La necesidad: ¿Cuál es el problema que tratas de solucionar?
Financial Services are currently unavailable for more than 60% of rural India. The mainstream banking sector argues that the administration cost to reach low-income groups is very high and for this reason they do not provide financial services to rural poor. Because of this, people cannot plan their lives, and in agriculture this means they cannot grow regular crops as they cannot buy inputs. There is a wealth of Human Resource in rural India but they cannot start enterprises. Because of all this, our human resources cannot be developed.
The poor need the banking services but they cannot access them. For this reason, Mann Deshi has committed to reach them with door-step banking. Today Mann Deshi reaches 155,000 women with our door-step banking.
La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.
Mann Deshi started a rural women’s bank which provides credit, savings, pension & insurance. In Mann Deshi’s 15 year history of micro-finance, our experience shows that low-income people want to save because it not only help to plan their lives but also helps practice the discipline of managing big loans.
Mann Deshi has learned that saving & loans are not enough for entrepreneurship. Women also need business skills and managerial training which is not available them. For this, Mann Deshi B-School for Rural Women was established to provide business and financial training to women with little or no formal education which enables them become financially independent. Mann Deshi has also developed a network of agents who go door-to-door with handheld device, helping these day laborers, street vendors and farmers to manage their accounts. Through B-school on Wheels, Mann Deshi brings business education to rural women in remote areas.

One of our successful entrepreneurs is Ms.Sujata Mane. She took out a loan of 25,000 INR from the Mann Deshi Bank to buy a noodles machine. Mann Deshi suggested that she enter a Financial Literacy Class and Self Help Group so that she could take full advantage of the available resources and repay her loan more easily. As she was the only person producing noodles in her area, her business started to experience huge growth. Soon, she was able to repay her loan and take out a new one of 35,000 INR to buy a chili powder machine. After repaying that, she took a third loan from the Bank of 70,000 INR to open a grocery store. Together with Mann Deshi, Sujata struggled and finally succeeded in gaining property registration in her own name. Now her monthly profit exceeds 10,000 INR, and as a successful entrepreneur she participated in the Mann Deshi Entrepreneurs Program. She continues to develop her own brand and is now selling her products in Pune and Mumbai. She became a role model for many women & member of Chamber.

¿Cuál ha sido el impacto de la solución hasta la fecha?
Mann Deshi created the first rural women’s bank in 1997 and the first rural business school in 2006. This innovativeness has blossomed into 27,000 female entrepreneurs empowered by our programs. 46,000 women have graduated from our business school and 155,000 women have been served by the bank. Mann Deshi has been able to expand its operations and now runs 6 bank branches and 11 foundation branches. At 5 of its foundation branches it also operates a business school.
Impact assessments have shown that 50% of the women taking courses in the business school are able to get a job or become self-employed later on. Through access to loans and saving accounts from the Mann Deshi Bank, women are able to increase their income by up to 80%.
By improving the economic circumstances of rural women, also their children benefit from better nutrition and access to education.
¿Cuál es tu impacto proyectado para los próximos 1-3 años?
During the next three years, Mann Deshi wants to open 3 new bank and foundation branches. It expects to increase the amount of deposits kept in the bank and loans given out both by around 180%. We expect 120,000 new women to attend courses in its business school. This year, Mann Deshi founded the Chamber of Commerce for Rural Women, the first of its kind in rural India. In the next three years this initiative will facilitate market linkages to women entrepreneurs, provide continuous mentorship and operate an employment exchange program to match supply and demand for labor in rural areas.
¿Qué barreras pueden dificultar el éxito de tu proyecto? ¿Cómo planean superarlas?
Working in rural communities, there is a lack of opportunity, infrastructure, and qualified workers, and the local political environment can be challenging. These issues must be addressed in order to successfully operate. Given these barriers, we believe that the motivation of our employees is its most important asset and their passion and commitment and risk-taking the best tool to overcome any challenge.

Chetna Sinha’s resolve to work towards the empowerment and economic independence of rural women was inspired by her personal life – After joining Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Vahini, Chetna started working in the slums of Mumbai. The people there were very interested in changing their lives; the kids wanted higher education. Her inspiration continues to come from the people. Even in the worst conditions they have dreams, and they want their dreams to come true. After relocating from Mumbai to Mhaswad and living amongst poor farmers, Chetna developed a deeper understanding of their problems and realized that, while they were acutely aware of their predicament and solutions to their problems, there were no banks or training institutions in place to provide the solutions. With this in mind Chetna established India’s first and only bank and business school for poor rural women.
