 1.24Bn with 407 million earning less than 28INR/day. 1/3 to 1/2 the population in cities lives in slums. In some cities this results in informal work force, upto 60% in the service segment. 95% of the workfoce earns between 500-4000INR a month, while women earn INR 1000 less than men for the same job. 64% women have no direct toilet access, while only 2% of slums have direct water supply, affecting both productivity and health. 30% women working as maids are widowed and 35% have atleast one chronic disease like TB, cancer, leprosy, asthma. Thus, opportunities is not the only barrier to a better standard of living. Potential solutions should address all their social, psychological, health and living condition issues.

For millions of unskilled maids (house-helps) in India who have no recognition as a labor-force, Maid in India organizes, trains and provides them employment, which enables them to access employment benefits, including comprehensive healthcare, health and life insurance, financial saving schemes, gratuity and pension, and daycare for children. This has helped us provide legitimacy to their vocation, create a healthier, more effective and more prosperous labor force. Most importantly, our program allows them the rights of other labor sectors in India, by giving them access to many government and NGO schemes reserved for conventional laborers. It also induces social consciousness in employers, who pay a small fee per maid per month to enable us to provide these benefits.

Samiksha, a 29 year old teacher earning USD 100/month, working 6 hours a day might not sound like someone interested in being a domestic worker. She joined Maid in India and has grown to be one of our brightest, most hardworking and most liked maid so far. She now earns more than USD 250/month, working 6 hours/day. She has been able to send 2 kids to school this year, and will send the other 2 next year, with upto USD 50 saved each month with MII saving schemes. She said “maid in India earned me the respect in my neighborhood that teaching could not for years. I earn anyone else in my slum and save the most for my kids. I have a LIC policy and a lot of money saved every month. Maid in India is an organization that treats us like employees and not maids and the same reflects in the attitude of our owners. When I fall sick, I now know where to go and seek help immediately, since I'm not charged exorbitantly like before. MII even gives me short-term interest free loans, keeping my good work in mind."

With growing urban needs for domestic help and lower availability of maids, they are becoming a valued commodity. Knowing this, 80% maids find jobs on their own via word of mouth, and negotiate their own salaries. The other competitors are maid agencies that promise higher wages. These are certainly competitors in terms of creating the image of middle men in the service and their vested interests have been a challenge for us. They do not, however, provide maids with training or benefits, or even accountable service to employers, despite exorbitant charges.

In the past years, we have given employment to 150 maids in 500 households. 25% of these maids were previously unemployed. Each maid saw an average rise in monthly income of 150% and now earn at least 220% of minimum wage income. Each maid is able to work at an average of 3 households, resulting from efficient time-management strategies employed by Maid in India. About 20% of maids are widows thus primary earners. In addition to higher income, maids get 2 days paid leave each month, and a benefits packages.
Employers find our rates 10% lower than neighborhood.
They also get maid replacement service on days that their maids are on leave (planned or unplanned).
Now we provide difficult to find skills as trained maids (childcare, elderly care, cooks)
60% maids have opened their first bank account with 50,000 accident cover
100% health screening of maids every quarter.
Due to effective time management maids earn 150% more than before.
40% maids have their first insurance

Provide formal vocational training to 600 maids in Mumbai over 3 years (~20/month).
Expanding to new neighborhoods, to reach service provision to 1000 households in 3 years, to be able to employ over 500 new maids.
Collaborating with other non-profits to provide training to and enroll women in their target areas (victims of abuse, rescued prostitutes etc)
Expand our benefits package to include pension and gratuity for all maids.

Funding is a barrier to expansion of the project. Since we're fully client funded at this point, our net profits are too low to enable swift growth. Infusion with some capital investments can accelerate the growth drastically, and we plan on raising money through social ventures or grants to enable this expansion and increase our pool of beneficiaries.
Our reliance on external partners to provide benefits has worked so far, but is a rate limiting process in how swiftly we can provide these benefits. We'd like to build some of these capabilities in-house.

The founders were impressed by the ingenuinity of MERU cabs, a simple organized taxi service in mumbai, and naukri.com, a convenient portal serving both, job hunters and employers in finding the right fit. Both are an example of resource management, and fulfill core needs of their target audience with a simple business plan. Having mulled over the problem faced by the unorganized labor force in Mumbai, especially women, we thought an idea that is based on these principles of addressing core needs of both beneficiaries and clients, and a simple business plan would be extremely appropriate. Thus began the journey of planning how we would reach both population groups, package the service, and assemble a benefits package that was affordable, and yet addressed all the problems faced by maids in a holistic fashion.
